  • A playthrough of The Software Toolworks' 1993 edutainment game for the Super NES, Mario is Missing!
Mario is Missing! was one of several officially licensed Mario games from the early 90s that were produced by companies other than Nintendo, and it was one of the best ones.
Created by The Software Toolworks, a development and publishing house known for things like Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing and the Miracle Piano Teaching System, Mario is Missing! is an educational game that has been superficially disguised as a Super Mario World-style platformer.
Mario is Missing! starts with Mario being captured at Bowser's fortress in Antarctica. Bowser has his koopalings out stealing priceless relics as part of some convoluted plot to melt the polar ice caps, and with Mario out of commission, Luigi steps in to save his brother and the Earth in his first ever starring role!
Luigi has to explore fifteen major cities, all accessible through doors in Bowser's castle. Each of the cities has had three items of cultural significance stolen, and these items are all being held by the Koopa Troopas wandering about. You have to stomp them, steal back the goods, and then gather information on those items by questioning the local people. Once you have your facts straight, you can return the items to their proper places after answering questions to prove their authenticity. Finally, once you've figured out where you are in the world, you can summon Yoshi and warp back to Boswer's castle to continue the quest.
It all feels a lot like Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? with its heavy emphasis on geography and history. The biggest difference is that Mario is Missing! trades the menu-centered interactions of Carmen Sandiego with a system that better resembles an action game that kids on their own might choose to play. If you want your dog to take his medicine, you just stick the pill in peanut butter and mission accomplished, right? Well, if you'd like a disinclined child to learn something, disguise it as a video game and you'll see the same magic at work. Psychology is a wonder like that.
I was about ten when we rented Mario is Missing! as a new release, and I found it pretty easy. I tore through it in a single weekend, but I distinctly remember having a lot of fun with it. The graphics and sound were neat (I loved the parade of Mario theme remixes!) and there are a number of random facts that it taught me that I can still remember to this day.
(But why do half the buildings in Tokyo feature giant signs that read "Toyota" in katakana? Hahaha!)
It's not a traditional Mario game, but it is a neat and effective teaching tool that doesn't pander to nor patronize the children it was made for, well presented in a surprisingly palatable Mario theme. If you happen to have an elementary schooler in your house that likes old video games, give them a copy of Mario is Missing! There's a good chance that they'll enjoy it, and that they'll learn something in the process.

This one really takes me back. I remember I was confused as a kid trying to figure out how to play it because the kids that owned this game didn't know either. When Nintendo started talking about _Luigi's Mansion_ being the first game starring Luigi, I immediately remembered this title and begged to differ!

Brazil, 1997. I was 12 and trying to figure out what to do in order to complete this game despite not being able to speak or read a word in English. I really wanted to play it - after all, I had spent all the little money I had renting the bloody game. I wanted to make the most out of what seemed to be a total bummer to come. So, I ploughed through the game using a 1960s English-Portuguese dictionary. I can't really recall whether I ever got to the end of the game or not. However, I have vivid memories of that ever-growing excitment as I was piecing things together. But I don't mean the game. I mean the language! Satisfaction came from my making sense of the English language! Of course it took me way longer than a single weekend playing Mario's Missing until I acquired a minimally decent level of proficiency, but it all started there. Being able to speak English allowed me to live through experiences in differente countries with differente people on both professional and personal levels. So, to a certain degree, it's thanks to those who took the time to put this game together that I am what I am. Not in a million years would I have ever thought that a far from promising weekend playing a far from popular game would prompt me, more than a decade later, to set off on the journey that would bring me closer to fulfilling some of my dreams! I take the risk of sounding as cheesy as one can, but I'll say it: Embrace the dull moments in life! They might yield surprising results.
    Thank you software Toolworks!

This game is OBJECTIVELY the best game ever.
It marked a before and after in the history of the video game. Both its mechanics, gameplay, game design, controls, story, graphics, bosses, cinematics, multiplayer, online mode, everything, were revolutionary for the industry.
In an interview, Hideo Kojima stated that Mario Is Missing was his greatest inspiration to become a developer, and it is no wonder, since the influence of this title on Metal Gear is clearly noticeable.
When I finished the game I burst into tears, the best experience of my life, I replay it about 15 times a month.

Without a doubt a very interesting game to play from beginning to end to this day. Its worth noting that the company responsible for making Mario is Missing got rebranded into Mindscape which eventually dissolved around 2011. Its a good thing Luigi got his chance to shine in order to save Mario before Luigi's Mansion came to being.

I finally understand after all these years that the reason I never got off the first stage was because I couldn't read at the time and my tiny mind couldn't pair the curvy map and sidescroller overworld 🤣... good to know since this almost unheard of game has remained on my mind until now. Good to know why my pride was hurt before "getting out of the tutorial" 😉

      NEGATIVES
      • *The Music* (It's just sounds like total crap. I didn't think anyone could butcher music from Super Mario World, but The Software Toolworks managed to do so.)
      • *Bowser's sprite looks pretty bad*
      • *Stiff Character Animation*
      • *BORING GAMEPLAY* (The biggest flaw. Nothing changes at all! It's the same dull and repetitive slog!)

For an educational game about history and geography it sure contains a ton of spelling errors and historical inaccuracies. The Super Mario Wiki has the complete list of them.
Hoping someday someone can make a rom hack that fixes the errors. Same for Mario's Time Machine which has the same exact problem.
The fact that these games both heavily borrow assets from Super Mario World and were quickly churned out by the same exact company in 1993 explains it all.

    • @X2011racer
      @X2011racer 5 місяців тому

If only we knew how, so we could fix the inaccuracies and do the following:
      1. Rework the NPCs to be more Mario-like, as they are taken straight from the DOS version.
      2. Shorten the cooldown time of the Tourist Attraction stations after failing their exams.
      3. Give Luigi either his SMAS+SMW or SMA2 sprites.
      4. Redraw the unique Yoshi away and towards sprites to be more in model of his SMW sprites, and make his arms more consistent; They're orange in his recycled sprites, but green in his new sprites exclusive to this game.
      5. Redraw Luigi in the Album screens to be more in line with his official artwork during the SNES Era.
      6. Add the Mario hints from the DOS CD version of the game, and change London's background so that it isn't a copy-paste of Moscow.

We almost rioted at funcoland when this game debuted. The kids at funcoland and the funcoland employees were collectively losing their minds how bad that game was. They had a live demo setup, we were hoping it to be similar to the original Super Mario, but instead saving Mario instead of the princess. Should have been a slam dunk from the brains at nintendo. Oh man we were so angry and dissapointed. I'll never forget it.

Things to note for the graphics:
    1. Mario's signature move, the jump, is UNUSED.
    2. Yoshi looks weird when he faces forward, especially his face o_O
    3. Yoshi uses weird palettes.
    Things to note on gameplay:
I used to play this back when I was in middle school. I started searching for Mario, but I JUST COULD NOT FIND OUT HOW TO PLAY THE DARN GAME.

Not only does Luigi travel the world before Mario but he makes serious bank while doing it too. Poor thing just can't catch a break nor get the respect he deserves. I guess Luigi must have had one hell of a gambling problem in the early 90's he seemed to have lost all that money he made on his world tour; Because it took until 2001 for him to get his lucky break ”he had to work his butt off to get his mansion but hey it's the journey not the destination right?”. Now he even has his own Trump Tower sized hotel. Granted he still had to work for that as well but hey Luigi's not afraid to get his hands dirty to get what he wants.
