  • I’ve got 99 problems but throwing a topwater on braid will never be one. In this video I share all the reasons why you should be throwing a topwater on braid. The new era is here and if your still throwing mono for topwaters your gonna get left behind.😂😂

    7 years ago I bought my first braid. It sucked back lash every other cast. I tried I almost gave up realized not all braid is equal. I watched your video on
    Your braid I've never looked back. Best braid hands down 30 pound sunline. I tried them all. Man I appreciate you.
    Thank you!

    “Things worked in the past so that’s how I’m going to do it now. New technology is evil” - R.B.
    Seriously, I agree with the video 99%. I have changed over to braid for all but two situations.
    A) I often throw a prop bait here in Florida and the braid gets tangled I. The front prop too easily.
    B) I am often throwing my topwater lures over hydrilla that is 6” below the surface. I find that the lure floats higher and gets snagged less often when I use mono.
    New to the channel. Loving it.

    Lil advice if you are dealing with trebles wrapping the braid. Put a handful of bobber stops before the knot. The hooks will typically slide off the stops without ruining your retrieve

      They do agree in the cost of equipment (boats, trucks, electronics) as well as hard it is to get started in today's tournament fishing arena. I only use braid on spinning reels and top waters, I still use mono when using shallow crank baits near cover the extra stretch helps to prevent snags, less likely to bury hooks in underwater cover.

      I love the casting with braid. If anything I’ll tie on floral carbon leader’s with an Alberto knot, Depending on the scenario. But if there’s one thing I can’t stand is that have straight fluorocarbon on my bait casters.

      @@12345B @The Third Perception at the end of the day mono isn't cheaper. With mono and fluro you have to change it out probably once a month or at the most every couple months if you don't fish much and I have used the same braid for over a year now. In the long run it lasts much longer and that saves you more money. Besides I can't tell you how many times I've lost fish on fluro, doesn't matter which brand. It seems like it gets brittle and breaks very easily and I absolutely hate mono. Possibly the worst thing you can use I think. To much stretch and almost zero sensitivity. I hate that. Crankbait legend David Fritts has videos on this. Check him out, it might make some sense to you.

    Great advise...i use braid on about all my setups unless its a jerk bait or something of the sort or super clear water...I like using braid to a short piece of mono for topwater just to eliminate the issue with trebles getting into the braid and gives a little on the hook set

    • @texoma_outdoors
      @texoma_outdoors 2 роки тому

      I know what you mean about the trebles. Rather than use a leader the solution I like is putting several bobber stops just in front of the knot. Pushed tight together they form a leader with the braid running through and keep the line away from the front treble. I've seen guys put super glue on the first 3/4 of an inch of line too for the same effect

    I'm all for braid on topwaters. (Sunline Xplasma is the best I've found hands down, but I always use at least an 8 carrier for topwaters, except for frogs in grass then 4 carrier to help cut through with a fish on). Once the braid has been broken in I start using a mono/copo (Sunline Machinegun Cast & Berkley Big Game are my favorites) leader on topwater, to keep the line from tangling in the front hook. The other 10% of the time I'm using exclusively Sunline Defier Armilo, it has almost no stretch and is really some amazing stuff.
    Edit: The Sunline Xplasma has to be the tightest weaved braid ever made. It doesn't absorb water like other braids, is smooth, last longer, keeps color, it's legit the best 8 carrier on the market. Past it Vicious no fade is 2nd, but xplasma is pretty far ahead.

    Thanks for the vid. You always have good content. I swapped over to 30 lb braid for all my topwaters, except my poppers. I will tie a 1 foot leader of 15 lb mono to the 30 lb braid because the poppers I throw walk really good and the front hook snags the braid without the leader. A short leader for me helps keep the knot out of the eyelets too. So far my spook type baits has not hung the braid but if it does, I will add the leader.

  • @markamerica1965

    I agree with you on the braid, but the smart phone not so much. I don't own a cell phone. Wouldn't. Ever. I have a landline everywhere I care to be reached. One of the worst things in the world is the capacity for tracking your movements. I know, I know, convenience blah blah blah. That convenience comes with a cost that's going to become more severe.

  • @fishingva9946

    I think the main thing you said is using a soft rod with braid. If you're using a more stiff rod your going to need a mono leader. If using a softer rod you can get away with straight braid. Unless you have those giant treble hooks when you can winch them in.

    I have to assume you are addressing long cast top water. I do use braid in this situation.
    But when I’m burning down a bank with quick 10-15yrd casts I’m still a fan of my medium moderate rod with mono.
    I totally get stripping off the mono on those distance setups.
    But A. upshawn turned me onto the lews SP reels. I bought one and it has been an eye opener. It’s an amazing reel. And considering I do more short distance casting than distance casting, I’m slowly changing 1/2 my reels over to the SP lews.

    What about a floating jerkbait, like a rogue? I've been throwing mine on 20 lb mono, but it's the yo zuri sensei, very small diameter, it's very strong, but has the diameter of like 12 lb line or something like that. I've never broke one off on it, but just wondering if you would fish braid on that bait. It might be one of the exceptions, because even with mono I get bent hooks, I change the hooks out on all of my rogues. Fishing it on a 6'10" All Star topwater rod. It has a soft tip on it.

I did try to go with Flurocarbon. This weekend up at a mountain lake And it felt so alien to me. So I ended up putting back on braid and then tying 20 to 30 foot of Flora carbon on each of my rods and that seem to fish a lot better for me. Do you see a reason why this would hinder anything or is it pretty common sensical And common for people to do that?

    As Todd recommended in the talk. He is always going to go. With a longer rod. If you can use a longer rod. On this subject of length. It's a thing. I've had some experience of.

    • @academicmailbox7798
      @academicmailbox7798 3 роки тому

      There is a lesson. To be learned here. And it brings in. The conversation about the length of rod to use. In relation to 'top water' fishing practice. And where I would. Locate this particular conversation. Is somewhere. Between the tutorial. By Randy Blaukat. On trolling motor management and skills. The use of the trolling motor. In order to end up. When it comes to the point. At which you are getting ready. To throw that perfect cast. At just the perfect place. On a shoreline. Or whatever it is. Using the trolling motor. To set yourself. Up for success (before you even throw your line and hook). Randy's most recent lesson. On that subject. I think. Is probably one of the most neglected aspects. Of all. In fishing. It's something that I've been hyper sensitive about. In relation. To my fishing. My entire life time. As we grew up. Doing things such as fishing top water dry flies. For species like brown trout. And we understood. It was a chess game. To maneuver oneself into a position. Kelly Galloup once described watching Rene Harroup in Montana I think. Or one of the best anglers. In that method. Who spent literally around a 'half hour'. Of time. To gradually wade his way. Up a river pool. Until he was feet away from a trout. One cast. On a dry fly. And the trout had taken it. Kelly had been sitting watching the whole thing. From bankside. And he said. It was like receiving. A master class. It stood out. Amongst all of the things. He had seen in a life time. Of seeing stuff. In fishing period (including watching Larry Nixon on television 'walking the dog').

    • @academicmailbox7798
      @academicmailbox7798 3 роки тому

      This was the kind of world. I grew up inside. Looking at these kinds of anglers. Who to be honest. Were different from the rest of us. We used look at them. Like Luke Skywalker would look at Obi Wan Kenobi. Making a space ship float around. In the air. Or something. They were doing something. Working on the top water. That no one else did (the rest of us fished what were known as 'wet flies'). Underneath. And even that. Was not easy. There is an art. To fishing baits and lures. At depth in the water too. These 'top water' guys though. Could fish at times of the year. When the rest of us. Were basically 'out of business'. And that is how. I ended up by accident. Spending a lot of time. Just watching. And learning (because there was nothing better to do). At those times. Were were officially. Laid up.

    • @academicmailbox7798
      @academicmailbox7798 3 роки тому

      To see a really good. Top water guy. Break a piece of water down (you think the fish have the odds all stacked in their favor). Until you see what one of these top water experts. Can really do. With a rod and line. That however. Was back in the eighties. And some of those guys. Had been born. Way back. As early as around 1900 some of them. They were still fishing. When I was growing up. One of them showed me a technique. For coaxing large migratory fish. Like Atlantic salmon. To take on top water. Which is a technique. That still accounts. For probably my best fish. Every single year. And I had recieved that lesson. From that angler. Way back in the late eighties. His technique. He had learned. Way back in the twenties and thirties. From guys. Who had come to Ireland. From the south of England. Who had been using it. In the 1870's and 1880's even. So yes. There's a long and distinguished history. To top water fishing. Across a lot of different species. Which is probably the reason that. When the 'internet' arrived finally. And one could see. Expert anglers fishing. I began to understand. How few of them. Considered their approach. To the fish. To be part of the 'value added'. In the whole fishing equation. Very much the opposite.

    • @academicmailbox7798
      @academicmailbox7798 3 роки тому

      Some of the worst offenders. Are the anglers. Who grew up in parts of western Canada. Who really do measure water conditions. In terms of cubic feet per second. And they always measure. Their cubic feet per second. In those parts of the world. In the thousands and millions. They have to. Because the changes. Can be considerable. Between different times. Of the year. In parts of eastern Canada then. I've watched them fish. And approach the water. In the same way. As they would. As if. They were standing and wading. In the same water. As they are used to. In western Canada (where the Pacific ocean deposits gallons and gallons of rainfall along that western coast). Which produces rivers. Such as the steelhead rivers there. And then I look at the kayak boat angling. In the bass fishing. Part of the sport. And you see a similar thing. It's all about 'covering' water. Casting long casts. Throwing the bait way out there. As one peddles. And you wonder. When you look at all of it. Is there any hope left. For the skills and practice. Where the angler. Has a look at what they are dealing with. To begin with. And thinks about the water. And then selects. An avenue of approach. And at the right time. Makes the right cast.

I’ve tried tying several different types of knots and still breaking. And I’m not saying every bite is a giant or anything either. Im using sun line 50lb straight no fluoro leader. Could it possibly be a bad spool of line I got? It was really pissing me off so I went back to 20-25 lb fluoro and I fish eastern Oklahoma Grand, Gibson , Tenkiller etc. Any ideas or suggestions?

All you have to do is put some in a zip lock and add a couple spoonfuls to the livewell. @walleyechannel 3 роки тому

    I’m in a unique situation to disagree. I am fishing for walleye on a topwater plug . Cadence and pitch is everything. Braid has a tendency to overwork the lure when you are working it. Use a stinger hook on the end and problem solved. I’m throwing a pencil popper on 10 lb mono and land some rather quality fish on it. UA-cam: walleye channel or topwater walleye.
