- The WDR BIG BAND features Billy Test on Hammond organ with "Tune 88" a composition by Jeff Lorber. The WDR BIG BAND performs under the direction of former principal conductor Michael Abene, who also wrote the arrangement of the piece for "his band." Other solos are played by Andy Haderer on trumpet, Andy Hunter on trombone and Hans Dekker on drums. The concert "Beauty of the Beast" was recorded at the Gloria Theater / Cologne (September 2019).
Not a usual concert where the WDR Big Band sits on stage and the audience is seated in front of it. In the concert series "Pure Sounds" it is different: the WDR BIG BAND sits in the middle of the audience in a small theater. The focus is on large-scale jazz, but it is also about new acoustic and visual impressions. For the audience, it's about being there and experiencing it up close: Jazz up close and personal!

Einfach Spitze! Exciting ‘thinking out of the box’ start and then superb solos. Billy, Andy x2, Hans too! Great use of the mutes for brass. Mir gefällt der Nachhaltigkeitsgedanke der WDR-BIG-BAND - so wie das der Keyboarder zeigt: Es geht auch ohne Papier! ;-) ... der volle Bläser-Satz, so richtig Schlachzeuchs und tolle Solisten ... KLASSE! ... einziger Kritik-Punkt wäre, dass bei so viel geilem Funk der Gitarrist unterrepräsentiert war! ... GERNE MEHR FUNK!
