She's really a great actress. Her expressions are so nuanced. She steals the scenes and you just look at her.
Honestly, even if she had a very minor role in Million Yen Women, she kinda stuck to me in that show. She's actually a really good actress.
She's even more amazing than Mariko. They could make a great season 2 where Fuji and Anjin find love in the backdrop of the great clan war. And it would be so cool if Anjin ends up being Shogun with Fuji by his side. Let's be honest. Toranaga is a monster as he randomly kills villagers to keep up his ruse that Christians burned Anjin ship when in fact it was Toranaga who burned it.
@@jonfreeman9682 Except it didn't happen in the book or the original series. The threat to the village was given by Yabu and concerned the villagers teaching Blackthorne how to speak Japanese and to learn their customs. That is when he attempted to commit Seppuku. It was very early in both the book and the original series.
@@jonfreeman9682 this aint that kind of story. It's fiction based on real history and follows that closely. Anjin isn't the "hero" he's a protagonist in a drama trying to survive and find himself. This is focused on relationships between everyone in a fucked up nuanced world, it's not a white savior plot. Fucked as japan is , Toranaga will actually bring peace in the end (read the book/real history).

Fuji's final scene with Blackthorn out on the water was award worthy. Her character arc was one of the best things about the series.

That's not how you make a strong character. Strength is relative and doesn't require masculine badboy energy all the time.
Hell, often times such energy is just a sign of masking weak will and spirit.

She was in a lot of Japanese dramas I’ve watched, but I didn’t even realize because she was always in guest or supporting roles. Need to watch all of them again, I guess.😅
Even to me as a Japanese person, she is a beautiful and very Japanese woman.
Honestly I felt like Fuji was one of the greatest victims of her society. She was a woman of impeccable breeding and manners, who could trace her lineage back to one of the most respected generals of the Warring States period. Her husband was a retainer to one of the most respected men of the era, who moved through the halls of power like he belonged there.
And yet she would probably would have given it all up if it could have saved her child. She ultimately allowed it because that is what duty and her society demanded of her, but to ask a mother to sit by and let her infant son whom she loves with all her heart to be killed is cruel. She and this infant child did nothing wrong, and yet her child is taken from her just because "honor" must be satisfied.
She is a product of her environment, but she is also one of its greatest victims
However, she did the only thing that matters, in the same way as Mariko. Be honorable and faithful to your master.

Mariko and Fuji were both victims in their own way, and showed the brutality of the era quite succinctly, especially for women- under the veneer of politeness and civility, their humanity was being crushed. As Mariko says, in Feudal Japan, "women... are simply at war".
Always loved the look Mariko gives when Fuji pulls the pistols.

I like that, in this version, it was Fuji's idea to take the pistols rather than Mariko's.

I really enjoyed her character arc. She put her personal feelings aside in order to fulfill her duties, and never made anyone's life difficult in spite of her personal anguish. A good example of how to deal with adversity.

her beauty stand out even more.
She had one of the best moments of the entire series when she held the gun in defense of blackthorn
For me she was the most fascinating character in the series and I wish she had appeared more frequently than she did. There were just so many hidden depths to her and I have to admit the scene of her scattering the ashes of her husband and baby moved me to tears.
The kind of perfect 10 we will never see in our lifetime
It looks like she is saying goodbye to her past and trying to start a new life.

Suddenly Lady Ochiba ranked in the prediction of Emmys Nominee as a supporting actress and Fuji removed. It seems weird for me. We have to claim that Fuji is definitely well deserved.

She is one of the most quietly powerful characters in all recent cinema and Moeka Hoshi (*穂志もえか*) played her to perfection. Heart-breaking, uplifting.
She will be the most mezmerizing nun in Japan or in the whole world.
She should not be a nun but get together with Anjin. They should do a season 2 with a twist where Anjin becomes Shogun with Fuji by his side.

Fuji is one of my favorite characters. She says with a look, a raised eyebrow, or knowing glance more than pages of dialogue could. She broke my heart when her husband and baby died. Made me smile when she chased off Omi with Blackrhorne's gun. Her goodbye scene telling Blackthorne her decision to become a nun and the interment of her husband and baby's ashes in the sea were emotional and poignant as was her words that reminded us of Mariko's words to her about being the last to hold her baby and Blackthorne Mariko's cross.
A strong person who accepts tough shukumei and always does his best and keeps fighting.

@@ajifajriana1533 In the book, although it is likely she was pregnant, she wasn't sure, she still insisted on ending her life. Toranaga told her to wait 20 days and make it look like an accident. Before that she was negotiating with Toranaga for extra land and villages for Blackthorne's fief and for a wife and consort(s).
As Yabu, in his will, had ordered Omi's father to commit seppuku, and his mother to become a nun, Fujiko said that Toranaga could arrange for Omi's mother's last wish before becoming a nun to be that Omi divorce his wife, Midori, as the mother hated her. Blackthorne could then be manipulated into marrying Midori, as well as taking Kiku as a consort.
She is like typical women that Leiji Matsumoto draws, beautiful and at the same time something sad....

The female characters of Mariko, Usami Fuji, Kiku the geisha, Lady Ochiba in Shogun exuded a charming mystique of coyness and decorum, but with a steely resolve/inner strength of faithfulness to their duties/roles of their culture up to enduring pain and even sacrificing their lives if needed. This evoked the theme in Puccini’s Madame Butterfly. The female casting was awesome-their portrayals were so enchanting. I felt the death of Mariko and Fuji becoming a nun was very anticlimactic in the story.
She is my favourite character in the whole show. So elegant and yet her facial expression is full of subtle messages and a sense of sorrow. Now I want to watch more of her other Japanese movies.
With the announcement that Shogun is renewed for 2 more seasons, I pray/beg that she returns. Easily one of my favorite characters in the TV Show 🙏🙏 Fuji-sama come back
They all performed extremely well but Fuji steal my heart
On the surface it seems Blackthorne is the most tragic dude. He almost had two of the most beautiful women one could desire and lost both of them to the circumstances that he couldn't fully understand. One can only imagine what losses drive Toranaga's ascend to power.

Certainly, she is the one 'discovered ' star of this show... Very, very cute young lady, and dangerous with guns ! ... For me, Moeka Hoshi is the only major improvement compared to the 1980 version.... Hiromi Senno was lovely as Fujiko in the 1980 version although more reserved and quiet... But Moeka Hoshi has made a stunning role of Fujiko... We all love Fujiko...

Fuji was one of my favorite characters of the Series. She exuded such quiet strength. Beautiful, too. In my ignorance of the original story, and the way my "western" Television Series mind works, I half thought that she was going to end up romantically involved with Blackthorne. But their final scene together was even better than what I had anticipated. Instead of being together, they helped each other move on.

Funny you posted this. Fuji was my favorite character in the whole shogun series. I really noticed her after blackthorn’s first tryst with mariko, fuji made such expressions with her knowing glances that she instantly captured me. From that moment on, she was no longer a stranger to me.
There is a exquisite quality about her that has the very weather ablaze!
This woman's performance was outstanding- At times I was moved to tears by her courage and sacrifice. God Bless you Miss.

Loved her character, but I was saddened she wanted to become a nun. I was hoping that it would hint that she would stay with John and that a budding relationship could have started, to heal her hurt, and for him not to be alone.

Them having a platonic closeness is way better then forcing the "man and woman should be in a relationship" stereotype.
There's little doubt that Mariko is beautiful, loyal and fierce, but I fell in love with Fuji... 'Best Nun'.

Toranaga, who aspired to become the Shogun, caused immense suffering. He treated his people like pawns, valuing power over their lives. In the last episode, he was searching for the traitors who destroyed the boat, yet it was Toranaga himself who orchestrated its destruction. This is a classic example of narcissism. Great acting from this Actress
