    Great video of an old man playing great golf on a smashing course.
    Been trying to get my lower body working better as you showed your drill earlier. Last Saturday I had a brilliant round with my eldest grandson. We played betterball and scored 82 on a par 72. I hit 14 drives, duffed one but the rest were much longer than I normally get because I was activating my lower body much better. They were straight too. However, as you suggested it has mucked up some of my iron shots, generally pull left. If our iron play and putting had been on song we would have got close to 72. So many thanks for the drill, it has really helped. Stay safe.

      Wow that's great Colin. That's a good knock. I've been doing some stretching and it hurts afterwards! That drill is a bit of a stretch. If I can find someone professional who can show us some exercises I will do it. I don't have the qualifications to advise on exercises. I will ask in the Pro shop.

      The Hairy Golfer it would be a good idea to do some exercises. I use some elastic band material for some stretching exercises. I got the band and exercises from a physio when I had problems with my shoulder and neck. The only issue for me is that the exercises are not golf specific.

      The driving was good downwind, a little short into the wind. The 6 iron was a bit thin LOL But it ended in the right place. Hit it thin to win.

    That's a great par on 13!!! As you say, Portmore is a hidden gem with lots of interesting holes, particularly on the back 9. I'm surprised that the greens were slow as Josh usually keeps them quite short. Unlucky on 18 but 74 is a great score round there. Well done!

      I think they were just a bit behind after lock down. You have to cut it down to normal length in a few bites I've been told. 13 was lucky. I ended up in the bunker but they were all GUR and the little pitch wasn't as close as I wanted. I will go back there hopefully with the lads.

    WHAT AN EGALE ON 11!!! I count it as an eagle!! Great job right there. In general, really good short game. That shot over the bunker on 13 - those shots make me nervous and way too often I end up right in the beach haha

      I did a video on chipping over a bunker. Stick an umbrella in the gound 15 yards away and practice hitting shots to it from the rough. Then go back to chipping over the bunker.

    Seems like every course you play its windy as hell. Your killing me with your quotes, "🐘 testicles" "ice cream truck"😂😂😂. Nice eagle on that short par 5! You have to go with want the card says. You make this game look so easy. Great views out there on the back 9. Well done Simon!

      @thehairygolfer  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Mark, I played a par 4 2 holes later that was longer! LOL My counter weight for the tripod is grey and heavy, just like an elephant testicle....I guess.
      The ice cream truck is an old joke from the 70's possibly older than that. Some good views, you can't quite see the sea but it's not far away. You will see the sea on every hole at Ilfracombe as it's right on the coast and high up.

  • @malthuswasright

    If the card says par 5, then an eagle it is. Excellent work.

    • @thehairygolfer
      @thehairygolfer  4 роки тому

      But it was shorter than the next par 4 LOL! I know some courses have short par 5's because of the hazards you just have to lay up unless you're Bubba or DJ. But 426? I'm not so sure.

      It was a very short par 5 I think you will agree. I played St Andrews 2000 in Thailand and it has 2 par 6's of 700 yards. I birdied them both the last time I played. Driver, 3 wood, 3wood, chip and putt. One of the par 5's was 490 and I birdied that one as well. Shame about some of the other holes........LOL

      It is good. They do an X version as well. It does spin more off a wedge too. You guys have a launch monitor so you could check that. It's supposed to be 3 yards longer off the driver too with a robot. I don't know about the USA but it's about 31% cheaper on Amazon here.

    This is my local course, you could even see my flat in some of the footage! I played golf from 8-19 years old in Birmingham but only took it back up again in February, at the ripe old age of 38. I have only played the pitch and putt once and the back 9 once. I got an 8 on every hole on the back 9, it was my first time swinging a club in 19 years - I hadn't even hit balls at the range! I was using some 30-year-old+ Wilson blue ridge 'blades,' 20-year-old Donnay balls (I lost 8 and nearly killed a duck on the 17th) plus a Wilson titanium driver for the first time too (I used to hit a Dunlop driver 300+ yards... with a big slice haha). The pitch and putt was not much better but I did get a bogey, a few doubles, and nothing over 7... although I did snap hook one into the main road... there was a beep but no damage was done thankfully. I am a bit nervous about going out on the course still (I am awaiting eye surgery to fix a squint which isn't helping and I have an anxiety disorder) so have mostly stuck to the range to test out and gap my new clubs (Wilson D350 irons and Benross woods) but I have been too anxious to even do that lately. I am on disability for my anxiety at the moment and often the hardest part is my confidence to get out on the course (which I think about doing daily, I have absolutely fallen in love with the game again!), let alone understanding the holes while out there. Watching you play Portmore has given me a better understanding of what I need to do while out there, so thank you for that! Hopefully, this will get me out there more often, I have most days free to play so the only thing stopping me is myself, at the very least I will get back down the range (they have top tracer now!) until I find a willing victim to play a round with me. The guy who got me back into it has been in Australia for 3 months, I am not surprised after the round I put in haha. Thank you again for the video(s)!

      Hello Dave, thanks for writing. I understand the anxiety as I am Aspergers. I love to play golf on my own so i have no social challenges. If I book a tee time and somebody joins me I panic. I never used to book tee times because of that, I would hang around in the car park and wait for the 1st tee to be clear. Or simply go practice after work instead. Try talking to a camera with people around you! I crap myself!
      Underneath your problems there is still a golfer waiting to re-appear. You may no longer have the body to hit those 300 yarders but there is a golfers mind. You will get it back. If i had advice for you it would be to discover your short game first. That way no matter what happens with the long game you can make a score at the end of a hole. Getting up and down gives me more smiles than hitting a decent 5 iron.
      I wish you well on your journey. Simon

      @@thehairygolfer Thanks for writing back. Oh wow, I never would have guessed Aspergers! They were going to test me for ASD as they/we think that is really what my current diagnosis is but after a year wait I canceled the test appointment in favour of a navy job (which I passed for but didn't get due to my mental health history... lol). I am doing the same thing as you used to do, only playing on weekdays when it is quiet so I know that feeling well. I haven't even managed that for the past month as I said I would buy a membership in April but couldn't afford it. I know they don't mind, and most likely don't even remember me saying it but that kind of social anxiety really gets to me. If I could just pay and play without ever speaking to anyone I would be up there daily probably and hanging around waiting for an empty first tee like you used to do :)
      I appreciate what you have overcome to do these videos. I was going to Vlog a southwest coastal path through-hike once, and even got as far as buying the camera for it but the thought of actually recording and uploading the video stopped me. It is easier once you have done it a few times, it is just that initial first step, or it is that way for me anyway. I had a complete breakdown on my first ever round because my playing partner (my mum's friend) wanted to play fast and we were then let through by a 4-ball... it was all downhill from there, full-on anxiety attack coupled with carrying a bag up and down those hills while fat. I definitely don't have the body I had at 19 lol. Gym and diet are already underway, I had spent literally 2 years barely getting out of bed before this and was quite a gym addict and healthy before. To the point I almost tried to become a personal trainer after the Navy rejection.
      Great advice! I often fantasise about spending hours upon hours on the putting green and practicing my chipping but as of yet I have been too anxious to even ask if I am allowed! Again, I know it is daft to not just ask. The garden will have to do for another week yet. I will have saved (stopped buying range finders, etc...) the membership fee by then so can get back down there and on the course! I shall indulge in your other videos until then. I might pick up a few tips on dealing with the anxiety just by watching. I have watched a lot of golfing channels from golf mates to rick shields but now I know you go through a lot of what I encounter when trying to play I may get more from your videos. Thank you again for making them!

      @@vhkdave3284 Hello again Dave. My love of the game makes me play and trying to be the best I can. I do not know how hard it is for you with the panic attacks. I'm fine on my own, I'm fine with a very few close friends, I'm fine with women as there doesn't seem to be any peer pressure. With strangers I'm hopeless. Rooms full of people scare me sometimes.
      If I go to a concert I'm fine. If I'm just in a room full of people listening to a lecture from a manager at work I sometimes just have to get out of the room. Pure panic.
      It took me a very long time to get used to this camera. And talking to it, even with nobody else there. I could not do what others do and I certainly couldn't do the fake banter that others do. The over the top presentation. I'm never going to get more than a couple of thousand people watching no matter how long I try. I don't mind. If nothing else this was just another hurdle that had to be climbed. My Wife thinks I'm amazing for trying this and for getting better at this. That's all I need.
      I hope you conquer your fears and get to play this game you love. Best. Simon

      @thehairygolfer  4 роки тому

      Hi Eddie, I have had lessons since I was 14 and have a bunch of lessons every year, this year somewhat interrupted, I've got 2 of 6 still to have. I do have an ugly swing with a ruined body so whatever lessons I have revolve around trying to get my movements more consistant rather than 'correct'. I'm a self taught pitcher, chipper and putter though. I used to spend a lot of time fiddling around with ball position, loft, open or closed face etc to see what happens if I do this or this.

    BAH! An eagle is an eagle!! However having an uphill long par 4 afterwards doesn’t appear to make a lot of sense. That Mizuno ball has got to spin waaaay more than the Pro V1!

    • @thehairygolfer
      @thehairygolfer  4 роки тому +1

      According to my golf spy it's 3 yards longer off the driver (robot testing), 1.5 yards longer on the 7 iron, 1 yard shorter on a wedge but has more backspin. Which is visible even on my level of swingspeed. But it not as straight on the driver. Personally the difference I found was the new ProV1 feels a little harder chipping and putting. Plus of course the Mizuno is heavily discounted on line by 25%
      Yes, 2 holes later I play a par 4 20 yards longer and playing longer. How would you like the 580 yarder into 3 clubs of wind? 3W third shot from 193? I'd normally hit that club 230 and higher than my back foot shot. It wasn't a real eagle. Par 5's start from 485 not 426.
