This press has worked like a charm for my projects ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxajoEbapTfqWaadnqb04h6U576yxXp-FE . I didn't even secure it to my table top, mainly due to the fact that I was using a 15 lbs drill vise. It's not flimsy at all as to what others have claimed it to be. Make sure the locking nuts and levers are secured and there won't be any issues with light pressure and patience. I was able to drill through aluminum, plastic, and steel (steel took a while) with no problems at all. Yeah it took a little longer than a regular drill press, but I don't have the space OR the money for one.The instruction manual was worthless, but luckily assembling the press was intuitive. However, the manual would be good for ordering replacement parts if needed. There is a nice breakdown of the parts that are included in the kit. Before ordering, make sure it is compatible with your unit, it is clearly stated what models the press is compatible with. This was an excellent purchase for $40!!
I still have my dad’s homemade vice he built as an apprentice 60 years ago. I’ve restored it twice. It’s still solid no matter how much pounding it’s been through. It has minor shortcomings but I’d never part with it.
@J.C. Kohle its been three years and he is still using it in his videos. In two years it will look and work just as fine. Hating on others doesnt make your sad and lonely life better. So shut the fuck up and get something done by yourself you sad little wanker
The weakest point is the joint between the channel section and the moving jaw. All the rest is super overkill to match that but the excessively heavy construction gives it enough mass to be an effective anvil. An I beam or channel on its side would have been better but the channel is pretty frickin stiff as is. obviously a solid piece of metal would be more bomb proof, but it would literally take a bomb to damage that thing. So no, it's not an "extremely weak design". It's a good design. Dick.
Cool. Not only is the build cool, but the added part at the end of the guy sitting on the bar is really cool as well. I wasn't sure it was going to do its job well until I saw that.
For all the welding and grinding, that thing probably has very little strength s the lower beam(channel iron), has it'strength in the other direction. A few good loads against the top of the jaws and that channel will bend.
100% He is a Very good fabricator but taught himself i would say . Also vertical down and dragging the mig on something that is meant to be strong is a No No.
vice versa? A vise grips things. vice is a crime of moral turpitude like prostitution, gambling etc... Unless I suppose you're going to gamble on a cheap vise like I did! B-)
You can tighten the adjusting nut inside the headstock to keep that chuck from moving back and forth on you. Remove the top cover on the headstock. Look for wo "N" nuts on the spindle shaft. One is used as a lock nut for the other. Loosen the lock nut and tighten the other to take the slop out of that tapered roller bearing (It's the bearing closest to the chuck). That way you can maintain flatness facing off your workpieces and thread stubby short stuff without center drilling short work and pushing against the workpiece with the tailstock for your threads to line up. It'll help with chatter too.Good video and keep up the good work!
I bow 🙇🏻 down to your mad skills! I don't have enough experience to trust your vice on such a small bass.....but, you're sitting on a fulcrum locked in the vice on that base!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Is anyone going to mention the fact that it was welded down hill? I work heavy industry and have always been taught up will keep your weld zone clean and preheat it. Food for thought. I do like the design. Wish I had the mill. 👍🏻
The way you put the channel made the vice very susceptible to bending compared to if you had put a piece of rectangular tube. With longer side being vertical. Much higher moment of interia.
Epic work -well done! I would just add a short length of rubber tube inside the end pieces of the bar, so if it drops down it won't mince the web of skin between your thumb and forefinger!

this thing is like a tank! How did you cut the female threads, on lathe or ready piece? A file test on hardened jaws would be awesome. Thanks for sharing.
I think he made it on the lathe because the thread was wet from oil and it had sharp edges, also the outside surface didn't quite look like it was a ready piece from a store

Are you transferring the full clamping load using this puny bearing at 2:20 ? I doubt this will last long. Just compare the surface area your threads use to spread the load versus the small 20 contact points of the ball bearings. Way out of proportion.
You are correct, clamping load is transferred to those bearings, I bet when that vise is clamped tight, the force put on those bearings will be 10x+ what they are rated for, let alone any amount of flex in that jaw will transfer the load to mainly the top few balls. definite failure point.
That demo on the end.... dayum boy, this thing is strong! Awesome work, as always. I was missing the john deere green spray. also, the number u put is the number of the project?

Love the vise. It's extreme and should never break or wear out. Great Job and thanks for the video.
Cool vise, but under heavy load I'd expect this to fail due to poor weld penetration or bind from excessive deflection in the channel.
GentleBalls how much load do you think you would be able to get by hand? I doubt anyone would ever put enough ass into that to break it
