    I’m a retired ATC working 32 years at busy airports, and worked hundreds of emergencies. This woman is absolutely incredible. Most pilots are great to work with and almost always have a very professional voice, even with bad emergencies. I can tell you that this young lady is a notch above anyone that I ever worked.

      Donald Flesher I remember that flight it was in the late 80s. Several people lost their lives during that tragedy. I’m not understanding what is wrong with wanting to recognize her doing her job well. It is something she does every day sure! Something she trained for most of her career of course. This wasn’t some training exercise that she landed. People in the service industry don’t get enough recognition for when they do their job well. Is me are people making it seem like she just talked on the radio and didn’t pilot the plane? Are all y’all pilots for commercial airliners and didn’t get recognition for a job well done?

      puma.will. pounce an engine failure with injuries is DEFINITELY as serious as it gets, and in emergencies the whole pilot flying/pilot monitoring thing can go out of the window. Considering her experience with military aircraft I wouldn’t be surprised if she took over radio and control while the other pilot managed their route and called company

    • @SketchRC
      @SketchRC 4 роки тому +16

      puma.will. pounce ok 1) don’t be rude, im trying to teach you something lol. And she took her time because there’s a huge adrenaline dump when an emergency happens, so you want to collect yourself and make sure you don’t do something that gets more people killed. It’s easy to make fast, bad decisions, so taking your time is exactly what needs to happen. That said, she diverted to a nearby airport, so she didn’t take all the time in the world either. And military experience is valuable bc she was probably used to being pilot in command while also managing radios, plus military pilots are used to dealing with high-stress situations like that, since that’s typically most of what they do when on deployment.

    • @SketchRC
      @SketchRC 4 роки тому +16

      puma.will. pounce oh, and long finals are typically requested so you make sure you nail the landing on the first try, which is especially important when you’re single engine w damage and the aircraft probably isn’t handling like it’s supposed to. That said, it looks like she took a 10 mile final, which only takes a 737 about 4 minutes, so not a lot of time was added there.

    We had just left Philly for Miami as this flight was landing. While all the passengers on board our flight had no knowledge of the emergency, the pilot of the emergency plane made a calm, cool, professional landing under circumstances that must have been very stressful. You can’t hear any stress in her communication with the airport. She and her crew saved lives by their quick assessment, decisive actions and calm deportment.

    In 1979 I was on a Braniff 747 "flying colors" flight to Germany from Boston. I was just 10 and this was my first flight. We left Boston just as the sun was starting to set, sky was crystal clear. I was in a seat just behind the left wing and was in awe of the view. 45 mins after takeoff the inside engine of the wing I was looking at exploded. I saw large pieces of it fly off and flames poured out of it for just a few seconds. Needless to say I was scared.
    The pilot turned the plane back for Boston without saying anything and 1 hour after the explosion I saw land and the pilot announced we were returning to Boston. It was a hard landing but everyone was safe. We stayed at a hotel that night and left the next night at like 10 PM on the SAME plane that had been repaired... I closed the blind the entire flight to Germany.
    Weird thing is, I would think there would be a report of this, even though it was so many years ago. Yes no one was injured, but it would just be cool to see the report.

It's a great deed within itself to land a craft in such condition let alone to have the knowledge that it's your responsibility for the safety of those on your aircraft. While it may not be the same as putting oneself in harms way as she did while being in the military. One can admire her for landing the craft. While It may not meet everyone's definition of heroism I would call her a hero for her ability to land the craft and admire her for the achievement.
