Exploring Mount Charleston Campgrounds

- This week we hit the road to check out all the Campground options in the Mount Charlest/Lee Canyon area! There are only a few campgrounds on the mountain and some I had no idea even existed until I stumbled upon them while driving and exploring around the mountain!
Campground information
McWilliams Campground
Website: www.recreation...
Location:
36° 18' 33.0001" N 115° 40' 57.0000" W
Price:
Number of spots available: 74 Spots Total
Mix of FCFS and Reservations - check the website for additional information
Vibe: Spots are decently spread out, lots of spots available but a very popular campground so come early if you want a good spot. When we were driving around on a Friday morning we found a few spots available but a lot of spots were already reserved
We ran into a guy who was trying to save a spot on Thursday night by dropping off his trailer for the night and paying for the night, he unfortunately mentioned this to the camp host and the host said that wasn't allowed so if your trying to do that be stealth and don’t talk to the host lol
Amenities:
Parking Spot
Tent pad
Picnic Table
Grill and Firepit
Bathrooms
Potable water
No Service/Internet
Winter/Summer Availability: All campsites available during Summer
Spots 1-14 are available in Winter First Come First Serve(FF)
Winter camping at this Campground: • Go Fast Camper Winter ...
Mahogany Grove Group Campground
Website: www.recreation...
Location:
36° 18' 42.9998" N 115° 36' 58.0000" W
Price: $130 per night per GROUP site
Number of spots available: 6 group spots available, these spots are large and looks decently spread out. Looking at the website some spots are FF but most look like they need to be reserved ahead of time
Vibe: unfortunately we were not able to drive into the campground to check out the spots but looking at the pictures and Google satellite images, these spots are giant and limited (6 Group spots available)
Amenities:
Group Spots (very large and expensive for 1 person)
Parking Spot (spots specific per campsite)
Tent pads (5-7 pads per group site)
Picnic Table (6 tables per spot)
Grill and Firepit
Bathrooms
NO Potable water - must bring it in
No Service/Internet
Winter/Summer Availability:
Only available in the Summer between April to November
Hilltop Campground
Website: www.recreation...
Location: 36° 18' 35.5100" N 115° 36' 23.9900" W
Price: $23 a night
Number of spots available: 34 spots available (some are FCFS and others are reservation only)
Vibe: This is a hidden (very quiet) campground that you really wouldn't see or find unless you know its there. The campground is off the side of the mountain which is a bit weird, spots are a bit cramped and have awkward parking spots. The road around the campground is very narrow, I don’t recommend any 5th wheelers or large RVs into the campground. All roads are paved.
We found a few available campsites early Friday morning
Amenities:
Accessibility spots available
Individual Spots (spots are a bit smaller and closer together)
Parking Spot (1-2 parking spots per campsite)
Tent pads (1-2 pads per site)
Picnic Table
Grill and Firepit
Bathrooms
Potable water available
No Service/Internet
Winter/Summer Availability:
Campground is open between May to November (closed for winter)
Fletcher View Campground
Website: www.fs.usda.go...
www.recreation...
Location: 36.262675, -115.615930
Price: $33 for a single RV Electric spot (which is all of them) and $58 for a double RV Electronic spot
Number of spots available: ONLY 11 sites available (surprising because it looked like there were a lot more than that when we drove by). Even numbers are FF and odd numbered sites are by reservation only
Vibe: Probably one of the most popular campgrounds on the mountain, this campground is close to a lot of hiking trails and the lodge. This place was PACKED Friday morning so much so that there was a set of cones in front of the campground entrance which is crazy. This is probably my least favorite campground though because it lines the main road so I imagine you get a lot of road noise and a lot of foot traffic from people parking nearby to hike and explore the area.
Spots were large and spread out which is nice
Amenities:
RV Electric Hook up sites available
Accessibility spots available
Individual Spots (spots are a bit smaller and closer together)
Parking Spot (1-2 parking spots per campsite)
Tent pads (1-2 pads per site)
Picnic Table
Grill and Firepit
Bathrooms
Potable water available
No Service/Internet
Winter/Summer Availability:
Open season Jan - Dec
Dispersed camping more your style? • Exploring Mount Charle...
Thanks for watching!
Your video is AWESOME SAUCE!!! Thank you so much! This is exactly what I'm looking for. Not easy finding general info's about Mt Charleston campings.
Glad the videos r helpful! Appreciate the feedback, thanks for watching!
When we had our rv, Fletcher View was our favorite! 👍🏽 Unfortunately, Covid made it more popular and therefore more difficult to secure reservations. The first-come, first-served sites we found to be occupied mostly by long term (2 weeks) folks. We now prefer dispersed camping and enjoy not having the noise pollution that comes with staying in campgrounds. Awesome video! 🙌🏽
Thanks guys! And yes completely agree we love our dispersed camping vs campgrounds lol We were pretty surprised checking out these campgrounds on a Friday night, not many spots available. Can't imagine coming out there on a Friday night you prob wouldnt find anything
Great stuff. Packed full of information. Thanks for the tour and research. Much appreciated!!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks Suz!
Howdy. I made it to Bozeman after a 38 hour drive from Maine. The GFC is being installed tomorrow. Excited.
Damn! Safe travels out there! Congrats on the GFC install!
Good info. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful thanks!
Starlink RV if you need that internet! As long as you have open sky and not socked in by trees, it works great.
Thats awesome! I've heard good things and i'm definitely intrigued! if we end up going full time on the road we will definitely look into Starlink
thanks for the info helps alot
Glad you found it helpful! Cheers Shaun!
I usually do Mack's or Champion because I'm cheap. Good to see what the campgrounds look like though. If they had signal I'd totally pay for a site and work from up there a couple days.
Same! Lol if there was signal I’d be working out there too
We just saw you driving down the 50 in Folsom CA
Lol yea! We’re doing a CA1 trip we we’re on the way to sacrament and wine country and then hitting the PCH!
Can i get the link to the dispersed campgrounds - i cant seem to find it
Hey Lundon, here you go! ua-cam.com/video/PFuWbjhkaJ0/v-deo.html
Is the Mac Williams camp site first come first serve and free? For Tuesdays ? Or do they charge the $33 night fee as well?
Sadly not free any day of the week (that would be awesome though lol)
😊
🙌
Are those wild horses or am I a idiot?
Hey Jimmy! I believe those are wild horses (this was the first time we've ever seen them on the mountain) It didnt look like they belonged to anyone lol
That sucks, that you can't go up and pay/reserve a spot... It doesn't matter. You're still paying for the extra day/nite.. actually you're paying for the night you're not there..
Right?? So true
Campground camping = Lame.
Yeah I like dispersed camping more but sometimes campgrounds are nice/convenient and sometimes the only option to camp in specific areas. Thanks for watching!
