George you are so intelligent and interesting! I love your videos and your vast knowledge that you share with us has taught me so much! Thank you so much for sharing what you know with us!
Dang it! I was on my way to that same estate sale Friday to look for some vintage art supplies for my daughter but I got sidetracked at Southport Antique Mall (I am a new booth owner there thanks to your inspiration and education). Would have loved to run into you at the sale, I probably would have fainted lol. You are correct, Flipside is awesome, I go to their sales often.

3:05 oh my gawd. I was born in ‘89 and I was so not prepared for childhood flashbacks all bc of *that* step stool. Did I have them at home and at school? Maybe it was in each classroom? Idk, but I definitely remember them even the weight. Sitting and using your legs to release childhood energy and also stubbing your tiny toes with that heavy base😂. At least I did hehe 🤷🏻♀️
@lauracowman6335 we are currently setting a sale in the home of a man who recently passed away. He had the home built in 1987 for $147k, .65 acres with a pool. It goes on the market next week, probably around 850k, and it is all original. We have set at least 4 8' tables with double rows of over 1000 records. There are a good 10,000 aviation magazines, dozens of model car kits, still new in the box, and the list goes on. It should be a $45k sale, if the MCM furniture sells. Oh, and the sound system was purchased 2 years ago for $12,000. The man kept every box for every single piece of electronics, has the certificates of authenticity for dozens of professionally framed prints, paintings, and autographed aviation posters. It's a crazy good sale.
It cracked me up when you said you only needed the shade from that bicentennial lantern lol I’m always on the hunt for either a lantern that will fit a shade or shade that will fit a lantern lol
Yes stealing ashtrays was a thing. My mum always use to have one that she liked from the pub and brought home. Also taking glasses from the pub is something we do here in the uk. Great video.
Love your channel. Learning so very much, thank you. OK, when you was at Traderbaker's Flea Market in Martinsville, Indiana you bought the Whipster Cocktail Mixer. You mentioned that the Patent reflects the late 1940's; how do you know that? What is it about that patent # that hints to 1940's? Thank you
Hi George, I do very well with vintage sewing patterns and have sold them up to $180 Au. Some are more collectable than others but they are a good bread and butter item
PEEK (metal) polish does a great job removing light scratches and scrapes from plastics like melamine and lucite. It's also great for polishing glass, too.
I almost flipped when I saw the display of Pfaltzgraff Yorktown @ 46:51 because it had the original pedestal coffee cups I had as a newlywed in the ‘70s. (On the bottom shelf.) Being married to a military man, we moved often and the cups eventually broke. I could never find cups like that ever again. And could never find replacements online, so I just got rid of the set. I honestly would have driven out there for those cups if I still had the same dish set!😂
Yes George, many PEOPLE do by old patterns and vintage fabrics, notions. I am a major collector. But buy in batches, cheaply. FOLKS def buy even up to 1970 and some 1980'S patterns, and older. Especially larger size patterns......
That makes sense, I have a friend who buys and sells them. I thought there were some in that batch potentially old enough to be of interest for vintage fashion folks now
Flipside is absolutely one of the best Estate Sale companies around Indianapolis. I was really sad I had to miss this onewith that many books, it was my kind of sale.
Yes, stealing ashtrays was a thing back then. I have an ashtray marked "Stolen from Durhams Restaurant, Wytheville, Va," Mr. Durham said he had so many stolen that he had them mase that way; So my Grandmother stole one.
Good evening, George! I sent you an email when the shaker set was delivered...don't know if you saw it or not. It is fantastic, and I'm more than pleased with it! We have one of the old water bottles here chocked full of pennies. I could really use one of those rolling stepstools. I actually have some men's fashion patterns from the 1970s...with bellbottom pants in them. That Sheraton Revival corner shelf would definitely come in handy here. I liked that mod art painting. It reminded me of Jackson Pollock, and I love Pollock's work. I have an oak wash stand that has two top levels. The lower level has the door in that compartment for the chamber pot. It has a towel bar over the larger section, and a two-rung bar section for washcloths over the lower section. I could use those big iron wagon wheels. The tri-fold mirror looked like it had Prince of Wales feathers as the design on the glass. I have my great-grandfather's shoe lasts, stand and cobbler's hammer. Loved the cast iron kettle. I'm really proud of the one I got from you! That small chest of drawers was fantastic! It would've been really tempting for me to buy it. There were tons of interesting items at the estate sale and the antiques mall! Thanks for the take-along!
I'm relieved it finally arrived! I always have prized that set in my collection too. The bottles always sell as penny receptacles, I had to empty one in an estate situation and it was...heavy. Bellbottoms, I wore them but only off the rack! Love corner shelves and Sheraton is always pleasant and straightforward without over ornamenation to mee. The MCM painting did have a Pollock-esque aspect! Wagon wheels attract me but they have to be cheap because they're too large for me to keep long...it's different when you have a nice big place for them! Correct about that feather etch, I regret a bit that I didn't offer her $100, I know that would sell in Florida but also...heavy! The theme for the evening. Thank you for having fun with me this evening!
My sister and I had a pink version of the elephant toy box. I always wondered what happened to it. We used to empty it out and play inside of it. 😅 we loved it so much!
I heard a big dealer in glass tell a customer to put a little oil in a vase to remove the filmy bottom. I trust the guy by his success, so you should try it George.
I just recently purchased 2 large pieces of Holmegaard glass Per Lutken signed one 1960 the other 1961. I paid $15 for both and sold them to someone who truly appreciated them for $50
Hi George ! Thanks for another wonderful adventure . I was wondering if you, have you seen any aluminum vintage Christmas trees this year ? Especially the Pom Pom ones ? How often have you found those ?
I love that you found and spoke about Couroc. I just found a couple of smaller pieces over the weekend and began researching last night. I really like the look of them.
So enjoyed this trip with you after being busy with Holidays approaching. These stores are all over our region and you found a good one. They’re hit and miss in larger towns, but smaller out of the way locations are much better for finds. If I don’t get to watch again before Christmas I hope you and Zino have a Merry one. ❤ oh I used to find good shops down around Somerset haven’t been in years. The lake homes would get all the old stuff and now they’re clearing them out to make way for progress and new owners.
Was stealing ashtrays a thing? Yes indeed. In fact, before we’d leave a restaurant I had to frisk my mother, and this included Room Service items (ie: adorable little teapots). Not only ashtrays, but creamers, salt and peppers, and dishes that held powdered creamers. It was all fair game. It wasn’t just my mom, but most of the little old ladies I knew. Interestingly, this did not happen with the little old men.
Hi George. Great video. I loved that little jacket. So cute. I have a small collection of vintage baby clothes but they are getting harder to find. Val.Australia 🐨
At 46:51, the Westinghouse ashtray is interesting. I'm a safety nerd :) 3 million hours with no lost time is impressive. Lost time is obviously when there's an injury and the person has to be off work.. maybe a broken bone or surgery needed. Then there are work injuries where no time is lost, but some care was needed. Both of these are called recordables and must be reported to OSHA. Non-recordables are those that require only basic first aid like a bandaid. Maybe it was a gift to employees to celebrate a great safety record?
Safety first! I didn't know that difference, interesting. In this case, it was a gift to staff and sales outfits, and even given away to potential customers...it was a way to reuse the parts they cut out of the enamel stove tops to inset the burners, so they came in all the colors that the stoves did!
That orange stool.....i had an avacado green set of 4 stools and a table when i was in jr. High i hot at an estate sale for $5. i still kick myself for selling it when i left for college. I did sell it for $30 but its worth such more now and i would have loved it for my kiddos as they were growing up.
Hint: Soak anything grease crazed in a bucket of water and a cup of oxyclean. .. will not hurt any glazing or porcelain. It can takes weeks, but it works! Remember to soak after visible grease is gone in fresh water, changed daily , do the same amount of clean water soaking. If the item leaches white dust, you need to soak it more. This is a non toxic and great way if cleaning greasy crazing. Promise, it does not harm china or their glaze. If you can wah it, you can use this method.
You & that vender mentioned were talking about buying abandoned storage units. Another thing to look for is locations that do Not allow corrosive chemicals to be stored there, such a Pool Supplies. Alot of those chemicals cause severe rust & staining to your stored goods. Note, most locations Claim to not allow these things. But seldom really watch for them. But the climate controlled ones are better about it.
I wonder how much you need to have to start out and buy storage lockers? I want so badly to be able to sell antiques. I have so many different figureines and I know my duaghter doesn't want to deal with it some day, so I'd love to have some sort of a sale. I'm attached to all of it because of a childhood episode in m life where everyone took my stuff without asking so I don't let it out now and I know it's old. I'm out of room so I don't buy anything unless it's a cat figurine or an old good movie on dvd.
So many people start collecting to replace things that were wrested away from them, at least now we have control! Storage lockers are a weird business to me, I don't know how you can guess without seeing what you should pay for them.
We allow a 5-minute grace period for people to get in to the chat, two minute grace before live sales on The Antique Nomad Live channel. The premieres start 5 pm Pacific time, when a lot of people are just getting off work and need a minute to get on the channel.
