Third Time Is the First Time! Antique Megamall, Vintage Magnificence

  • As we drive around the country, one big name in antique mall-dom keeps appearing, that of the Brass Armadillo chain of giant vintage malls located on the edges of six major American cities! Today, we add their Omaha location to our travels for the first time, and look forward to comparing it to their similarly huge Kansas City and Denver area malls.
The comparisons are good here! Omaha, Nebraska's Brass Armadillo gives better service and better deals on more interesting vintage on this visit, where Sommerso fruit paperweights, a flower power era girl head vase and a hot red pin from the same era all are welcome small additions to my already overstuffed show-bound van!
There's so much to see in this ultra-large mall, where most dealers are still keeping it real with vintage and antiques, and some that are beyond typical! Specialists in Hagen-Renaker figures, Fisher-Price play sets, Fenton art lines and Jadeite occupy entire showcases, and a really cool 'General store' offers old-school candy brands in a space decorated with tons of antique and vintage tins, kitchen implements, general store displays and a lot of fun and interesting gadgets to boot!
We talk about how to make money using one Franciscan dinnerware pattern as parts for another, appreciate the importance of portable thread cabinets and explain those very curious devices in the box...

Frank L Baum wrote the OZ books. He was just a kid that wanted to run away and join the circus, but his parents turned him into an accountant. His first job was in a sundries store. He was the first person to use display as a way to sell items. He used pots and pans to make the Tin Man in the front window. Dishes became Chinatown. Baum even wrote a book about the uses of display in the retail store.
Baum got married and had kids. They would come to the office, he had become the accountant for the department store by then, where he would tell them stories. The Land of OZ was based on the color wheel, yellow Munchkins, blue Meanies and red, hell I'm old and can't remember.
Emerald City office furniture company made the furniture in his office. The logo was a frond of Emerald Palm. OZ was the files O through Z.
Eventually, he was encouraged to write the books. Hollywood did use some liberties in the making. Dorothy's shoes were silver, but because most of the movie was shot in b and w and only the dreams were in color, the shoes became Ruby Glass.

That is fascinating! I had heard he wanted a showman's life but was hamstrung...but that expressed itself in a pretty cool and different way! I didn't know that he set up window displays that made him think of the characters. The primary colors seemed like a good idea with kids, easy to keep track of who's who. Emerald City!-What an interesting notion. I wonder where they were based. Hollywood took a fair number of liberties, specifically that it was "only a dream" in the movie where the books went on for 40 more titles...I imagine nowadays that would mean 40 sequels, and Liza Minelli would be playing Ozma by now.

Baum's mother in law Matilda Joslyn
Gage, a well known suffragist, encouraged him to write the books. Gage is not as well known as the suffragists Anthony and Stanton because they didn't agree with all her views so they kind of cut her out of the narrative of the history of the movement in their writings.

Turn and burn is where it's at! I hoard eilat jewelry and tend to hold onto precious metals if they were bought well under melt. (taxation-resistant savings account until you cash it out.) Besides, if you hold onto an antique, it might go out of style next week and be worth half of what you paid. (or twice what you paid sometimes, but them's the breaks.)

It would go so great with my late 1800s NYC schoolmaster's lecture podium, my barristers and my two book presses. Jacks with shelves in a garage? In NY they are high style in loft living spaces with glass tops! And with prices to match! No to the farm family cannisters. Scary! But I sure would love the cypress knees lamp! About two weeks after I met my husband, he was sitting at a red light in his van and got slammed from behind. In the back of the van was a book press - a gift for me - which went through the windshield. He went to the hospital - he was okay - and the van was towed. The book press vanished. About a year ago I found one just like it. The second one I have is a bit newer. Would love to hear your bookpress story. I am a fan of Glen Cook - his paperbacks even in bad condition go for a lot. I have them all and my book press came in very handy to bring them back to life a bit. Look for his old paperbacks - the Garrett series ones. They are scarce and highly collectable. @@TheAntiqueNomad

Hey George! Didn't know if I'd make it or not. We've had severe storms, and we've lost electricity twice already. That Mosser Jadeite might not be old, but it is very good glass. I have two of their Northwood molds water sets, and I display them right alongside the Northwood, Imperial, Dugan, etc.. I appreciate Mosser for keeping the old makers' patterns "alive", and they take care their pieces can't be confused with the originals. I really liked those thread cases. Old sewing items, for some reason, really interest me. That green Victorian cordial set is my kind of thing. Fits right in with my interest in beverage sets of all sorts. That Fenton "Heavy Iris" tankard set was pretty, but I'd much prefer an original Dugan set. That's one of three sets I don't have that I'd really like to have. That would be a really nice place to browse and shop! Thanks for the take-along!

    • @TheAntiqueNomad
      @TheAntiqueNomad  10 місяців тому +3

I couldn't keep a signal to chat, just made it through myself! I agree Mosser is good, just kind of heavy for my tastes in more modern production. They do very well with larger pieces in my opinion, and the beverage sets make much more sense in the heavy glass than do the butter dishes and things that look more contemporary. I have utmost respect for them not doing exact reproductions of anything! I would prefer the original Dugan to the Fenton set too, but I liked that Victorian set enough to (almost) pull the trigger. I'm glad you got to come along! Stay safe in the T-storms

Oh yes, I adore old sewing items too!❤. I actually purchased a counter top piece which is full of treadle machine needles in wooden cases, the bobbins for different make treadle machines. They are encase in metal with the sizes and it spins. This is attached to tiger oak square base. Had been painted, but have never gotten around to refinishing the wood part. Has sewing needles too. I have a tiny chain link purse my mom got while in the antique business. Happens to be part of a chatalain a seamtress would have worn on a chain that included other sewing items!❤. Glad to find someone with my obsession!😂😂😂

@@TheAntiqueNomad We aren't supposed to have storms today, but they are supposed to start again tomorrow...through the rest of the week. Losing electricity makes it difficult to keep mom's oxygen going 😖 Yes, Mosser glass is quite heavy. The pitchers I have are super-heavy. I have a "Cherry and Cable" and a "Cherry and Lattice" set, and they are both very substantial, in the amount of glass used to make them. They iridise the bottoms of their Carnival Glass, and the old makers didn't do that, so they do take care that their pieces can't be confused with the originals. The iridescence they use reminds me of those large marbles you find in craft and aquarium shops, but it is brilliantly colourful. That Victorian cordial set, and just the fact it was all still together, was a nice find. I'm not sure I could've resisted that one. That mall had some really interesting items.

@@joycleckley2881 Old sewing items have always fascinated me. With me being an artist, I consider sewing an artform, and so much of it has been taken over by mechanical means. That has taken the art and character out of what people worked and put into the art of sewing. My maternal grandmother and mom did a lot of needle work, and they used to make most of their clothes. I used to have several old sewing items, but when I moved here to take care of mom, after dad died, both of us had to drastically thin out our collections, so I had to sell them. I had a 5,000 sq. ft. house, and this house is half that size, so combining mom's and my collections required some major thinning. There are some things I wish neither of us would've had to sell, but I don't regret moving here to take care of mom, at all, so the "things" definitely took a far back seat to that.

So is that Heinz Mince meat the British version? Sort fruits soaked in alcohol with some suet? Or actual minced meat? Just wondering.
