GOING BACK to where I DRANK | & my first podcast recording

  • I lived in South West London for most of my heavier drinking years. So when the opportunity came to record a podcast episode about my recovery journey there, I thought I best bring you pals along to reflect!
When we're ready, going back to places that remind us of the past can be liberating. It highlighted to me on an emotional level, just how far I've come, how this is the most comfortable I've felt in my skin. How I no longer identify as that sad, lonely, ashamed-of-herself girl. Great success!
I let myself feel whatever wanted to come up and took the time to listen and make note of all the small nuances that softly nudged me as I walked down those old beaten streets.
A tool I like to use when I feel familiar and perhaps challenging emotions come up, is to speak to that version of myself. To gently reassure her that I am here for her now, to care for and look after her. To give her all of the love and support that she needs. To listen, accept and motivate her. To hold her hand and guide her gently down this dark tunnel, towards the glistening light that pulls us ever closer. Give yourself this gift of healing too, it really does work.
I have come far and sometimes going back - even physically, is just what we need in order to keep pushing forwards! Face it, feel it, accept it and let it go - and repeat. That, is how I've stayed alcohol free.

This piece is so lovely in so many ways! Exemplary of being comfortable to express one’s self, poise and vulnerability, reflection and in the now.
Awesome camera and edit too, you really have an eye for film. (And eyes for film :)

Hey Lisa, thank you for your kind comment - I was giving myself quite a hard time over this one, as the audio isn’t quite where I wanted it. Sometimes it takes other people’s perspective to appreciate the beauty in something. Thank you for the much needed lift! 🫶🏼

Thanks Al! We attach a lot of emotion to places, people and things eh! Difference is being awake as opposed to sticking our head in the sand! I'd rather be awake yessirrr ☺

Do you have places you purposely avoid because they hold difficult memories or feelings? 🙈
