The 2021 GWM Ute is one of the cheapest 4x4 dual cab utes on the market. That’s despite the fact it is standard with 4WD and auto and is loaded with kit, plus a seven year warranty. Certainly, it’s miles better than any other Chinese ute we have tested. But with prices ranging from $35,490 driveaway to $41,990 driveaway, is this Great Wall cheap for a reason? In today’s review, we ask the key questions to find out why.
Rivals to the GWM Ute include the Mitsubishi Triton, Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger, Nissan Navara and Volkswagen Amarok.

Good test Tom. I might give this vehicle a chance in 2 model cycles. in the rental business, if it’s not a Hilux or Ranger, it sits unloved on the lot.

I can't believe how far GWM has come. Absolutely perfect beautiful car!

So its not that the GWM ute is cheap, its that the others are overpriced.
Exactly. If you are going to work on a mine site buy a Hiace but for your suburban tradie one of these is more than adequate.
The Great wall is overpriced. Considering what the slaves get paid to build it .

Hi Tom...I've been following you and Chasing Cars from the get go. This is the most honest and direct languaged review I've seen you do...and I find that incredibly refreshing. Well done mate...damn good job 👏 👍
Beautiful Ute, !!! I took one for a spin at the dealership and straight away bought one. It’s a reasonable vehicle.
Great review! Bought my X 3 months ago, just did 5,000kms service and added on roll cover and some other accessories. My wife and two kids love it! Of course me too!
Its good to see some of the cheaper brands getting some form of exposure, especially because of how much it does for the market, and maybe will show the bigger names in the industry and they can calm down on their price tiering, especially when there's companies charges $5000 to put a screen in which costs them a hundred dollars to produce and install
Totally agree. Here in Tunisia they charge 1000 Eur for a shitty screen in a peugeot? For what? it is a gimmick anyway.
That was one of your best reviews- objective with balance of pros and cons and relevant factual commentary on the current ute market- well done- my favourite review channel.
I disagree. I accidentally saw this. But his review is terrible. I wouldn't watch any of them. Absolutely no time to check the vehicle!!
I found problems in 2 mins. It's Chinese cheap for a reason.
@@ty4289 yeah, people are really going to listen to you with comments like that.
One thing you seriously missed is the fact that it does have 4 high mode. Press and hold the traction button to activate it. I wish any of the reviews i have seen would have read the manual.
Cross Country Expert mode isn't in the manual.
As Hambo said...it isn't in the manual. I discovered that feature in forums and confirmed by a dealer😐
I just bought Cannon x, can't wait to pick it up in a week. Just seen your review, it was very in depth compared to the other reviewers.
Good, fair review.
Thank you.
great review, i have this ute for two weeks, it is so much pleasure to drive and so much enjoyable the interior, great ute in the great price.
Great review. Very informative. Just test drove the L variant and I was very impressed for the price point. So much so, I've decided to buy one.
Great conclusion. Hopefully this will bring some downwards price competition to the ute market, instead of the race to see who can get away with the highest prices we have seen so far.
Thanks! And yes, I agree.
If you think Utes/Cars are expensive today you should look into how expensive care were back in the 80's 90's relative to the average wage.
Had cars been more expensive than they are today you will be happy to own 2nd hand, happy to repair (since the cost of replacement is much much higher) and the world will be better environmentally since people are willing to repair more.
Having these Chinese cars are not only making the pursuit of "NEW cars" the norm but also feeding the "Disposable mentality and life style" we now have.
There is a reason why the Disposable mentality is ingrained, that is because cheaper and cheaper replacement products are feeding that upbringing.
Point is if things are expensive they will be of higher quality, serviced, repaired, bought back to life and reused.
The military (Governments) never believed in the disposable mentality (refurbishing and retrofitting decades old planes, tanks etc not throwing and buying every 4-10 years) so should we.
@@crxdelsolsir plus we don't know anything about the quality of said vehicle. That remains to be seen in the 2 years after the warranty has expired.

For the LACK of investment the specs look pretty good Tom!🤣 A good mate of mine bought the new D-Max late last year. First thing I noticed was the lack of room in the back of it. I’m just on 6’ & my knees were up against the back of the driving seat. My mates only 5’9”. That’s a plus straight away for the GWM. Good review & honest.😎👍🏼
It makes a lot of sense indeed.
I don't think I'm a badge snob -- I currently own a Kia and a Hyundai, but have gone through the usual suspects as Mazda, Ford, Holden, Jeep, etc. I also thought Toyota's are boring but after 12 months of waiting, I'm soon going to be a RAV4 owner. Having said all that, I honestly didn't think I'd be interested in a Chinese brand but your review has completely changed my mind. I can totally see the value proposition in this truck. You're the first reviewer to mention that safety equipment are from the same suppliers as other brands -- that was my main concern and you've definitely addressed it. Well done! 👏🍻👍
Great review you have made up my mind in choosing the cannon x
One of my friends has one and loves it
Thanks chasing cars
Great review mate. I’ve had my cannon L for a few months now and put 4,000kms on it. Absolutely love it, looks great, drives great and is perfect for my job (tradie). 👌🏼👍🏼
@My Email main reason I went for L is price and I also like the analog dials on the speedo and rev gauge. But I do like the diamond stitch interior in the x. Awesome Ute either way 👍🏼
Great review, I think the service intervals are not weird. The first service is after the vehicle has been run in, change the oil great idea. As for the 12 month 10,000k service is better than 15000k service ask any diesel mechanic and most say 10,000 is a better interval. I used to do that with the Ranger that I had. The Chinese will eventually make a very good ute as good or better that the more expensive ones time will tell. This ute seems to be pretty good for the money, warranty is very good. Just one thing what was the GCM of the ute?
Hey thanks man!
I just bought one today! & your review further exemplified that i made a great choice & decision!
I will be running a high pressure cleaning business out of it, & I am stoked!

The reliability of a Triton ,the flexibility of motor, robust body and good overall dependability means I'm not looking for an alternative.......Mitsubishi quality is real.......and worth every penny

I watched this model being tested in South Africa. It was pit against the lowest model double cab Ford. Did you pick up any rattle?
I agree GWM Ute does what a Ute is suppose to do a simple agricultural vehicle we really need this in Jamaica 🇯🇲
I agree 100 percent. I remember in the early 2000s I saw some greatwall pickup trucks in Jamaica and I'm still seeing some of them on the roads today. I think the brand didn't take off in Jamaica because of the lack of after sales service.
This was a very helpful review. I'm tossing up between one of these and a SsangYong Muso.
Great, unbiased review. Thank you
Great review mate. I’m buying one 👍
I bought Cannon L in May. It's better than I expected. Love it!
Worth getting then? I’m seriously thinking about it
@@johnmichaels1413 Yes for me. I think it really depends on what you need the ute for. If you are a tradesman always having very heavy load, you might need more powerful ute. It is 2L diesel. I buy this ute because I need real 4X4 to go out for hunting sometimes. I also use it for normal daily drive. It’s powerful enough for me. It’s like driving normal car not a track. It has plenty USB port, even one power point. Cruise control is able to slow down or speed up to set speed automatically to keep the distance from the vehicle at the front. I am happy with this ute. I wish you choose the right ute for your situation. Good luck.

Solid review again guys! I hope they fix those little issues...sounds like a software update would solve most of them. Will you be reviewing/ comparing h6 to outlander perhaps? I'm really interested in these new comers. Good for the consumer. Thanks!
Great review. The GWM Ute might not be perfect but it’s pushes the expectations of what you can get for the price. Like you said, the established manufacturers who sell less equiped vehicles for much higher prices should take note. On the servicing intervals, perhaps this is a policy to ensure as these utes age they will be more frequently maintained giving people a sense of reliability despite the low entry price? The ZF gearbox, as found in the Amarok is excellent at engine breaking. Good choice GWM.
Just designed to keep the b*stards honest!
How does the gearbox break the engine? Surely "brake"?
You will find no mater what brand they put on major engine and driveline parts it's all made in China under license.
@@tonys8243 not really under licence. Many of these euro suppliers like Magna/ZF, Bosch, Valeo et al have set up shop in China, to provide for clients like the German brands who are growing increasingly dependent on China (and are building their cars there of course). The truth is that everyone who's anyone in the global car industry is in China trying to get a slice of that huge market and the synergies generated by that production ecosystem are part of what makes GWM capable of selling at these price points.
Here in Tunisia our climate is similar to your in Australia and we have the desert in the south where any 4x4 is put to its limits. The hilux is waaay overpriced!
Good review as always... No DAB+ also surprised to see plasticy bits at the underbody

@ chasing cars, It has 4H , press and hold traction control button to activate , its called cross country expert mode.
How interesting!
This segment of the market is so expensive because of the instant Tax write-offs available to business users. So its a distortion. Your conclusion was spot-on. Its a workhorse, not a luxury vehicle. And on that front I think you would be silly to spend more than 40K in this segment now this exists. Reminds me of what Mahindra is doing in the 4WD segment. Back to basics. Although this GWM doesn't look so basic. A friend of mine bought one of these and came over in it. I didn't look at it closely enough and assumed it was a Toyota somthing. Nice Ute.
The Foton Ute is more basic. Maybe less to go wrong, but all really unproven yet on the market.
Great review cheers but the car you were reviewing is actually the top spec X as that spec is the only one with telescopic steering mount, wireless phone charger & the cheq design on the doors. I’m going to get a new ute the end of this year and your review helps so thanks mate
Yep, it’s the X! Sorry if any references to L remained in.
Loving your reviews 👍👍👍👍👍
Good review mate.
Thanks Max.
The best review I have seen in a long time, great work 👍 I don’t get the attraction to these vehicles unless your a tradie and need a work vehicle that doubles as a family car. They are so compromised and not even that practical. These days we don’t have a lot of choice though as you just can’t buy car based falcon and Holden utes anymore which we’re cheaper, preformed better and had better passive safety. I think Ford Australia missed a massive opportunity to build a dual cab based on the territory. It would have had car like handling and safety while meeting the tradie brief. The cost of dual cabs is insane, some climbing over $80k!
Loading up with bikes hanging over the tailgate, trips to Bunnings, hard tonneau with roof rails, canopy with sliding cabinets, they're flexible vehicles if you actually use them for more than a trip to Coles.
They make more sense when you consider their genuine off road ability .
Compromised OR the best of both worlds?
Good and objective review !! got a brand new for work and still trying to understand the front panel. ansd cruise control !! but Good Ute after all
I just bought one (Cannon X 2022) and signed contract literally 5 mins ago.. Went with it because it's just way cheaper than the big 3. Was originally going for the Hilux SR5 but a saving of 15K will allow me to mod the the Cannon X to my liking.. Hopefully this wasn't a mistake or I'll have you to blame for the very convincing review 😁
You’re cheap 😂 you should have got the hilux like 99% of aussies would do
Hi great review
Did you mention the diff lock at that price point
I’ve owned triton hilux and rodeo
The GWM cabin is incredible
I cant believe the mid range one is $35k drive away
Its unbelievable and untrue. $38,990 for mid spec was quoted at 2 mins in. Just over $4k cheaper than my new GLX-R Triton will roll out of the showroom. :-)
That’s not the list price of Triton - we don’t take into account negotiation. Equally, you could potentially negotiate a further chunk off the GWM. That’s why we make our price comparisons fair.
I can. The 2 owners of GWM Cannons I have spoken to both have had constant issues, with electronics especially. The warranty is apparently quite good. At least. Anyone who is not looking to buy a bucket of problems should avoid all GWM products like the plague.
two weeks before the review, GWM announced an ECU retune service campaign to address the common complaint about a touchy throttle and power coming out fully too fast instead of linear with the accelerator pad depth. actually some people would add a throttle controller to achieve this "sensitive throttle". so all depends on your driving habit. however GWM is listening, very good.
I like my power coming out fully
You didn't mention which model you would recommend???....
So what is the recommendation out of the three????
Those 18” wheels just look totally inadequate on a truck that big. So hard to judge these vehicles when they’re unloaded but appreciate the difficulties with lockdown. Mind you Bunnings was open:) I’d also like to see how they hold up for rust, but certainly it’s cheap. Very good review.
Definitely on the shopping list next time around assuming accessories like bullbars etc are available.
there must be something about this vehicle because i live in regional NSW and seeing lots of them on the road, not a mention of the best sold cars lists though. Great review Tom.
hola, tu camioneta tiene estacionamiento asistido? (Hello, does your van have assisted parking?)

As a QA Engineer for the last 30+ years I have seen the Chinese products improve to the point that they look very very good. The perception of Quality and finesse is now addressed and most people will not be able to tell the difference between established brands and a Chinese made Ute. What people don’t see is what goes into buildings these cars. Who provides the parts, how the rejects are treated what they do with them? Are they disposed ethically with the regulations? What are the workers been payed and the list goes on. Perhaps the worst problem about any Chinese product is that what they say is usually not what will happen and what will they do, as it has been proven with anything else that comes out of China. Good review as always.

Very true, objective, unbiased and fair analysis. I'll give this overall analysis 10 x "likes" if I can. Being made in China with a low price tag does not necessarily mean that it is of poor quality. Anyone owns one of these will definitely agree with me.

Shopping for bits on Wish..! Love it. Spot on. But hey this is a great review, I'd buy one for certain applications but I'd prefer the Amarok V6 for everyday most of the time tasks and comfort. The-Dmax is the new long term king, the Hilux fading slowly into the sunset and the new Rangers coming soon promise to own the market while we see the others consolidating, like Triton to Nissan, Mazda to D-Max and Amarok to Ranger.
Excellent video and analysis, buy the GWM Ute, visit with it to the south of Chile, Nahuelbuta National Park, winter season, I walked mud roads that covered the wheels, it is a beast and very agile, it has no comparison is much better interior or exterior than the other brands,
the road to the park is aggressive in curves, water and mud perches, the truck managed to board obstacles that I didn't think I would achieve, it wasn't necessary to press the 4L button, this machine it will be a headache for ford, nissan, chevrolet and other brands.
You obviously have never had a decent vehicle most of the others are much better 😄
Great review Tom! Not a big issue, but I think from a marketing point of view, GWM would be better to just drop the 'Ute' tag and go with Cannon, so as in a GWM Cannon ute. I've heard a few people refer to these as just Cannons anyway, so I don't think the 'Cannon' name would be too much of an issue for the Australian market.
Not that I'm a ute guy and probably would never buy one, unless Ford Australia decides to bring in the Maverick, or Renault brings in the Duster Oroch, I'd have no problem buying one of these.
it is just called the gwm cannon it's aussies that have thrown the word "ute" into the name
@@tsv83rotors - Actually, in Australia it's official name is GWM Ute, Cannon is used as a trim level/spec name, which is mentioned at the beginning of this clip. There is the GWM Ute Cannon, the GWM Ute Cannon-L and the GWM Ute Cannon-X.

The volume of Chinese made goods in the household concerns me. Why does China practically have a monopoly on production? I thought free market economics was meant to remove monopolies. Now we don't have much choice but to buy from China. It's very much our own governments fault that this has happened.
To answer your comment more personally, I order and own mostly things made in other countries even if they are more than double the price of Chinese goods. I decided to choose this lifestyle due to constant frustrations with Chinese products either breaking prematurely, being poorly designed or being a downright scam because it didn't work at all. I would be a fool to continue buying from there after so many times being a fool. Liked the review, certainly unbiased, but there's a whole lot more to vehicles that purchase price. One of them is longevity and whether they need to have parts replaced on a regular basis. The only way to tell if a vehicle is any good is a long term review and that obviously takes time. A good reason they are cheap is that they are relatively new to the market and brand awareness again takes time. I personally have just purchased a 2021 Isuzu Dmax and I love it. As with any vehicle its got things I dont like but they are only minor, so will just learn to live with it. Others have commented here that those at the top are over priced and certainly thats correct, they will continue to be that high so long as people just walk into a dealer and just buy them. Maybe something like the GWM, LDV, etc needs to become more popular for prices to drop.

Would be great to see long term reviews of the same vehicle especially since buyers are keeping their vehicles for longer and are far more dependent on the reliability and durability…
I agree with your summation. However, my biggest concern would be the gamble on resale value. Time will tell if the gamble pays off or not....
7 year warranty. The way GMW is going, reputation and price will only go up.
I presume the the resale loss will be similar at most to big brands the amount i mean as those command a lot higher pruce initially, but you paid a lot less in the first place
The story is like the korean cars when they first. Appear years ago
@@billcatopodis9176 I imagine it would command a reasonable resale in 5 years time if it has 2 years of warranty left for the next owner!
@@hambo76 It definitely will help as GWM who is growing so quickly is more likely to honour it than poor old Ssangyong. What has your experience with customer service been so far? Have you had any niggling issues and if so, how have they been dealt with?
I've had my Cannon X for just over 3 months now and I honestly can't fault it at all. When considering value-for-money, it's truly at the top. Not even the LDV can beat it. I really appreciate this review as it seems like the most honest and balanced one out of all the publications so far. Also, I'm surprised that they gave you a top-spec Cannon X for your review when everyone else got the mid-spec Cannon L. I think someone at GWM made a mistake there. But seriously, if you're in the market for a new 4x4 dual-cab ute, take a look at the Cannon X as it's definitely worth considering.
how does it compare to the LDV ? look like it has more power
@@Wonka_Tonka Yep it's got more power, better safety, better fuel economy, better quality parts (transmission from ZF, 4x4 system from Borg Warner, safety systems from Bosch) and it isn't prone to overheating (unlike the LDV).
I echo your comments such that I purchased a Cannon X after taking a look at and test drove an LDV T60 Luxe model. I paid a bit more but it was so worth it. That 7 year warranty with unlimited kms and 5 years roadside assist cinched the deal for me. I'm looking forward to picking it up soon.
@John Winzil Please.... What's your vehicle channel so we can watch the review you did of the Cannon X and see your supporting evidence for your comment? .......... Pffssst!!!
@John Winzil Yeah.... We're smart enough to know your just a pissed off Ranger Raptor owner who, after watching this video, realised he paid too much for it.
