I would rather learn that martial arts than Taekwondo, Aikido, Kungfu and Karate. But once a boxer gets slammed into the ground and get mounted on, it's all over. Brazilian Jujitsu, Krav Maga differents kinds of wrestling and Muay Thai are the real deal. These Martial Arts are the styles with multiple weapons that are used properly. They know how to navigate through every situation and position (except for Muay Thai but I would rather learn that than boxing) as possible. I am not doubting that. My question was more or less how long it takes to get a hold of the sport of boxing.
Of course you can spend unlimited time in one sport - i was just interested in the learning curve.
Also some benefits tend to leave slowly - I once trained Judo for 5 years - and after a 10 year lay off - i visited a BJJ school - I noticed that them guys had a really tough time taking me down - while i could take them down still "relatively" easy but sloppy of course.

Point #1: the fight always starts at "boxing range", not a kicking range. So if you want to throw me a kick you have to conquer the right distance, while I am in the right distance. #2: of course nobody of these martial arts train you for a fight with other martial arts. Nevertheless, you get specialized in what covers 80% of fighting time, you get very good reflexes and very good footwork. TKD is amazing as well IMHO, but since fights start at boxing range is problematic for that reason - also, because you got problems at throwing kicks with jeans. Wrestling is another amazing art with other pros and cons as well.

i agree boxing plus wrestling or some type of clinch grappling would be best in the street even if you know how to kick its usually not a good idea for the reasons he stated as well as ur not gonna have time to stretch out and also keeping ur balance and staying on ur feet is very important u throw a kick u can slip lose balance, someone can catch ur kick and bring u down on the cement etc it really depends on ur level and u also want to be able and ready to use a grappling skill to sprawl and avoid being taken and slammed down by a bigger stronger guy and have control from a clinch situation which happens almost all the time i would do boxing and judo cause with judo u use an attackers weight and momentum against them and throw them off of you or down when they realize they dont wanna get snuffed anymore and try to tackle or slam you

Your fancy footwork gets fucked up by leg kicks, especially if they’re set up right. Pure boxers normally don’t train for kicks, and distance control is emphasized a lot in the art (at least where I go). The fight might start at boxing distance but it can move out farther. Boxing is great to learn, but the Muay line reigns supreme for a reason. Do both at the same time and you’ll wreck face.

Boxing doesnt cover weapons like a bat and a knife, but you are right to an extent. There are loads of articles of boxers winning street fights, and in videos you can see that they not only defeat, but completely dominate the attacker so boxing can work in a self defense situaton, no doubt about that. But the number one thing, that trumps all else is situational awareness. Knowing where you are, whats happening around you and geting the fuck outta there the second something fishy starts happening. I speak from experience. Two guys tried to rob me, and I got out without a scratch on my body and with my wallet intact out of a situation that could have ended very badly for me. I ran away, but I feel no shame for it, considering I dont have a gun and Im not Jason Bourne. Anyone who says situational awareness doesnt work has no idea what the fuck he is talking about. Only thing wrong with mine is I didnt use more of it and react sooner.

I don't think it's always a virtue to run from every conflict. Evil thrives when good men do nothing. If all you're interested in is your own skin, comfortability and being safe in life, then you've got the perfect philosophy, the quintessential modern coward. Doing what is right, being principled and helping to defend your innocent fellow man from bullies and thugs when they are in danger, is more important than always running away. Which is why real men want to know how to handle themselves, you empower yourself to be able to act with principle. If everyone is like you, then thugs feel they have a free run of the place, as they are never getting confronted and held accountable, and can victimize anyone they want because all witnesses run in the other direction because they are too cowardly to face any fear.

The range you normally get ( conversation range/18" ) for Self Protection, boxing surely is the main range to train in, any thing else, grappling & kicking range is your support system just in case. After you have used all ways to dissuade/posture and they still want to fight you, hit first, fast and accurate. Boxers are weaned for the knockout. So I Totally agree with you. If you muck up and it goes to ground you have to know what to do, but you can only fight one person at a time whilst down there and their mates will be kicking bits off you. I once replied quite nicely to a Kung Fu post on you tube pointing out in my opinion ( I am allowed to have one) that they should consider incorporating boxing into their drills, well I was told to get my arse over from England and he would show me how he would thrust his hand into my chest cavity etc. Great post really enjoyed it.

In a real life situation, it's always best to avoid conflict. You shouldn't fight someone just because they want to on the street and it doesn't make u a pssy to avoid such a person. There is rarely ever a positive outcome. If you fuck him up, you go to jail (and even if u don't, u need a lot of explaining and evidence to save your azz), and if u lose, than that's obviously bad. I don't know what u meant by 2. You're right for 3 because it is complete bullsht. I don't know much about actual kung fu in a street fight so I can't really say how effective it is. I used to be a guy of "traditional martial arts," but I gave up on bullshit and now I understand the lines of reasoning such as yours. I strongly recommend styles like Muay Thai, Kickboxing and Boxing for personal defense, exactly based on evidence that so out there for anyone who wants to watch. I would just prefer to train Sanda, not because it is "Chinese" or a Kung Fu style, nor because of any nonsense related to traditionalism, but because it is a style that include many dodges like conventional boxing, many variations of kicks and a good repertoire of takedowns (which are allowed in competitions). And I think it's important to have a bigger repertoire of techniques that go beyond punches.
So if a person has the time and disposition for it, it is good to add some grappling style, be it Wrestling, Judo or BJJ. There is also a record of specific situations where submission is the best alternative. It all depends on the situation and maybe boxing does not suit everyone (although I think it would suit most of them).
I personally have already gone through a situation where the BJJ would have been perfect. A crack addict tried to rob me unarmed and alone, inside a bus. My immediate reaction was to punch him in the face several times, but his tooth accidentally cut my hand. My hand bled a lot. If I had already trained BJJ at the time, it would have been perfect, nice and easy.
Of course, if I were a professional boxer, I might avoid this kind of accident, but it was just an example. Anyway, the video is perfect and if I have the opportunity, one day I will still train boxing.

You can use boxing technique in a street fight but you can also use a knife.. Always be mindful of that. Not everyone has the heart to stand up and fight like a man and they would rather kill someone than get punched in the face. Very solid advice though.

You said a couple of incorrect statements in this vid so I'll respond to a couple of them: "Muay thai only has a teep to keep distance" you can just as much jab and cross in Muay Thai just as you could in boxing. Since u leave in Cambodia, you're probably referring to traditional Muay Thai, which has less footwork and boxing and more kicks. The Muay Thai taught in the west has just as much punching as in boxing. There are days were we only do boxing training (footwork, jab, cross, head movement, feints, etc). You can have the best jab, uppercut, cross, etc but if you fight someone who keeps his distance and kicks the crap out of your legs, a lot of the footwork and power in your punches will go away.

I disagree, I say Wrestling is the best. A wrestler can wrestle a boxer whether or not a boxer wants to wrestle, but a boxer can't box a wrestler than wants to wrestle. More important than taking people down is not being taken down, which wrestling will definitely help with. I weighed 140lbs and was decent at wrestling and took down a 250 lb fairly athletic football player. Wrestling and Boxing are the best pair. Kicks are overrated even MMA fighters don't land them often.

I don't think it should have anything to do with the race of the inventor. It's main purpose is for sport, but It is an aspect of fighting.
Important to say that because if people get the wrong idea and think Boxing is a Martial Art that will teach self defense, Those people may learn the hard way and find out Boxing is incomplete. When it gets into a variable Boxing doesn't cover, that persons in trouble. Boxing is ment for the ring.

I'm going to have to disagree with you. Brazilian Jujitsu is the best self defense style. Because you have more control on the ground and by standing up. Boxing is only good by striking their opponents, knowing how to dodge strikes, and have great feet work, but once they're on the ground, they'll become completely defenseless.

I agree but its useless if you're fighting multiple opponents, when your grappling someone in into the ground his mate will try to kick you while you deal with your opponent. Sorry for my english its not my first language.
