From Diwali 2020, the trains on the Main Line through the Cauvery Delta of Tamil Nadu are expected to be hauled by Electric Locomotives. The CRS Inspection and Trial have been completed for the electrification of Villuppuram - Mayiladuthurai - Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai - Thanjavur - Trichy, and Thanjavur - Tiruvarur - Karaikkal.
The Cholan Express is an express train operated by the Southern Railway zone of the Indian Railways. This train connects Chennai Egmore and Tiruchirappalli via Villupuram, Mayiladuthurai and Thanjavur in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. New LHB coaches has been installed for this train since 16 February 2017. This train is the successor of the very old train in that route known as "Day Express" which connected Madras Egmore and Tiruchchirappalli.
Train is named after the Chola Kingdom which ruled over the regions through which the train passes. The Cholas ruled over their kingdom with headquarters at Thanjavur, Poombuhar.
This train is being operated via main line and hauled by Diesel locomotive class WDG-3A or EMD based WDP4D from Chennai Egmore To Tiruchirappalli Junction . The train was formerly hauled by YAM-1 until the conversion of Metre Gauge into Broad Gauge.As now the electrification and doubling process were going on between Villupuram Junction and Tiruchirappalli Junction, this train runs with RPM/ED WAP-7 from Chennai Egmore to Villupuram Junction and GOC WDP 4D/WDG 4 will pull this train to Tiruchirappalli Junction.

16796 Starts for Trichy everyday at 10:00 AM Ist and reach same day at evening 5:50 PM

I used to travel on this rail route in the 60s when steam locomotives hauled the coaches. Engine changed at vpm and stopped at acharapakkam which was the watering station. Schoolboy memories. Cholan express janathaa express , boat mail, madura parcel, trivandrum fast passenger are some of my childhood wonders. Thanks for this excellent coverage. I am moved to tears to remember those simple, innocent life.
I used to travel with my Mom during 1990's to Kumbakonam in Cholan express .YAM1 & YDM4 engines used to do the honour.Remember those days while watching this video.My mom is no more .
Beautiful and those days in year 1992 this train used to start 7:30 AM from Trichy junction. Most of the people daily commute to Tanjore , Kumbakonam use this train. Students from Pondi Pushpam college, Annamalai University Chidhambaram AVC college Mayavaram enjoyed this journey. Those who wish to witness the rich fertile land in Cauvery delta should travel on this train. Excellent Vlog and great work. Keep posting.

@@kannangk5406 there was one Ajithkumar movie called Jee made out this theme; college boys travelling in this train. Another sensational hit movie with train scenes in this route was T Rajendar’s Oru Thalai Ragam.

This train has had multiple route changes. It came about in the early 80s right after Vaigai Express was introduced and used to run up to Madurai. They used the same rolling stock as Vaigai Express and used to change names with the idea that they have two daytime super fast trains. Unfortunately, both trains were perennially late with mixups and they cut the route to Tiruchy instead of Madurai but still ran on the chord line. I see they have changed it to main line now. Fun times and chaos when it was all MG.
They both also had special livery when they were introduced.
But now it starting time in trichy was 10:10 😂😂😂
This video took me to early 1970 s.
Cholan express used to be hauled by tambaram based YAM1 loco upto villupuram and there after by YP steam locomotive based at Villupuram.
Of course it was a 5 hour journey upto tirupadiripuliyur known as cuddalore then.
Every thing is changed but the policeman's big pot belly.

Nostalgic video 👌 as i used to travel in cholan to Tirupaddripuliyur when i was a teen in 1980 s
See two different mile stone numbering at Ponmalai, 401/7 seen at 1.16..57, 401/9 at 1.17.27 and continues to 402/0 and another series 337/6 at 1.17.48, 337/7 at 1.17.59 and so on. The first series are the distance from Chennai beach to these points via Cudallore main line (This train route) and second series is via Vriddachalam chord line, (the Pallavan and Vaigai Express route). See again while entering Trichy on the traction poles distance at 339/26 at 1.18.29. Distance is 340 km from Chennai Beach to trichy via Chord line.
It took me tomy college days 1990 ... Golden days. It was a prestigious train with diesal engine at that time. Other train like tpt exp used to be steam engine
Excellent coverage. But it's a pity they have electrified the mail line route also. The charm of diesel engines roaring past acres and acres of green fields and small villages will become a thing of the past.
