- How Julius Erving Became The Legendary “Doctor J”
Julius’s childhood nickname (“the doctor”) was supposed to be an inside joke.
Even when he was a college star nearly everyone called by his full name.
But then in 1971 everything changed.
That summer, Julius Erving showed up at the Rucker pro league.
No one could believe what they saw from the 6’6 small forward.
A guy with a 41 inch vertical who flew through the air like an acrobat and scored with ease.
The announcers threw out a bunch of nicknames to describe his talent.
Calling Julius “Black Moses”, “Little Hawk” and “The Claw”
Julius had enough.

My favorite player Julius Erving. My dad took me to see him play in the ABA growing up. GREAT MEMORIES WITH MY DAD🥲🙏🏿❤️
He changed dunking forever he left a huge mark on basketball
The “Little Hawk” moniker was a reference to Connie Hawkins (“The Hawk”) who used to do the same kind of high-flying acrobatic shots & dunks at the Rucker years before Dr. J did.
Connie Hawkins was never a high flyer he had huge hands and palmed the ball like doc they both had big hands Connie is also a forgotten legend but was nowhere near a leaper like julius
Style
Imagine if Doc had a phenomenal jump shot??? Scary....
His high teammate first gave him his name
The first air walker, no doubt one of the greatest
There was one just before him or right around the same time named Connie Hawkins.
Dr. J was Jordan before Jordan
Boricua Hispanic India n black iam.. is true the first n before of jordan , he fly n dunk n jordan want to be like doctor not like mike.😅
Forget mj, forget, lebron, forget kobe. Dr. Julius Irving started all of the dunking and all the acrobatics in basketball. He changed the game, and paved the way for those other players I mentioned!!!
Profound truth💯💯💯💯💯
Tt à fait juste et vrai.!
When they speak of the GOAT his name is never mentioned yet his impact is greater than theirs.
One of my favorite NBA players of all time!!!
The godfather of modern day basketball💯💯💪💪
The Klaw came nearly 40 years later
One of the Greatest Of All Times
That so-called 41 inch vertical throw it out the window I saw this man personally look down on the rim with dunks especially that one over Lonnie Shelton. On a lot of his dunks I saw him looking down in the rim. He was a meanie 45 or 46 maybe even 47 inches off the ground
Remember though, that in a game, he was usually gathering steam on his way to the hoop. So, he could get extra ups beyond simply his vertical jump.
No doubt one of the Best....
That dunk from dr. J is masterpiece
I second the motion.
Dr J was Kawhi before Kawhi.
And why this mans name so hard to spell. I google it everytime
That baseline move is soooo legendary
Le réel et véritable Goat...!!! Tt simplement parce qu'il s'est inspiré de personne, par contre les autres l'ont fait, surtout de lui...
My favorite player of all-time. 😂
It's always strange being there and then hearing some boy who wasn't even born yet reading some information from a computer about the Doc. ..not genuine
Must be. But if you're really Oscar Robertson, it really must be strange.
The NBA didn't see the real Dr.J because The 76ers convinced him to become a team player. So he toned his game down.
luckily there are some aba highlights, julius had skills that no one had ever seen before, he was on a different level than anyone else, probably more than any player ever, mj and wilt are in that category.
Top three best small forwards of all time
#1 in my eyes. 1974-1976 Dr. J could beat any SF.
Black Moses. Beautiful
AND he was the originator of the term "POSTERIZED" due to how many guys made the short end of a lot of his posters that hung in many bedroom back in the mid 70's into the 80's.
He's the one and only Dr.. Only TWO players have changed the game, 4-ever: Doctor J, and Air Jordan. And Dr. J was the originator.
There are plenty of players who changed the game. Don't be silly. Hell, Wilt changed 3 rules. Chuck changed 1.
This guy wants to inject himself into pop culture so bad 😅
The people gave him his name that’s why it’s still legendary
Cool
he would’ve definitely been called the claw he has big hands
Doctor is so unique. Anybody with big hands can get the same nickname. Nobody operates like The Doc.
Wasn't he a real academic doctor?
El padre de jordan
My favorite!!!❤
He saved the claw Nickname for Kawhi
What's funny is Kawhi likes it. It's part of his supervillain arc.
The Doctor
Lol, he never had about a 36 inch vertical.
Um what?
41"-42".
The DOCTOR!
The best of all the rest when it came to dunking a basketball 🏀.
He never dominated the NBA.
Yes he did, you sound like a young man who started watching basketball in the late 90s!!
@@kingstonban🤭🤣🤣🤣👍💯.
Hater👹
My hero
