      I can sort of understand their point of view (although not their rudeness) - when someone has a great technique for anything, why give it away if you can sell it? BUT I gotta say that as someone who has watched probably HUNDREDS of training and how to videos from EVERY kind of dog trainer, being duped into thinking wow, they're really kind to dogs (only to find out that they're not really that kind and their methods do promote anxiety and negative feelings from the dogs) - Your tutorials and training videos FAR EXCEED EVERY OTHER DOG TRAINER OUT THERE and it's only by being able to WATCH your methods, and compare them to others, that I realise this. Otherwise, you're just a dog trainer amid THOUSANDS, and what would make you stand out? How would I know how good you are if I hadn't watched all these other thousands of training videos by other much lesser dog trainers, and then watched yours - how would I know the difference? How would I know what force free really was?
      If I hadn't watched every single video you've made, I don't think I'd know the difference between a lot of them and YOUR truly Force Free method. I absolutely LOVE your style, the way you explain everything SO clearly, and you use analogies that I TOTALLY understand! Please PLEASE PLEASE don't stop making these tutorials, they are fantastic, YOUR cruelty free, force free, GENTLE methods have changed the way I interact with my foster dogs and I really think you are the best there is. I was watching another trainer's videos (initials DD, won't say anything more than that) - watching him talk about how great he was, etc., and actually signed up for a "reactivity webinar" (as my foster dog is leash reactive) - I was really excited because I HAD thought he was good - but that hour long webinar just went through his five golden rules of dog training, didn't touch on reactivity (the only reason I had signed up) and the rest of the time was spent promoting and marketing the courses we should buy, and for DAYS afterwards, I was bombarded with emails on "buy the course, before the discount runs out" - and that's when I did more research on this particular trainer, only to find lots of others felt the same way - their methods did introduce negative reinforcement and anxiety BUT THE ONLY REASON I KNEW THIS WAS BECAUSE I HAD WATCHED YOUR VIDEOS AND KNEW THE DIFFERENCE!!!!! If I had NOT watched your videos, I most likely wouldn't have been so aware of the differences in treatments, and how isolating a dog when they do something you don't like - THAT'S NOT KIND TO THE DOG!!! YOUR method are 100% kind to the dog and prove that you don't need shock collars or prong collars or ANYTHING that might cause distress or discomfort to the dog - YOU TOTALLY RULE AND I PLEAD WITH YOU, DON'T STOP POSTING YOUR VIDEOS, THEY ARE THE BACKBONE NOW TO WHAT I DO WITH MY FOSTER DOGS, when I rehabilitate them and get them ready for adoption. All the work you do is fantastic and I am your number one fan.

    I love your outlook on this, true kindness. I knew a human psychologist like this once he was always distressed by the fact that often those that needed help most simply couldn't afford it and he adjusted his payment system to help all ,even sometimes accepting a meal or service as payment. We all need to make a living absolutely,but the world is a better place when we show a little kindness and understanding. 🙏❤️

      Thank you! I’m definitely not trying to fully replace 1:1 training with these videos😊 However, I think there are a lot of “pre-skills” and “pre-knowledge” that are easy to learn from videos and that make 1:1 training way more effective. I’m glad you’ve found a way to combine the two with a trainer!

    Like you noted in this clip, there is sadly still a significant imbalance in the number of force free vs. “balanced” training videos available so I think it’s super important to have free FF tutorials just to educate people that these methods exist. I’m a first time dog owner and I’ve done two group puppy/adolescent classes with my dog (so I’ve definitely paid for training) but we still have some issues to address and as much as I’d like to, I just don’t have the money, time or access to a suitable trainer to do private lessons for everything. I’ve checked out so many resources on YT and I’ve lost count of the number of times I started watching a training video only for the person to start yanking the dog around or talking about prong/e-collars. I just can’t imagine treating my sweet girl that way, but it’s like for every one FF training channel there are 4-5 balanced training channels on YT, and often it’s not even immediately clear what methods they use, so it’s easy for people to think that this is the best or even the only way to train!
    I think you’re doing an amazing job and on top of everything I just really like the vibe you give off with the dogs, the way you present your work and how you edit your videos - in fact I’d say yours is my fav dog-related channel out there. Sorry for the overlong comment, just wanted to express my gratitude and support. Also PS, I have the same zip-up hoodie @1:20 haha!

      Thank you so much for this comment 🙂 I'm so happy to be your fav dog channel! Wow ♥ And I agree: there's so much yank & crank content & people claiming dogs "need" those methods. I want to show that's not true. And I LOVE that zip up sweater hahaha.

    • @ZaryaTheLaika
      @ZaryaTheLaika 5 місяців тому +1

      Yeah. I wish most of the "balanced" trainers put a disclaimer the tools and methods they use are banned in a few countries. The problem with bilingualism is American (and to a lesser extent UK) culture dominates everything.

    • @ZaryaTheLaika
      @ZaryaTheLaika 5 місяців тому

      And as a reference venomous keepers in the reptile hobby put up a disclaimer only experienced people should be handling dangerous animals. And they do this because it's very easy to get sued or have your hobby banned if an inexperienced person copies what they see

    • @ZaryaTheLaika
      @ZaryaTheLaika 5 місяців тому

      Made the mistake of looking up German-specific dog training examinations and somehow US compulsion training videos still dominates search, even though those methods are banned in Germany and German trainers don't demo them

    Your videos are invaluable free resources, testaments to the excellence of your paid services, and ambassadors for the force-free training industry. I believe those who are looking to buy dog training courses will be encouraged by the excellence of your UA-cams to seek out your personal services or buy any online courses you produce. And those who cannot afford it have the benefit of these wonderful tutorials reaching many more dogs and their people. It is a win-win and I think perhaps the trainers who worry about giving too much away forget what it took to learn their level of skill.

    You are awesome! I love that you’re doing this. I haven’t found any truly force free trainers in my area (North County San Diego). I’ve asked our vet for recommendations, and was disappointed with the two they recommended. I’ve asked dog owners, and was referred to a monster with no dog training credentials. I can afford a trainer; I just haven’t found one that I trust with my very sensitive, sweet GSD.
    Thank you so much for helping people like me.

      To address your question:
      No, I don’t think that free tutorials hurt the industry. K9Tay has been recommending you and Glasgow Dog Training. She’s FF, and Glasgow is now FF, but formerly was not. These free resources save us from the fake FF trainers, and the bullies, like the one nearby (the whale trainer). Seeing real FF, actually working, after what our former trainer did to my dog is necessary to educate us. I would absolutely hire a real FF trainer, but until I can find one, your videos have helped a lot. Now I know what to look for when considering a trainer. Thank you again.

      Thank you for saying that! I actually hope that's a big thing my videos do: encourage people to find qualified & kind trainers if they do want 1:1 help. I want to show how training can (and in my opinion SHOULD) look 🙂

    So kind like the piracy debate. People pirate because they're not in great financial situations and there's no scaling option available to them. Not because they want to steal

  • @daveford7666
    @daveford7666 5 місяців тому +2

    I have also heard "If you can't afford training you shouldn't own a dog" type of comments. Being in a financial situation where hiring a trainer is out of my reach (74 yrs old living on social security income) thank you for putting FF within the reach of those of us in that situation. Everyone who wants one should have a dog regardless of economic status. In fact lower income people may "need" the companionship more than most. "Cheapen the training industry" .. not a chance. As you mentioned there is a plethora of videos on how to hurt your dog to get it to do what you want. More FF trainers like yourself need to be putting up content. It doesn't have to be full blown training courses, but little tips that show how FF works will IMO only increase interest from the every day dog owner who doesn't have a clue about training and behavior. Thank you !!

    • @happyhoundsdogtraining
      @happyhoundsdogtraining  5 місяців тому +2

      I’ve heard that statement too and disagree heavily. Some of my absolute best clients have been ones where I’ve offered discounted training due to their situation. Their commitment and love for their dog was unreal! ❤️ Plus, I wouldn’t have qualified as a fit dog guardian most of my life according to that rule. I’m so glad you feel the videos and content help rather than hurt anything!

    • @Dahlily
      @Dahlily 5 місяців тому +1

      So true! And speaking from experience, if committed dog guardians do have expendable income, the free content wont keep them from investing in a more tailored training session with an awesome trainer 😊 so I can't see how it "cheapens" the industry.

    Hey it’s Katie here from Grateful Sun Tarot. Some weird number sht comes up whenever I try to comment. Anyways I love your videos and tutorials. Having previously only been exposed to so called balanced training and seeing it everywhere I was so happy to find you on Instagram. I could see how others did get results however I just couldn’t imagine choking my puppy into “good” behaviour. I and I’m sure others appreciate so much the content you put out. If we weren’t 3 provinces away I wouldn’t hesitate to bring our Daisy to you as she does challenge us at times. But I’ve learned so much and we’ve gone from questioning our decision to get a dog to really enjoying a great quality of life with her. …. There’s still work to be done!! 😂Looking forward to the new Louie videos!😂. Please keep doing what you’re doing like you said the more Force Free content out there the more people like myself will see there are better ways to build healthy relationships with our dogs. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!💜

    I for one (and my good boy Bruce for two) am eternally grateful for your videos. I only found them a few days ago and have been binge watching them over and over again. As a result of your videos I have managed my first successful walk with Bruce in over 18 months where we managed to keep him under threshold when faced with a trigger. This is a massive step as only days ago I was so close to giving up and finding a new home for him. I have spent hundreds of pounds on trainers/behaviourists and none have born the success and hope for the future that you have. Your unedited walks are especially helpful as they are obviously real situations rather than staged encounters. Please never stop doing what you are doing!
    Plus. Providing useful and genuine content such as this is much more likely to lead me to pay for your online courses as I have more confidence that the content will be useful. There are so many of these available now that this extra level of free info will almost certainly lead to your courses being popular.
    Thank you again!

    As someone who pays for trainers to come onto my home, buys online content, and watches free content, I appreciate free positive reinforcement training videos because it sets expectations. I can't evaluate a trainer I plan to pay to come into my home without knowing what good training looks like. I may not be able to build a training planing plan or properly identify where a good split should go, but after watching many hours of good training, I can see it and ask about it.

    I have purchased this guild and I’m working on the leave it cue and treat value now. Hoping to begin the training today inside. My puppy is a 12 week old golden doodle. My struggles are she bites the leash the minute I clip it on through the whole walk. I’m thinking with using your training guide that might go away on its own since she’s a young puppy. The other struggle I’m having is she tries to play (by nipping and barking continually) with my older smaller dog. How do I protect my older dog and not punish my puppy. Thank you! Your videos are sooooo helpful! God Bless!!

    • @happyhoundsdogtraining
      @happyhoundsdogtraining  2 місяці тому

      Congrats on the new puppy!! That's such a fun but also overwhelming age 😂♥ For the leash biting: Almost all young pups do this (they like having something in their mouth), but it's important it never gets accidentally rewarded because that's when it becomes a longer term behaviour. With puppies, one of the hugest rewards is attention or anything resembling play, so if we make a big fuss trying to get the leash back they're definitely see that as a reward. My two favourite ways of addressing leash biting are to 1) simply ask for a few easy cues that the pup already knows to distract them. Sit followed by shake a paw (then reward) works great because the combo usually makes them drop the leash from their mouth without thinking. I'll link a tutorial here for how I quickly taught little Ahsoka to shake a paw: ua-cam.com/video/v7_z9B8dXa0/v-deo.html. And 2) If the leash biting is more persistent, I actually clip on 2 leashes for a short while. Whenever the dog bites one, I drop that leash like a limp noodle and keep walking them on the secondary leash. This makes the leash in their mouth really boring, and removes any sort of reward from the behaviour. As soon as they drop the leash, silently pick it up and continue on (that way you always have 2 leashes and can drop one at any time). I'll admit its pretty annoying to do this for a few days haha, but it works great!.
      For the overly exuberant play with your older dog, I'll often keep young pups harnessed and leashed during play times so that I can silently step in (by walking my hands up the leash) when they've taken things too far, remove them from play for a minute or so, then let them try again. Depending on the area you live I'd also suggest looking into things called puppy socials. They're usually 30-60 minutes and a group of pups that play together under both their guardian and a trainers supervision. Then the trainer can help you pinpoint when your pup is going too far!

    I’m incredibly grateful for your dedication to improving the lives of dogs and their owners.
    I don’t think that just by watching your videos I can reach your professional level or achieve the enormous experience you’ve gained working with dogs.
    When I try to follow your advice, I can clearly see how much better I’m getting in my interactions with my dog, but it’s still nowhere close to what you can achieve in your videos. So I don’t think you cheapen the efforts of other dog trainers, rather, you make the value of professional guidance even more oblivius, especially for dogs that require specialized help. And if someone has the means to hire a professional trainer and wants the best for their dog, it’s clear from your videos that doing so can only help improve both their and their dog’s lives.
    Also, I completely agree; there are so many popular dog training channels that endorse choke collars, yelling at the dog louder to get results, and being the “alpha” for your dog, that finding your channel was a real joy. I can’t express enough gratitude for the positive impact your teachings have had on us.

    Minor gripe, but I do wish Robert Milner is more popular than Standing Stone Kennel or some of the other big gundog channels in the US.
    There are UK-based gundog channels which are rewards-based, but for some reason the video uploaders keep privating their video tutorials and sessions.

      I don’t know either of those names, but if they’re privating videos after release I wonder if they’re being trolled? 😕 UA-cam comments can be brutal.

      @@happyhoundsdogtraining Ah, Milner is one of the first professional dog-trainers in sporting dog world to say e-collars should be banned.
      "Expert Dog Trainer Robert Milner Says Heck No to Shock Collars", Shotgun Life, 2013. He has been campaigning against ecollars longer than that (since 9/11 or Hurricane Katrina) if you go through his Fetchpup website (it's now down, and need to be accessed through Wayback Machine/Internet Archive)

      @@happyhoundsdogtraining There's also "There is an Elephant in the Room" in American Wildfowler magazine which is republished for free (with permission) on the Canadian kennel Doindogs's website.
      But yeah, whenever I look hunting dog stuff in English... Standing Stone always at top of search results. And there's some really old-school stuff on that channel like forced-fetch with toe-hitch and stuff.

      @@happyhoundsdogtraining Gripe is only minor because I know fans of compulsion trainers always point to gundog trainers and U.S. police/military trainers even though that stuff is no longer practiced in the UK, New Zealand, Norway, Finland etc.
      And I don't see names like Pippa Mattinson or Robert Milner on UA-cam. I remember those names from the old blogging days when people used to read more than watch videos.

      Just want to say, I'm glad you changed your stance about offleash dogs and ecollars. I've never used one even though I have dogs from hunting lines.
      The pro-ecollar person you interviewed for your podcast literally did not believe me that hunters are required of having perfect control of their dogs (to keep good relation with landowners) without using ecollars in a lot of places in Europe either because of the law or because they're unable to access ecollars for financial reasons (eg. Russia).

      @@ZaryaTheLaika That's so interesting! I didn't know that. My dogs and I are glad that I learned the harms of ecollars as well 😀

      @@theoutdoorminimalist Yeah, people tend to take dog-training more seriously if you explain consequences like "if you don't train your dog to be good around livestock, then landowners won't give permission to be on their property" or "if you don't control your dogs during the reindeer breeding and foraging seasons when you're visiting from the south, Sami people will pursue their Indigenous rights to a traditional homeland more strongly. So you should be good land steward as long you're guests on their lands"
