    I once got into an argument online with a person who said football players are stupid and would be lucky to get a job flipping burgers if they were not playing. That comment really pissed me off because, although I never played football, I knew that learning a playbook, both in college and the pros, requires a lot of smarts and understanding.

    When i played i learned quickly that you only have to listen to what you're part is i played center and gaurd not to hard but when they moved me to tackle i had to relearn the playbook because of instead of knowing what the gaurd is doing now i had to know which side the tide end was lining up on and if he was blocking picking or running a route. All you madden players have it easy the play is drawn up for you imagine having to mentally draw up the play in your head. Then getting on the line looking at the Defense and making your reads and yelling and pointing blitz. Its amazing how fine tuned a play is and i can understand why it doesn't work out all the time.

    Manning would call all of this in code at the line. Receivers had to listen for their route while in the look already. Commentators always talked about how Manning’s no-huddle was up tempo but if you watch the play clock he almost always used all of it. It was no-huddle but it was often slower than huddling up because he had to say 4 routes in code plus throw in a few extra cancelled directions to mislead the defense.

    I just finished my last season of college football, at these higher levels of football it's all about concepts and personnel. If it's 11 or 12 personnel it's spread, anything else are pro style with a attached tight end. Then there is 2x1, 2x2, 3x1 kind of concepts where one word describes the routes for receivers. For example.... "Crush Lock beam" would be a 2x2 concept so starting from left to right the left side runs crush which is already a designated route and the right side runs beam routes because it's locked. Unless you are tagged like "Crush Beam Lock X Drive" then if your the X you run a drive. Everything is fancy is just blocking schemes motions and tail back stuff

    It's funny that they bring up the Texans.
    With "X" being the "dominate" receiver, With that play they have, because it's not a post or a deep route, Houston wouldn't put their most dominate receiver there because it's not distance, however, they might if the match up isn't good, but I mean I can still see them put Hopkins or Fuller there just to see a match up take place and get yardage.

    Playbooks tbh have defenitly gotten easier, especially for the players, at all levels. The 1997 NU playbook was around 250 pages, and players were expected to STUDY the whole damn thing. 1990 CU was north of 150. 1987 OU was north of 175. You had to study front to back and know exactly what you were doing. And the QBs for NU especially. They would have them audible depending on the shade of the linemen and the linebackers. In some ways its gotten harder, but in many ways its gotten far easier.

Hope this helps even though it’s 2 years later💪👍

    Are we not gonna talk about how the play drawing only has 10 players? Not 11?
    Is this suppose to be a “doubles” set motioned into a trips right set? With lineman slide coverage and tailback checking gap to outside then check down responsibility? Or is this suppose to be an empty set and they forgot to put the H back out with the Y and X? This is a simple scissors concept with Y early motion into an arrow route. Hard part to decipher is, lineman pass pro, and QB responsibility. Is this a drop, roll out, sprint out? And where the heck is my H back gonna protect me? Some unanswered questions here.

    Learning an NFL playbook has to be easier than learning everything you need to know to be an Electrician for one simple reason: in NFL football, if you screw up a play, nobody's house burns to the ground and no one could be electrocuted if you don't run a route right. You definitely can use less words to create this play. NFL coaches do an amazing job making football harder and more complicated than it should be. There are So many coaches outside the NFL that are miles long better rest assured.

    How does the "X" know what route to run based on that call?

    • @josheden832
      @josheden832 7 років тому +8

      Andy Smith that's what playbook is for. Memorize the plays

    • @nicholaspfarner1882
      @nicholaspfarner1882 7 років тому +12

      Andy Smith it really depends. in this kind of offense it's all memory based on what pass play is called and the x receiver must know what to do. if you don't know how an x y an z receiver works the z receiver always goes to the call unless something is said on the huddle like slot. the split end or x receiver always goes away from the call so on trips right he's the widest receiver to the left and the y is the tight end and he aligns to the call. kn the play he started off in a different alignment and motioned to the call. in this type of system the x receiver cam have special routes gameplaned to whatever team they are playing or its just about memory of what is called in the west coast play calling system they would call numbers for routes starting from the 1 receiver side to the receiver side and every receiver gets a route called out.

      The QB tags it in the huddle

    • @nicholaspfarner1882
      @nicholaspfarner1882 7 років тому +3

      Max Christensen the quarterback says exactly what is shown on the screen. some systems do that but most of the time the x receiver must know what to run. the team will most likely gameplan what route they run but personally I hate the erdhart-perkins system. it causes too much of a confusion for receivers who are retarted. I like the west coast play calling system that tells you exactly what route to run. if your in a west coast play calling system and you don't know what to do you can just look to see what side your on and know what route yoir supposed to do. in the erdhart-perkins play calling system it's based on key words which give you concepts to run and it could be confusing to some receivers because the same play can be called in many formations. the patriots run the erdhart-perkins play calling system and they run out of empty a lot so that shows that their team is full of smart receivers who are able to understand the playbook.

      julrodriguez50 it's the Qb, who legit can only line up in one spot in most playbooks, behind the center. The line is only shown to show gaps. Yes there's gun, pistol and under center but he's not going anywhere except in some crazy trick play.

    This video was disappointing. They're just shooting the bull for a full minute, then they adlib on one play for the rest of the time. Put something together that actually explores the complexity of an NFL playbook, like the title says. Make it more academic and less parlor chat.
