But why would the NBA cancel their most popular show?

Shaq absolutely did not turn the show into "Must See TV". If anything he dumbed it way down while at the same time providing some comic relief, but only as Chuck's (completely unwitting) punching bag.
Ernie and Chuck have just been too good to let Shaq's narcissism and stupidity seriously impact the show.

Why not just have the show without the NBA footage - Just the guys talking... They are sometimes more interesting and thrilling than any NBA game nowadays.
Something like open court on TNT.
SometimesNBA games are so lame (due to the new rules), it doesn't even matter if they show a game or not. But people want to see THE GUYS talking Basketball! Guaranteed success even without the NBA footage.
The hosts are paid $20m a year to joke around and do very little, it's absurd and the video leaves that out. There are youtubers doing a better job getting paid peanuts compared to them. Most overpaid people in the history of television! Remember when people were outraged about the Friends cast getting $18m/year each? They got 30m people watching! Inside the NBA got 1m most of the time, and the vast majority of people were tuning in for the game, not the hosts.
@valleyshrew the problem is that you've made a false correlation where effort is supposed to equal value. If the show is entertaining then it doesn't matter how hard they work. Their pay is based ratings metrics not quantity of product. An UA-camr might work their behinds off but if that doesn't translate to views then it's pointless.

my wife who isn't a sports person. ask if she sees me watching basketball if its a tnt game, if I say yes she wants me to let her know when the pre game, halftime and post game comes on so she can watch ernie and the guys.

Amazon outright buying Inside actually has some insane value proposition. Whenever ESPN is broadcasting games, I turn them off at half time because their halftime coverage is so bad. SAS and Perk are terrible analysts. The Inside guys are experts and make the NBA fun.
Inside is fun, because TnT allow them to be themselves. Amazon will not allow them to

NBA viewership is down and has been going down. I dont know how all these companies are paying so much for the rights. Cable is also down. I love Inside the NBA, but i dont understand how TNT can be profitable enough to pay the price of the rights.
TV viewership, yeah. The NBA has a much younger fanbase than football or baseball and the kids stream stuff they don't watch TV.

Essentially the Turner NBA brand has no money after the new parent company decided to sink into seemingly endless debt.
pretty much every fan outside the US watches on ESPN through cable, or NBA league pass these days. i've been a Celtics fan since 1980, first through games recorded on VHS and mailed by a mate from NYC to London, UK. then through ESPN on cable, and for the past decade on league pass. streaming help expand access to NBA games massively, so much so there are more non-US fans, than the entire US market, and we don't have to wait until a game ends because ABC or whoever has dibs on the game; the international league pass has no blackout restrictions.

One thing very common is to make a deal with the original buyers so they can air some games of that package and they don't need to pay so much.

Inside sometimes gets more views than the games it analyzes and is clearly the most entertaining sports show on tv, UA-cam and everywhere else.

They need each other. NBA is so unwatchable and NBA on TNT makes it very bearable
The reason is because the NBA on TNT is critical of the product, not just the players. Inside the NBA's competitors don't actually rip on players and the product, they just waffle around the celeb culture and maybe one or two outrage takes, but when Barkley and Shaq talk, the players' and the league's feelings get hurt because of the authority they both have as former players of the game.
Outdated info: Charles Barkley will not retire and instead remain with TNT Sports even after it loses the NBA following this upcoming season, TNT announced Tuesday. Barkley will continue on his 10-year, $210 million contract.
The NBA didn't abandon its number 1 TV show. The network hosting the show didn't believe the NBA was worth the money it was asking. The NBA then got even more money than that, and TNT can't afford to match. Trying to take amazons small package isn't a viable option. Such is life.
11:40 I disagree with that statement, if Inside the NBA is over, NBA will lose alot of fans. NBA has been very hard to watch in recent years, players are soft and lack of desire to compete, the all star game is a good indicator that players just want to chill and relax. Only a few players would try and play hard these days, which I cant blame them, they are in their 20s, n already have generational wealth. The only reason I keep up with NBA is cuz of inside the NBA, not saying everyone is, but quite a lot of people are. So, Im keen to see how NBA goes moving forward.
I guess it's better that it ends instead of bringing in a new lineup that sucks. Amazon still sucks for this though but they're not alone trying to watch sports on streaming is expensive as hell even UA-cam is in on it.
every good thing has to end at some point. sadly we are at that point with a legendary show and cast. we were lucky to have watched it while we did and will have memories to tell grandkids.

Inside the NBA Barkley=comedy. We lost a gem. But eventually he would leave anyway cause of age but could have had a few more seasons on him before he checked out.

Hope amazon dont try to remake Inside the NBA. What the remake of Top Gear as the Grand Tour is so bad. After being able to rewatch 20+ season Top Gear, i can barely make it through one of the Grand Tour. It’s so water down, not funny, and not engaging.

My one critique, unless I missed something, Charles has said they’re bringing back the show in some form. I saw rumors that there was also infighting, but I didn’t hear mention of the many instances Charles said the show would continue in some form.
From my research - it's definitely possible but not super likely
Barkley said they could keep the show going under with Amazon but they would have to keep the entire TNT studio team. Also, apparently Ernie won't leave Atlanta regardless of any payday with AMZ. But theoretically Chuck, Ernie, Shaq and Kenny could open their own "studio" hire the exact same staff, sell the rights to AMZ (who would be dumb not to accept) and keep the show going for a few years. But they are also getting to retirement age so this might just be the writing on the wall
