This was released in 1970 when I was 3yrs old so I've known this song all my life. Apart from a couple of questionable lines by todays standards (no kids, you shouldn't drink & drive and no you can't do as you please just because her dad is poor) it still sounds excellent.
Lead singer Ray Dorset wrote this and you know when someone writes a song that is popular, it's been around for what feels like forever and it's paid the writer's mortgage? I'm pretty sure that this has paid Ray Dorset's mortgage! BTW, he's now 75 and still playing music ...

Mungojerrie is a character from a book by T.S. Elliot "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats". Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer are also characters in the Broadway musical "Cats" which is based on the aforementioned T.S. Elliot work.
In the film, "Logan's Run" there's a character, called simply "Old Man", played by Peter Ustinov. He is found by the main characters in the ruins of the U.S. capitol building with dozens and dozens of cats. He quotes several passages from "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats".

Brad, the way you analyze the music with the lyrics is a lot like how I always have. I think I’m a cross between you and Lex. I analyze it and lose myself in the music. "PUNCHBUGGY BLUE" while punching bro or your buddy in the shoulder. AND THERE WE ALOT OF PUNCHBUGGIES BACK IN THE 70'S AND EARLY 80'S hahahaha!!!

I have been literally listening to this song my entire life. It was a favorite of my fathers when it came out and I was just born. He used to sing it to himself when I was around all the time.

The visual artist that I'm reminded of is Wayne Thiebaud and his colourful images of ice creams, sugar candy and lipsticks.

This song brings me back to my childhood me, my parents and sisters cruising to the beach, no seat belts, no car seats, bopping around the back seat.

From 1969 or 70. This is a British Band. Most people think this is some Hillbilly Band from the southern United States. They aren't. Cool song, that's still popular, over 50 years later.

It's a classic pop tune, loved in the UK certainly, and I grew up with it. Also there's a nod in this song to Marc Bolan of T.Rex who was already singing in this style (with vibrato) and adding dee dee dee da da das to his songs, in the 1960s. But others say ;In The Summertime' in turn helped and inspired Marc Bolan to get his first hit (with T.Rex) with the song 'Ride A White Swan'. So these great artists were all borrowing ideas from each other. Great reaction, great song.

Wow, thank for the refreshment! That was a great song back when it came out and didn’t know anyone who didn’t like it!
Time for Huey Lewis and the News “I want a New Drug”, Heart of Rock ‘n Roll” are two great hits they had in early 80’s! They actually have many great songs!

We enjoyed this song and it was always playing at the school dances ( church didn’t allow it) but I tell you when you see the lead singer he looks like a werewolf.
