If you can find some button Wood, it grows around mangrove. I'm in s.w. Fl. and we have been using it for a long time, My great grandad used it when we had the mullet runs. Good dried mangrove is also vary good! love your vids.
You need to try some pecan that is really good with fish when your smoking it it gives it a really good nutty taste but it's really good and since we live in Jacksonville is easy to get pecan wood
Crazy fun fishing all around those cool ray's. I am leaving Western Colorado to winter at our house in Bradenton. Any chance to run into you on the Gulf side? I fish off the pier's and book a charter usually once or twice before I go back in April.
WOW..... Some Stanz & Blue Gabe.... freebie press today!!!! Awesome!!!! Love to see you boys all backin each other. My utmost respect to all of you 👍💙👍
Pecan is very nice for fish Mesquite is best for beef or poultry i agree to strong for fish... fish is best with fruit woods like ive mention as well as apple but oak is just fine as well
I knew that was not this year. This year, all or most of the rays coming up through Daytona had ZERO fish on them. I would love to have a day like that. I have had some good days but nothing like that.
We fish cobia around markers and on the flats following cow rays, in Tampa Bay. I use cherry and oak for red meat. Fish deserves good old Bay. Course some places do not want you to cut Bay trees but you only need about two or three pounds of branches to do both racks in a CharGriller rig like mine (a 16 oz bag of Bay leaves will work or mangrove will do). Just enough smoke to patina the fish and let the heat finish it. With fish the heat needs to be below 225. Real smoking is not just about cooking.
Only time I've seen so many cobia was off Pakm Beach on the Blue Heron back in spring of 2016. They hung bonita off the boat to chum up bullsharks and the cobes were all over them. It was a hella fun day, but had to get the hooked cobia away from the bullsharks
It's always a good day when a new Joe VT Fishing video is up. I like fruit woods for smoking fish, like apple or cherry. They also work well with pork.
Alder , Apple , Cherry and Maple 60% Alder the rest play with . That’s my choice for smoking fish . Mesquite is good with pork and Beef . That’s my two cents 😁 alder grows around my area . Seattle Wa…. Oh and so do salmon .

That my friend, (assuming if we met we'd become friends) was a completely Amazing day upon the water!!! The Manta rays alone were worth the price of admission and then yanking Cobia from underneath and behind them, well that was just plain Magic!! Speaking of magic I have smoked fish before when I lived in Vancouver (actually just outside the city) and one day while loading up the smoker with a mix of 50/50 Alder / Apple chips I grabbed a handful of Cherrywood and threw it in so roughly 50% alder 35%Apple and 15% Cherry and found it was pretty damn yummy on the Lingcod that somehow managed to find it's way into my Little Chief electric smoker. So give that a whirl in your next smoker adventure or just start with the 50/50 Alder Apple mix and experiment as you will! Keep having fun in life!!
@@joevtfishing Happy to share (Canadian,....kinda what we do. lol) Enjoy mixing and experimenting and finding that mix that fits you the best for that fish, something oilier might need tweeking and then of course wild meats like Moose or deer you might want to mix some Mesquite and Hickory or Walnut. I like to add the fruit tree element in here too, Apple and Oak, or Cherry with Hickory are winners in my book!
Great video man, you guys crushed them. It's a wonder there wasn't 75 boats full of weekend warriors running the rays. Good job on the collars also, try a pair of wire cutters and it'll make life lots easier with cutting them out, and we never remove the skin it's a pain, so we cook it with skin on and it'll peel right off. Stay safe and keep up the good work.
This is what its like when people keep their mouth shut about rays, as well this is what is was like just 10 years ago, before the Yankees moved here but they’ve been moving here for the past 30 years
Try to find the jack daniels bourbon barrel chips. They may add a unique flavor to the fish! I just did some wild turkey with them and it came out great! Or something like maple for a more subtle smoke flavor!
Pecan or alder is my go to for fish

There is a plate on both sides of on the collar ... it makes cleaning fish throats a lot easier ... tight lines !!

What is the reason behind the cobia / ray relationship?
