    This press has worked like a charm for my projects ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxajoEbapTfqWaadnqb04h6U576yxXp-FE . I didn't even secure it to my table top, mainly due to the fact that I was using a 15 lbs drill vise. It's not flimsy at all as to what others have claimed it to be. Make sure the locking nuts and levers are secured and there won't be any issues with light pressure and patience. I was able to drill through aluminum, plastic, and steel (steel took a while) with no problems at all. Yeah it took a little longer than a regular drill press, but I don't have the space OR the money for one.The instruction manual was worthless, but luckily assembling the press was intuitive. However, the manual would be good for ordering replacement parts if needed. There is a nice breakdown of the parts that are included in the kit. Before ordering, make sure it is compatible with your unit, it is clearly stated what models the press is compatible with.This was an excellent purchase for $40!!

    • @apexmike849
      @apexmike849 7 років тому +6

      It's actually only as strong as those edge welds - agreed. It's strong, but not as strong as it would be if it had been cast and machined.

    • @pstrap1311
      @pstrap1311 7 років тому +6

      The weakest point is the joint between the channel section and the moving jaw. All the rest is super overkill to match that but the excessively heavy construction gives it enough mass to be an effective anvil. An I beam or channel on its side would have been better but the channel is pretty frickin stiff as is. obviously a solid piece of metal would be more bomb proof, but it would literally take a bomb to damage that thing. So no, it's not an "extremely weak design". It's a good design. Dick.

    You can tighten the adjusting nut inside the headstock to keep that chuck from moving back and forth on you. Remove the top cover on the headstock. Look for wo "N" nuts on the spindle shaft. One is used as a lock nut for the other. Loosen the lock nut and tighten the other to take the slop out of that tapered roller bearing (It's the bearing closest to the chuck). That way you can maintain flatness facing off your workpieces and thread stubby short stuff without center drilling short work and pushing against the workpiece with the tailstock for your threads to line up. It'll help with chatter too.Good video and keep up the good work!

    Are you transferring the full clamping load using this puny bearing at 2:20 ? I doubt this

    Just compare the surface area your threads use to spread the load versus the small 20 contact points of the ball bearings. Way out of proportion.

    • @jamesolivier3192
      @jamesolivier3192 7 років тому +3

      You are correct, clamping load is transferred to those bearings, I bet when that vise is clamped tight, the force put on those bearings will be 10x+ what they are rated for, let alone any amount of flex in that jaw will transfer the load to mainly the top few balls. definite failure point.

    Not to be an ass, but this is an extremely weak design, your clamping strength is severely hindered.
    Look at a vise that an engineer has designed. 2:30 That channel steel should be welded standing on end with another piece adjacent to it (to form a tube). You have no more clamping strength than a medium size harbor freight vise.
    P.S. I've broken quite a few vises, I'm well aware of where their weakness is, and it's almost always in the guide area.

    Хорошие тиски, но много металла пошло на изготовление, если это просто металлолом, отходы были то себя оправдывает.
    з.ы. Что ж вы в мастерской закалку начали делать, весь пол в масле, песком надо засыпать ;)

    кроме плоскоого ничего не зажмут...ну например трубу или шпильку на которой гайка заржавела...не знаю что ими...зажимать соски в тиски??Губки(а точне-емегагубищщи) без насечек..сделано для видео.Мастерство-бесспорно,практичность стремится к нулю.

    Awesome vise. You've impressed the h*** out of me. You made it out of sweat and scrap, I hate to think what a vise like that would cost in the retail market, plus it's all steel and not questionable cast iron. Kudos to you.

    More mass than most anvils whilst maintaining its beauty takes some doing. For me the jaws are the best part, easily replaced and adjustable and I think you’ve outdone Fireball Tools which is hell of an accolade.
