Great list Brother - they didn't make any "bad" albums so to me it's whichever you feel ministers to you & that changes over time. Probably my favorite like you a "live album" approach - is this - in 2010 Greg X Volz & the original band did a "Classic Petra Concert - Back to the Rock Live" videoed state of the art with Dolby beautiful sound on DVD. I play the concert on my TV and sounds like a million bucks on my Samsung subwoofer stereo surround system. My 28 year old Son said, "how can any band sound so good & glorify GOD so well" !?! Yes indeed Petra is now 50 years old. I was younger than my son when in 1985 I saw their amazing "Beat The System" tour in San Diego Convention Center - 10,000 screaming fans blessed & rejoicing together !
5. Not of This World 4. Beat the System 3. More Power to Ya 2. This Means War 1. Beyond Belief I like the reasoning behind your rankings though. Petra is intensely personal and important to me. I gave my life to the Lord at a Captured in Time and Space show, and it was during the song “Back to the Street” that I first heard my call to ministry. Thanks for the video and the channel! No Doubt holds a special place for me, because it came out the year I was saved. I caught their show in St. Paul for that tour and I remember John Schlitt having to restart the title track because at first go he got choked up and started crying. I'll never forget that. Great show.
Great selection, and I do love that live album. For me though, the list goes like this: 5. On Fire! 4. This Means War! 3. Unseen Power 2. Beat the System 1. Beyond Belief Now, the list above is more on the Schlitt era side, but I really love Greg's voice. All the albums from Never Say Die to Beat the System are my favorite from the Volz era - with Beat the System at the top followed by More Power to Ya. To be honest, I was sad when Volz left the band. I thought his first solo album was way better than Petra's first with Schlitt (Back to the Streets). I didn't hold out much for Petra at that point. But This Means War! changed my mind when that came out. The trajectory went up from there. It was much better produced and had a more polished sound and I can listen to that album all the way through every time. Unseen Power has probably my top favorites from the Schlitt era with Destiny, Who is on the Lord's Side and Dance but not as balanced an album to me. Loved the songs and the production there. While On Fire! has some great songs as well (All Fired Up), it's just not an album I listen all the way through for whatever reason. Beyond Belief was by far my favorite. Loved the songs, the production and sound at that point in their career. I remember going to that concert at the Palace of Auburn Hills in Detroit. One of the best arena concerts I remember back then. Probably influenced that choice as well. As a side note, I do like Back to the Rock when Volz came back to redo some of their hits from back in the 80s. I like that album because of the heavier sound on the old songs. All depends on my listening mood when I sit down to enjoy some music. More mellow - I go to the Volz stuff. Rock out, more to the Schlitt era. I tend to like to rock out a little more often.
Petra means “rock” and rock they did. They were my first experience into the Christian rock scene. I saw a cassette of ‘More Power To Ya’ in a budget bin and bought it based on the cover alone, after knowing it was a Christian band by the song titles. I had to see what this music sounded like that accompanied that spaceship. It didn’t disappoint! Hooked ever since. God bless and Rock on! 5. Jekyll & Hyde 4. This Means War 3. Beat The System 2. Never Say Die 1. More Power To Ya
5 this means war 4 never say die 3 more power to ya 2 beat the system 1 not of this world Seen them on this tour, will never forget it .thanks ,great list man
I am a complete Petra newbie. I know the name but I never listened to them at all. Based on your top five, I'm starting with More Power To Ya. I prefer studio albums over live albums usually. So far, so good. I love the keyboard and 80s hard rock vibe so far. They kind of remind me of my favorite band Kansas which is a great thing. You have a new subscriber to your channel.
So grateful I found your channel. I appreciate your reviews.
