The ABA had many great basketball players, who could live at the 3 point line in the NBA today. Louie Dampier put up numbers and statistics had held up well to Steven Curry. Yes Curry had a rival, shooting from 3 from 1967 to 1976. The merger with the ABA saved the NBA. Made the NBA much better. 1976 to Larry Bird and Magic Johnson was only 3 seasons.

I've been watching and playing basketball since the early 70's...Even to THIS day, if, let's say, I can only buy one ticket, with my last dollar, to watch ANY player thru out the history of basketball, and watch him play in their prime...it would be Dr.J...Not Wilt, not Jordan, not Magic, not Bird, not Lebron, not Kobe, not Curry, not Durant, not anyone else..but only Dr J.. I'm old enough to witness, to see ( tho not in person ) all the greats from the early 70's to this day...I"ve seen magic, bird, jordan and so on of their rookies days till they retired, but STILL, Dr J would be the one I'd spend my last dollar on to watch him play live...The man the player was truly special, and truly inspirational. And he has THEE most iconic moniker ( Dr J ) in all of sports, not just in basketball, imo..

I am with you on this one. I was that kid spending my last $ to see The Doctor's last game.

Whether it be Cooper Magic or Jamal, the Doc operated on both sides of the court, and as his skills diminished, , he adjusted his game to be more of a roll player , embracing "less is more" Excellent free throw shooter in the clutch . 1983 Chps, A key to any great Legendary player, making your Teammates better, and he did , on and off the court.

Amazingly, I got to see him play 3 times in the NBA, including a playoff game. Each game he did things that the english language is challenged for adjectives and adverbs to describe it. He took a shot to the head from Mike Bantam of the ABA/NBA Indiana Pacers. Instead of fighting, he scored the next 14 points in a row, and just punished Indiana. In that stretch he made a shot I still struggle to begin to describe it. For STREET BALL, he taught us that you don't fight a guy for a cheap shot or dirty play. You let your game punish the opponent. That is something I never forgot, for the game was more physical then, because of league rules. Let your game punish an opponent for a cheap shot, not your fists.

I grew up watching the Kentucky Colonels of the American Basketball Association. Dr. Julius Erving was a great basketball player, that you did not want to see play your home team. He could singlehandedly take over a game. He was at his very best in the ABA, and the ABA players seemed to dominate the NBA following the Merger. The numbers from the American Basketball Association should be included in the NBA record books, including the numbers for the 3 point shot, which existed the entire length of the existence of the ABA. Louie Dampier was a Stephen Curry class marksman, and so was Darrell Carrier. The ABA has stars who could live on the 3 point line in the NBA today. They were not shy about taking the 3 point shots.

@LaCream did you see Dr.J whole career? Did you? I saw his career live. Saw Irving from start. Kyrie and Dr.J can't be spoken in same breath Kyrie is light years better than him. Its not close. Look at Dr. J numbers. I was a fan of the doc but its laughable him being a greater player than Kyrie mother fucking Irving. You should go in corner ans sit down.

    Julius Erving was overrated.
Julius Erving isn't a doctor. He didn't go to medical school.
