    Great job on a very practical review! With improvements in sharpness at smaller apertures, it opens things up for landscape pics as well, when you need a little more magnification. Still not sure if I'll go for the 1.4x or 2x, but I'm now confident both will do a solid job. Thanks, Joseph!

    thank you very much for this test series. Ive literally sold all my D850 + F mount lenses and gone with Z7 II + 24-200 lens (also 14-30) and although as a lanscape photographer I think these 2 lenses cover my needs - and you are correct in that as yet no Z mount 400mm yet; so a converter was my next browse. NICE work here .... I think you have demonstrated that its prety good - so its now on my wish list :)
    I occassionaly dip into wild life so a x2 converter will pos be added to my bag.

    It'll be interesting to see if the corners fare as well, but promising results. For more control outside, you could flag the chart and use a strobe. This would make your life easier in post and give a more consistent result. Thanks for going to the trouble and getting this out so soon. Lots of folks interested in this. My 1.4 should be delivered today, and hoping for the 2.0 soon. The 70-200mm S is fantastic and these converters will make it more useful for birding and such.

    Joe - Do you plan on making a responsiveness vs. latency test? Aside from sharpness, I think the other factor that might affect a buying decision is if the TC, at 2.x, negatively impacts focus responsiveness (ie, is it hunting more or is it up to par with the lens' mechanism). Thanks a bundle for sharing your findings.

    Great review. I wish you had compared one more scenario: 200mm at 2x in Lightroom versus 400mm (with teleconverter) at one to one. This would tell us if the teleconverter gave more resolution than using the base lens and then enlarging the image. Sometimes converters can cause more loss in image sharpness than a base lens with magnification in post.

      @Joseph Nuzzo: I guess you still do have the images right? So can you maybe upload the 70-200+TC2.0 at 400mm (so fully zoomed in) and the 70-200mm only at 200mm? Than we could check that ourselves :)

      Definitely should compare the 200mm with TC-2.0X (400mm) vs the 200mm cropped in to match the field of view to show us how good the new x2 teleconverter is compared to its predecesor and if it's really a viable option now.

      "The Z TELECONVERTER TC-2.0x can turn a telephoto lens into a macro-style powerhouse. It maintains the close focusing capability of NIKKOR Z lenses while enlarging the reproduction ratio by 2.0x that of the main lens. When used with NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S, for example, you can zoom in to 400mm from just 3.28 feet away to reveal the tiniest details."

    i have a z6ii and a Z 70-200 F/2.8. Does it make a 140-400 or only 280-400 ?
    doesn't it work on Z20mm, Z35mm, Z50mm, Z85mm, Z24-70 F/2.8 ???
    You mentioned 1 stop so F/2.8 becomes F/4 not F/5.6. correct ?

    • @ShutterSpeak
      @ShutterSpeak  3 роки тому

      If you bought the 2x teleconverter you would have a 140 to 400 at f/5.6. 1 stop of light loss would be the 1.4 tele and both ONLY work with the Z 70-200 f/2.8 lens at this time. It is the physical construction of the lens that creates the constraint.

    If they can make a 2x magnifier, why can’t they make a 0.5x magnifier? Would turn a 70-200 into a 35-100 plus gain a stop of light if I understand it correctly. That would make it so much easier to have 1 go-to lens with a couple of converters

If you don't ever need a 400mm lens, than it isn't right for you. I have been in situations where I suddenly needed it and got shots that other people did not. IMO, the 2.0x really isn't for the Z 70-200 f2.8. Its just the only lens available now that can potentially use it. Its really for the longer reach primes (if they ever come). I can see using a Z 70-200 f2.8 with the 1.4x, but not with the 2.0x. You are better off waiting for the Z 100-400 if you need beyond 280mm. Its not a personal choice. The Z 100-400 will just be better, and you really don't give up that much on the wider end. The Z 100-400 will also probably be fine with the 1.4x, as will the Z 200-600. But with the 2.0x not really. That TC is really just for the long reach primes. Zero reason to buy it right now.

    • @ShutterSpeak
      @ShutterSpeak  3 роки тому

      @@KungPowEnterFist When I was shooting for the press the 2.0 tele was always a great compliment to the 70-200. The same holds true in the mirrorless world. It is light weight, easy to carry, and can double the length of the lens. Additionally, there are no long reach primes at all on the lens roadmap, so I wouldn't wait for that. Just my thoughts.
