Nice…. Reminiscant of the old school bow saws (buck saws). I have a couple hanging in my shop as decoration and it never occurred to to apply the design to a modern day tool. Brilliant!
Thank you for the consistently high quality videos. I usually have to watch multiple videos to completely understand the process but yours are so inclusive. Thanks for the hard work!
Honestly, just the intro alone makes me feel better. I've been increasingly maddened by how terrible I apparently am with a coping saw, positive I was missing something. Glad to hear it MAY just be a case of a cheap saw (like $30 off Amazon).
I had made the marking gauge from taylor , like the ones you made in your videos , and i can tell you those kits are stellar ... To be honest the one i made from the kit cuts the wood fibers better than my veritas !!!! His kits are quality work and your templates would definitely make this an easy build
Great looking project. Good to know that I'm not the only one that finds the performance lacking in the cheap coping saws. I found this with hacksaws too - the high tension frames are the only way to get a straight cut reliably.
Thanks for the video. I am finishing up the Gramercy kit version. Still need to turn the handles. I will definitely have to make a bird's-mouth jig like you showed. Great idea to cut mortise while stock is still square. It is easy to blow out ends if you chisel out the mortise without the supporting wood.
Building coping or turning saws is pleasant project to undertake even if you never use them. I have 6 or 7. A kit? never Just look at the parts and fire up your wood lathe to make the handles which by itself is fun to do
Nice job, thanks for sharing. Definitely a must have for quality trim work. Keep up the great work as the goal is for us to continue to inspire others to build something awesome! 👍🏼
wow they look amazing and seem to work very well I am new to coping saws, but by the luck of the fool, I bought my coping saw blades in form of the round steel strings with the synthetic "diamond" particles stuck on it's surface. that allows me to make the cuts in any direction, change the angle, cut curves and you name it. I wonder if the cutter string holders / clamps are available, if not, you can buy the few dollars coping saw with such clamps, take them out, and put into your wooden coping saw frame. these cutter strings with "diamond" on it are sold by feet on spools. they are very cheap. so there will be no teeth / no pull or push cutting direction. the cutting "diamond" string cuts both on push AND pull. well done!
Just finished mine. Really like it. I'm assuming since you didn't say anything about glue that the tenons are just friction fit so the tightening and loosening will work...so no glue. Right?
Thank you very much for share this information Katz I was searching some coping saws but is really hard to find here in Mexico now I think I can do with this information, thank you again and have a great day. Regards Oscar Flores
5:37 He said Doo Doo. 🤭😆 I trust you are well. Have a great day in SJ. Great content btw, and whoever is shooting and editing material, give 'em a big thumbs up from me. Great job.
Does it work better with more or less string? I made one, but I’m having a little trouble with the strings breaking. Might need to change the type of string I’m using
Fantastic, Jonathan! Thanks for the templates and all the tips! 😃 As soon as I can I'm going to give it a try! Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thank you Jonathan, really enjoyed it. Can one get some blades that fit into the thin kerf of a dozuki dovetail saw? My coping saw blades and Olsen scroll saw blades are way too thick...
Hallo Jonathan. Grosse Idee mit kleiner Säge. Muss ich mir auch bauen. Big idea with a smal saw. I also have to build myself. Greetings from germany. Dirk
Is anyone else having problems with the templates falling apart when trying to remove them from the double sided tape? Also, I already screwed the first template up b/c my flush trim bit shifted - that's on me - shouldn't have started with my favorite profile of the three. Arrrgh, I thought this would be easier! Keep up the good work, you make it look too easy!
I'm building one for myself, and I'm suggesting it to my scouts for their Woodworking merit badge. What's better than an early project that you can use from your teen years for the rest of your life?
Excellent video, thanks Jonathan. Just ordered 2 kits and blades form Taylor Tools. They will make a perfect staycation project to do with my son (17 yo). I finally bit the bullet and picked up the Astra Coated Ultimate Flush Trim from Bits and Bits (thanks for the 15% off code!) but I think for this project, maybe we'll stay low teck and do it with the bandsaw, rasp and good old sanding. Question... do you think that woods like Bubinga or Purpleheart are too open grained for this project? I'd hate to go to the work and then have it split or break. If you think they aren't suited, I have a little Jatoba as well as Hickory and Maple. Love your content, keep up the great work!
@@katzmosestools Thanks for the speedy response. Either way, I can see mixing it up a bit with some Maple for either the stretcher or toggle, the contrast would be really sweet looking with the alternating light, dark, light, dark, light. Have an awesome rest of your Sunday!
Thanks Jonathan! I’m going to have to get the kit. Right now the router table is out of commission. Would it be possible to flush-trim this with a trim router? I have both a Dewalt plug-in and a Milwaukee battery trim router (don’t ask…I have a tool addiction). I’d love to make a few of these for sale at craft fairs, and as projects to teach spokeshave technique to others. I’ll be making a few bird-mouth jigs as well. Great stuff as always, Jonathan!
Why does it matter if the birdsmouth is tall to add the 90° support? Wouldn’t that be determined by how long horizontal piece is? That leverage will be the same no matter how long the vertical piece is.
That spokeshave is the Veritas spokeshave. You can turn that front piece upside down and then you have a rounded spokeshave. Your welcome! Just in case I'm mistaken please disregard this comment ;)
I noticed that you tied the string with a granny knot. A granny knot is significantly less secure that a square knot, which is what should be used in this application. Even better, a blood knot, AKA barrel knot, would probably be the optimal knot for this.

Question I’m in the market for a drum sander do you use yours ? Do you find it worth having ?
This sweet project helps me cope with lumber prices. That’s right, punny.
Hahaha

It looks much better aesthetically. Kinda gives the old school wood worker vibe. Beautiful work
Gonna have to try this out today, thanks!

Can not seem to find coping saw plans. I have all the parts from your shop. Love your videos.

Nice idea to make a coping saw out of a frame saw design.
Now I'm going to want a fret saw, too.
Great looking project. Good to know that I'm not the only one that finds the performance lacking in the cheap coping saws. I found this with hacksaws too - the high tension frames are the only way to get a straight cut reliably.
I just made one of these up last weekend from ash. Looks and works great.

How COOL IS THAT! Nice work!
Thanks brother!
Templates and kits ordered today, i can wait to have a go at making these!!
Really great Jonathan. 👍🏻 Would you recommend removing the tension from the saw before storage?
Killer job, Jonathan! This video was sweet!
I love 'em, love 'em, love 'em! Gonna build one, build one, build one!
Just finished mine and love it! Really fun little project! Thanks for the video!
Congratulations always innovating good friend Katz-Moses!!!
That dark wood is beautiful. I love dark woods.
I'm not into woodwork but amazed by it and this is beautiful!
Looks aweersome! Reminds me of the old timer bush saws.
Thanks for demonstrating the frame saw's advantage over cheap coping saws. A taut blade cuts easier.

I've been really enjoying using my big frame saw recently. This will be a great addition to my workshop!
Woowww real idea 😍😍😍
Such an easy and cheap idea! I stopped using mine because it has such a hard time cutting. Trying this
Awesome little tool, will be using the CNC for the parts.
Nice build and must have for any woodworker. I will be ordering my kit this week!

Nice 👍 I think I have to look into my scrapwood box, find some pieces and start build such a coping saw. Cheers

Just what I am looking for. Thx. I would suggest Osage Orange for the arms as it very “springy”.
😊😊👍👍
Super cool project!!
Very nice, I ordered and received the your template kit but can not locate the free plans that you mentioned. Please advise.
Found it!
Brought your apron dude its the bomb going to get another another one
Glad to see you supporting those with little wood 🤣
Good morning!
Jonathan did you find that one wood was better than another? I think you mentioned that you would let us know. Thank you sir.
Great content and saving me money! Lovin it man, thanks
Vraiment magnifique travail 10/10

Well darn. I JUST bought the Knew Concepts saw.
Thanks Jonathan, I loved this video and cannot wait to add this project to my build list.

My coping saw is a 4” angle grinder . Don’t leave home without it . I will be home on the couch with a beer by the time your coping trim
When you’re done, cut out the waste from dovetails with that same grinder. Obviously, there’s many uses for a coping saw.
You're the best!
Always wanted to own one..I guess I can make one now..thanks man, great video…
Been using my Spear & Jackson Eclipse coping saw for 20 years it only cost me 20 bucks st Angelo's electric 👊
Wow, Jonathan stellar build.
I ordered the kit and trying this. No scroll or band saw. Just a jig saw, drill press with a drum sander and a dremel.
Hallo Jonathan. Grosse Idee mit kleiner Säge. Muss ich mir auch bauen.

Can you use loose tenons in this?

What about the wire saw blades. Would they work ??
Are the plans still available mr Moses

Where do I get the paper plans to make the templates for the coping saw?
Check out the pinned comment or description
This is awesome! Thanks
thank you Katz
Do you know what size your Hamilton khaki field watch is? Love the woodworking but I’m currently saving for that same watch

If you setup good work holding no problem
Nice idea!...
... I just think about building such a saw out of two halves of a coat hanger ...
What size blade do i need. I bought the kit but it didn’t come with any blades.
You need to change the selector on the website. I'd email Taytools if you can't find it. Also link is in pinned comment

I have nothing to say really, but I appreciate your content, and wish to help with the yt-algorithms
"If you want to go the flush-trim route" badumpbump
🤣🤣
Thank you!
I cannot find the plans for the coping saw. I bought the templates and the hardware kit and I didnt know if the plans came with it.
they're on the taytools website
1:38, a little tension closing the cut there!
You can set in PDF to default the print size to "actual size".
I dont have time to make one where can i buy one of these saws
What's the difference between a coping saw and a turning saw? Is it just size?
Turning saw = fret saw. Fret saws' blade does not rotate and it has a much deep back.
You didn’t say specifically, but I’m guessing neither the rosewood nor the wedge seemed like they were going to break or crack from the strain?
They were all super strong
@@katzmosestools Thanks 👍
Will it help me deal with my in-laws?
i wonder if mesquite, would work for these kind of projects. I have had day dreams for making hand-planes and tool handles out of mesquite.
What's the Janka on mesquite?
@@katzmosestools according to Google it's 2345. It is a hard wood for sure.
Anyone else catch “sorry crips” next to Blood?! 😂

"dodo" @5:37 🤣
😂😂
You can use a coping saw too.

cool
Yes, first one
That wire on the left at the beginning kind of looks like a pube….made me want to brush it away!!

You see the difference between Rex Krueger and Moses is: Rex is a comedian and I bought the apron.
