That hook bend comparison was money! Never-ever thought of it like that and now just seems no brainer. Appreciate your continued insight and expertise. Very excited for the next one!
The first video was 🔥🔥🔥🔥 this one will be a force to be reckoned with. Dropping nukes man dropping 💥💥💥. People watching listen to this best info on frog fishing. Been frogging for 9 years the last video the 3 things he mentions is all true. It's taken me years to have the confidence I have with a frog last summer I dedicated to frogging everyday went out and that's all I threw besides a 1 ,2 punch lure stick bait to throw if a bass missed my frog some days I was averaging 8 bass caught out of 10. I know this is long but once you get confidence with a frog a whole new door opens.Sorry for this being long like a sailors note saying goodbye. Todd you do an awesome job explaining things. Tightlines brotha.
So glad someone on youtube finally addressed this hook bending bs. I suck at frog fishing but I've always been sceptical about that. Not to mention the fact that more often than not you only get em with one hook, and with frog gear your just begging to straighten that already bent hook out.
Bro! I just woke my kid and wife up at 12:49 AM. Laughing my faaaacking ass off at that wasp attack cut. Dude....had me rolling. They walk in thinking im having a heart attack because im so red in the face.
Man this lil series is great,I have learned a ton about a frog, this next one should be good to,thanks for sharing this, and I agree 100 percent on bending the hooks, there's noway I would ever bend any hook out, that's crazy to me,lol
I agree with you on bending the hooks up or out. If you have to bring the hooks up or out on your frog then it's a poor design. I live in South Florida when the water's low certain times of the year and the Glades 30lb stringers are common in our weekend tournaments and local opens. I've weighed several 25 lb plus stringers and never had to bend the hooks out on my frogs, I've snapped a few frog rods though. When a 7-pound plus hits you at the very end of a long cast it happens. Most Lewis reels are 20lb drag or better and I have them all lockdown. I don't want them to have a chance,I can always get another rod. Todd I really like this series I like what you and Hallman are doing and Upshaw too keep up the good work guys I appreciate all of you.
Good stuff Todd, bending hooks weaken them, they also get tangled up in stems, slop, scum easier. When I was a younger man. my profession was glassblower. First guy bass fishing to have sst balls in glass tubes, stuffed in worms. I did just a little butt kicking with that. Rick Clunn and his brother Randy Fite, used them for a couple years before anyone else started making them. Now I put them in frogs, that little subtle noise will get me a few extras a day. Can you put a glass rattle in the Strike King frog, up his drain hole? Do they have a rattle built in?
Agreed on the "realistic color" bit. Usually, I can't see how it made any difference as to color because with most frogs/fish imitators (shoot, topwaters in general), the bottom side of the bait that faced the bass were all one damn color anyway. Glad to see this innovation. Normally, I absolutely hate click-bait style titles, but in this case dawg, you need to go back and re-title/add something like "When killer bees attack", or something. That was comedy gold. Especially with the splash at the end. IF the click bait style tag lines REALLY work (and, apparently most/many UA-camrs at least THINK they do, as so many add them. Even Mikey Ballz has gotten on that band wagon, sad to say, but I digress), I haven't seen any fishing video on UA-cam that it would be more appropriate for than this one. Hillarious and great B-roll. homie. As to the eternal "hook bending" debate, I think you made an excellent demonstration of why it is probably a bad idea to bend your hooks "UP", as shown in your illustration. Very convincing. My question would be, what about bending them "OUT" as in AWAY from the body of the frog, without bending them "UP"? It would SEEM to me that might have advantages as you get some separation (a few millimetres) from the barb and the body of the frog WITHOUT changing the plane of the bend between the shank and the barb. Also, what are your thoughts on the thickness/thinness of the plastic on the frog. The reason I bring it up is two fold. One, you mention about the overall compressibility of the frog and I would think the thicker it is, the less easy it is to compress. On the other hand, I realize there would be a point of diminishing returns if it got too thin. An example of this would be like on the Megabass Big Gabot Frog. It is TOO thin because you can't catch more than a few (or get a bad hang up) on it without the plastic tearing, which sucks because they're expensive. Two, I saw a video of Jacob Wheelers. The intent of Wheeler's video wasn't about frogs, intentionally. He just happened to be in a tackle store looking at another bait when he saw some frogs and started taking them out of the packages. He said he always does that to check to see if the plastic is thin enough and he also said that the density/"compressibility" of frogs even varies from the same manufacture, not just between different companies. What would be your thoughts on all of this? Again, another excellent installment of the series. Look forward to the next one. I really hope you continue this format with other baits/tackle/supplies/etc because its the best format I've seen out there.
In depth comment BIG C I like it. I don't really ever touch my frogs we built them that way so you'd never have to alter them. It's why we built over 10 prototypes until we got it right. We fish that frog in too many situations where I want it weedless. I wanted a frog that matched the hooks and if not we should have designed it different. We checked how soft they were and how thick the walls were, I think we hit every spot, its why they brought me on for that project. I'm with Wheeler you can usually tell right off the bat just by looks if the frog was built with those details in mind. The action is where its hard to see unless you throw it. After that it might take a year to see the durability of one. I'll let you in on "our" thoughts, guys around me and how we view baits and durability of baits. We understand that certain baits are gonna tear up. I've seen guys that complain about a crankbait catching over 100 fish and mad at the paint job or this or that. If a bait is "GOOD" and catches fish better than others in my job I want it and don't care how long they last. If a frog catches 15 fish and tears up but catches them better than everything else I'm buying it. 15 fish on average with some GIANTS and you win a tournament what's 8 dollars in the scheme of things. I know not everyone thinks like that but we do.
Thanks for helping us that don't frog a lot. I realize now hook sets have a lot more to do with it, the same as fishing a football jig deep. Have to look into that new Falcon, hoping it's lightweight. Seems a lighter rod helps a faster hook swing also.
Hey Todd. Great info. Sorry I am behind on videos. I have a frog question. A local Elite “Pro” talks about wrapping the hook shanks together with braid. Claiming “Flex”. I do not agree. With all the force generated from a hook set pulling forward braid will not have any affect.
It can’t fill up with water with the hole in the back. Every cast will shoot water out if it has any in it. You can literally fill it up and cast it and nothing will be in it. I’ve done videos on this.
I have to bend my hooks up on the frog I fish. But only slightly. Some of the frogs are stiff and I will boil them so they will collapse easier. I am going to try the popping perch. I know you catch a lot of fish on it.
Todd can you get the strike king folks to make those tail strands a little more durable. They start falling off from the get go and soon I only have a couple left on and it doesn't look right anymore.
With 40 to 65 pound braid on a 7-6 xheavy duckett I jerk 4 pounders out the water on a hook set. That’s what I have to use in the marsh so much vegetation we have to get them up.
Im a AVID frog 🐸 guy ...always have 2 setups on deck!!... i kinda get tired of people talking about “bad hook ups this n that” over years of frog fishing and knowing what to look for i can see when a bass gets my frog 🐸 then boom heavy stick and braid does its job BUT..what im trying to get to is...you can see when a bass rolls on your frog or blows up and knocked it out of the way and jus flat out misses the frog or they make that surge out at it and decommits “is what i call it” guys will set hook on all those scenarios and say “bad hook up ratio” or gotta “bend out hooks” thats really not the case!!! 💯✊🏽
I started bending my hooks up 1/16"-1/8" 5 years ago. Every year since I've been catching 5-6 times more bass than I caught before. I still use the same rod/reel/line combo for frog fishing. My friends started bending their hooks and they are catching more bass. I won't fish a frog without bending the hooks.
I'm die hard SK fan. Ive spent thousands of dollars on their products. In my opinion they're the best in the industry but the pad perch and the poppin perch are very hard to walk. I'm not the best at frog fishing but I have alot of experience with a frog it's one of my confident lures. I just can't get them to walk easy at all
Great video on another brand of frog to try out. However I would like someone in any of these videos tell me why a baitcaster combo is better then spinner combo or vice versa.
Its all about the rod, there is not a spinning rod out there made that is designed to be strong enough to set the hook. The spinning rods that are designed to fight giant fish are built for fighting the fish and the reel is designed for drag, the strength is all in the middle not in the tip. Frog rods with a bait caster are designed to set the hook when they eat and have no drag, almost the exact opposite of a spinning rod. Spinning rods are designed for drag and bait casters used for frog fishing aren't they have a good anti reverse to stop drag. Most spinning rods (offshore fishing) so we are talking about heavy spinning rods usually the fish are so big they set the hook when they run, bass you have to use all your power and none of the fish to set the hook. Thats the difference.
Thanks for the explanation. That is what I look for when seeing videos. An either or on rod combos. I only bank fish somintake that into consideration on what the narrative is. I also woud like that from the presenters too. Some talk about it but many don't unless it's a bank fishin video. Thank you again.
I actually have several rods for frogging,,,7’H,7’3”MH,7’5”MH & H and 7’6”H. Honestly ive got 8 frog rods,,,kinda extreme huh, nope. Ive got rods for pads, grass, open water, target casting, rods for Booyah only, pond frog rods,,im a frogger and I like frogging.Out of all my frog rods I mainly use the 7’H,7’5”H & MH and 7’3”MH. The great thing about living in Ga is I can almost frog year round,,if the sun is warm enough in Jan ill frog then. Ima try them up regardless.
@@rileymcgill9893 no,im thinking just right. The multiple rods give me options, multiple options. Little river? Got a frog rod for that,Big river? Got a rod for that. Clean water? Yep,got a frog rod for that. My grass lake??? Oh I got a few for that. Its not thinking to hard. Its a collection of rods and memories from over the years and tools to serve a purpose to make me more efficient when im out. Do I need them all? No,I only need the 7’H for frogging. Do I enjoy my collection of rods and use them as I see fit? Oh yeah. I recently added a 7’9”H to the list. Little bit to long but my Rodents dont care, they like it when I cut off Kermit and send them in on it. Multiple rods,Multiple options.
@@countryfriedfishing I couldn't read you're essay but if you're frog fishing you only need 2 rods max. But whatever makes you confident and catch fish. The rod doesn't teach you how to fish imo
@@rileymcgill9893 I can tell you cant read just by that statement man. Seriously though, dont tell people what they “need”. We all fish differently and have different needs. I use what I use because I have that option,im not limited to 1 or 2 rods,I get to choose how I want to fish and what combos I fish with, you obviously misread that part.
@@countryfriedfishing you a bad boy. Glad there's still some bad boys around speaking up for being bad boys. After not reading what you wrote I might have to get some leather, and spikes to really understand the concept behind being a bad boy. Let your freak flag fly you little butterfly
The water is usually clearer now so natural is better, any of the perch colors because thats the only reason they are up there, that and big gizzards. Pad fishing you can't go wrong with white or black. If you watch my next video about pads you'll understand why.
On your 🐸 video can you add ; soft body 🐸 reel and rod set. If possible tell us when would you use a soft body over a hollow body. Do you have three frog 🐸 set ups; soft body, hollow body and popping 🐸. Thanks for your efforts you are making other and me a better fishermen.
I have the Cara T7 Amistad and the tip is not right for frog placement... can't get an accurate at all. I use it for spinnerbaits at this point. Question for you. Is the New Cara XH tip softer for more precise placement ?
To each his own I’ve been using the cara “swimbait” rod which is now the cara 7’3 XH for over 7 years frog fishing it’s all I throw. I’m with Lews now and I’m working with them to build a rod more like it if that tells you how much I like it.Not sure how you skip a frog but it’s perfect for me.
@@toddcastledinefishing5924 I've always used Barracks rod, but that's a thing of the past now... just wondering if the tip on the Amistad XH is softer then the regular Amistad... Thanks
Softer than the amistad no. I don’t like a soft tip and the old cara amistad has to soft a tip for me. Try to get your hands on the xh and check it out
Hell ya on tryin to break your equipment. I have broke one rod setting the hook in past 4 years. Bedded 5 pounder in the center of a hay grass mat. Set up and sounded like a high power rifle went off.
Once you found the right set up you rarely break anything. I broke over 20 rods in 3 years trying to find the right rod. Lots of brands until I found the one I liked.
That hook bent out wouldn’t work on a worm bent like that or anything else but a frog but yeah I don’t know if it’s good or bad but all the frogs are that style now so yeah I figured that it was supposed to help bc my frog catch to strike ratio sucks unless it’s the Prop frog and that’s bc of the stinger hook so today it’s funny I found your vid bc at 4 am I got up and went to the lake before heading to the job and I took a Teckel frog and put that stinger hook from the Lunker hunt prop frog and put it on the Teckel but it didn’t work very good. But yes I tell everyone try to break your rod I say that every time haha unless it’s a Crankbait haha but I suck at frogs bc it’s hard for me to wait.
What happened to #3 ? How to work it. You often call this your open water frog. Can you expand on that ? What are you calling open water ? Grass edges vs.in the junk ? Never mind on the open water. Strike King writers conference 2 vids answered that
@@toddcastledinefishing5924 maybe it's the baits that I bought. But when I trying to press the water out of the bait, it just stayed compressed flat. I mean I loved the bait and it walked very well, it just wouldnt come back with air in the body is all.
I can see one maybe doing that because something is clogging the passage way. I've fished 300 of those things and thats the only thing it can be. If air comes out then it has to let it come back in, I'm sure it was just that one and you could probably just remove the small object blocking it.
I don't bend them up, I bend them out just a tad. Yes, I also will not buy a frog if the hooks are pointing up Scum, Tekel and Reactions to name a few... I agree set the hook as hard as you can.. No wonder my popping perch sinks, I have Rev 0 with the hole on top.
I am a bass eater. I have cleaned thousands. I have seen snakes, bugs, birds, crawfish, turtles, every kind of fish, lures, and even a squirrel, but I have never seen a frog. How about anyone out there?
Noooooo!! You never cut the tail on the popping perch!! I thought it was designed to keep the profile!! And Hallman said your rod is too stiff. Haha! JK if you didn't watch his most recent video yet.
Well if you bend a hook that far on a frog is wrong. You supposed to just bend the hook JUST enough to change the trajectory upwards just enough where the bite is coming down on you hook point. 🎣👊🏿
Yea but why, why would a frog be so different than every other bait. Why don't you have to bend the hook out on anything else just the frog, every other hook that is designed that way is fine. I believe that the hook is fine, I've never had an issue ever with hooking fish and I believe that the setup for most is wrong. I'm not compromising one thing to make another right. I'll change the one problem that way I don't create another.
Maybe it's a confidence thing in frog fishing we get from certain pros as tips. So you are a pro and now I gotta take that into consideration if I lose a Big one and my hook comes back straighten out.🤷Keep the🎣tips coming TC.👊🏿

You thinking way, way to hard about it. Just get a 7- 7'3 heavy and be done with it lol. Sometimes having more can hurt your productivety
What color poppin perch do you recommend for this time of year? For Texas reservoirs in shallow pads for late summer early fall
The water is usually clearer now so natural is better, any of the perch colors because thats the only reason they are up there, that and big gizzards. Pad fishing you can't go wrong with white or black. If you watch my next video about pads you'll understand why.
@toddcastledine I laughed when Scott came out with his frog video and said the opposite lol. But I agree the popping Perch doesn’t need it
Really, I have seen that yet, but thats funny.
Todd Castledine Fishing yes sir, just a difference of opinion. But I’m sure it will give y’all a laugh at Rayburn 😂
Yes I can
Thanks
Thank bro
Any time
I have the Cara T7 Amistad and the tip is not right for frog placement... can't get an accurate at all.
Try to get your hands on the xh and check it out
Ive had em gut hooked immediately after the blowup. They can get really hungry sometimes
Yea they can
Hell ya on tryin to break your equipment.
BOTTOMS UP SON
Hows the tip and bend on that rod?
Its one of those rods that does everything great I talk about it constantly. Sometimes you find a rod that loads perfect and thats it.
Dam, did those wasps keep going after you when you got out??
No I floated the boat away from them
What happened to #3 ? How to work it. You often call this your open water frog. Can you expand on that ? What are you calling open water ? Grass edges vs.in the junk ?
Never mind on the open water. Strike King writers conference 2 vids answered that
I pond fish a lot and I killem on the smaller Poppin perch
Pip squeak is deadly subtle
2:17 LMFAO
Yea I had to put that back in there for the guys that hadn't seen it.
@@toddcastledinefishing5924 O....M....G!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The perch I mean the material it's made off is just so much tuffer and hard for fish to to get the hook for me anyways.
Really I've had more people talk about how soft it is and how much it compresses. We made the material soft and thin for this reason.
@@toddcastledinefishing5924 I'm sure it had to be. Just wanted to bring it to your attention is all.
Yea check out the ones
My hook up ratio is 88% better with the hooks bent 12% from stock
88% better LOL. Mine is 88.5% without bending the hooks. LOL
@@toddcastledinefishing5924 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I’m with you on the hook bending. That’s BS
I hear ya
Bought me a couple PP. I see why you don't bend the hooks. They lay in the proper position. Body is nice and soft, collapses easily.
Thank you, Glad you liked them.
I am a bass eater. I have cleaned thousands. I have seen snakes, bugs, birds, crawfish, turtles, every kind of fish, lures, and even a squirrel, but I have never seen a frog. How about anyone out there?
I’ve seen a perch
okay
yes
Noooooo!! You never cut the tail on the popping perch!! I thought it was designed to keep the profile!! And Hallman said your rod is too stiff. Haha! JK if you didn't watch his most recent video yet.
Oh yea I saw him, he's always disagreeing with me.
😂 when you know, you know 😮
Well if you bend a hook that far on a frog is wrong.
