- Here I am again. If you missed the note at the beginning, I've written it here as well:
Context:
Set after the Madrigal’s lose their powers. Dolores no longer has super-hearing and is feeling conflicted about it. She’s up late pondering the silence she’s never been able to truly bask in before, while also finding it a bit unsettling, because she had become used to the noise, as burdensome as it felt sometimes. Felix hears her singing and decides to check on her. As boisterous as he is, he’s always been thoughtful with his daughter and her gift, and tries to teach her the importance of silence, and how freeing it can be. Pepa notices her husband is out of bed and finds him and Dolores having a heart-to-heart. The two of them do their best to comfort their daughter.
I ended up changing directions with this song at least 3 times, I've got the Logic files to prove it. I may end up posting my other version, which is admittedly a lot happier sounding. Something in my brain just really doesn't like major chords, huh. Also, I changed fonts because copy and pasting every letter into Photoshop was making me question my sanity. I really hope y'all like this one, I'm not sure how I feel about it, but that happens with like everything I make. The next song I'll post is my demo of "Stage Fright", which was Camilo's Interlude before I made it PG. If y'all haven't questioned my mental state yet, hoo boy, you will. You will.
Notes about this song if you're interested:
The melody at the beginning is very similar to the scrapped melody I had for Camilo's Interlude, which is in my Lyric Breakdown video, if you wanna hear it.
Dolores could very likely hear her own heartbeat with her super-hearing, which is why I included the heartbeat sound throughout this song. The reason she's conflicted about her gift leaving is that it brought her comfort to know what was going on. Nothing surprised her, since she heard everything coming from a mile away. Now she's got to readjust to the unknown.
I used the same music box from On The Inside. My earlier version of the song was going to be with ukulele, then piano, and finally I decided on the music box. I recorded the vocals softer due to Dolores' habit of speaking quietly.
The little instrumental/vocal interlude after Dolores' first verse is when I imagine Felix hearing her, then deciding to go check on her.
My mention of Bruno wasn't entirely due to my crush on the man, but I do believe that he would have a complicated relationship with silence, due to his life in the walls. Had to be lonely. Also I'm proud of my "hourglass" line, hehe.
Pepa and Felix are the best hype couple, so the line "Ask your father/mother here" is meant to allude to their unconditional support of one another.
Dolores saying that Pepa stole Felix's thunder refers to her jumping into the conversation to throw in her motherly two cents, because she tends to take the spotlight in everything she participates in. Felix is 100 percent on board with this. Also, stealing one's thunder is a cute little reference to Pepa's powers. She's still unapologetically herself even after losing her Gift.

Can we please talk about how 10x more conflicting Dolores must have felt the first few days she lost her gift? Cause all her life she was forced to hear every single noise surrounding the Encanto but the one time she was freed from that burden was the same time Mirabel gone missing so imagine how helpless she felt for not being able to find her - to *hear* her - and feeling guilty that she actually feels relieved about the silence when it could have helped ensured that Mirabel is safe.
there's even a scene of the movie where Felix and Dolores are looking for Mirabel together and Dolores tries to hear for Mirabel but can't

I love this. I really loved their dynamic and I wish we saw more of Felix. And it’s so sweet- he’s giving his romantic daughter some romantic advice! 🥰 this song is right in line with the rest of yours- gorgeous, simple, and sweet. Great job
As an Autistic person who's hypersensitive to sound, and wears headphones almost all the time save for when at home to prevent panic attacks, I can relate to Dolores in that aspect. I often listen to music at all times as well to help drown out surroundings more effectively.
I remember the first time I wore noise cancellers in school and finding the sudden complete silence to be a shock, but comforting. Teachers hated allowing me to fully thrive though, so I was pretty much forced to have one ear hearing everything even when the teacher wasn't currently talking. This song made me almost fall asleep with how comforting the instrumental and lyrics are.
Anyway, TLDR: I love this song lol. It brings me a sense of safety that's so rare for me with how much trauma constantly digs at my subconscious

@CoolerCoolCool New Understandable. If you can afford it, and it doesn't cause sensory issues wearing them, you could try wearing headphones more often. They don't have to be noise canceling(noise canceling headphones tend to be super expensive), just wearing headphones and listening to some music through them can replicate the effect noise cancelers have.
With the chairs on carpet, you could ask your parents (if you live with them) to have chairs not be placed on carpets, so avoid the trigger. Depends on how willing your parents are to adapt though-
Plain chair legs can damage flooring, which is why many households use carpets. You could see if you can find something to put on the bottom of the chair legs to prevent floor damage, while also avoiding the sound trigger, if you do decide to get rid of the carpet.
I am so sorry you have to deal with ableism as well! An alternative that was cheaper for me was 'calmer' by flare, it's very compact, and although it doesn't cancel everything around you 100% it muffles distorted sounds and it's super soothing and comfortable, things get way more bearable with it! I would definitely recommend checking out, it's very tiny, even tinier than an earbud, very discreet!
@@absolute-creature I get sensory issues having stuff in my ear, which is why I avoid earbuds. So noise canceling headphones are fine for me. Mine are Bluetooth, so they're wireless. I've heard of Calmer before though. Sounds like a great, cheap option

"[silence] adds weight to the music" is *such* a banger line. maybe this is my dolores bias speaking, but this has got to be my favourite of your encanto songs so far. my favourite part is the soft, prolonged ringing (in the sense that the sound a glass harp makes is a "ringing," i mean) in the background at the beginning that keeps the space from feeling void-like. really nails the feeling of finally getting somewhere so quiet that the softest most constant sounds that usually filter into background nothing finally rise into focus.
I love how they talk about needing to sleep, it just fits the lullaby vibe of this song so much. really sounds like something they’d be singing at night if that makes sense

I swear, this one line made it occur to me that Pepa's kids probably don't tell her things that are bothering them because her emotions can directly cause a natural disaster?? And obviously Felix can't keep those things from his wife, so the kids wouldn't tell HIM either. The entire vibe behind this one line is that Pepa wants to make up for the many years that her children haven't been able to confide in her, all the while Dolores had to hear everything that was going on with everybody (and had no outlet). Dude, I am actually on the verge of tears imagining Pepa suddenly squeezing Dolores into a hug while saying this, allowing herself to cry and comfort her eldest child in arguably one of the worst moments of her life.

MAN the connection between Felix and Pepa asking why Dolores was awake, which we learn is due to her stress about the future and her identity, brought back around by Dolores asking why ALL of them were awake. The resounding moment of recognition before she asked, paired with the weight of that pause and echo afterwards, just hit SO GOOD?? Like holy shit. Oldest kid realizing that their parents ALSO stay awake worrying at night? Only for those same parents to handle it in a mature way, allowing their kid to de-stress without adding their own problems into the mix?? GOD I LOVE THIS AND I LOVE YOU TOO. 🥲❤️

I imagine that while all of this is happening, Antonio (who asked Camilo if he could sleep with him that night) goes close to the door of the room where they were sleeping to see and hear what these three were doing, and Camilo is pretending to be asleep while crying a bit cause he felt something similar to Dolores now that he can't use his shapeshifting powers to make people feel better. And when the song finishes, Antonio goes back to bed fast trying not to be seen by his parents, and Camilo hugs him a bit stronger

I love this! The scenario explanation in the beginning is so sweet which makes it so accurate at the same time. I can imagine Félix really trying to teach his daughter that quietness is important. The tone of this song and the singing is wonderful 👏

Read the description and have to say that I think the minor chords really fit this song, makes it feel like those songs parents sing to make their kids fall asleep (nursery rhyme I think? English isn't my first language.) Either way that really fits with what the song is talking about with her not being able to sleep and all. Also just a really good song, well done.

I don’t usually comment on videos but I just wanted to say all of your encanto songs have just been an comforting experience. this one in particular is just soothes my brain and puts feelings I can’t even express with words into a song. I kind of relate to Dolores in the sense that my mind and environment is always so noisy yet when it’s silent its just as, if not more uncomfortable. I also have chronic insomnia and recently it’s been particularly tough on my sleep schedule lol. but this song has just helps me so much with falling asleep and reminding myself to just relax and embrace that quiet. So I just want to say thank you for your incredible music and I’ll definitely keeping an ear out for your future songs :)

dqoejoiqejfoidpqk I just KNOW Pepa and Feliz tried so hard to comfort their kids when everything happened, even before, Dolores and Camilo's gifts can be so heavy on them, both physically and emotionally, so i always thought they must have the closest relationship with their parents and seek for them when they feel down, Casita falling just gave them a chance to talk about a part of themselves they didn't feel they could complain about (specially considering Mirabel's situation ans Abuela's expectations)
