My father, when he was a young Army sapper helped build that original railway line and later on was one of a couple of sappers who drove the small loco. He also helped install the gun and search light positions on Rottnest and also on the mainland. He spent most of the War up in Asia and remained in the Army until the early 70's. I think his favourite time in the Army was when he was on Rottnest.
Nice synchronicity of the swifts buzzing around for a free feed and the light plane touchdown at the same time.😉 The eternal blue skies of the last 6 months of no rain and just a glimpse of the magic Indian ocean too.🐳
Surely Rottnest Island would be a perfect place to install a full tram line? An independent right of way which doesn't interfere with pedestrian/bike dominated roads like buses do, the ability to go quicker, making important spots on the island more accessible. Something like a loop from the jetty up through to the Primary School, Pinky's, then Geordie Bay, around the lakes' perimeter to the lighthouse, then connecting to the Oliver Hill track to stop at Oliver Hill, the Airport, Kingstown Barracks, the Settlement and back to the jetty.
@caskadestudio the railway was a rebuild of original railway that was built on the island for the military years ago. A tram wouldn't be a bad idea also. 👍😀
Thanks, great video. Some people I know (ex WAGR & other places) helped to rebuild the railway. As far as the whistle blowing is concerned, there is a standard for this because of the location, viewing etc, amount of likely vehicle or pedestrian traffic, risk assessment and so on. It is better to use the whistle long and loud, and not have a collision, than to NOT use it, and have a collision. I can imagines the yikes, and complaints, if the whistle was not used at all, or only sparingly, and one of their loved ones was hit or was nearly hit by a rail vehicle of some sort. Having watched many US videos of trains - diesel and steam - and heard the almost continuous whistling and bell ringing, used by loco drivers (engineers), even when there are no level crossings within cooee, they make our drivers here look like rank amateurs compared to some of them. By the way, I have never in all my years, seen a situation where rail vehicle left the line, hit something or some one, and then rejoined the rails and continued on. So why do headlines usually state, train hits car (or truck or bus or whatever). Why not, road vehicle hits train, which is what is usually the case.
The people that worked on rebuilding this railway done a great job. Plenty of tourists can now enjoy the ride into the history of the island. Glad you enjoyed it. 👍 😀
did this trip some years ago, love Rottnest, great place, also did a trip in the Hotham Valley railway, doe not go on the mainline now more's the pity.got a tourist railway in Pemberton, rode in the cab of 1213 steam loco, had my video recordin evey inch of the way.1213 is just a static display now.All the best .
Loved this. We went to WA in 1993 and 2000. Weather wouldn't allow us the trip to Rottnest so I missed seeing this tramline. I was on Rottness in 1974 when there was only a bus service. Did you see any Quokka's?
I thought it was a true railway system .. never heard it referred to as a tram. If so, could this be due to the drivers being bus drivers? I worked for the company that runs the trans-island bus and was told that if I was seconded to Rottnest that I'd also be driving the railcar.
And before any other smart-alec decides to explain and ruin the joke. I know exactly how it's done. It uses a transition effect called *"Fade"* and I've used the effect myself a number of times!.

Considering the track formation, it's a very smooth ride. Is the railmotor the only piece of rollingstock on the line? Do they have any other equipment for line maintenance?
I'm not sure what track machines they have but they do have a small locomotive and a couple of carriages that were used before the railmotors arrived although I don't know if they are still in a usable state. 👍😄
@@driver667.. the last time I rode the line to Oliver Hill, it wasn't comfortable in the least. Loved the trip, but the seats were wooden and the suspension was dreadful. Has this changed?
I don’t know why it bothered me so much, but I reckon old mate on the horn could just do short, sharp blasts instead of holding it down so long where there is so little traffic.
So, you're on Rottnest Island, if you spot any of the little animals that gave the island its name(because the Dutch thought they were rats), give them a wave and say "hi, Barry!" Because they're called *Quokas!* Get it? "Barry Quoka!" LOL😁😁😁

Thanks for sharing. I didn't realize that there is a railway on Rottnest Island.
An old war time railway rebuilt in the early 1990's for tourists. Glad you enjoyed it 👍 😀
Few people are aware of this because bicycles are easy to get around on.
