Ristar, released as Ristar the Shooting Star in Japan, is a platform game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis in 1995. A Sega Game Gear game of the same name and genre, Ristar, was also released, which shared similar themes while possessing different level design and gameplay mechanics.
The game stars an anthropomorphic cartoon star who uses his hands and long, stretchable arms to both move and combat enemies. Reception for the game has been generally positive, but the game's initial release was overshadowed due to the imminent ending of the Genesis's lifecycle and the succession of the Sega Saturn and other fifth generation video game consoles. While never receiving any sequels, Sega has re-released the game a number of times digitally and on Sega-themed compilations, and has occasionally given Ristar himself cameos in other Sega properties.
A number of small changes were made in localizing the version released for English speaking countries. In all versions of the game, the events take place in the Valdi System, where an evil space pirate, Kaiser Greedy, has used mind control to make the planets' leaders obey him. In the Japanese version, the inhabitants of Planet Neer (Flora in the English-language version) pray for a hero before Greedy's mind control minion, Rhio, snatches the planet elder. The desperate prayers reach the nebula of the Star Goddess, Oruto. She awakens one of her children, Ristar, with the sole purpose of granting the wishes of the innocent people. He must stop Greedy and the brainwashed leaders of each world in the galaxy to restore peace to the galaxy. In the English-language version, Oruto is omitted altogether. Instead, Ristar has a father figure, the Legendary Hero, who is a shooting star that protects the Valdi System. Rather than Oruto awakening Ristar, the Legendary Hero was kidnapped by Greedy, and it is up to Ristar to rescue his father as well. The story was altered slightly; in the Japanese version, a Star Goddess, Oruto, summons Ristar's help, where in the English version, Oruto is omitted completely, and Ristar's father, a "Legendary Hero", is referenced instead. The boss of the ice themed level, Itamor, was changed from a large cat robot to an ice monster. In the game, Ristar must grab hot dishes of food, and throw it in Itamor's mouth. In Japan, it was considered clever to use hot food to defeat a cat, due to a Japanese culture reference regarding a "cat-tongue" not liking hot food. In English-speaking regions, that reference is non-existent, so it was changed to a cold ice monster being defeated by being melted by hot food. The rest of the changes were very minor edits in effort to appeal to western audiences, such as minor graphical changes to make Ristar and other character's faces look more serious, renaming levels to names more descriptive of their looks, and adding a few non-interactive scenes to show more continuity in the game, such as a skiing sequence before level 5, or putting on anti-gravity shoes to explain why Ristar is floating in level 6. The Japanese version of the game ends with Greedy, and two underlings, Iounus and Uranium, stranded on a deserted planet, with a picture of Ristar appearing in the space, while Greedy simply stares at it. The ending scene shown in the English shows Ristar being re-united with his father once again.
Played on Hard difficulty. There is a password-unlocked extra difficulty mode, SUPER or SUPERB. It is like Hard but all hidden items are replaced with enemies (which is why I didnt play on it), so the player doesnt usually get any extra hit points and no extra lives.
In this longplay, I find all treasure and try to collect all hidden items, including those respawning within a reasonable range after I visit a bonus stage. I also take my time to show animations, explore levels, and demonstrate all bosses abilities, however, I forgot to show that you can switch the lights on at the end of Level 1-2 by bumping into treetops. After beating the game, I show the passwords as well as continue and game over screens. -

This game has one of my favourite level transitions of all time.

Underappreciated game, one of the best platformers from the 16-bit generation. It came out really late in the Gen lifespan, 95 I believe, guess it was inevitable that it would suffer some obscurity.

Yeah perhaps, you could say that about a decent number of Gen/MD games that get very little appreciation, like Shinobi 3.

I LOVED Ristar growing up back in the day! Well on the Sonic collections
You can tell this is the Japanese version because:
There are no Subtitles on the Intro
There is a green Star-like figure appearing after the Peed is sent
Ristar's reaction is Happy instead of Angry/Determined
The Mech Birds boss fight on Planet 4 Signals when they are about to attack
The Cutscene of Ristar skiing downhill is removed
The Planet 5 boss is more Cat-like
Greedy is in the final scene of the Ending, instead of Ristar reuniting with his dad
The peed?

If people say to you that Mega Drive's music sounds terrible, show them this game.
Japanese developers knew how to work with the Genesis/MD's soundchip, western developers, not so much. Now when it comes to sound effects, the Genesis/MD was quite weak there. Sega cheaped out a bit with the soundchip to help keep costs down.

By the way, this is the Japanese version of Ristar. The Western version of the game has text during the intro among other changes.

it didn’t matter how many times i got to the final boss, he was too freakin difficult to beat, and getting to the later levels was challenging enough. either way, great game and soundtrack

Oh to the Ehm to the Gee, my entire childhood right here. This game had the most cheerful soundtrack in history, these songs will reverse the direction of any suicide-oriented mind 100%, guaranteed.
It's several years since the last time I played and I see the pixel art is always fantastic (beautiful use of color too), as is the music, especially the boss theme that has stuck in my head since. The bird boss is my favourite.
I'll have to watch a video of the western version, but from what I remember of the ending sequence, this one's better. Showing the main villain and his henchmen exiled or escaped, probably implied the idea of a sequel - which never came to be, sadly.

I know right? I seen other playthroughs and this one gets that message more than the ones I saw. I wonder why.
I think they forgot to put the word Don't in there, which seems rather odd. When you play a good game like this, and you are on a roll, why give up.
I think it was meant to say "I give up" as in "You're too good, I give up", which makes sense, since this is a japanese game and japanese language frequently omits pronouns
To the Player: at 50:42 You missed one thing; the *Mary had a Little Lamb* Easter Egg on Planet 4 after delivering the last Metronome; takes about a minute for it to play before rushing to the Mech Birds Boss, not sure if it works in the Japanese Version...

I remember being in second grade and playing this on Sega channel with my big sis. Music and game play is legendary.
Interestingly, one of the first foes you run into is a rabbit with stretchy ears trying to grab you. That's impressive since that was almost sonic.

Also Ristar gives different messages at the end of each world depending of your score, but I never noticed the "Give up!!" one, you are so good you should give up playing this game?! Or you should stop making a bigger score maybe.
Also my cardridge always glitched on stage 5-2 and I never saw the graphics on my first life except some glitchy pixels so I had to die to see them. But I learned the level and I was able to clear it with glitched graphics, ah, memories~
I could also get stuck after beating Uranim when the pinch was too far away to catch him before the cutscene.
That's probably a engrish kind of mistake, since this "give up" stuff is only on the Japanese version.
I just realised the first boss of this game was ripped and recoloured for freedom planet.

how can this person be good at getting all the bonus items and getting the highest score when leaving the levels and yet they easily get hurt by some of the simplest enemies and dragged the boss fights on?? makes no sense

De este juego, yo nunca entendí porque hay 2 versiones diferentes si no tiene nada censurable pero la versión americana tiene diferencias con la Japonesa, para empezar, los bichos esos que vuelan del primer planeta son diferentes, en el 5to planeta, Ristar esquía antes de llegar al nivel mientras que la Japonesa ya esta en el nivel y los jefes son distintos en la Japonesa es un gato robot mientras que la Americana es una especie como de muñeco de hielo pero basado en el diseño original (osea solo le sacaron las orejas y le pusieron un gorrito y le dieron apariencia como de derretido).
Realmente no lo comprendo.
Son culturas distintas amigo (en el caso del jefe del planeta 5) en lo demás probablemente los cambiaron por la época

I played this on a Sega Genesis Collection on ps2. Controls of this game is a little wonky to me. I do enjoy it's soundtrack so I'm just sitting here like how did you people play this game lol

I think if this game was made before Sonic, it would have been a huge hit. Trust me, I love this game. It’s definitely impressive for its time. I just don’t understand why this game has to be so dang underrated and not-liked. What game in 1995 do you know that can have this much? The developers spent time making this wonderful game, and it’s just a lost video game. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Edit/Question: Why when every planet if completed does it say “Give Up!!”?
