Believe it or not, 20 years ago I was equally interested in the NBA, NFL, and MLB. This season I didn’t watch one single MLB game and my first NBA I saw was about 15 games into the season. The NFL I haven’t missed a week. Look, the NBA sucks. Adam Silver mucked the game up. He should be fired.
1. Style of play: 3's and dunks, that's the game. No post game. No face up, triple threat, jab step, pump fake, crossover step, seal your man and blow past him. Every team is suddenly jacking up 40 3's/game. There's no difference styles or strategies 2. Officiating/NBA agenda: before you call BS about the refs, remember Tim Donaghy and the referee/gambling scandal was still an ongoing investigation by the FBI when it was made public. There was proof of a ring of referees who were involved in it with him. David Stern , Donaghy and the Feds all had an understanding that the FBI was going to monitor Donaghy's phone calls to incriminate all referees who were involved. No one was to know Tim had been caught The very next day? David Stern released to the media that a referee had been "caught" gambling and rigging games. 1 guy, to take the fall... Now why would he do that? And if the NBA could do this 17 years ago, do you really think they wouldn't still have some referees under thumbs today? Makes sense why Steph gets fouled the most out of any super star, but still some how shoots the least amount of free throws. It's not an honestly officiated game and the casuals can tell. Why watch if you know it's rigged? 3. Load management: this speaks for itself. My family owned season tickets to our local NBA team for a couple seasons when I was a kid. They weren't a very good team when we first got them, but my dad and I joked that we "were going to the games to see the other teams play" (before they ended up growing on us and becoming our favorite team) Except now, when the other team visits your town, one of their two super stars is most likely sitting. Casuals don't want to watch an Embiidless 6ers or a Kawhiless Clippers. The best players play around 60-65 games a year nowadays. 20 games off? That's 1/4 of your schedule lol

In pursuit of the casual fan, the NBA strategy lost real basketball fans. Everyone has the same basketball camp skill set with Euro step, Dunk, and Three, and there is no defense. Players take time off with fingernail injuries. It's easy for me to see why ratings are down.
Nah its just because the game is... bad. Literally unwatchable. Every game 3, foul, 3, foul, foul, timeout, foul, timeout, 3. The game itself needs to change its incredibly easy.
Another huge reason nobody brings up, once a lifelong fan gets fed up enough to stop watching, and goes a full season not keeping up with things, they realize how inconsequential the sport really is in the world. And then they lose that lifelong fan forever.
The NBA has gone to far into treating a competitive sport as a entertainment brand. More games = more entertainment = more $$$$ and that is wrong. Regular season doesn’t have enough jeopardy, there are too many games with no real meaning other than to just grind out a result. There is also way to much hero worship, it’s a team sport, you should want to go watch teams play not individuals. I would very much like to NOT hear and see so much about the Lakers. It is super annoying, especially when there are many, many better and more interesting teams. A lot of this is driven by casual fans though who just like celebrity culture.
1). Relying on Star power should have never been a thing. The NFL has stars but team vs team is more compelling. Rivalries bad blood. Fans hating each other. You don't need another lebron. You need another lakers vs celtics. Cavs vs warriors 2). Change the play. We have all heard the same points. Fix the 3 point. Bring back various styles of play. Make it harder to score. An easier fix would be. Go by Euro rules. Except for goaltending. Get rid of defensive 3 seconds. Move back the 3 point line. Enough to where its a much harder shot. 3. Fine teams who are shown to rest healthy players. If you are shown to be falsely having injury reports. You loose your 1st round pick. And a big fine. Make it hurt 4). Let the players play. Too many soft foul calls. Let them be a little rougher. Bring back hand checking.
They can defend but incentivized not to. You get called for everything and then you’ll also be put on a clip which can have an effect on your next contract and if you get hurt while playing defense will also affect them. It’s ridiculous but that’s on the league for handicaping defense.
Sit the players down and discuss with the NBAPA that they’re gonna have to take a massive pay cut because ratings suck. Players will have to build their way back up. If the team loses a game, we deduct 75% of your pay from the loss.

He saw the NFL get more offense and he thought that would be good for him too. Also after the “malice at the palace” they wanted a “softer NBA” - they took it WAY too far. Legislated defense out of the game and this coupled with LeBron taking competition out on the player side - Silver taking it out on the league side - and analytics nerd GMs deciding every team should just have a 3 point shootout every night cause they don’t understand the sport or human beings and think they “hacked the game” they hacked the ratings away. These 3 factors together have ruined the NBA. Also Silver seeing ratings down - his answer is gimmicks - play in, NBA Cup, now ALLSTAR game gimmicks, that’s how marketing people see the world - gimmicks to fool people rather than just sell a good product people actually want. They changed the CBA to STOP LeBron from making super teams cause it was so bad for the league. We have to remember access to players is at an all time high. And fans are getting to know them too well. And like with other celebrities they are not exactly likable. Pushing political mandates did it for a lot of fans. Once they started in on calling everyone bigots a lot of fans left. Nobody was in the mood to hear about the current state of race relations by a bunch of out of touch children. And so many other things that have been brought up. Once a fan goes that first year of not keeping up with the season they discover how little these leagues actually matter. Then that fan is gone for life. Because you have to buy all the streaming services to watch. It’s simple. So forget it. Make going to games cheaper. They not going to do it. I’m still a fan. But everyone has a budget. It’s just math.
1. Most "stars" only care about their money. As long as they get their paycheck, it does not matter to them if they actually play or not. 2. Injuries. To think that these players have access to better training conditioning, you'd expect them to be tougher in a league where a simple bump is an instant foul. 3. Load management. Fans pay a lot for tickets only to find out their player is sitting out. Stars miss most of the regular season to "preserve" them for the playoffs. 4. 3 point shooting. Makes the games boring and monotonous.
Fans are not watching because the game has become virtually unwatchable. The "threes and dunks only" strategy that dominates these days does not make for good basketball. Combine that with the rule changes and the pathetic way the refs call games, and you have an obvious recipe for poor ratings. Plus the level of prima Donna behavior by dudes making tens of millions of dollars regardless of whether they play, their effort level, or their ability to win. The talent and skill level of the players may have simply surpassed the game as it has been played. Significant changes are going to be needed to the very parameters of the pro game. Remember, the shot clock was an innovation of the middle 1950's...and college ball didn't adopt a shot clock until Dean Smith's North Carolina teams with their Four Corner Offense would often result in games that ended 22-18. The three second rule came about almost entirely because of Wilt Chamberlain's complete dominance of what we now call the paint. The three point basket was an ABA innovation that the NBA was absurdly reluctant to adopt. Does anyone here remember the ridiculous "three to make two" rule the NBA tried as a counterpoint to the three pointer? It didn't last long. And what was the last significant change to the game since the three pointer, exactly? MLB , Ghost Runners, Pitch Clocks, three batter rule for relief pitchers....NHL, three on three overtimes, bans on excessive goalie padding, penalty time for deliberate puck flipping....NFL, many more rules to protect the quarterback, moving the Extra Point try to the thirty five, the two point conversion, moving the goal posts to the back of the end zone and that's all off the top of my head. Kids now eat better, sleep better, have better physical training than at any other time in human history...the parameters of basketball itself need to be radically redrawn. I don't know what exactly, would need to think about it...but lengthening the courts, raising the baskets, three pointers from much deeper on the floor, eliminating the three second rule (yup , both offensive and defensive). Look , the people running NBA front offices are not stupid people...my guess, they will demo ideas like this in G League starting next season. If it catches on...maybe that will be a start...
Maybe they need to make the court bigger as well if they move the three point back which I believe they have to at this point. Also think bringing back hand checking would help the competitiveness of a regular season game. Refs need to swallow the whistle more and let them play. Too much little fouls called. College basketball is even worse and called much more tight then nba. There’s a foul called every ten seconds and teams are in the bonus after five minutes into the half
Move the three point line back, make dunks worth 3 pts, allow way more physicality especially at the rim, allow trash talking and stare downs and emotion, foster rivalries, expand the league to Seattle and KC (fuck Vegas lol), reduce the amount of games so each games mean more, make pay for athletes dependent on performance and games played, AND MAKE ALL THE GAMES IN ONE OR TWO PLACES/APPS TOPS (most people are struggling and don’t have money for ten fucking streaming services)
I mean when you disincentivize players from playing defense, of course it's gonna look boring. Even role players nowadays like austin reeves learn how to foul bait first instead of learning how to play proper basketball. People want to watch real basketball with real offense and defense, not some overhyped scrimmage. And it doesn't help that the refs are constantly fixing games for their parlays.

Oh then he came back the next night to stat pad against a G-League injury depleted Memphis team.
Adam Silver helped this too - he is from NBA marketing so he comes up with gimmicks rather than actual make the sport better. He saw the NFL get more offense and he thought that would be good for him too. Also after the “malice at the palace” they wanted a “softer NBA” - they took it WAY too far.
Legislated defense out of the game and this coupled with LeBron taking competition out on the player side - Silver taking it out on the league side - and analytics nerd GMs deciding every team should just have a 3 point shootout every night cause they don’t understand the sport or human beings and think they “hacked the game” they hacked the ratings away. We have to remember access to players is at an all time high. And fans are getting to know them too well. And like with other celebrities they are not exactly likable. Pushing political mandates did it for a lot of fans. Once they started in on calling everyone bigots a lot of fans left. Nobody was in the mood to hear about the current state of race relations by a bunch of out of touch children. And so many other things that have been brought up. Once a fan goes that first year of not keeping up with the season they discover how little these leagues actually matter. Then that fan is gone for life. LeBron James run off more fans than any pro athlete in history. Things were already going downhill when David Stern stepped down. His successor destroyed what was left to him.

1. Most "stars" only care about their money. As long as they get their paycheck, it does not matter to them if they actually play or not.
2. Injuries. To think that these players have access to better training conditioning, you'd expect them to be tougher in a league where a simple bump is an instant foul.
3. Load management. Fans pay a lot for tickets only to find out their player is sitting out. Stars miss most of the regular season to "preserve" them for the playoffs.
4. 3 point shooting. Makes the games boring and monotonous.

Fans are not watching because the game has become virtually unwatchable. The "threes and dunks only" strategy that dominates these days does not make for good basketball. Combine that with the rule changes and the pathetic way the refs call games, and you have an obvious recipe for poor ratings. Plus the level of prima Donna behavior by dudes making tens of millions of dollars regardless of whether they play, their effort level, or their ability to win. I think they need to stop guaranteeing contracts, and tie players' income more directly to their contributions and performance

At last a video that doesn't blame politics. I think it may be even more fundamental to the game itself. The talent and skill level of the players may have simply surpassed the game as it has been played. Significant changes are going to be needed to the very parameters of the pro game. Remember, the shot clock was an innovation of the middle 1950's...and college ball didn't adopt a shot clock until Dean Smith's North Carolina teams with their Four Corner Offense would often result in games that ended 22-18. The three second rule came about almost entirely because of Wilt Chamberlain's complete dominance of what we now call the paint. The three point basket was an ABA innovation that the NBA was absurdly reluctant to adopt. Does anyone here remember the ridiculous "three to make two" rule the NBA tried as a counterpoint to the three pointer? It didn't last long. And what was the last significant change to the game since the three pointer, exactly? MLB , Ghost Runners, Pitch Clocks, three batter rule for relief pitchers....NHL, three on three overtimes, bans on excessive goalie padding, penalty time for deliberate puck flipping....NFL, many more rules to protect the quarterback, moving the Extra Point try to the thirty five, the two point conversion, moving the goal posts to the back of the end zone and that's all off the top of my head. Kids now eat better, sleep better, have better physical training than at any other time in human history...the parameters of basketball itself need to be radically redrawn. I don't know what exactly, would need to think about it...but lengthening the courts, raising the baskets, three pointers from much deeper on the floor, eliminating the three second rule (yup , both offensive and defensive). Look , the people running NBA front offices are not stupid people...my guess, they will demo ideas like this in G League starting next season. If it catches on...maybe that will be a start...
Maybe they need to make the court bigger as well if they move the three point back which I believe they have to at this point. Also think bringing back hand checking would help the competitiveness of a regular season game. Refs need to swallow the whistle more and let them play. Too much little fouls called.
College basketball is even worse and called much more tight then nba. There’s a foul called every ten seconds and teams are in the bonus after five minutes into the half
Stop blaming streaming and black outs. The NFL has to deal with all of that as well and their numbers are up.
Move the three point line back, make dunks worth 3 pts, allow way more physicality especially at the rim, allow trash talking and stare downs and emotion, foster rivalries, expand the league to Seattle and KC (fuck Vegas lol), reduce the amount of games so each games mean more, make pay for athletes dependent on performance and games played, AND MAKE ALL THE GAMES IN ONE OR TWO PLACES/APPS TOPS (most people are struggling and don’t have money for ten fucking streaming services)
