awesome shootout, marty. my personal favorite has to be either Big Muff or Octafuzz. if I may give a gear recommendation, I'd say check out the Metal Muff also by electro harmonix, I personally love it.
well done comparison marty. no bs, good variety of riffs, chords and solos. i noticed there wasn't any love for the octafuzz. i own one and i have to tell you, i've tried it on my board with different guitars, amps, pickups and i never fails to sound like shit.
I like the sound of the Big Muff over them all. I guess it would depend on the context of what you were going for with the pedals. The Swollen Pickle sounds a bit too muddy, but definitely can see it used in the right situation. Good stuff!
I have Swollen Pickle that I play more Doom Rock stuff on, and that pedal is super versatile. You can get most tones out of it. I do have that 69 Band of Gypsy’s fuzz from MXR, and it’s definitely more like the Octafuzz. Great if you want it to sound vintage, like you took a razor blade through your speaker. I love it, but it’s really limited.
Swollen pickle is the superior pedal for sure. It has the most versatility when you crack it open and find the two knobs inside of the casing that can further adjust the sound to your liking. Can’t discredit the muff though.
The swollen pickle 😂, gave a fat crunch sound to the riffs, I like it. And the big muff I think is old reliable, can't go wromg with it. And that Octafuzz delivered a more Velcro rip of a fuzz type, very good.
The EHX Muff gave you more Individual Note Definition ( which I prefer ). The Pickle sounded like Bees in a Can. For Fuzz / Muff style pedals, I like: Wampler: Velvet Fuzz, Noel: Cornet ( Best Ever ) Blackout Effectors: Musket Fuzz, ( most versatile ) Vick Audio: 73 Rams Head, Electric Orange: Pig Hoof, One Control: Baltic Blue Fuzz, Skreedy P-19, Top Tone: DG-1 - all are phenomenal fuzz / muff pedals for the David Gilmour / Jimi Hendrix / Tony Iommi & Santana Sound. I do Hours & Hours of Research on Pedals & Effects. - Michael Caz - NYC -
Being a Telecaster player, I've always relied on fuzz to have a bit of bottom and not be too thin, especially when I'm bridge position, an issue I've faced with the fuxx fuzz (although still an awesome pedal) For me the Big muff with the tone wicker has been perfect when trying and I'm definitely getting one
Big Muff Pi is definitely my fave. I love the octave and fuzz combo sound, but like the BMP fuzz sound better than the Octafuzz. Would rather run a POG with a Big Muff. Great demo!
Big Muff all the way! Love it. Just bought the huge and I mean HUGE silver unit and it's great...when I first saw it in the cabinet I thought it was a promotional unit as it was so big...in this shoot out it just cuts through more. It's great.
Today I probably like the Pickle, followed by the Muff, but that's just me based on what your playing. I'm sure some music would be better with that gated/low bias sound of the Octafuzz, particularly modern stuff. Right now I'm mostly using a Scarab, from Basic Audio. It really gives you a lot of control over the fuzz sound so you can go from Jimmi to Mascus to Radiohead with a couple dials.
Marty could you explain the technicalities of combing the Swollen Pickle and the Big Muff? Like get rid of the scientific language and give it to us strait. Love this down, dirty, raw, primal sound, thanx for doing this Marty, are you reading my mind, I will have to put more tinfoil under my hat. MartyMusic is reaching higher and higher!
I'll always love the Big Muff as my favorite fuzz, but was impressed by the difference in Swollen Pickle tones and fuzz. I didn't like the Octafuzz as much, but it only inspires me to plug one in and monkey around with it more, to see what I can get out of it.
Great demo! I think the Swollen Pickle has a more modern, unhinged fuzz tone while the Big Muff has a more old school, [relative to fuzz] tighter sound to it. Love them both, but may have to go after the Muff after this...
Thanks dude! You convinced me in the TS9 video to get that pedal! I was wondering if you could do one review of the metal muff. I'm already subscribed. Greetings from Chile!
Big Muff is my favorite. Octafuz is the sound that comes to mind (so much gain it's crapping out) when I think of fuzz pedals. Or two dirt stages that don't work well together.
I have the big muff PO with the toggle switch. I get really bad feedback and it doesn’t sound like the classic Big Muff. I think the classic one or the Nano has a better sound and easier to adjust for the sound your looking for. The only way I could get a really good sound was to chain another fuzz pedal with it. The one upside is that you can get good high end sound from it with the toggle switched on.
Great video. Loved hearing you jam away with the three pedals. The shootout is a brilliant idea and I'd like to see you do it again. Personally, I liked the sound of the Big Muff best. But... "Yeah, well, ya know that's just, like, ah, my opinion, man."
The big pickle for that big super saturated scary tone... The octofuzz to me sounds almost perfect for chasing a Hendrix tone. And big muff seems to be somwhere right in between
I'd stack the swollen pickle with the octafuzz but dial down the swollen pickle so that the octafuzz was more the leading kinda sound so that the swollen pickle adds some nice middle range that the octafuzz I feel lacks
A tie between The Swollen Muff and The Big Pickle :) The Swollen Pickle does have more controls for more varied tones. I understand Octafuzz requires its own special external power supply (kind of a negative xtra $$$). Good demo - those fuzz tones must have driven you nuts!
What do you guys like to use fuzz pedals with? Chorus? Reverb? Flangies? I like reverb with chorus with the swollen pick, have tge crunch low the volume and sustain around 10 or 11 o clock, sounds good to me
I have the SP and the BM (the exact versions he is using actually) and i gotta say, the swollen pickle can do a shit load of tones. You can get a tone bender, a fuzzrite and a big muff all with ease. I recommend if you are thinking of getting either go for the SP (and no i don't work nor care about either brand, I actually love a lot of EHX pedals including the classic muffs). PS the octafuzz sounds really anemic in this demo, never owned or been around one; maybe it is just a 1 in a 1,000 bad one??
Hi Marty! How about serie like: licks position1; licks position2' licks position3 and so on? Unfortunatley most of licks is in position 1 and whole rest is skipped. Of course i mean pentatonic positions.
Great comparison. Big Muff #1. The Swollen Pickle sounds like a digital ocean of razor blade sharp pixels a la Metal Zone. Octafuzz sounds like it's trying to be the Big Muff. At least for the settings you used.
I liked the Big Muff sound. The sheer amount of pedals out there today seem to give me option paralysis. So I would like to see the 3 types of pedals that would cover most classic/hard rock music songs that a beginner would like to play.
Marty! As always another great gear vid! Maybe do different strings you use on a gear video one of these days? I'd like to see it! Im sure others would as well!
Could you do an overdrive tubescreamerish shootout between the 'Way Huge Green Rhino MK IV', the 'Ibanez Tubescreamer' and the 'Visual Sound/Truetone Double Trouble' That would be great Thanks Marty
Any time there's a Big Muff you can always find a Swollen Pickle. Okay, seriously...I just got a Fulltone OCD and I thought a Big Muff would fill in nicely for a fuzzier tone that the OCD gives. Thoughts?
Am i the only one? I came here because i was offered a good deal on a swollen pickle and im sold on it here, i was listening while looking up some other junk and everytime he switched to the sp i looked up to see which it was cause it sounded that much better imo. Thnx marty for having a video for pretty much every guitar question i ever have 👍
Can you do some more smashing pumpkins lessons. You did cherub rock and 1979 on the old channel and those were great. Also you should do a vid on the memory man pedal
the swollen pickle is the best in my opinion, go to a store and listen to them yourself! you'll see! only the fact that you have 5 different controls that the other 2 don't makes a huge difference. look how Marty enjoys playing more to the pickle!
I went through some of these fuzz pedals before seeing this video. I just needed some big muff. That is what I ended up getting. I liked the swollen pickle but it did not seem to get as good highs. Big Muff is always good.
What's the riff your playing at 2 minutes in Marty? cos it sounds awesome and I'm gonna get a fuzz for my first pedal, so it would be a lifesaver if you tell me. Thanks for being awesome
I like that you ran the swollen pickle into the big muff. Anatomically appropriate :)
asc95 :) :) :) :) :D
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
asc95 I'm screaming.
And because of that it came out with a little octofuzz in the end.
asc95 You also need a Way Huge Saucy Box for a 3-way
At about 4:02 where you accidentally had both the pickle and the muff at the same time sounded fantastic together
Thanks for supporting me at my project everybody! What gear would you like to see me cover?
Marty Music Hey. Can you make lessons for Metallica - Master of Puppets?
Thanks.
You are the best! Keep it up! :)
Marty Music Wah wah shootout!
Marty Music fender tour
You said you were not far from there
Marty Music delay pedal shootout
awesome shootout, marty. my personal favorite has to be either Big Muff or Octafuzz.
if I may give a gear recommendation, I'd say check out the Metal Muff also by electro harmonix, I personally love it.
The low-end response of the Swollen Pickle personally tickled my pickle.
well done comparison marty. no bs, good variety of riffs, chords and solos. i noticed there wasn't any love for the octafuzz. i own one and i have to tell you, i've tried it on my board with different guitars, amps, pickups and i never fails to sound like shit.
I want to take my Way Huge Swollen pickle & put it into a Big Muff & Make one Saucy Box!
Definitely the Swollen Pickle for me. It sounds so raunchy, but more musical than the other two.
I've always been a fan of a fuzzy big muff.
I love the muff tone wicker but the swollen pickle is just huge and more versatile.
Are we just going to ignore that the Swollen Pickle is plugged into the Big Muff
It’s not plugged into it, they’re all just connected so that he can switch from on to another
heyyy that's hot
Wow.
Some of the comments... just don’t get the joke.
@@YaYa-ke1zr we all know that one person who needs the joke explained to them, so they can still go "huh, how's that funny?"
@@55maltesers Yeah, let’s not explain it. I think I need that Swollen Pickle (pedal) tho.
But. Wow.
I have a swollen pickle, my wife has the big muff. I like them both!
did you tickle her with the pickle?
Michael D if you say so...
Do you use dirty fingers?
yeah my flying v has dirty fingers especially after fingering A Minor scale
do you put the pickle in the muff?
Not enough fuzz. Turn on all three and max them out. I want to feel my ear hair growing.
For
The
Win
😆
Ear hair dying you mean
My man just watching you jam helps me learn. Thanks
Just bought a fender mexican startocaster in glossy cherry red with a maple neck (think thats the lighter neck)
I love the sound of that big muff, I think it will be the first one I buy
Really great way to go from one pedal to the other ,we really here the difference well.Fantastic!!!Thanks.
Oh man...that big muff is just wowwwwwww
Joe B It just sounds huge!
I've been wanting to buy the swollen pickle for ages, but I don't know how tf I'm gonna go into guitar center and say that...
Deanna McLoughlin
Ask if they have a matching Saucy Box XD
I am torn, all are great, but I love a Big Muff!
Yeh, I agree ... a bit biased as I have a Little Big Muff. I'd like to see a Tube Screamer demo.
I like the sound of the Big Muff over them all. I guess it would depend on the context of what you were going for with the pedals. The Swollen Pickle sounds a bit too muddy, but definitely can see it used in the right situation. Good stuff!
I know I'm a half a decade late, but the internal trim pots for the pickle really help liven it up.

My fav is the swollen pickle. Doesn’t sound too generic to me which is something I like. Easy choice for me is the swollen pickle.
- Michael Caz - NYC -
Big Muff - Own one myself and still love it after all this time (and pedals)
Those are possibly my all time favorite shoes. Tough to say, but definitely top 5
Big muff, swollen pickle...where's the brown hole? I've heard it's dirty tone is unmatched
Once they enter the Brown Hole, then things will get really 'messy' hehe
I heard the Brown Hole gets way too muddy if you crank it
Freidman hasthe browneye but its and OD pedal.
Makes a stink too
I’ve owned all three of these pedals. Sold the BM tone wicker which I shouldn’t have. Didn’t care for the SP too much. The OF is still on my board.
Great demo!
Probably Big Muff for me
Loved the random solos btw always nice to see you play
Big Muff all the way! Love it. Just bought the huge and I mean HUGE silver unit and it's great...when I first saw it in the cabinet I thought it was a promotional unit as it was so big...in this shoot out it just cuts through more. It's great.

Explanation: don't do it. LOL
I want to pick the Swollen Pickle but I think I like the treble and distortion more of the Big Muff. Decisions decisions!
I'll always love the Big Muff as my favorite fuzz, but was impressed by the difference in Swollen Pickle tones and fuzz. I didn't like the Octafuzz as much, but it only inspires me to plug one in and monkey around with it more, to see what I can get out of it.
first video that swollen pickle gets a descent comparison, well done.great pedal, love mine
I think the swollen pickle sounded the best. Also it looks like there's more control knobs on it.
When he accidentally activated the first two pedals together.....that was just heavy awesomeness👍🏽
Swollen Pickle for me, it sounds thick, mean and badass overall.
FYI: You really should use the neck pickup when playing the Octafuzz to get the full effect. It really brings out the harmonics and overtones..
Great demo! I think the Swollen Pickle has a more modern, unhinged fuzz tone while the Big Muff has a more old school, [relative to fuzz] tighter sound to it. Love them both, but may have to go after the Muff after this...
Big Muff for sure, think i gonna buy it

Big Muff is my favorite. Octafuz is the sound that comes to mind (so much gain it's crapping out) when I think of fuzz pedals. Or two dirt stages that don't work well together.
Swollen Pickle - Good for Punk/Hardcore
Big Muff - Good for Class Rock/Hard Rock
Octafuzz - Good for Alt/Indie/Classic Rock
I have the big muff PO with the toggle switch. I get really bad feedback and it doesn’t sound like the classic Big Muff. Love the aggressiveness of the octofuzz, definitely under rated
Probably my favourite in the vid

I really like the demo !! I think I like the big muff !!!! It sounds great around the basses
Thank you. Helpful video
Omg dude I'm dying, I can't stop laughing at that giant pickle Marty's got between his legs lmao!!!!! Sounds great though
Thanks Marty. They all sound great but if I had to choose one, it'd be the Big Muff.
A tie between The Swollen Muff and The Big Pickle :) The Swollen Pickle does have more controls for more varied tones. I understand Octafuzz requires its own special external power supply (kind of a negative xtra $$$). Good demo - those fuzz tones must have driven you nuts!

That Pickle got me rocking.
I like this idea of 3 different pedals. Now I hear the difference of them. I like the swollen pickle and the big muff.
I feel like based on guitar solo facial expressions alone you liked the swollen pickle the best. :). Thanks Marty. Keep up the great work!
Hi Marty! How about serie like: licks position1; licks position2' licks position3 and so on? Unfortunatley most of licks is in position 1 and whole rest is skipped. Of course i mean pentatonic positions.

beginner Q, how do u get a good fuzz sound? run it thru amp distortion? or run it thru clean channel?
The pickle is great for lower notes and cords but the big muff has an amazing lead and to me is the all around best pedal
Marty! As always another great gear vid! Maybe do different strings you use on a gear video one of these days? I'd like to see it! Im sure others would as well!
Could you do an overdrive tubescreamerish shootout between the 'Way Huge Green Rhino MK IV', the 'Ibanez Tubescreamer' and the 'Visual Sound/Truetone Double Trouble'
That would be great
Thanks Marty
I already have a big muff and a octafuzz was going to be my next pedal but this changed my mind.
The big Muff!!!!!
The Muff and the Swollen Pickle are the ones to beat.
I think that the pickle is extremely dynamic and you can dial in more tones, where with the big muff has less of a range.
Should I get a swollen pickle or a byoc large beaver or a fuzzrocious demon?
the swallon pickle was my favorite
Could you do a review on amps at all please? Your personal favourites?
octafuzz sounded really off or weird in the vid, i dont think it normally should sound like that?
Agree. I have one and it nails Hendrix and Blue on black by that kid...
Maybe a multi-FX pedal shootout? Line 6 vs Eventide H9?
Big Muff my choice. Perfect for the original tone of "I wanna be your dog"
8:39 sounds like Trip Away by Jane's Addiction
Any time there's a Big Muff you can always find a Swollen Pickle. Okay, seriously...I just got a Fulltone OCD and I thought a Big Muff would fill in nicely for a fuzzier tone that the OCD gives. Thoughts?

You saying Marty enjoys a swollen pickle more than a big muff?
I went through some of these fuzz pedals before seeing this video. I just needed some big muff. That is what I ended up getting. I liked the swollen pickle but it did not seem to get as good highs. Big Muff is always good.
Big muff, would any of these pedals sound half as good being ran through a solid state amp? Thanks for the vid Marty 🤘
Sure. It's not a huge difference.
Ok they’re all good but it comes down to price now, what’s the price on these jems?
Don't care how old this post is. The pickle is a beast!
big muff! no doubt about it
I think Marty is a BIG fan of JIMI ! I love it.
It would be great to see inexpensive pawn shop guitars & vintage tube amps. Got to have all 3 of these Fuzziness pedals. They all have their own mojo.
Hey Marty, great tasty lead playing. You should a shoot on wah pedals.
Nice video. Thanks. But totally missed opportunity to turn them all on at once.
What's the riff your playing at 2 minutes in Marty? cos it sounds awesome and I'm gonna get a fuzz for my first pedal, so it would be a lifesaver if you tell me. Thanks for being awesome
Big Muff, without a doubt.
would you go to wal mart and get the strat o want to be. besides smashing the thing , what can be done?
