"... I like being with my best friend and that's what makes the trip fun..."... that was the sweetest moment of the video :) Thanks Susie and Luke ;) - Jeffrey
Luke you are one lucky guy to have your wife go out with you once in awhile! I call that hike a HUGE success because, although she was a little scared, she conquered her fear and pressed on! That is GREAT!
Hey great video guys! Nice to see Susan in this one. I like the change, it's a good mix between your solo trips which I enjoy watching and the family time with Susan. Great job keep it up and look forward to more!
This was an awesome trip and after talk. You two just worked so well together on camera, just awesome brother - my wife thought it was awesome too and has certainly changed her mind on hiking. I hope you and Susan make more together in the future. Take care both
Nice video, enjoyed watching. Really enjoy seeing the both of you on the video, and her perspective on backpacking. Hope to see more of the both of you. Thanks
Awesome video guys! Love the fact that you guys are best friends and can share time together hiking (and both of you enjoy it). Keep the videos coming. My son and I did some day hikes on the Appilachain Trail in the Roan Highlands this past June and I so want to get back and do some overnight hikes. Your videos have encouraged me to follow through on that...thanks for taking the time to put the videos together!!
Thank you for watching. We plan to have more adventures where I can come along, but Luke enjoys his solo adventures too. Hopefully he can get a multiple day trip in soon. - Susan
Excellent video guys! A++ You guys are great communicators. Let me preface this by saying I've never watched an entire UA-cam video of this length before. That is, until yours. You kept my attention the entire time, enteracted well, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to what comes next.
We were worried about the length of it! We talk a lot especially when together. HA! Thanks so much for watching us. I am excited to be in more videos. - Susan
Hey guys - me again :) Just wanted to say my GF and I really enjoyed this little mini-series, thank you both for taking the time to make it. It was really interesting for me personally as a guy to get a lady's perspective on things, and it definitely helped me frame my thoughts on what might be important to my lovely lady in terms of equipment, ability and comfort and her viewpoint as she gets involved in my strange hobby of exploring and enjoying the great outdoors. I really hope you do more videos like this, you guys are a great team and its great and really imteresting viewing seeing you working together. One final thing to mention, if you ever happen to make it to the across the pond you would definitely both be more than welcome in our home if you wanted to explore the Norfolk coastline/forests (Norfolk UK, that is) - we don't have a big place but we have big hearts and if you're ever in the area and need a base of operations, be it a place to store some kit, recharge some batteries/phones/use the internet, sleep under a solid roof in a warm bed between outdoor excursions or just stop by for a hot shower, a hot meal and the obligatory hot cup of tea, please consider our door and our home always open to you and yours. Thanks again, keep those vids coming and as you say, strength and honour my friends :) Neil.
***** Thank you so much Neil (and GF) for the invitation. We greatly appreciate that too. Who knows, maybe one day we will be able to visit. Take care and be well my friend - Luke
haha nice! Seriously, your husband has been an inspiration and a wealth of knowledge to me and many others. Thanks for supporting him, it helps many of us. Hoping to get a chance to hike a day or 2 of the A.T with him when I do that next year.
First of all, I definitely would like to see more of Susan in your videos. Hearing a new thoughts of a novice to the hiking is awesome. Good vIdeo. Thanks.
Wish I could get my wife out hiking. Susan, my wife's idea of a reward would be a trail with a five star hotel at each end and me carrying all the gear!
Great after video you two should be doing more video's together would love to see the two of you on more hikes.Keep them coming. PS my daughter loves your wife she actually likes hiking now after seeing her hike.
Great vid! Glad to see your wife join the adventure. She was right to be concerned about the decent. That can be the hardest part. I enjoyed your opinions. My wife's favorite color is purple too. I hope her bump doesn't hurt too much. How about mountain bunny!
Thank you so much for sharing a woman's experience and point of view on the various gear. I do have a question though - the sternum strap on Susan's Osprey I noticed rode high close to your throat, you didn't seem to have any complaints but I kept noticing that it seemed like it would irritate your throat, what did you think? I have a difficult time finding the right gear that fits my short 5' frame and I would be concerned about that. I am glad that I came across this adventure and review with your wife, this is refreshing and I do appreciate it. Thank you so much and please continue to share with your wife
Great video guys. I was wanting to know more about the sleeping pads and you covered them pretty well. I am definitely going to pick up the sunjack. The pic in the background with luke and the cat made me lol. I like Berry Bunny better but Purple Bunny is good too.
Awesome report..I am so lucky to have my lady love backpacking and the outdoors..Keep it up! Yeah I agree on the $1800 tent..Sierra Designs has a tendency to price themselves a bit high sometimes...BTW you guys make an awesome couple..
good wrap up. I enjoyed the interaction between you two. I would suggest Susan try out at least one trekking pole on your next difficult uphill hike. I'm in my 50s and I find that it makes a huge difference for me on uphill or difficult terrain. Keep the videos coming!
Don't worry about your ego seem to bite it good once a year, heck twice last year :) Good video. Luke you seem to be like me repeat visits to same place you love. I need to start hitting some knew spots.
Brian Wilcox Hey Hey Brian, yes sir you are right about the locations. Sadly I'm often restrained by time so I have to select places that I can get to quickly. I rather be in nature than driving on the roads. Cheers my friend. - Luke
I'm really glad to see a couple going out I have been looking for advice to show my long term girlfriend camping and hiking is a good thing for couples to do to connect and have fun
GREAT advice in your nutrition segment. Sounded very much like Michael Pollan. My wife and I went to grass-fed local meats (New England/New York area) years ago and I went to a plant-based diet almost two years ago after seeing Forks Over Knives which is not as hard as I expected it would be for backpacking. My total cholesterol dropped 80+ points and have had PRs in all road races I have run since then. Not for everyone, but certainly for me. Excellent video you two and thank you Susan for giving your input. My wife is definitely game for more trips, too.
That is so awesome to hear how your health improved with your diet change. I love Forks Over Knives too. It is really interesting. I don't have to eat a lot of meat, but so far haven't cut it out completely. Luke enjoys having meat in his diet so we just stick to the local meats. You just feel better when you do eat better. Glad you found what worked well for you. Thanks for watching us! - Susan
Great seeing you Susan! I am really interested in Backpacking,a woman, and a total novice. My concern is I am only 5 ft tall and I have no idea what kind of a pack would even fit me. I love the girlie colors too! Luke you make it look so easy lol
Thank you! I suggest you go out and try on different backpacks that are made for women. I am sure you can find one that would be comfortable for you. Check out an outdoor store like REI and get your torso measured so you will be able to find the best pack for you. Let me know what you get! I love girlie colors. Have you seen the teal color that is out there in some packs? I really want one! :) - Susan
I love the teal! Thanks for the advice too, I will sure do that. Being short has it advantages I don't have to duck very often :-) I am sure looking forward to your next adventure with Luke. I hope there is a teal spork too :-)
I use a travel pillow; $3-$4 @ local department store, 8 oz. Good for backpacking & car camping. Try some Backpacker's Pantry meals or other brands for future taste testing. Congrats Susan for catching the bug!
I am on the hunt for a good pillow! Thanks for the advice. Have you tried Backpacker's Pantry? Heard some mixed reviews about them, but we will have to try them. Thanks for watching us! - Susan
The problem with compressible, light pillows is they are always lacking loft. Try an empty pillowcase and stuff it with clothes? I plan on taking some BP on my next trip.
I'm sure the trip strengthen your relationship as well. I'm glad that you guys had a great time. As a viewer, I did too enjoy your trip. Inspired me to go out gain tomorrow and be with the nature. I'll be backpacking by my self... I wish that I could find me a girl who would appreciate the God's creation, the way us backpackers do. Rock on Luke! I hope to see more vids soon. Thanks. Randy from NJ
Thanks Luke great videos I love them always look forward to watching them. You should try and test out the bio lite stoves , don't know if you've heard of them but they charge anything that uses USB such as your phone. Thanks.
Nice one Luke and Susan, good wrap, I am about to test a pack similar to the one you used, but called a Bergen fits 100 liters but that is if used by the Military guys, I would never fit that amount of gear unless I did Everest!!, good news about the temp and the mats and blankets thanks again mate cheers from Australia Chris
paul cox yes I am an Aussie so I also do not use the term often but we do have now have a AUSCAM issue Bergen similar now to the Brit issue onebut lads carry large Alices modified or in SF whatever they want..problem with old Bergens was with heavy weight they broke your lower back and shredded your shoulders!:-}

Great video as always. Good idea to bring your wife in the adventure. Few things. Crux is light and small but when adding fuel not so much. Try old svea 123r with terra pot. You'll be amazed. (SVEA ACTUALLY FITS INSIDE OF THE TERRA...) Mine is 40 years old and still going strong, bought used for 40$ on Ebay. Also for coffee, try powdered milk (very light, a hario slim mini hand grinder and a small bag of coffee beans. Again, you'll be amazed how light this is and effective and you'll get really strong and fresh coffee, just boil for a minute or two on the stove. For cuben fiber tent, I suggest ZPacks Hexamid Duplex for two (obviously) retails at 595$ with options only 547 grams, just in your suggested price range for a highend tent like this. For camping in soaking wet conditions like your last hike also a dry bag with clothes inside if you don't have a waterproof backpack. Take care.
You guys are so great . Susan you do need to be in more vids with Luke and maybe yourself on some reviews. I will try to find you a bunny you can hang on your backpack. Where do I send it if I find one? Also glad you are ok when you fell. Take Care and be safe both of you
Thanks so much for the kind remarks! I hope to be in more videos and be part of The Outdoor Gear Review more. Private message us and we can send you an address. :) - Susan
for a pillow i just take a plain pillow case, and stuff it with my spare clothes, if the clothes aren't clean i'll put them in a small dry bag and then put that in the pillow case, which isn't perfect but its better than the few inflatable travel pillows ive tried.
Great, Great video Luke !! Susan, You seemed to be very comfortable,Great Job as well. And besides any body who eats a green smoothie is alright in my book. Luke I am looking for a good water resistant,Fleece lined shirt/jac any ideas(mid price ) I have been lookin thru some of your reviews but just curious what you thought. I want it for walking/jogging in light drizzle 1 to 2 hours 40 to 60 degree Far. Thanks for all you do
Please do another review of the MOFO.. I mean Mojo UFO tent in the winter/rain/four season environment. Maybe it will create a bigger market for more Cuban fiber tents and bring the price down.
Sorry for all the questions but I have one more for Susan. Susan before you had your own gear, did you use any of Luke's man gear (keep your mind out of the gutter and stay focused here) and how did it work for you? I have lots of camping/survival gear, several backpacks, sleeping bags, etc. but don't want to buy a lot of gear to take my wife out camping (if she ever agrees to it).
Hahaha okay trying to focus here......I have used his gear and it worked fine for the most part. Many packs are unisex and they will work. I enjoyed finding things that appealed to me though. Backpacks made for women are more likely to fit better and be more comfortable for your wife. Just take her shopping and let her pick a few things. :) - Susan
I think the hot and cold thing is a man and woman thing lol. Me and my fiance are the exact same way as you two. I am always hot and she's always freezing no matter what. She sleeps with 2-3 blankets and I am only half way under 1 blanket lol.
Sadly, no. That is why we have our 80/20 rule. 80% of the time we try to eat clean. Not everything will be organic though. Bush's baked beans do have simple ingredients that you can pronounce. They may not be perfect....they are close though and very tasty! - Susan
Not all titanium products are meant to be placed over a heat source and that's because titanium in general isn't a great conductor of heat. Some titanium products will literally melt and warp if placed upon a stove or very hot heat source. - Luke
TheOutdoorGearReview that blows my mind. I've never seen that. But you've used a wider spectrum of gear than I have so I trust what you say. But I know Toaks don't and my snow peak didn't. I'm guessing because it that cup and it's meant to drink from not cook in?
Saludos amigos... Great review. I could have the 1800 but there is no way I would buy it. I guess that for such amount of money the tent must be storm windproof. Any next trip/ hike coming up?
shcmoly Yes, I know what was in the video, my question was in reference to how the scale works in relation to the R value what's the highest possible rating?
Ok, the Xtherm is an insulated air pad R=5.7. Not sure if that is the highest but it is very high. An uninsulated pad is 1.0. Not much of an answer - you'll probably have to email the manufacturer you're interested in and ask the the corresponding temperature rating.
***** Hey there Karl, every pad is rated for a different temperature so I would find one that's good for the average temps in your area. The Therm-a-Rest NeoAir Xtherm is one of the highest that I know of. Hope that helps. Cheers. - Luke
53:57 minutes... really....That long? flew by would have never know if i had not read the comment about the time bellow. More videos with Susan please, she see's things on the trail that different than yourself and that makes an a pleasant change. solo or as a couple, reviewing gear or just being out in nature, your Chanel is extremely watchable and I love 'being' in a place that I otherwise could not experience with being in a country that does not allow what you can do. would love you to be able to get a bear in a shot (safely of course) as the wildest animal I can come across is a GOAT. Thank-you.
andrew moon Andrew my friend, we are glad that you enjoyed it. Also thank you for your kind words. Haha What type of goat did you come across? Cheers. - Luke
Luke would you recommend the USMC ILBE as something we should buy that is close to the Arcteryx pack you used or is there a better civilian pack with the same features for the price?
panzerabwerkanone I would with a civilian pack my friend. These military packs are cool but they are overly built for any sort of real backpacking. For a quick night out, they are great. For multi-days, too heavy. Cheers. - Luke
TheOutdoorGearReview Just subscribed. From one man to another- Luke damn you, you lucky SOB. lol You better had to have to go through hell & back to get a woman like that. Love your videos. Btw, I'm looking for the largest load carrying backpack/hiking bag I can get. But I want it with those folding compartments on the Yukon Bug Out Bag. And most jumbo packs don't have them. You got any advice for me mate? I'd appreciate it. God bless! Btw Susan don't let him get you going all commando climbing Mt Everest ok ;)
My God I can't believe how well you two compliment each other. I think you are about to become the leading gear review "Team" in the industry! I have a couple of girl friends I have been trying to get to go out back packing with me and your "Team Reviews" may just help with that. I want to see MUCH more "Purple Bunny" in the vids. One suggestion I have is for the two of you to study for a couple weeks and get your Ham Radio licenses. They are really easy to get now and the small hand held radios will allow you to be in contact even if you are out back packing 100 miles away and want to communicate with Susan. Check my videos for that. I also mention you on my lastest camping series.
I do crack up at tech ultralight yuppie back backers. "I will spend $100.00 to save 3 ounces," lol. For the Eureka watchers it will be 100 years before you have a camp in a cube, lol. Glad to see your sweetie wife on luke, she is much better looking than you, hehe!
ufo mojo 2 person www.amazon.com/Sierra-Designs-Mojo-2-Person-Ultralight/dp/B005N150G0/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1407331041&sr=8-1-fkmr1&keywords=sierra+designs+ufo+mojo actually correction that one dosnt say ufo i couldnt find that anywere and it says its 2lbs so im not sure its the same one
Great to see like-minded, clean eating, wholesome couple enjoying the outdoors!
Thank you! You can't beat the outdoors. Nature is just amazing! - Susan
Susan you should be proud of your self. All the best Mac.
Thank you so much! I do feel proud. That hike was not easy. - Susan
Susan, I like to see you in the vids! You add another input that us guys don't always think of.
John Tvrdy Great point John. I will pass that along to her.
Cheers.

Nice one Luke and Susan, good wrap, I am about to test a pack similar to the one you used, but called a Bergen fits 100 liters but that is if used by the Military guys, I would never fit that amount of gear unless I did Everest!!, good news about the temp and the mats and blankets
thanks again mate
cheers from Australia
Chris
Quadrant14 Thank you Chris!
Be well and take care.
- Luke
TheOutdoorGearReview no worries Luke
Bergen is a general term for all backpacks used by the British armed forces.
paul cox yes I am an Aussie so I also do not use the term often but we do have now have a AUSCAM issue Bergen similar now to the Brit issue onebut lads carry large Alices modified or in SF whatever they want..problem with old Bergens was with heavy weight they broke your lower back and shredded your shoulders!:-}
Take care.
François Goudreau Thank you Francois for sharing your opinions on the gear. Take care of yourself and enjoy the Adventure.
Cheers.
- Luke
You should look into the Mountain Hardwear Space Station tent. Its only 5,000 dollars.
metsfan12110 Haha Wha......I will have to look it up.
Only $5,000? Haha
- Luke
You guys are so great . Susan you do need to be in more vids with Luke and maybe yourself on some reviews. I will try to find you a bunny you can hang on your backpack. Where do I send it if I find one? Also glad you are ok when you fell. Take Care and be safe both of you
Thanks so much for the kind remarks! I hope to be in more videos and be part of The Outdoor Gear Review more. Private message us and we can send you an address. :) - Susan
That pillow I suggested is inflatable and takes up very little room when it's folded up.
BijouxBuddyBoys Thank you very much for the recommendation.
We'll check that out now.

Great guys! An after action review!
for a pillow i just take a plain pillow case, and stuff it with my spare clothes, if the clothes aren't clean i'll put them in a small dry bag and then put that in the pillow case, which isn't perfect but its better than the few inflatable travel pillows ive tried.
Paul Smith Sounds like a great pillow to me. Thanks for pointing that out.
Cheers.
- Luke
I would recommend if you have to get a pillow this from Amazon American Recreation Products 49244 12 x 20-Inch Camp Pillow
PureTazr Thank you very much my friend. I will let Susan know about it.
Cheers.
- Luke
Forgot to mention that my wife has a suggested trail name for Susan -"cottontail" - a famous Bunny

Question for Susan: Did you have to refrain from wearing lotion or other scented products so as not to attract bears?
:) - Susan
TheOutdoorGearReview Thanks Susan, Maybe someday I can convince my wife to go on trip with me.
You need a tv show. And when you get it I am here to be a producer, production manager, AP, PA, camera man, whatever you need I will do it...
Bobby Weber Haha Sounds great to me!
- Luke
when is the nexed over night advencher
Nick Del Vecchio I'm going to shoot the voting video this week so we should be out on the trails within a few weeks.
- Luke
I think the hot and cold thing is a man and woman thing lol. Me and my fiance are the exact same way as you two. I am always hot and she's always freezing no matter what. She sleeps with 2-3 blankets and I am only half way under 1 blanket lol.
CbusHas Haha That's funny for sure.
Be well my friend.
- Luke
Are Bush's baked beans organic???
Sadly, no. That is why we have our 80/20 rule. 80% of the time we try to eat clean. Not everything will be organic though. Bush's baked beans do have simple ingredients that you can pronounce. They may not be perfect....they are close though and very tasty! - Susan
Ti pots don't melt when you boil water in them. What's that about?
I use a Toaks pot, as have you. I'm curious what you meant by that.???
Not all titanium products are meant to be placed over a heat source and that's because titanium in general isn't a great conductor of heat. Some titanium products will literally melt and warp if placed upon a stove or very hot heat source. - Luke
TheOutdoorGearReview that blows my mind. I've never seen that. But you've used a wider spectrum of gear than I have so I trust what you say. But I know Toaks don't and my snow peak didn't. I'm guessing because it that cup and it's meant to drink from not cook in?
were is this hike?
Ash Snow Up In The Clouds - Overnight Adventure
Saludos amigos... Great review. I could have the 1800 but there is no way I would buy it. I guess that for such amount of money the tent must be storm windproof. Any next trip/ hike coming up?
Carlos Sepulveda I know what you mean Carlos. My next trip will be coming up soon.
Should be able to vote on the gear by the weekend.
- Luke
Was that the ILBE pack and if so how did it do on the hike
DpKxREVO Nope, that was the Echo pack. A smaller civilian version of the ILBE and it performed amazingly well. Great pack for sure.
- Luke
You guys are awesome! Quick question, what is a 'good' R rating? what's sort of top marks for a winter inflatable mat?
Thermarest Neo-Air Xtherm, it was in the video...
shcmoly Yes, I know what was in the video, my question was in reference to how the scale works in relation to the R value what's the highest possible rating?
Ok, the Xtherm is an insulated air pad R=5.7. Not sure if that is the highest but it is very high. An uninsulated pad is 1.0. Not much of an answer - you'll probably have to email the manufacturer you're interested in and ask the the corresponding temperature rating.
***** Hey there Karl,
every pad is rated for a different temperature so I would find one that's good for the average temps in your area. The Therm-a-Rest NeoAir Xtherm is one of the highest that I know of.
Hope that helps.
Cheers.
- Luke
shcmoly Thanks mate, that helps a lot! TheOutdoorGearReview Cheers for your reply! You guys have a good one. Happy hiking.
You didn't mention anything about the Paqulite kit you took with you. Did you get a chance to try it out?
mark keenan Sadly it got to late and I wasn't about to use it.
I will have a video coming up on it soon though.
Cheers.
Cheers.
- Luke
A Welsh mountain goat. by the way what on earth are biscuits and gravy?
Luke, which Rav Power battery bank model is that?
Wordsmyth8 Hey Words, this model doesn't seem to be in production any more. It's the Ravpower Powerbank Model RP-PB03.
Cheers.
Cheers.
- Luke
WHAT ABOUT THE MAD HOPPER
TheTnstick I like it! Let's see what Susie has to say about it...
I also mention you on my lastest camping series.
mobiltec Thank you so much my friend for your kind remarks.
Great recommendation on the Ham Radio too!
Take care and be well.
- Luke
I do crack up at tech ultralight yuppie back backers. "I will spend $100.00 to save 3 ounces," lol. For the Eureka watchers it will be 100 years before you have a camp in a cube, lol.
Glad to see your sweetie wife on luke, she is much better looking than you, hehe!
FishWaterBrewery Hahaha She really is isn't she?
Take care FishWater.
