Billy Strings - "Dust In A Baggie" | Live at the Opry | Opry
/ oprylive
I’ve been an avid guitar player for 22 years, performing for many of them… Billy has inspired me to pursue a career in cooking.
😂
🤣
Or writing. That was brilliant.
My brother has been playing off and on for over 40 years and he'll never come close to 10% as good as Billy. Some people have it and some people don't. William Apostol has a God given talent along with being surrounded by a musical family. I wish he'd come somewhere within a hundred miles of here, by golly I'd be there. We're entertainment starved out here in "The Land Between Two Rivers."
Lmfao
Wow, in the last 10 minutes I've watched this guy go from playing on a couch at a party to playing live at the Opry. Amazing. Dreams do come true!
I watched it the other way round and wondered how someone's career could go so badly wrong.
Joe Lonsdale underrated comment
I just did the same thing. Honestly I like the couch version much better ! Not a knock on this one, its great. He just wails on guitar and its showcased in the couch video better
And so fast
It’s way better when it’s just him in his nerd outfit.
I’m a 900yr old Druid mage who normally only listens to Mongolian throat singing and Burl Ives but I love this!
"Mongolian throat singing and Burl Ives" 😂
Look, I don't care which of the elder gods you follow, A Little Bitty Tear is just a damned fine Burl Ives song.
I just choked on my cracker reading this! Hahaha
You every get 20 years for some dust in a baggie?
"druid mage" lol
I want someone to look at me like the way Billy watches his band play solos!
I love when he does guitar solos. It looks like he doesn't know what his fingers are gonna do and he's pleasantly surprised at the results
I think that you are dead on, lol
Speaking as a guitar player, you are mostly correct. I'm not in Billy's league, but when I'm tearing it up I just kind of aim in a direction and let my fingers decide exactly where to go. Sometimes I am indeed surprised. I imagine at Billy's skill the surprise is even better.
Flow state. Look it up.
jtswatsup I just looked it up. That's pretty cool, I've never heard that term before. I didn't think being "in the zone" was a legitimate mental state. At least not to that degree.
@@jtswatsup yes haha! Or tash sultana!

@paperscratcher Yeah, plus it's not that inappropriate really - it's not exactly glorifying drug use - just the opposite.
Exactly what I thought although when you think back theres been some truth all along in country music thats one of the things that make it great
Meh, you should look up the stuff Monroe, Flatts, and Scruggs played
Sturgill Simpson player “Turtles All The Wat Down” there too. It just bashes religion and says drugs helped him see the world in a better way
Billy looks like the dude smoking the unlit cigarette on the couch version 😂😂😂
Plot twist: the guy with the unlit cig is the guy playing the banjo lol
That dude was hitting that unlit smoke hard and often!
😂
T 25 lmao yeah he was 😂😂😂
Jon Turn 😯 you could be on to something
Good times tho, being lit to the point you’re puffing on an unlit stick for 5 mi utes
I have played the guitar for many years for fun. I am slightly more familiar with the instrument than the average person. That being said, I dont think a non-guitarist can fully appreciate just how good Billy Strings is. He is a once in a generation musical phenomenon.
As a musician who plays another instrument but has played with many good to great guitarists... I fully appreciate what it takes to do what he does. He's also writes great songs, has got star quality, and that pays the bills sooner than great playing. .
I have played guitar and bass as a hobby for over 40 years. I have been trying to get non musicians to understand just how difficult the flat picking is that he does on this solo, especially at that speed. It’s almost impossible to explain to them, but they are still pretty amazed at how good he is. I wish they really understood how difficult that is, but Billy still makes it look easy.
He’s the bob marley of this generation. Hear me out. Nobody dislikes him.
I like when he's checking out his bandmates during their solos.
Dude is vibing so hard.
It's a selfless act of respect and proper stage etiquette
It’s great. He does it in every live performance I’ve seen on here. The dude just loves music and can shred a guitar
It helps that his band mates are world class.
(It’s the methamphetamine)
The banjo player and mandolinist are awesome . Not to take away form the bassist but man they were shredding
He should bring the unlit smoke kid with him on tour as a stage prop
hahahahahaha
lol 😂 ikr lol
He’s the banjo player actually so it kinda came true
It took that kid 4 minutes to light a cig
Lol! He can do that knee slap 😂

@@Sam-et3ve Bluegrass was inspired buy the blues it was Bill Monroe's take on the music of a local blue player where he grew up.it took me awhile to hear it myself different keys same chord progression still pentatonic scale
@@mbsnyderc partly that and partly the music from Ireland,Scotland, and England that the settlers brought with them. Bill Munroe has discussed it many a time.
Bluegrass came from old time mountain (Appalachian) music which came from Ireland and Scotland. Almost all of the early bluegrass songs were a Monroe spin on mountain ballads that if you look you can find earlier Irish/Scottish versions of the lyrics and melodies.
Billie Strings is so unbelievable! We haven't had a bluegrass artist as talented as him in a VERY long time. I can't get enough of this.

This is surprisingly fresh for the Opry! Americana can survive and thrive if it's recognized
This is not Americana. This is more bluegrass backwoods gospel style. At no point should this ever be deemed Americana.
@@jacobhartman7445 Look up what Americana is. It's just a catchall phrase for American roots music. That means anything that been changed from it's original form into something uniquely American: blues, country, southern gospel, whatever. The Opry is not a Country venue, nor a Bluegrass venue, it's a red-blooded Americana venue.
jacob hartman Definitely Americana
@@jacobhartman7445 Nope. Just bluegrass
Quit with the Americana term. We all know it's just bullshit. Americana is a blanket term used to define something you can't put into a specific genre and defining genres are bullshit to begin with.

I despise most of the "new" country, has no soul like this! I'd not heard of Billy before today. I'm thrilled! Now I want to hear everything he's recorded.
My Mama's people were Okies and Appalachian hillfolk who weren't trained musicians, but bluegrass music was in their DNA. As a child, I loved our family reunions at a state park where we rented out all the cabins for one weekend every year. In the evenings, the guitars, banjos, and mandolins came out and they all sang those beautiful old "murder ballads" in gorgeous harmonies. Those who weren't great singers sang comedic songs; the evening wasn't done until Aunt DoDo sang "The Burglar Man".
They have all passed now, but my siblings and cousins are mostly musicians. Sadly, we don't get together anymore. I love to sing, but I'm not good at it, so I'm the one who sings the silly songs now. In case anyone's curious, here's a version of the "burglar" song: ua-cam.com/video/93FLVgkl9-s/v-deo.html
Because wrangler's are not skinny jeans LMFAO and original bluegrass players didn't wear dingy beat up hand me downs that was small LMFAO

He’s so good that he amazes himself as he’s soloing

I love the way Billy has made bluegrass relevant to another generation and their experiences. Any one familiar with the hills and hollers of middle America today knows how meth is the new moonshine and this really speaks to that generation.
Gotta love that face he makes right near the end of his solo. Billy's face goes from "How in god's name am i going to resolve this" to "Ah there, did it"
He found the perfect people to play with him.

Billy Strings is the Stevie Ray Vaughan of Bluegrass.
Sounds a lot like Travis Tritt, too.
Dean Smith Not really. He is good, and getting better. Let’s see if he can catch up with old Norman Blake.
Oh, please! He is not, nor will he ever be even half as good or half as important to music as SRV.
SilvioManfredDante85 How is that? It’s a completely different type of music? And, you are also 100% wrong. He sang a song about drugs at the Opry, and they only recently started allowing that. He is part of a movement that is mixing old and new musical styles. Actually changing the music that is being recorded. SRV on the other hand was an incredible guitarist, he wasn’t about changing the whole scene. Also, Stevie like many other rock and roll guitarists, admitted numerous times that he couldn’t play country guitar. Both old school flat picking and finger picking were above his talent. I am a huge SRV fan, but I’m not an idiot who thinks that one type of music is everything. And although he was very good at what he did, there were reasons he didn’t play other types of music. He picked the one where he could excel. If he had not died young, who knows what he could have done. But we will never know now.
Adam R “he wasn’t about changing the whole scene.”
That statement is 100% wrong. SRV single handily brought back the blues in the heyday of 80’s hair band rock. However, I agree Billy Strings is amazing.
The right way the Grand Ole Opry should sound
The Billy solo was perfect for the moment, man.

This whole performance is bluegrass perfection. The songwriting, each musician’s part, and the recording. To me, it’s better than the other recordings out there. I love how the bass player slowly drops down at the end of Billy’s solo, dropping right back to the chorus. Perfection on all levels.
Another cool part is right at 2:21 during Billy’s break. I think it’s the mandolin adding a chord in between his chops that sort of sounds like a truck horn. I don’t think it’s coming from the guitar or banjo but it really adds a nice touch.
Wait. It is coming from the guitar. It happens again around 2:29.
Playing like that on an acoustic is crazy😮
i was told today i look like him, and man was i happy😊
Yes!!! Go Billy!!!! Great job opry for recognizing our new generation of bluegrass!
The fact a song like this made it on this stage is amazing.
