I witnessed the first Bazzball test - England weren't even involved. It started when NZ were 32/3 on a seaming Christchurch wicket after 20 overs, in McCullum's final test in 2016 - and he said "bugger this, if we're going to lose all 10 wickets today, we might as well get some runs on the board" before smashing 145 off 79. Corey Anderson and BJ Watling jumped on board, both scoring at better than a run a ball. That's the only game in BJ Watling's career that he scored more than 20 runs with a 100+ strike rate. Australia saw it then the same way they see it now. A licence to play at their own pace without having to worry about the state of the match. It gives their bowlers more time to put their feet up and come out fresh, while the opposition bowlers face the prospect of bowling 15 overs each and batting to save an innings on the same day. Bazball has its weaknesses if you can soak up pressure while batting, and trust your bowlers to attack instead of stem runs. They ended up giving us a 7 wicket flogging by lunch on day 5.
@@adeadgirl13 Funny you say that - His world record innings of 222 was the first day of Test cricket I ever attended. The situation there was quite different though - Astle's batting partners were falling frequently, and he only started going crazy once NZ were 8 wickets down and still needed about 250 runs in the 4th innings. So he had a free licence to go crazy. Bazzball is more focused on pushing a high run rate right from the 1st innings.
Its hilarious the vitriol thats poured on "Bazzball", a phrase that wasn't even coined by anyone within the England setup, but coined by journalists, and has ever since been hung like a ten ton medallion around there necks. I have many criticisms about the way England play, but the fact of the matter is that before Stokes took over England won 1 of the last 17 tests, and Englands form since then has been far far better.
Oh yeah definitely haven’t ever heard some arrogant comments coming out England about the way they play. Like “we’re saving test cricket”, “people have been lucky enough to witness this team”, “Coldplay can’t always be on top”. England have definitely improved but they are not as good as they talk themselves up to be
@bencrabtree5647 When did i say they haven't come out with those comments ? My point was about the use of the phrase "Bazball", a term that was completely manufactured by the media, and a term that no one within the England setup has ever used.
@@kil93 We all know for initial success how there were different definitions for Bazball. And with each failing it changed so much that in the end, officials from ECB said : nope we never coined this stupid term. Plus Eng batting the way they do atleast give them some chance. But they have to respect different conditions in away series. Saying "we play like this" is just bonkers. Plus the whining during bazball era, ah the nonstop whining. "All umpire calls went against us", "Scoreline is 1-1 but why does it feel like 2-0". Hence fans cringe and make fun of the said term.
@dashmeetsingh9679 again, none of this addresses my original point. No one in the England set up coined the phrase "Bazzball". It was a media invention that has been used ever since to refer to the way England play under Stokes and Mccullum
@@kil93 Thats what I thought replied to. Its obvious Bazball term was used for marketing till things were going well for ECB. As they started to loose series, they started distancing themselves, so and so that now they disown it completely. When things were going right there was no opposition from ECB officials upon usage of term. Its only after Ashes and series in India there was statement that we never coined that term. Hope this clears it.
Why wouldn't they take it seriously? Bar a spot of rain Australia would have lost the last series 3-2. Even the other two tests were competitive whilst being massively entertaining to watch.

just to once again point out, pretty much everyone in England doesn't like how they're playing. especially when its as reckless as the 3rd test v sri lanka
That is not true. You only have to hear the reaction of the crowds who attend tests to hear the approval. Since Stokes took over as captain, England have lost only one series! That was of course to India. I’m sure you’re aware how good India are at home. It’s entertaining cricket and the results are better than they’ve been for a while.
Buddy, look at it this way. The Bazballers, the supposed saviours of test cricket, couldn't even win the Ashes at home. When the weather 'saved' England at Sydney in 2021-22 (it rained on Day 1), Australia won 4-0 instead of 5-0. In 2023, it went from 3-2 England to 2-2. Considering the reality of the situation, I think it is entirely understandable that Australians snort in derision when discussing Bazball.
Bazball doesnt work because England batsmen dint have the talent to make it work. You need to be a Peterson or ponting or Hayden to make it work. Not every batsman can bat like that and be consistent. The bigger problem for england though is their bowling. They always struggle to get 20 wkts in Australia. Mark wood and archer have played 5 tests in a row without breaking down. And joe root is their best spinner.
Bazball works well for Eng pitches and weather changes dramatically, its good take full advantage of those hours. However as touring side, they need to adapt to their conditions. Saying we play the way we do is just bonkers.
Hey must take it seriously. Last ashes they had sweepers out from ball 1 on both sides. The whole way through the 5 match series ?

Wasn't Nathan Astle the first Kiwi to play this way? I kind of remember him going bonkers in a couple of test matches in NZ.
