I used to play, everyone would always yell cup check, then theyd pretend hit you really hard but right before contact they stop.
I play lacrosse but there called the same thing

When I was a kid, a long time ago I had the same situation. All our softball teams sucked. But one team stood out. They always won, and were considered the “elite” team. And they were really good.
The coach on that team was short, angry, and just abusive. He was INTENSE! Scary, downright terrifying to a 12 year old like me. All of my friends joined his team, and he asked my parents if I could join.
They were absolutely against it! They had seen him cuss at kids, and explode in rage. (This was the 70s by the way).
I griped to anyone who’d listen how upset I was at not joining the elite team, but in all honesty I WAS GLAD that I didn’t get to join. My friends didn’t have fun anymore. It became like a job!
Plus they got cussed at...ALOT!
And I mentioned before, it was scary to even watch one of his games.
That little man was one of the angriest people I ever met. In today’s world he would have been banned from baseball entirely...😂
And yet, by your own admition, he trained champions.
