Pasquale is a beast, met him at the Barry Harris workshop in Rome - dude has all Bud Powell's tunes memorized from start to finish. Also, if you wanna hear some bird-like bebop, listen to his brother Luigi, most wonderful modern bepop saxophonist you will ever hear!
I love how the guitar fit in just like another one of the band members. I feel like in most groups the guitar usually ends up either taking over or becoming an obscure part of the rhythm section.
yeah and the thing i love the most about jazz guitarists is that when they know when to be sparse and quiet, they can be just as versatile as the piano, just in a different way.
if you watch closely you can see Pasquale throwing in the occasional comping and harmonization on top of that already incredibly challenging lead line. Amazing stuff!
For those who don't yet know, a word to the wise, Pasquale Grasso is in a different league from most other jazz guitarists. As you will discover from other videos on You Tube of Pasquale, he has a technique and a virtually unique ability to play guitar like Bud Powell and Art Tatum played piano. This is extremely difficult to accomplish on piano, but on guitar it is unprecedented. His style is 'old school' and yet he is a ground-breaking guitarist and musician - listen to some more clips, and you'll see what I mean. There are many other worthy contemporary jazz guitarists around, of course - such as Jonathan Kriesberg, Mike Moreno, Sylvain Luc, Julian Lage, maybe Camila Meza - yet none of them can do what Pasquale does. He is an extraordinary musician, and against a backdrop of super-talented peers, he stands out as being extra special.
Agreed. He's not 'yet another skilled guitarist'; his technique is a synthesis of classical and modern approaches fused with a contemporary virtuosity. Couple this with his musicality, and it's not hyperbolic to say his playing is breath-taking.
has anyone really studied his left hand fingerings? they are pretty original looking to my eye, and extremely economical seeming. curious if there are some basic ideas that someone has noticed
@@handdancin He uses chord inversion shapes for his arpeggios🔥 He uses a lot of 6Diminished harmonizations too.. Learn Barry Harris concepts, that's what I'm checking out now. Pasquale does it on guitar like no-one else I've seen yet. UA-cam (Things I've learned from Barry harris) a guitarist goes through some good stuff of Barry's.
Pasquale first came to my attention a couple of years ago, guesting with Joan Chamorro's Barcelona-based youth band, the Sant Andreu Jazz Band. This rehearsal confirms my suspicion at the time, that he is undoubtedly the finest bebop guitarist on the planet ... and beyond !!
An interesting and highly challenging number showing flavours of France and played with the verve, confidence and flair of an incredibly musical band, superbly arranged. Altogether outstanding and tight. And yes, I love it too.

He's great at the Art Tatum style as well.

Agreed. This guy knows how to blend really well. Amazing player.
very well said!

@@AlexPriceMusician A sophisticated degree of sound reinforcement is necessary to achieve that.
This guy's comping on guitar... just wow. Like a piano.
Trombonist deserves an honorable mention___
Thank you, Neptunade!
His name is Andy Hunter, if you mean the guy, who plays the trombone solo.
