For people in your situation, need to find like minded people to become roommates. Pool resources as living on the street is not acceptable. Also, need to build a lot more housing. Get government out of the way of development.

If you lower the cost of housing too much as well, then the competition becomes higher and landlords will only rent to high income individuals bc they r more certain to be able to pay their rent. marginalized and lower income groups still won't be in the clear until more housing is built. @dedgar6161 the average hotel operates at 70% capacity charging a minimum of 1800 a month. The majority of them are owned by Hindus. You Americans are just simply being financially shut down the hotels can charge $20 a night and pay their bills.
Foreign corporations come to the US and buy up our homes and apartments, then they gouge Americans rent because they can, because they are allowed to do this and this is what needs to change. Congress needs to pass laws that no corporations can buy up homes to rent, but that US corporations may build apartments to rent (thereby increasing the housing instead of capturing the housing and gouging Americans rent).

Not Every Homeless Person Is On Drugs, Alcohol & Mental. Some Got Homeless Because They Lost A Job, Got Sick or Injured & Couldn't Afford To Pay Rent & Mortgages. There Are Also A Lot Of Homeless Veterans.
Agreed, it only takes one stroke of bad luck to go from barely getting by (working 2 or more jobs) to losing it all and winding up on the streets because shelters are too full and the resources aren't there

In Utah we pay $1,500 for a studio apt. -Rocky Mt.Power was just approved for a 30% increase for Jan.2025!! - Heat (gas) bills have risen. People pay $2,000 a mo. to survive without insurance! No wonder people self medicate, and are homeless.
All the homeless people around my town are mostly druggies. There are a few crippled people who deserve and need help but the vast majority want to be on the street.

THIS IS MY LOCAL NEWS. 67, disabled, not addicted to anything, currently camping in my sister's spare room with my belongings in storage. After my son and housemate died it was tight but then my building sold and my rent went up far beyond what I could afford even with Section 8 help. There was NOTHING available to rent. Not a single apt unit that fit my Section 8 requirements. (Lots of luxury units immediately available.) I was two yrs too young for senior housing. I've been on the 12-18 month waiting list for 20 months. Sis wanted to get rid of the big house and yard and she was still stuck with me. She wasn't going to put me on the street. Aching to get back to Salem where I belong. And for my own kitchen again.
Yes and since you aren't an addict, your family let's you stay there. If you're in a tent, you're 100% an addict. Normal people who are not on drugs have one of three things to fall back in. Family, friends or a car. Addicts usually have none of those because they stole from/pissed off everyone they know

Too often, families don't have the physical space for relatives-- even on a couch. Btw, the number of people in Canada, Britain, and any of the European nations who became homeless due to medical bills was exactly ZERO. They found out it's cheaper to have govt universal health care than private greedy insurance. Their citizens pay far less than you do for better service for more people. One poor soul I met who was on the street was diabetic. He cannot afford his medications so his foot was going to need to be chopped off sometime soon. (Diabetes impacts feet and hands, causing nerve damage.) Because he doesn't have an address, he cannot get Obamacare or other govt assistance. He can only wait for the inevitable day when he will need to have someone wheel him into the ER so he can get his foot chopped off at your expense. It would be much less expensive if taxpayers had given him an apartment and health care, instead of leaving him chronically ill and eventually disabled on the street. People need housing first so they can get the other help they need (medical, financial programs, job training, etc.).

No one is homeless and no one goes without food or healthcare. As a result, there is a very little crime. They also provide drugs for people who are addicted to heroin And other drugs. I think addiction is devastating but the people who are doing it are walking wounded. They need counseling and need to be treated as a human being instead of a burden to someone like you. Yes, bc as it is, the good homeless ppl are forced to live with dangerous criminals, mentally ill, & addicts, so bad they can't safely live in the housing they're all put in together. Exactly!!! The people in charge of the shelters are taking all the donations too at both shelters I was at and keeping all the decent things for themselves!!! They were even stealing from the participants too. I think they sell some of the housing voucher they get to their friends and family etc too because all of a sudden my file was just lost ok . My info was all entered into the computer I was with a navigator when we entered it. She had quit not telling me just after working there only two months appx. The next one they assign me tells me my application for sec 8 file was lost , how, it's in the computer. I asked her to me do one again then and she said nope it's closed now . I had spent at least a year already living there with their rules etc too.

It's essential for you to have a mentor to keep you accountable. Myself, I'm guided by Evelyn Vera. for years and highly recommend her I focus on him. To be honest, I almost didn't buy the idea of letting someone handle growing my finance, but so glad I did.
And what about the sober homeless? Not all are on drugs… some don’t need treatment, they need AFFORDABLE HOUSING… they don’t need more tickets, red tape, or court dates… really insane.

there is only a housing shortage in heavily populated areas. You can buy an entire house in Freeport or Rockford Illinois for less than $30,000. People just don't want to live there, well I guess they don't want housing that bad.
If cities invested in housing units rather then criminal system as a solution (like Utah was doing) we might solve the crisis! Cities can use eminent domain or other laws to take control of these empty buildings and start building descent housing options for all the WORKING homeless; and the Veteran homeless and the Disabled homeless and the Families who are homeless (often hidden to keep from having their kids stolen from them by govt) n the list goes on! Drug use isn’t the only cause of homeless! Insane greed is the problem and all these “screening” methods used to prevent people from getting housing ( glass ceilings of housing). Criminalize which makes sure they never EVER qualify in the future
I was living in southern Oregon and homeless. I had a job and couldn't afford rent. I had some heart problems and had to file for disability. When my disability was approved I took that money and bought an RV. I lived in southern Oregon for another year and finally figured out that there's no way to survive on disability there. I moved to Oklahoma and in the last 10 months I have bought a piece of property for $5,000. My last payment will be December and in January I will get a no money down no credit check shed/cabin. I'll have to build it out but it will be mine. The payments will be about $250 to $300 a month and I'll have it paid off in 3 years. Get the fuck off the West Coast and you can survive.

Being homeless isn't a crime, but putting up your tent in public areas should be. They can take that mess to the woods and enjoy the long walk back to their respective cities.

Trump's plan is not to criminalize the homeless, rather to provide the appropriate assistance and resources depending on the person's situation. His plan doesn't involve penalizing folks down on their luck due to financial hardship. Those who are mentally ill will get the psych help they need, those on drugs will be offered rehab.
I live in Oregon and see homelessness everywhere. Criminalizing homelessness won’t work. We may have to bring back some kind of institutionalized care for individuals who cannot function within society. People who suffer with mental health issues and then addiction issues should not be out on the streets because it is dangerous for them and everyone else. Leaving people to rot out on the streets is not a good sign for our society. Too many individuals are falling to mental health problems and drugs. I am tired of seeing billions go overseas while our own country falls apart. Spend the money here to fix our social problems!

I live in Eugene OR, I see plenty of homeless and every now and then I feel bad. So one time I decided to take pity on one of them outside the Winco. I told them I would help. I would take them inside and share my food stamps with them since it was the end of the month and I had a little extra. I told him he could get 50$ worth of food. Whatever he wanted. You know what he asked me? "Can I get the 50$ in cash?" I knew why he wanted cash but I decided to give him a chance to prove me wrong. So I gave him a 20. Then returned to my car, I stayed and watched him go into the store with the cash. He came back out with a case of beer, sat back at the same spot, opened one and started to drink it. Not all homeless, but most homeless are homeless because of their own poor choices.
Theres a hell of a lot of money pocketed dealing with the homeless, an industry of care. A thing about making money from misery is those that profit are super reluctant to kill the cash cow.

@@MaharlikaAWAThe homeless person with a phone they can't recharge doesn't always have access to information about these programs. Some are too mentally unwell and need help to become stable first before they can hold down a job.
I know rich people who help the homeless directly. Bring them into their homes and give them jobs. The most common problem is a lot of these people lack respect and have many bad habits even if they don't do drugs or alcohol. Next most common problem is they lack maturity. Seen many people excel at the job they were given and when it's time to get their own apartment they just suck at paying their bills and saving money. Even when they don't have a drug or alcohol problem and rent is only $400 and they make $39k they can never pay their rent.

No amount of money is going to fix this social problem. These are people who think it's a RIGHT to have a home and have society take care of them. There needs to be some HARD lessons taught. We can start by stopping tax-payer money going to people who choose to keep popping out kids.
I'm just saying what I've seen: there are non-profit administrators out there in OR and WA that NEED the homeless people to STAY destitute. IF homelessness is resolved, their paychecks from the non-profit go away. Homelessness grow and so do their paychecks. The percentage of the population that is unemployable due to mental health issues or physical issues is smaller than the non-profits want others to believe. There are great homeless folks out there that will be able to move out of homelessness if they can be provided with decent "work" clothes , grooming supplies, safe place to sleep for a few months and transportation to a job . Then there are those that as a community we will need to commit to care for because they really are not able to work. Many people need to consider sharing apartments/ houses and splitting rent. When I was poor , I lived with 3-4 other people in a 2 bedroom apartment ...again, just sayin' ...
The chief of police in LA that stepped down, Chris somebody, said the exact same thing! The ones at the top of the chain in NOT FOR PROFIT are making too much money for this issue to be solved! And it COULD be so easily solved, improved at least by far. But they’re living well at the top, so they’ll drag it out as long as they can! With all the money they DO GET, I’ve heard not much is going towards the intended people it was given.
There are a lot of homeless who don’t do drugs or alcohol. The rents are impossible and even when you work it’s not enough to cover basic necessities such as rent food electricity gas and transportation to and from work. My husband is 64 and I’m 63. 18 and 16 dollars an hour doesn’t cut it. And when hours get cut due to criminal activity it’s even worse.

Part of the solution to this homeless issue is creating good jobs and fixing our economy. Without decent jobs we can't afford the cost of living. Nowadays jobs suck, unemployment is high and inflation is destroying us.

The government also gives out free smartphones and iPads with service to the poor on a program started by Obama (commonly known as Obama phones). Also, many poor people receive smartphones, iPads, and laptops as Christmas gifts from relatives or concerned neighbors who worry about them.

That’s what I think! I’ve seen plenty of good buildings that could be used, and also used as community centers, with classes, maybe on site medical care. There’s countless ideas that COULD work! I think if some of the govt officials had to live rough with nothing but the clothes on their backs for one week, they’d come up with the perfect solution within 24 hours!
The problem is, the reality: most 'homeless' are in fact drug-addicted vagrants; don't fall prey to the Newspeak. Look at the Plymouth Housing projects in liberal cities, who have tried 'housing first' initiatives: those buildings are filthy, infested, and full of addicts who have zero incentive to get help. I saw this many times - in this town, in Portland, in Eugene, etc. An old apartment building with cheap rent is bought up, renovated, then those apartments go up in rent and their former inhabitants become homeless while most of those fancy apartments stay empty for years. And whoever now owns those apartment buildings would rather file for bankruptcy than lower rents. We have a large building in our town that used to be a movie theater. It closed down decades ago and stayed unoccupied. The ceiling rotted in some places and caved in. I tried to look into what's going on here. Turns out, they owner of the building keeps asking a rent so high, no regular business (think Right Aid, Walmart, a small grocery store, etc.) can afford it. Can government do something with this building and turn it into a community center? Nope. The building doesn't belong to the government. And so, the building is rotting away while people are freezing outside next to it.

Used to try to feed them but they get angry because they aren't hungry, they just want drug money. The key I think is to filter those people from the people that actually need help.

It’s crazy how big and useless homes are now Wasted energy Wasted building materials Instant gratification is the norm. All of it drove up costs across the board I don’t participate in it Our house is a little bigger than I wanted but it’s the size it came. We bought a run down pieced together farm house and renovated it ourselves. We paid as we went and started living in it when only one bedroom and a bathroom were livable. I’d put boxes on the holes in the floor to keep varmints out at night. We did what we had to and now we have a very nice homestead. High rent and high mortgages were not feasible for us. Only the banks win like that. I’m highly allergic to interest payments and taxes. I eliminated all of it possible We will eventually lower it further after we sell this farm and downsize our already low mo cost of living. We have a 4/3 house on a farm We spend about $60 mo on energy just because we pay to be tied to grid incase our solar can’t make enough for us for some reason. Our water is well so no cost for it or sewer. We have producing fruit trees and gardens. We raise our own meats and have chickens free roaming for eggs. Our taxes are $1700 a year and insurance is under $2000 a year. We can’t live cheaper anywhere else right now. We more than cover those expenses as well as animal feed by baking and selling in our honor system storefront at our gate. So, our income taxes come out better as well. We had to carefully plan our future because this world is geared to screw the peasants. I am the opposition
What is crazy that many Americans could easily become homeless. Not everyone that is homeless is on drugs. It’s terrible to assume most are, many are veterans and forgotten about people.

I lost my entire family starting in March of 21... it's been one after another thru June of this year. I work full-time, have no rent, pay 20 dollars a day for a shower and have never felt more free...I don't ask anyone for anything. People like you and your statement remind that there are good folks out there...thank you.
The same people bringing in the drugs are bringing in the people. Close the border and deport these people and the drugs flow will slow, companies will have to compete for workers raising wages and a whole slew of housing will free up making more places available and the competition to get renters and buyers will lower prices. Then you have to find a landlord willing to rent to you who commonly require a first and last months rent, applicant must make 3 times the amount of rent each month, have a good credit score, rental history and references. What keeps you from applying for low-income housing and working hard, two jobs and sometimes three (I have done it) in order to get off the streets. I went from homeless to a house in 8 months. I drove a school bus during the day and I worked at a restaurant in the evening. I worked weekends and it was uncomfortable. I didn't see a lot of friends and I did without things that I would have liked to have but were not necessary. I was homeless due to a committed relationship that didn't work and being uncomfortable for a while in my own skin was better than being in an abusive, manipulative relationship. On top of it all I had a small child to take care of and I worried a lot as to whether or not I was doing right by her. I had daycare costs and a lot of responsibility. I'm grateful that I had a car that I had taken good care of and it got me to where I needed to go. Common sense was my best friend. After 8 months of homelessness, living in a shelter, I was so happy to rent a home, furnish it with what my little daughter and I needed. No extras. And I continued to work my jobs until I had some savings and I was able to leave my restaurant job so I could spend more time with my child. I was tired and still broken, but when I laid in my own bed at night in my own room in my clean, secure rented home, knowing that my daughter was safe, fed, warm, and happy, it was all worth the pain. I survived getting out of a really bad, really difficult situation. The biggest and best result is my daughter grew up to be a purposeful, responsible, hard-working, intelligent, kind, loving adult. Dig deep inside yourself and make a plan. Take advantage of every single resource that is open to you and you will have to go search for them. Be careful who you make friends with because there are people out there who will take advantage of you. Becoming a loner for a while may just be what you need to do, if you aren't already. One of the things I learned from all of it is, when a person is really set on improving themselves, they need to be prepared to be on their own, alone, or with a very few and wisely chosen support system. There may not be a lot of people in your current circle who are trying to improve their situation. Steer clear of those people. So become your own best friend. I wish you the very best. You can do it. Set goals, set a timeline. Tattoo it on your mind, heart, and soul and without fear, go forward.

I live in Oregon. The median rental is listed at $1800. You must bring home a Net monthly income equivalent to 2 1/2 -3 times the monthly rent to even fill out a rental application. That is a Net monthly income of $4500 - $5400 per month. The median wage varies but is listed at $25 at its highest (good luck finding that). A 40 hour work week at $25/hr Nets around $3200/month. That is $1300 short of the minimum income requirement to put a roof over my head. People ARE working, FULL time, and are still living in cars and RVs on the side of the road. It's not drugs or mental health. That is an excuse and a diversion tactic used to divert attention from the fact that the giant corporations and share holder entities we are forced to work for don't want to cut into their profit margins to pay their employees a livable wage. Nor will they reduce the cost of living. They would rather accuse us of being mentally ill druggies, who are lazy and unwilling to work. But we are essential employees and we had to work through the pandemic because people needed toilette paper and food. But we're not worthy of being paid enough to put a roof over our heads??? Well... This is local. For them to think these are all derelicts in those tents they need a wake up call. There are stable, working families living in tents BECAUSE THERE IS NO HOUSING TO RENT. The only units available are luxury units that the average family just cannot do. They don't want gyms and rec rooms and saunas, they want a clean, healthy roof over their heads with running water and a bathroom and kitchen. I left Salem in 2018. When I drive thru now there are tents tucked EVERYWHERE. There but for my sister go I. I'd be dead by now, tho. Compromised lungs don't do well outdoors 24/7. Shelters are very important. They are a stepping stone to permanent housing. How do I know? I am living in a shelter. I am 64 in a wheelchair and homeless. I had a blood clot in my legend. My doctor and a case worker got me in here. I see how a good system can work. This shelter is an example. Many people from other cities and states come through here to look at it because they want to do the same in their communities.
As someone who spent 6 years homeless and addicted, I have to say you're wrong. Housing first doesn't work. You have to address the cause before you can dump an addict or un medicated Schizophrenic into a nice apartment, or it will be ruined.

There is a need for a zoning of some sort of property that will be affordable for low income people that puts a cap on the rents for people to be able to exist with some kind of dignity. Between BNBs and greedy landlords, rents are too high. My landlord has us move after 17 years at less than $400 a month so he could put the house up for renting to housind authority who pay $900 a month. BNBs get over $100 a night.

Dont know of this is the case in Oregon, but here in Colorado you can't qualify to rent an apartment unless your monthly income is 3x the rent. If you cosign a lease, the combined income needs to be at least 5x
I think Oregon is the same. We must have income 3x rent for an individual. Unsure about cosign. Unbroken rental history for 3 years prior. Many persons in my town only get into a rental by keeping their income low enough to get subsidized rental vouchers.

We used to have mental institutions. Drug rehabilitation programs that included temporary housing. Veterans Homes. Old age homes. Trailer parks. The Projects. Low income apartments. Section 8 housing. Low income subdivisions.

Many homeless are addicted to alcohol or drugs yes. But not all are. I have been houseless as a disabled citizen for 7 years. I applied at 3 housing agencies and never got help. I don't drink or do drugs and was cooperative ready for counseling. What I've seen is there migrants getting help while us families,vets, seniors and disabled go ignored. It's a huge problem that eventually effects even good people that end up with PTSD. Trump we need help but the agencies need to be monitored.

@@JessieRubio-p3u Social security is a separate payout from income taxes. The IRS handles income taxes, not social security/Medicare. Those are paid as you work by you and your employer (unless it's a state job then social security may not be paid into, but Medicare still is as they have a separate retirement program IF you do the 20 years required).

Depends on where you live. The issues aren't with the idea of people being without homes. The issues are public intoxication. Peeing and pooping in private yards, parking lots and sidewalks. Thats something I worry about is property taxes. I own my home, they raised the value of my home last year almost doubling my property taxes. First time I've seen a increase like that in the 30 years I've owned my home.. it worries me how many more times will they increase the property taxes to where I can't afford to live in my tiny little home built in 1949. That in itself will put myself and disabled son on the street, and worked my whole life to get here, raised my family here. I know we are short tons of houses and apts to house who is here already, as I have been involved in this issue, the number is pretty BIG , over 10k. Also, many men and women are out there due to income loss and DV, as well. I wonder, if they keep programs like social services and section 8 open, or gut those too? If so, a whole heck of a lot of people will be out there besides those out there already. I am afraid they will just try to place everyone in conditions like the Natzis did, othering all populations until only the rich have a place in society. And they already tild us they'd do that. Not when they cost $20,000 a piece. I was living in southern Oregon and homeless. I had a job and couldn't afford rent. I had some heart problems and had to file for disability. When my disability was approved I took that money and bought an RV. I lived in southern Oregon for another year and finally figured out that there's no way to survive on disability there. I moved to Oklahoma and in the last 6 months I have bought a piece of property for $5,000. My last payment will be December and in January I will get a no money down no credit check shed/cabin. I'll have to build it out but it will be mine. The payments will be about $250 to $300 a month and I'll have it paid off in 3 years. Get the fuck off the West Coast and you can survive.

Foreign corporations come to the US and buy up our homes and apartments, then they gouge Americans rent because they can, because they are allowed to do this and this is what needs to change. Congress needs to pass laws that no corporations can buy up homes to rent, but that US corporations may build apartments to rent (thereby increasing the housing instead of capturing the housing and gouging Americans rent).

All the homeless people around my town are mostly druggies. There are a few crippled people who deserve and need help but the vast majority want to be on the street.

67, disabled, not addicted to anything, currently camping in my sister's spare room with my belongings in storage. After my son and housemate died it was tight but then my building sold and my rent went up far beyond what I could afford even with Section 8 help. There was NOTHING available to rent. Not a single apt unit that fit my Section 8 requirements. (Lots of luxury units immediately available.) I was two yrs too young for senior housing. I've been on the 12-18 month waiting list for 20 months. Sis wanted to get rid of the big house and yard and she was still stuck with me. She wasn't going to put me on the street. Aching to get back to Salem where I belong. And for my own kitchen again.
Yes and since you aren't an addict, your family let's you stay there. If you're in a tent, you're 100% an addict. Normal people who are not on drugs have one of three things to fall back in. Family, friends or a car. Addicts usually have none of those because they stole from/pissed off everyone they know

Most homeless people are there because they had unexpected medical bills or they lost housing during Covid and subsequent rent increases (due to corporate monopoly ownership of the rental industry).
Not everyone has family who can or will take them in. With the rise in the past couple of generations of 1-2 child families, we no longer have siblings to stay with. .
Too often, families don't have the physical space for relatives-- even on a couch. (One of my Girl Scouts shared a bedroom with her little sisters, and her mom slept on the couch, because divorced mom could only afford a one-bedroom apartment on her retail-job salary. Where was she supposed to fit her own Mom?)

Finland solved homelessness. They realized that it is actually less expensive to give people long-term steady housing and health care than it is to force them into emergency shelters and leave them on the street. It is also the more humane and decent thing to do.
Are you a Christian? You CANNOT call ourselves a “Christian” and whine about your tax dollars going to help homeless people. Those ideas are incompatible. Jesus told you: When you have two coats, give one coat to those who have none, and also with your food (Luke 3:11) and to “do unto others as you would have done unto you” (Matthew 7:12). A few dollars of your annual salary could do so much more good for homeless people than it could in your beer mug or coffee cup.
Trump's “solution” is more of the same old criminalizing the poor without addressing the root causes of homelessness and poverty. It didn't fix the problem when it was Victorian workhouses, it hasn't fixed the problem in the decades since, and it doesn't fix the problem here.
The problem is caused by rich billionaires and large corporations being greedy, buying up homes, then conspiring to jack up prices, and blaming their greed on a post-Covid economy. (The DOJ was starting to investigate that crime under Biden, but I doubt Trump will want his rich buddies held accountable for anything, so I don't see the case progressing.)
The problem is also caused by medical bills and our greedy private health insurance system. Just read through the horror stories on social media in response to the shooting, and you can get an idea of why over 325K people a year have to declare bankruptcy- many if these becoming homeless- due to medical bills.
Btw, the number of people in Canada, Britain, and any of the European nations who became homeless due to medical bills was exactly ZERO. They found out it's cheaper to have govt universal health care than private greedy insurance. Their citizens pay far less than you do for better service for more people.
One poor soul I met who was on the street was diabetic. He cannot afford his medications so his foot was going to need to be chopped off sometime soon. (Diabetes impacts feet and hands, causing nerve damage.) Because he doesn't have an address, he cannot get Obamacare or other govt assistance. He can only wait for the inevitable day when he will need to have someone wheel him into the ER so he can get his foot chopped off at your expense. It would be much less expensive if taxpayers had given him an apartment and health care, instead of leaving him chronically ill and eventually disabled on the street.
People need housing first so they can get the other help they need (medical, financial programs, job training, etc.).

Exactly!!! The people in charge of the shelters are taking all the donations too at both shelters I was at and keeping all the decent things for themselves!!! They were even stealing from the participants too. I think they sell some of the housing voucher they get to their friends and family etc too because all of a sudden my file was just lost ok . My info was all entered into the computer I was with a navigator when we entered it. She had quit not telling me just after working there only two months appx. The next one they assign me tells me my application for sec 8 file was lost , how, it's in the computer. I asked her to me do one again then and she said nope it's closed now . I had spent at least a year already living there with their rules etc too.

there is only a housing shortage in heavily populated areas. You can buy an entire house in Freeport or Rockford Illinois for less than $30,000. People just don't want to live there, well I guess they don't want housing that bad.
If cities invested in housing units rather then criminal system as a solution (like Utah was doing) we might solve the crisis! Cities can use eminent domain or other laws to take control of these empty buildings and start building descent housing options for all the WORKING homeless; and the Veteran homeless and the Disabled homeless and the Families who are homeless (often hidden to keep from having their kids stolen from them by govt) n the list goes on! Drug use isn’t the only cause of homeless! Insane greed is the problem and all these “screening” methods used to prevent people from getting housing ( glass ceilings of housing). I was living in southern Oregon and homeless. I had a job and couldn't afford rent. I had some heart problems and had to file for disability. When my disability was approved I took that money and bought an RV. I lived in southern Oregon for another year and finally figured out that there's no way to survive on disability there. I moved to Oklahoma and in the last 10 months I have bought a piece of property for $5,000. My last payment will be December and in January I will get a no money down no credit check shed/cabin. I'll have to build it out but it will be mine. The payments will be about $250 to $300 a month and I'll have it paid off in 3 years. Get the fuck off the West Coast and you can survive.

Trump's plan is not to criminalize the homeless, rather to provide the appropriate assistance and resources depending on the person's situation. His plan doesn't involve penalizing folks down on their luck due to financial hardship. Those who are mentally ill will get the psych help they need, those on drugs will be offered rehab.

Criminalizing homelessness won’t work. We may have to bring back some kind of institutionalized care for individuals who cannot function within society. People who suffer with mental health issues and then addiction issues should not be out on the streets because it is dangerous for them and everyone else. Leaving people to rot out on the streets is not a good sign for our society. Too many individuals are falling to mental health problems and drugs. I am tired of seeing billions go overseas while our own country falls apart. Spend the money here to fix our social problems!

I live in Eugene OR, I see plenty of homeless and every now and then I feel bad. So one time I decided to take pity on one of them outside the Winco. I told them I would help. I would take them inside and share my food stamps with them since it was the end of the month and I had a little extra. I told him he could get 50$ worth of food. Whatever he wanted.
You know what he asked me?
"Can I get the 50$ in cash?"
I knew why he wanted cash but I decided to give him a chance to prove me wrong. So I gave him a 20. Then returned to my car, I stayed and watched him go into the store with the cash. He came back out with a case of beer, sat back at the same spot, opened one and started to drink it.

I know rich people who help the homeless directly. Bring them into their homes and give them jobs. The most common problem is a lot of these people lack respect and have many bad habits even if they don't do drugs or alcohol. Next most common problem is they lack maturity. Seen many people excel at the job they were given and when it's time to get their own apartment they just suck at paying their bills and saving money. Even when they don't have a drug or alcohol problem and rent is only $400 and they make $39k they can never pay their rent.

I'm just saying what I've seen: there are non-profit administrators out there in OR and WA that NEED the homeless people to STAY destitute. IF homelessness is resolved, their paychecks from the non-profit go away. Homelessness grow and so do their paychecks. The percentage of the population that is unemployable due to mental health issues or physical issues is smaller than the non-profits want others to believe. There are great homeless folks out there that will be able to move out of homelessness if they can be provided with decent "work" clothes , grooming supplies, safe place to sleep for a few months and transportation to a job . Then there are those that as a community we will need to commit to care for because they really are not able to work. Many people need to consider sharing apartments/ houses and splitting rent. When I was poor , I lived with 3-4 other people in a 2 bedroom apartment ...again, just sayin' ...

There are a lot of homeless who don’t do drugs or alcohol. The rents are impossible and even when you work it’s not enough to cover basic necessities such as rent food electricity gas and transportation to and from work. My husband is 64 and I’m 63. 18 and 16 dollars an hour doesn’t cut it. And when hours get cut due to criminal activity it’s even worse.

The government also gives out free smartphones and iPads with service to the poor on a program started by Obama (commonly known as Obama phones). That’s what I think! I’ve seen plenty of good buildings that could be used, and also used as community centers, with classes, maybe on site medical care.

Look at the Plymouth Housing projects in liberal cities, who have tried 'housing first' initiatives: those buildings are filthy, infested, and full of addicts who have zero incentive to get help. I live in a small town in Oregon. We have many homeless here, most used to be non-homeless. I saw this many times - in this town, in Portland, in Eugene, etc. An old apartment building with cheap rent is bought up, renovated, then those apartments go up in rent and their former inhabitants become homeless while most of those fancy apartments stay empty for years. And whoever now owns those apartment buildings would rather file for bankruptcy than lower rents.
We have a large building in our town that used to be a movie theater. It closed down decades ago and stayed unoccupied. The ceiling rotted in some places and caved in. I tried to look into what's going on here. Turns out, they owner of the building keeps asking a rent so high, no regular business (think Right Aid, Walmart, a small grocery store, etc.) can afford it.
Can government do something with this building and turn it into a community center? Nope. The building doesn't belong to the government. And so, the building is rotting away while people are freezing outside next to it.

Used to try to feed them but they get angry because they aren't hungry, they just want drug money. The key I think is to filter those people from the people that actually need help.

I don’t participate in it Our house is a little bigger than I wanted but it’s the size it came. We bought a run down pieced together farm house and renovated it ourselves. We paid as we went and started living in it when only one bedroom and a bathroom were livable. I’d put boxes on the holes in the floor to keep varmints out at night. We did what we had to and now we have a very nice homestead. High rent and high mortgages were not feasible for us. Only the banks win like that. I’m highly allergic to interest payments and taxes. I eliminated all of it possible We will eventually lower it further after we sell this farm and downsize our already low mo cost of living. We have a 4/3 house on a farm We spend about $60 mo on energy just because we pay to be tied to grid incase our solar can’t make enough for us for some reason. Our water is well so no cost for it or sewer. We have producing fruit trees and gardens. We raise our own meats and have chickens free roaming for eggs. Our taxes are $1700 a year and insurance is under $2000 a year. We can’t live cheaper anywhere else right now. We more than cover those expenses as well as animal feed by baking and selling in our honor system storefront at our gate. So, our income taxes come out better as well.

I lost my entire family starting in March of 21... it's been one after another thru June of this year. I work full-time, have no rent, pay 20 dollars a day for a shower and have never felt more free...I don't ask anyone for anything. Then you have to find a landlord willing to rent to you who commonly require a first and last months rent, applicant must make 3 times the amount of rent each month, have a good credit score, rental history and references. What keeps you from applying for low-income housing and working hard, two jobs and sometimes three (I have done it) in order to get off the streets. I went from homeless to a house in 8 months. I drove a school bus during the day and I worked at a restaurant in the evening. I worked weekends and it was uncomfortable. I didn't see a lot of friends and I did without things that I would have liked to have but were not necessary. I was homeless due to a committed relationship that didn't work and being uncomfortable for a while in my own skin was better than being in an abusive, manipulative relationship. On top of it all I had a small child to take care of and I worried a lot as to whether or not I was doing right by her. I had daycare costs and a lot of responsibility. I'm grateful that I had a car that I had taken good care of and it got me to where I needed to go. Common sense was my best friend. After 8 months of homelessness, living in a shelter, I was so happy to rent a home, furnish it with what my little daughter and I needed. No extras. And I continued to work my jobs until I had some savings and I was able to leave my restaurant job so I could spend more time with my child. I was tired and still broken, but when I laid in my own bed at night in my own room in my clean, secure rented home, knowing that my daughter was safe, fed, warm, and happy, it was all worth the pain. I survived getting out of a really bad, really difficult situation. The biggest and best result is my daughter grew up to be a purposeful, responsible, hard-working, intelligent, kind, loving adult. Dig deep inside yourself and make a plan. Take advantage of every single resource that is open to you and you will have to go search for them. Be careful who you make friends with because there are people out there who will take advantage of you. Becoming a loner for a while may just be what you need to do, if you aren't already. One of the things I learned from all of it is, when a person is really set on improving themselves, they need to be prepared to be on their own, alone, or with a very few and wisely chosen support system. There may not be a lot of people in your current circle who are trying to improve their situation. Steer clear of those people. So become your own best friend. I wish you the very best. You can do it. Set goals, set a timeline. Tattoo it on your mind, heart, and soul and without fear, go forward.

I live in Oregon. The median rental is listed at $1800. You must bring home a Net monthly income equivalent to 2 1/2 -3 times the monthly rent to even fill out a rental application. That is a Net monthly income of $4500 - $5400 per month. The median wage varies but is listed at $25 at its highest (good luck finding that). A 40 hour work week at $25/hr Nets around $3200/month. That is $1300 short of the minimum income requirement to put a roof over my head. People ARE working, FULL time, and are still living in cars and RVs on the side of the road. It's not drugs or mental health. That is an excuse and a diversion tactic used to divert attention from the fact that the giant corporations and share holder entities we are forced to work for don't want to cut into their profit margins to pay their employees a livable wage. Nor will they reduce the cost of living. They would rather accuse us of being mentally ill druggies, who are lazy and unwilling to work. But we are essential employees and we had to work through the pandemic because people needed toilette paper and food. But we're not worthy of being paid enough to put a roof over our heads??? Well... The only units available are luxury units that the average family just cannot do. When I drive thru now there are tents tucked EVERYWHERE. There but for my sister go I. I'd be dead by now, tho. Compromised lungs don't do well outdoors 24/7. Dont know of this is the case in Oregon, but here in Colorado you can't qualify to rent an apartment unless your monthly income is 3x the rent. If you cosign a lease, the combined income needs to be at least 5x

We used to have mental institutions. Drug rehabilitation programs that included temporary housing. Veterans Homes. Old age homes. Trailer parks. The Projects. Low income apartments. Section 8 housing. Low income subdivisions.
Don't forget housing the homeless in jail costs tax payers on average in America $39,197 a year per person.... Just incarcerating the homeless veterans alone would cost an additional 28 billion tax dollars annually.. and they only make up 13% of the homeless.

Many homeless are addicted to alcohol or drugs yes. But not all are. I have been houseless as a disabled citizen for 7 years. I applied at 3 housing agencies and never got help. I don't drink or do drugs and was cooperative ready for counseling. What I've seen is there migrants getting help while us families,vets, seniors and disabled go ignored. It's a huge problem that eventually effects even good people that end up with PTSD. Trump we need help but the agencies need to be monitored.

@@got2kittys Rest Stop, the only place that still has an open bathroom. That's where everyone has to fight for a parking spot to sleep in their cars in Southern Oregon. You are limited to 12 hours to avoid towing. No sleeping on tables or grass, they water heavy at sunset.

Drugs & poor judgment are only part of what is going on here,it's economics, wages too low,rents too high and individual is judged,if that person doesn't have enough funds to bridge the gap,& are caught up in the big net of failed economic policies, mental health policies & too much greed & indifference

Hopefully unless Donald Trump doesn't make things worse for us by terminate Uncle Sam's IRS department that will definitely affect social security retirement funds and Medi-Cal insurance. @@JessieRubio-p3u Social security is a separate payout from income taxes. The IRS handles income taxes, not social security/Medicare. Those are paid as you work by you and your employer (unless it's a state job then social security may not be paid into, but Medicare still is as they have a separate retirement program IF you do the 20 years required).
Corporate Greed is causing a lot of problems in our society. We need public officials in all branches and on all levels who will stand up against corporate greed and price gouging.

Real estate companies are working together to artificially raise rent prices. There definitely needs to be more gov't regulation against these greedy practices that are contributing to the homelessness crisis.

This is what they did in California in Sacramento California, it was the safe place for women and men when we had a camp that was controlled by good leaders people in the houses watching all the people in the camp but the way Mr Trump is talking about I think it great idea let's do that real soon outside of the city of course the people would have transportation for the homeless everybody that is homeless is not on drugs because there are some people that have been forced out of their home by violent and threats own their life and and there's some people that don't want to live in a building

Depends on where you live. The issues aren't with the idea of people being without homes. The issues are public intoxication. Peeing and pooping in private yards, parking lots and sidewalks. It's doing hard substances in broad daylight without a care in the world! I cannot go grocery shopping without seeing people actively sho0ting up. Kids everywhere! THAT is the crime part!

Lower the cost of rent, get rid of the county theft of property for unpaid property taxes, and for that matter get rid of property taxes! Treatment is one thing, helping people prevent homelessness from the start is where we need to start imo
Thats something I worry about is property taxes. I own my home, they raised the value of my home last year almost doubling my property taxes. First time I've seen a increase like that in the 30 years I've owned my home.. it worries me how many more times will they increase the property taxes to where I can't afford to live in my tiny little home built in 1949. I specifically remember comments he and other gop leaders like Rick Scott and Musk have made, even recently, that there would be cuts to Social security and Medicare, Food stamps too. That in itself will put myself and disabled son on the street, and worked my whole life to get here, raised my family here. I know we are short tons of houses and apts to house who is here already, as I have been involved in this issue, the number is pretty BIG , over 10k. Also, many men and women are out there due to income loss and DV, as well. I wonder, if they keep programs like social services and section 8 open, or gut those too? If so, a whole heck of a lot of people will be out there besides those out there already. I am afraid they will just try to place everyone in conditions like the Natzis did, othering all populations until only the rich have a place in society. And they already tild us they'd do that. Very sad.

The tiny houses are a massive waste of resources and land... you could build one nice house or three crappy ones with double the resources on the same plot... It's a terrible idea.
Not when they cost $20,000 a piece. I was living in southern Oregon and homeless. I had a job and couldn't afford rent. I had some heart problems and had to file for disability. When my disability was approved I took that money and bought an RV. I lived in southern Oregon for another year and finally figured out that there's no way to survive on disability there. I moved to Oklahoma and in the last 6 months I have bought a piece of property for $5,000. My last payment will be December and in January I will get a no money down no credit check shed/cabin. I'll have to build it out but it will be mine. The payments will be about $250 to $300 a month and I'll have it paid off in 3 years. Get the fuck off the West Coast and you can survive.

Well, let's put it this way: our new Mayor may actually figure out a way to get all of our currently Homeless in to housing, but after trump & musk start taking away from everyone - there will just end up being as many ppl put out into the streets to replace those that had just gotten housed. It will be like a revolving door, rather than an end all - be all!!

If the illegal get sent back as planned that’s billions in revenue saved right there (State asst, food stamps, medical FREE SCHOOLING/COLLEGE TUITION, housing) & instead, all that money refurbishing all the empty malls, factories, old prisons & houses & turn them into income driven housing while mandatory drug testing for State asst WILL weed out the wheat from the chaff👉it’s certainly Doable but it will take true dedication & effort to remedy the ailment!)
