  • How Julius Erving Became The Legendary “Doctor J”
Julius’s childhood nickname (“the doctor”) was supposed to be an inside joke.
Even when he was a college star nearly everyone called by his full name.
But then in 1971 everything changed.
That summer, Julius Erving showed up at the Rucker pro league.
No one could believe what they saw from the 6’6 small forward.
A guy with a 41 inch vertical who flew through the air like an acrobat and scored with ease.
The announcers threw out a bunch of nicknames to describe his talent.
Calling Julius “Black Moses”, “Little Hawk” and “The Claw”
    Julius had enough.

The “Little Hawk” moniker was a reference to Connie Hawkins (“The Hawk”) who used to do the same kind of high-flying acrobatic shots & dunks at the Rucker years before Dr. J did.

Forget mj, forget, lebron, forget kobe. Dr. Julius Irving started all of the dunking and all the acrobatics in basketball. He changed the game, and paved the way for those other players I mentioned!!!

That so-called 41 inch vertical throw it out the window I saw this man personally look down on the rim with dunks especially that one over Lonnie Shelton. On a lot of his dunks I saw him looking down in the rim. He was a meanie 45 or 46 maybe even 47 inches off the ground

Remember though, that in a game, he was usually gathering steam on his way to the hoop. So, he could get extra ups beyond simply his vertical jump.

It's always strange being there and then hearing some boy who wasn't even born yet reading some information from a computer about the Doc. ..not genuine

The NBA didn't see the real Dr.J because The 76ers convinced him to become a team player. So he toned his game down.

luckily there are some aba highlights, julius had skills that no one had ever seen before, he was on a different level than anyone else, probably more than any player ever, mj and wilt are in that category.

AND he was the originator of the term "POSTERIZED" due to how many guys made the short end of a lot of his posters that hung in many bedroom back in the mid 70's into the 80's.
