    I’ve been working on a comic since late December of last year. I know what happens in the middle and end of the story. Straight up, have a lot of stuff planned out. The beginning is what kills me. So far I’ve just been working on character turnarounds, outfit concepts, and character relationships.
    The first part of the story is what’s going to fumble me every time I go back to my plot brainstorming document.

      I’ve got the same stuff, but I don’t have the middle, even tho I know the ending I want, and the beginning which im drawing. I don’t even have a clue what im gonna do to connect the end and start other than a fully drawn 8 chapter training-sparring arc

      Just a suggestion but maybe try starting ur story in media res (in the middle of the story) since u already know it. Maybe a eye catching scene that captures the audiences attention. Then go back in time and try to think abt how everything lead to those events. It’s simple but works super well. The walking dead did it with its first episode and it’s imo one of the best first eps in any series.

    Just to give some perspective:
    Akira Toriyama wrote pretty much the entirety of Dragon Ball (including Z as they aren't separated in the Japanese manga like they are in the anime) essentially winging most things. And he created literally THE most influential manga not just in Japan but worldwide.
    So, don't think that just cuz you don't have every little detail planned out that that means you're not ready or good at making stories.

      There are so many examples of artist who do that, even today. I think people who actually think that the only good stories are completely thought out beforehand are just very ignorant.

  • @stevenporter7065
    @stevenporter7065 2 роки тому +30

    So from a business perspective and a quality of writing keeping the idea of how and when you want to end it is a good idea. Don't get bogged down with exact details in my opinion, just overall idea that you can build to.
    However it is not necessary for your story to be successful. I believe the creator of Naruto was asked a similar question and he said he only knew the chapters up to around 9 would work out when creating it. That first mini arc is probably one of his more solid writing arcs. But he still didn't know the start to finish of the story and is hailed as having one of the most influential and biggest manga/anime of all time.
    When I was in a writing class they said this, "don't figure out your end of the story to early. If you do, you limit your direction for the story." It's true if you know every detail of the end it was harder to be imaginative for it. I would guess, don't quote me, Eichiro Oda, probably knew the idea of the end from the start of the series but has only concluded the exact 90+% of the details in his head somewhere in the last 2 to 10 years out of 22 ish years.
    It is very important to have a direction for your story so you make a good story, but it is not necessary to know everything because you limit the path and ending of the journey you are telling in my opinion.

    • @shadowslayer9988
      @shadowslayer9988 2 роки тому +4

      I think the middle of your story is where you get to be the most creative. Since authors mostly say know the beginning and ending of your story but they never say the middle.

    • @stevenporter7065
      @stevenporter7065 2 роки тому +2

      @@shadowslayer9988 I would say in some sense your right but also wrong. Cause part of the goal of the Middle is to get to the end/build to the end. If you limit your path to the end by having every detail thought out you constrict the middle and its creativity. The middle can be highly creative if done right though.

      personally my story has the end planned because I'm writing a sort of twisted fairytale. it's the origin of captain hook. everyone knows his his story goes, but only the end. how did he get there? is kind of like heartless if you've ever read that. it's the origin story fir the queen of hearts. it really just depends on the kind of story you're writing. are you writing a character who is learning who they are or getting to their destiny?

    When it comes to stories for me I would do these steps:
    1. Write down ideas how the story would start. [for my Future manga it starts off in a war of some kind.]
    2. Character design, names, and backstory. [I've made 16 character names, designs, and backstory I always play it in my head.]
    But I changed my ways on how I make a story. Currently I made four main characters, and a few others and such. I'm doing my best to slowly take inspiration from anime, cartoons on how their stories start or take place. I also take info from different cultural outfits, designs, etc. I take the information and try and form my own original imaginary cultural outfits, world's, etc. Anyway, I hope you like my thoughts on story making. I would like to here your thoughts and tips to make a good story, anyway bye be safe! ^^

    10:24 HAHAHA OMG I know this feeling, sometimes a crazy idea just appears out of nowhere; I remember how suddenly I thought about some very grusome scene that may happen later in my story and I was shocked by myself, first thinking "oh no, this is too horrible, no way it will fit" etc, but then I reminded myself about stories like Attack on Titan, Black Butler, Tokyo Ghoul etc and I became a little bit braver 😏 sometimes I feel so emotionally engaged I even cry, I wonder if other creators can relate. To me it must mean I'm doing it right, I hope...

    I started my comic by sheer accident. Wanted it to be a 3 page comic but one panel was kept blanc because i had no idea what to do with it. In the end the panel got filled but needs to supper of another 57 pages to be logical. So it will be MAX 60 pages and the pages i have are from about... in the middle of the story so i am working from a center to the start and from the center to the end at the same time. I kinda like it but ofcourse it comes with some problems.

    I'm about to experience directing (along with voicing and editing) a Space Engineers series for the first time, but I already have a storyboard, voice actor list between my bro and I, and the script for our pilot episode.
    I'll tell you right now, if you're doing serialized anything, set your concepts up for one chapter or episode at a time if you can. We have a 3 month deadline for all of Fall, so plenty of time to work, and after that, we should be able to iron out problems in our workflow.

    I'd advise knowing the first few chapters, important moments, and the ending. That's it.
    The story may become more chaotic, which some people don't want their story to be.
    But don't over-plan before even starting to make it, if you then decide to change something later down the line as you write, then you may ruin the story you had planned.

    I have a few questions
    1. When and why did you what to make a manga? [Did someone motivate you or did you think it was a good idea out of goodwill?]
    2. How long did it take to make certain characters? [Their race, culture etc]
    3. How long have you been doing art? [ When did you start drawing or when you learned to draw?]
    I aplogize if these questions seems personal I'm just curious.

    When it comes to creating your own comic, especially if it's your passion project or main focus, it's crucial to understand every aspect of it from start to finish. If it's your baby, your Golden Goose, your main comic, then it deserves your utmost attention. Knowing all the key features and important details about it is essential because it sets the foundation for its success.
    However, if you're working on something less serious or part of a series but not the main storyline, like a SpongeBob-type comic, you may not need to delve into every detail from start to finish. The major difference lies in the level of freedom and structure each type of comic offers.
    For instance, with a serious comic, you may feel more restricted creatively, but this constraint can also be stimulating. It forces you to think critically and develop coherent storylines, akin to playing a video game with rules you set for yourself. On the other hand, a more cartoonish comic like SpongeBob allows for greater expression and spontaneity.
    Understanding your characters is paramount regardless of the comic's tone. Whether it's SpongeBob or a character like Luffy from One Piece, knowing their origins, motivations, and development arc is crucial for consistency throughout the series. Luffy's journey exemplifies this, showcasing his growth and adventures while staying true to his core values.
    Ultimately, the key question is: How well do you know your characters, and can you maintain consistency throughout the series? Whether your comic is serious or whimsical, understanding the nuances of storytelling and character development is essential for its success.

    The three-act structure is not the best one for long-form storytelling. Obviously, there's four and five-act structure (five-act is often seen in Shakespeare for example), but most Shonen manga does not fit well with 3-act structure. Steve Shives has a GREAT video where he likens long-form storytelling to album structure, i.e. how the songs on a music album are arranged to tell an emotional story. We see this a lot in concept albums in genres like melodic death metal and progressive rock. But this structure can also be applied to some of the most popular manga arcs, like the Saiyan and Frieza sagas in Dragon Ball, and even the opening four volumes in My Hero Academia.

    Good points! Great video!
    With knowing the key points in your story you can also better hint at things, leave secret clues to things but most importantly, you can tie all your story beats together in a meaningful way. Everything is connected. You can sort-of do this when you make things up as they go, but it’s definitely easier when you outline the main key points of your story. I personally don’t write scripts (I work alone) perse but I first outline my entire story. Then when I get to a chapter I will outline the chapter and then I do the same thing for scenes. Just bullet points. Saves me a lot of time. (I used to write my comics as a novel when I was a teen)

But this is only one of many worlds ive crafted from the ground up and my art skill isnt at the level i want to start it yet

    So how long do you think it will take you to make a series that has like 30 volumes?

    • @whytmangatv
      @whytmangatv  2 роки тому +9

      I'm focused on the first part, 18-20 volumes, will finish the 4th volume this year, If I can make 1-3 volumes a year with assistants after that, I'll be done in less than 10 years. may hire an artist like myself for the heavy lifting for the rest of the series, spin offs, sequels and more, if successful with the first part of the series.

    "Holy ghost smash that like button." and perhaps some other hints can be found in your series Apple Black. My question is this: are you a Christian? If so, I would love to contact you about some questions I have about being a Christian in the comic industry.
