The line work is my favorite part! I struggled with whether to start forgoing black lines for colored lines like many of my favorite artists, but ultimately decided against it. The lines are the part i enjoy the most, and i think they're what I've mastered the most on account of that. :)
Me too, inking is very satisfying indeed, but i think i ll probably try to do some parts without ink to give a more realistic feel. Also is a bit annoying to start learning new techniques when you feel confortable at one. I spent a lot of time doing inks and i feel decent at it, so it s easier to stay in this confort zone 😅 i think that if someone wanna be a good artist, has to try different things tho
People who like doing line work are so lucky imo! Nice line work is so beautiful. I can somewhat do it but for me it's so excruciating that drawing becomes painful. I had to find another method before I stopped wanting to draw lol
The cover illustration for volume 3 is very nice. By looking at the picture, even without the explanation at the beginning, you can tell that it was created based on Yusuke Murata's style. It is such a good work. I support your efforts to bring Japanese-inspired manga to the rest of the world! Please keep up the good work.
Seeing your work is always so inspiring… Especially when you work with markers and basic liners, makes me realize it’s not all about the tool but also the artist’s ability.
omg i remember doing this in school!! i would always remove some lines while drawing realistic pieces, but i never thought of doing it in a stylized piece. it actually helps so much
Stumbled upon your manga Apple Black in a comic book store here in Sweden. Bought it and looking forward to reading it. Feels good to support your creativity and the inspiration that you given me the last six years. Cheers!
Wow I haven’t watched one of your videos in a fat minute, it’s crazy to see that apple black is now has physical books. I haven’t ever read the books but when I first found you I was a small art child trying to find tips on art, now I’m much better than I was back then and I will never forget that one video you made on folds that taught me what I know today.
Daaaaamn that's badass!!!!! Volume 1 is still my favorite I just like the blue all over it really makes it look different from other manga and the feeling of the book itself is so satisfying to touch. Imma do another video of this series and channel, I hope you get the chance to see it when it comes out XP also, already pre-ordered Volume 2 awhile ago so can't wait to do an unboxing
Murata is actually only the artist for Eyeshield as well. Also purchasing Apple Black volume 1 tonight, had the og one digitally but going physical this time.
Very informative video .I never liked lineart as a whole just in certain spots. This made perfect sense .Also I gotta try making digital adjustments to a traditional drawing.Ive colored a traditional sketch on my tablet b4 so it shouldn't be hard .👍🏽🐻
Yo. I'll admit, I haven't been keeping up with the journey from start to finish or anything like that. But I saw your manga for physical sale on a shelf at the store and I immediately thought "Holy shit he actually did it! Good for him!!" I'm proud of you kind stranger. Keep up the work.
I've been depressed for a long time. Whenever I try to draw like used to, I simply get tired and end up trashing the work. After watching your vidz, I think I might try getting back into it manga, it would be nice to feel that passion again like I once did.
CONSISTENCYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! W video man preciate the tutorials lately but don't burn yourself out just yet art community needs a mentor to inspire em frfr
I learned the hard way... because I have no patience and therefore, my markers make the lineart bleed away... That i work much better applying copic markers directly on colored pencil sketches. This way I can decide later on where I want the lines to go, where to make them thicker or thinner, and if I want to make the lines softer with a colored lineart or something else. It can be super fun, I encourage you to try.
Lately, whenever I watercolor or use alcohol markers, I've never used ink pens for line art. My lining is so bad that I gave up on it. Hearing this has helped me feel assured that that's not a bad thing to do
I am literally the biggest fan of one punch man. I even started my own comic coz of it. Thanks for sharing this coz I used to wonder why it looked so good and mine looked meh. You're talented and great at art. Keep it up.
Thanks for the tips man, really appreciate it! Alot of very helpful things there that I'm looking forward to practicing myself. Also, love your artwork and am very interested in checking out your work, Apple Black. Might pick up a volume sometime soon!
The only problem I’m having is how do you determine the size to draw your cover traditionally? I didn’t see you use any measurements similar to printing size, so do you just draw freely on large paper without measurements? Anyone answer please
It depends on what you're drawing and what size you want the drawing to be as well as the cover size. If you use measurements, use them in a minimal way (straight lines, outlines, ect.) and free style the rest. If you don't plan on using measurements, work with the size of the paper you have and free style it. When it comes to this type of thing, you have to know where you want the angles to be and how big or small the drawing has to be in order to cover a good portion of the cover/paper ect. I hope this helped.
These covers are similar in size to your usual A5/B5 paper, so it doesn't really make a difference, A4 is completely fine, if it was cards, posters or even banners, then that would be a problem, bc you would have to adjust detail level for a card and for a poster you would have to draw on a B4 or A3, to get more detailed and give nuance to the linework.
I like to start bigger. You can typically find Bristol paper (most commonly used comic paper) with guidelines for the bleed if you need it. And then you can make adjustments after scanning to make if fit the proper size for your project.
If you're worried about dimensions that much then think of it this way. The bigger your space the more room you have to draw. The smaller your space the less room you have to draw. You always want to upscale whatever your target measurement is for instance I draw mostly and export my files at 1920x1080 I usually double that number and get 3840x 2160. This allows me to paint at 4K so I can get all my details in the painting, then when it comes to downsizing those details will still be there. So a typical cover is usually 5 inches x 7.5 inches or 12.70 cm x 19.05 cm so you would just double that number. tl;dr / my opinion: You don't need dimensions if you're going to draw big and scale it down you have all that information on your painting still there, you can just adjust when you're finalizing the cover. You're probably better off drawing at your comfortable dimension / resolution then downscaling.
You should've put the Black Bar on the bottom, behind the character's foot, to make it look like he's leaping out of the cover, just move the name a bit to the side.
My Apple Black Power & wand: Instantly makes north and south magnetic fields on living and non-living things 🧲but only two at a time. Wand is a bag of coins he/she carries

My favorite pen for traditional inking are Staedler pigment pens. They just flow so nicely but have the same type of controlled size as a micron.
If you're worried about dimensions that much then think of it this way.
