One time I crashed and my video went to static. I thought I had destroyed my VTX. Nope, it still had blinking lights. I did a channel scan and found it had somehow changed bands! It had little buttons to change band and channel, I figure something must have hit the button. It never happened again, but if you have static a channel scan is a cheap and easy check.
Bardwell your videos always seem to come out right as I am thinking of particular drone related topics! Crashed my drone on Tuesday, got black screen but I still had osd and vtx transmission. I threw the drone on the bench and luckily all I had to do was solder the signal wire back on because it had busted off and within 5 min I was up and flying again. Ouch. Which AIO from BetaFPV was that? Wanted to buy the BetaFPV Toothpick F405 20A V4 for my micro long range built but if their AIOs just die like that.. I'm having video black out.. now I'm just hoping its just my quad and nothing else.. so I have some troubleshooting questions. Any help is appreciated as I a little stumped after I thought I figured out the problem and I'm still quite new into the hobby. 1. I'm having video black out as I fly away which I thought was a problem with my VTX or antennas, as I'm only flying about 30-40 metres away before it flickers black and the cuts out completely showing OSD. Even when I get up close to the quad to retrieve it, sometimes it does not reconnect at all and I have to disconnect and reconnect the power supply. I've tried the cables and I've kept the quad high and there are no interference near me. Tinyhawk freestyle 2 with caddx turtle v2 cam VTX at 25 and 200mV. 2. I changed to a different quad and found on my first pack, I had the same issue very briefly. Again I played around with the antennas and the remaining 7 packs I had no issues with the odd very minimal flicker from the second pack. (Protek 35 analog VTX at 400mV) 3. I switched back to my first quad and I managed to fly further out (about 80 metres), but after a while, it flickered black but didn't black out completely,. I managed to land it but then it it just suddenly blacked out and didn't recover (hitting it, wiggle the cables and tapping around it, until I disconnected the power and plugged it back in.) Updated: 11:10pm same day - After stripping apart my quad.. I have found that the 5v power and ground cable has deteriorated on the Caddx Turtle, which is very strange as the Caddx Turtle carried on recording in HD... ? How if the power was interrupted? maybe it's also the video cable?.. Good trouble shooting video. Helped me id the problem by back tracking each component. So final question. Can your fpv goggles cause blackouts and static? e.g. your antennas are not on properly, busted or dirty connectors? or a dodgy receiver? I have the eachine EV200D. I'm asking as I had a flicker with my second quad which is still a potential issue despite fixing my Emax Freestyle II, and I've also had the same issues with my tiny whoops flying 3 metres away from me and I completely lose video feed when usually I can fly around my house? Can dirty connectors on our antennas affect your feed that much despite I have a Quad set up

Same issue with mine, got black screen after the crash, part of the board 5v not working which i believe is powering the osd, a lot of headache to trace out as i plan to run a dedicated 5v bec. This is the awesome betafpv aio 12a. Sucks. My Mamba aio 13a still alive even if i soak it on rain water.
Even if the video output from the FC is defective, you can still use/activate the cam's OSD (inc. voltage monitoring), at least temporarily after soldering cam and vtx directly 😉
Hello Joshua. I have a black screen problem now, i have VTx signal coming out of the VTx, but no video on the screen display, and no OSD display either. I have checked my fpv camera and plugged it into another drone, at it worked fine. But using a different camera on the VTx got me the same problem. I followed your video till the part where you unsolder / solder the video wires from the fpv camera and the VTx from the FC. Which video wire from the VTx should i tap / solder together with the fpv video wire? From the FC to the VTx i see 2 video wire, one says V-out, the other V-in? BTW, i am using the GEPRC Stable AIO FC with the GEP-VTX200-WHOOP VTx. I hope you can help me. Thanks much!
So i have a similar problem: black screen with osd, but if i disconnect and connect the battery, sometimes it works. Untill i disconnect the battery again. But the thing is, that im talking about a whoop, with aio fc. So only camera is separate. What can be the problem?
I had a similar issue an cheap 20x20 fc. A change of the osd font brought me to the solution. Change it to bold font or some other of the BF fonts... Reset the fc & esc and check if it worked. I had trouble to do this, but after some tries it worked from then. I had to plug in a battery to update the freaking osd chip... Maybe it works for you. Good luck and happy flying 🐈
LOL I just got to the exact same point of troubleshooting on a whoop after trying 3 cameras. Thanks JB - even though I watched this 2 years ago, it is still helpful. 😎

Can you do a video to troubleshoot a Caddx Vista with nebula cam? I have osd, but black screen. I think it could be just the cable, but don't know how to test it.
i had the same thing happen to me anf funnily i did the EXACT same things i soldered vtx and cam together and it worked and i also put them back normally just to see if it magically worked again
Hey josh I got static screen and can’t see my vtx chart.. I went into vtx sa where it said pit mode I tuned it on & hit set and my drone tuned off and on with no camera and this problem .. any ideas
Hi Joshua, was the camera getting a positive voltage from the FC? I've had three quads that have failed like this.. Add an external 5v + feed or vbat if acceptable to the camera and presto I can fly again. 👍 Regards Steve
All my caneras turn on black screen.. some after few flight few minutes.. the last one was b screen straignt out of the box… no matter the trx the wires the battery or the fc… any camera i touch..become black
I've got the same problem Just that I've got overexposed video with osd working but if I solder the video wires directly the video is good and well exposed..I think my flight controller osd/video part is somewhat damaged or bridged.
Finally a video on this problem on UA-cam. Had my Roma L3, from the specs it can use ntsc or pal. When switch, one with black screen with osd but the other one working fine. So I think it was problem with the fc? Found this out even before I fly it. Maybe you can try switch between that two?
I did exactly everything that I was watching you do. I also did another way of checking to see if torn wires were within casings of the wire that was good switch cameras that was good on soldered my OSD from the flight controller and it’s still giving me black screen
This was my first major problem with my tiny trainer. Awesome tip on cross-referencing the fc with that bypass. I got lucky with my betafpv board and it just died over a year later! (esc) Cheers!
What does it mean when you have video until you fly 20 feet away and the screen goes black (but still have OSD)??? I got the nanohawk X and crashed about for a while flying LOS before putting the goggles on. So i don't know if i hurt something in a crash.
The distance to the drone should only affect the video transmitter signal, not the camera. So I have to guess the camera is shutting down because maybe it's overheating (and the fact that you're flying away is a coincidence). But bottom line, it sounds like the camera or the camera wiring is damaged.
@@JoshuaBardwell It flickers to black. And as i walk to it, my fpv feed comes back in clear. Thanks, you're a nice guy. I wrote that wrong after checking, i DO NOT have OSD
sorry BetaFPV is dead to me,, Flywoo AIO 45a BLHELI32 for this... Lost 2 betafpvs before i ever soldered a motor. 1 in a tiny trainer and the other in a pod racer. RaceDay Quads however took good care of me. I used the foxeer's voltage and runtime osd for my trainer once the betafpv was dying.. Then not too long after, the esc started dying, and now i only get flywoo aio with the blheli32, no jesc flashing , it just works better.
I feel the same about BetaFPV. I recently got the Flywoo GOKU GNF411 20A and got the Goku HM600 vtx to go with it. Awesome board, I love it! BLHeli32, 2 uarts plus 2 softserial ports, blackbox and the 4 led's at the corners of the board is a nice touch.
I believe the same thing happened to me. I blamed it on the OSD chip. I Hooked up a RealPIT Switch to Vbat and a UART to turn it on/off The VTX, camera to the RealPIT. Turn on the Camera OSD to show voltage.
@@JoshuaBardwell it works with my cam soldered to the vtx just like yours. Still black when i put it back to the fc. Is my FC done for or is there a setting somewhere that could cause this?

his videos always solve my problem❤❤😊😊
i had the same thing happen to me anf funnily i did the EXACT same things i soldered vtx and cam together and it worked and i also put them back normally just to see if it magically worked again
Same issue here.. But i see the osd.. But the camera is black.. When i direct camera to the vtx have a display on screen... Its it fc burn?
If camera video wire was bridged for example, could that also cause black screen?
Hey josh I got static screen and can’t see my vtx chart.. I went into vtx sa where it said pit mode I tuned it on & hit set and my drone tuned off and on with no camera and this problem .. any ideas
Hi Joshua, was the camera getting a positive voltage from the FC? I've had three quads that have failed like this.. Add an external 5v + feed or vbat if acceptable to the camera and presto I can fly again. 👍
Regards
Steve
i was getting this error after landing on Wet Grass after removing any wet grass and letting the drone dry completly it worked just as new.
what does it mean if i have static and my osd is working?
BrainFPV is notorious for this. I've had multiple Raddix boards do this. I think the OSD basically fries itself.
All my caneras turn on black screen.. some after few flight few minutes.. the last one was b screen straignt out of the box… no matter the trx the wires the battery or the fc… any camera i touch..become black
My goes black when i turn on the trasmiter is loco, with osd sometime
Might be time to try the iflight beast aio
I've got the same problem Just that I've got overexposed video with osd working but if I solder the video wires directly the video is good and well exposed..I think my flight controller osd/video part is somewhat damaged or bridged.
I do the magic thing , I reconnect to a 5 inch that never flew and than my shitty eachine box goggles work I'd that a thing or was it magic??
What if you bypass the fc and still get just a black screen?
How about a tutorial on the blackbox-tools?
Very sorry about the flight controller, but I really liked this format of video!
mine dont even beep
some cameras give battery voltage on their osd if you prefer it to telemetry
Finally a video on this problem on UA-cam. Had my Roma L3, from the specs it can use ntsc or pal. When switch, one with black screen with osd but the other one working fine. So I think it was problem with the fc? Found this out even before I fly it. Maybe you can try switch between that two?
happy freaking flying to you 2 jb
I did exactly everything that I was watching you do. I also did another way of checking to see if torn wires were within casings of the wire that was good switch cameras that was good on soldered my OSD from the flight controller and it’s still giving me black screen
This was my first major problem with my tiny trainer. Awesome tip on cross-referencing the fc with that bypass. I got lucky with my betafpv board and it just died over a year later! (esc) Cheers!
This was an entertaining vid to watch!
What would you suggest if when wiring direct to VTX or FC you get a black screen and no OSD? Im pulling hair right now.
That indicates the camera is not powered up or the camera is not sending video such as the video output wire is damaged.
Any pieces of conductive dirt in the FC?
Get battery voltage from camera osd?
What is camera joystick?
sorry BetaFPV is dead to me,, Flywoo AIO 45a BLHELI32 for this...
BLHeli32, 2 uarts plus 2 softserial ports, blackbox and the 4 led's at the corners of the board is a nice touch.
what about having video but no OSD?
I believe the same thing happened to me. I blamed it on the OSD chip. I Hooked up a RealPIT Switch to Vbat and a UART to turn it on/off The VTX, camera to the RealPIT. Turn on the Camera OSD to show voltage.
Could you try jhemcu?
Can i get battery voltage telemetry from crossfire if i end up doing what you did and solder the video wires together to bypass the fc?
You can get telemetry but not OSD.
@@JoshuaBardwell it works with my cam soldered to the vtx just like yours. Still black when i put it back to the fc. Is my FC done for or is there a setting somewhere that could cause this?
Have you come across any apps for the FPV that allow you to plot automated waypoints routes?
What’s that thing you use instead of your goggles
my dji avata has a black screen with osd tried everything nothing works any way u can advise a way to make it work??
Re seat the camera cable at both ends.
I had a beta fpv aio whoop die recently in a similar crash
Thats how i felt when the same thing happened to me on my nazgul5. It sucked
