  • Preparing your Classic Sports Performance or Super Car for Winter Storage.
    Over the winter months if you own a Sports, Classic, Performance or Super Car then the chances are you're not going to use it much. In this video I show you my method for performing basic checks, maintainance and ideas that I use when storing my 2007 Ferrari F430 over the winter.
    But don't think that this only applies to winter. You can use these tips to protect your car all year round and keep it in it's best condition when you're not using it.

    I have to give you respect. Cars engine bay is extremely clean. Love seeing any car that has been looked after correctly.

    Some great ideas in this video. I can’t believe you don’t have critters trying to get into your car. That is fortunate. Heidi

      Thanks! We just don't really have that problem here much, unless you live near to or on farm land where you can tend to get mice. BTW, the Carcoon is an inflatable cover that's a bit like a tent. They are normally clear, but I have an outdoor version, which is absolutely fantastic! Thanks for commenting, sorry for the late replies.

      Thanks for the support! The great thing is that these techniques can be used on any car, even if you're not storing it over winter, so it'll stay in the best condition. I'm working on a new vid at the moment :)

    Very useful, thank you ! I have the same specs but 2005, as I am in canada I can't drive it in the snowy winter - for how long do you suggest to run the engine from time to time ? or is it just fine to let it sleep for 6 months ? ;)

    Lots of people jump to conclusion that mayo on filler cap means head gasket failure. I'm sure about dry sump cars but actually a far more common cause of mayonnaise on the filler cap is a by product of lots of short trips where the engine doesn't get up to temp. My runner Peugeot had it after the previous owner used it as a shop car. I cleaned it off, changed the oil and gave it a good hoon (much as you can in a 206) and it never did it again.

    • @MySupercarLife
      @MySupercarLife  6 років тому +1

      I used to have an E46 BMW which used to have mayo on the filler cap too when the weather turned cold. I put it down to either a dodgy breather system or trapped moisture in the top of the rocker covers from the aluminium engine not getting to temperature on short runs which is similar to what you're saying. It's best to get it checked but you're right, people instantly think the engine is knackered when its not.
      On dry sump it'll do the same as the oil and water will mix in the collector reservoir on the top.

    Great tips! In addition I use fuel stabilizer in the fuel run engine for a good 10 min. next I put 4mil poly down on the floor then place 2x10 pine wood in front of all four tires then drive up on them, doing this stops electrolics and helps keep moisture coming up (mainly for inside garage storage onconcrete) but still would use the wood under the tires out side.

      Thanks for the suggestions some great info there! You could use those EVA foam floor mats otherwise, the type that interlock in to each other like a big jigsaw. That could possibly work too. I didn't use a fuel stabiliser as it's only for a couple of months, but any longer and I'd seriously consider it. Thanks for the comment.

    I never knew what silica gel was used for, I'm going to buy chemical guys VRP, I learnt about "frunk" and I like your matching outfit!

    • @MySupercarLife
      @MySupercarLife  7 років тому

      LOL, it absorbs moisture. You could save up those little packets you get with everything otherwise and put them in a bowl, that's the cheapskate way. The Chem Guys VRP is my new favourite thing. You only need a little bit but it works well and it's pretty cheap. I owe the Frunk to Salomondrin as we never knew what is was called. Even the guys at the Ferrari dealers didn't know! We used to call it the 'Front Bit', then when I was watching Salomondrin with the missus they called it a Frunk. We laughed our heads off and now we know what to call it! The outfit I'm fronting is Primarks best I'll have you know :)

    Easiest way to pass straps under a car that I've used for decades is simply to use a metal retractable tape measure, pass the tape measure under the car tie your strap to it and pull it back through 😊 you're welcome 😁

    What can you do about the condensation in the exhaust system? When I do start my car up in the winter I get a lot of water coming out of the tailpipe

    • @MySupercarLife
      @MySupercarLife  6 років тому +1

      The condensation is just caused by the temperature of the metals. I don't think there's anything that can be done about it. It doesn't cause a problem with stainless steel exhausts, but can rust through a mild steel exhaust.

    Is the first cover a satin cover made for indoors? Or is it and outdoor cover? Does it get wet when the top cover gets moisture on it?

    • @MySupercarLife
      @MySupercarLife  7 років тому

      Hi, Yes the first cover is an indoor dust type cover. The top cover is waterproof and breathable, so if any moisture gets underneath it wicks to the surface of the waterproof cover and evaporates. The only thing I recommend though is re-waterproofing or replacing to top cover every once in a while if it stops becoming waterproof, mine has just been replaced and lasted around 14-15 months and was re-waterproofed half way through.
      Hope this helps.

    Hi great video I would like to purchase the same breathable waterproof car cover where did you purchase it from.

    • @MySupercarLife
      @MySupercarLife  4 роки тому

      It was from Halfords, however I did upgrade to an outdoor Carcoon shortly after. It's far more expensive but kept the car in better condition as the breathable covers stop being waterproof after a while.

      I'm hoping very soon. I've been busy with work and fitting a new kitchen at home (wifes orders!) so I've had no water supply for a couple of weeks! Plus the weather has been bad, so I've not been motivated to do anything. I have ideas but need the time to do them. I'm hoping really soon, it's been way too long since I uploaded, I may have some edits on my computer from last year that I didn't finish so I'll see if I can make an upload. Sorry :)

    Wouldn’t starting the car trap moisture in the engine?

    • @MySupercarLife
      @MySupercarLife  4 роки тому

      Not really, you should run it to operating temperature, that way any moisture will evaporate with the heat. Hope this helps

    As your car is parked on brick paving which will flat spot your tyres, I use four pieces of light plywood big enough to catch the footprint of the tyres. Plywood being softer than brick will prevent them flat spotting.

    easier to by house with garage,thats wear i keep my porsche in winter

    • @MySupercarLife
      @MySupercarLife  6 років тому +1

      I do have a garage, but it's only a single car and down a narrow driveway. I couldn't get the car between the houses as I'd never get it back up the drive. Also it wouldn't fit in the garage as you can get it in, but you can't open the door to get out of the car, so I'd have to live in it LOL.
      I'm saving for a new house, but unfortunately they don't come cheap 😐

    That all looks great but if you can of afford a car like this why not store indoors? What about rodents?

    • @MySupercarLife
      @MySupercarLife  6 років тому

      Hi. We don't have a rodent problem over here so that's never an issue unless it's stored on a farm. I don't have any indoor storage and I only have a single car garage which the car won't fit in, and I'd struggle to even get the car between my house and my neighbours. Then it would just about go through the door but you'd have to push it in to the garage as you wouldn't be able to get out if you drove it in. Not worth the risk of damaging the car I'm afraid.
      I will be buying a house with a double garage in the next few years, just saving up for it, but many of these things still need to be done if a car is garaged.
      It's not a case of affording, it's just a case of practicality. I used to pay to store it at a specialists but then I couldn't use it when we had a mild winter, and I couldn't do any maintenance tasks either.
      I also looked at storage units, but I'm not paying £350 per month to store it in one for 6 months, plus I'd have to drain the fuel and oil which is not going to happen. I now have an outdoor Carcoon which is amazing as it's self heating and in someways better than a garage.
