Interesting to hear your assessment from a somewhat outsider to Metazoo point of view but also an insider for gaming in general. Thanks for putting this out. I'm a huge Metazoo fan and a collector... In the next 6 weeks to 6 month period I will likely be picking up product just because I like it and would love to have more. I'd like to get some items that have have otherwise been out of reach for me up to now. and complete a few sets I've not messed with much yet.

I suspect the next few weeks will be filled with offloading of product and the cheapest you’ll see things. If you’re looking to grow the collection, might be a good time to do it but I’d just say to grow it for fun and your own collecting and not as any sort of investment. Cards are notoriously illiquid assets. Selling them is just so much harder than buying them. Have fun!

@@boardmatt Neopets had a good run and it was an organic game. There was no stonking, investing or any of the money BS involved in some of those games from back then. MZ was built on the concept of dollar signs and that your MZ stuff is going to be worth millions. Even older games like star wars had people organically interested. MZ could not even pay the tournament prizes for their players. That's how bad their brand is. The news is going to come out they pocketed the money and it's going to leave an awful taste for those who believed in the brand.

It’s usually players that drive community revivals, followed by the collectors who limp in after there’s a bit more activity. I never played the game, so no idea if it was actually an enjoyable play experience.

for now, the only cards that would hold value are the collabs (Rudy/Wubby/Hello Kitty etc.) and early KS chasers (memento of a big oopsie - emphasis on meme). then here comes the dilemma, will you dump your stocks to recoup your losses or HODL for the future hoping for the IP to be brought back for the next pump.

As for someone buying and revitalizing the IP, metazoo doesn’t own the characters of mothman, Loveland frogman or any of the other cryptid characters unfortunately, so I think best we will see is an homage maybe ? Something in a similar vein? All I know is I can finally go start looking for hiroquest cards since they will drop now.
You could be right there. Three years isn’t a long time in the grand scheme of things, especially when two of those were during Covid. I think in the mid-term it will hold some value. From my understanding Metazoo failed due to incompetence at the top. Shame, even though i only collect yugioh and pokemon it was fun to have Metazoo around while it lasted

There are plenty of dead TCGs we can look at as examples of never regaining any level of noticeable popularity. I don’t think that prediction is based on any data or logic, just emotion which is what drove the fomo hype bubble during the pandemic.
Absolutely true. Most games don’t regain their popularity but most also will see an increase from the tremendous drop after going out of print. We’re about to be in $20 booster box territory here. Additionally… collectible markets don’t really ever follow logic or data, they follow emotions and fomo. They’re quintessential Veblen goods. The more they go up, the more people want them!

Will 50-60 year old men want to buy cards in their retirement years or spend their funds wisely? As you know MZ customer base average age is closer to 40 than 18. Very little nostalgia in it imo, only scorn and disgust similar to how Beanie Baby “investors” felt.
You make a good point. Metazoo isn’t back by real IP and there’s an older “investor” demographic. I truly never saw a single soul playing the game. That’s also usually quite bad for long term stability.
I don't think it is dead yet, it is inevitable that someone thinks they can make it work and buys it and has to pay the outstanding bills. Waddell had this all planned from the start. This is a trend that I have seen already in video games, come up with a good idea and milk it for the short time boom profits then abandon the game in early access. Saw it with Valheim and don't be surprised if the same thing happens to Palworld, it's essentially the same publisher.
I think if you wanted to transfer the license or find a different game studio, this was the worse way to do it. Sending this kind of shockwave to the community and deleting all traces of the game (they took down the sub reddit lol) was probably not the way to pave a future path for the game.
No one seems to mention the obvious, metazoo sacred the shit out of Pokemon, and remember eBay wanted to be all up in metazoos business, metazoo had works in the pipeline, a cartoon series, just like Pokemon, metazoo Toys, and a set that sealed Metazoo's future, nursery rhymes creatures, that the competition "Pokemon" could not let happen, if metazoo is greedy, Pokemon is 10 times greedy, sounds like Pokemon with the help from eBay, took care of metazoo!
Metazoo’s failure was the result of mismanagement, incompetence and a lack of actual players. There’s no conspiracy here. They failed the execute. I can draw up all the plans I want but reality is in the execution of those plans.
If it gets down to $10-$20 a booster box, it almost becomes, well, I wonder why not open one and see what the fuss is over. Rock bottom will come and people will buy some out of curiosity, heck I’m even curious for sub $20 per booster box.

No one pays me anything. I’m sorry the product that you hold is worth a fraction that it was two weeks ago. It’s a bummer. At the end of the day, MZ was a fraction of the TCG market and not even a blip on the broader collectibles market. Collectibles will rise and fall as people invest money in them or choose not to.

Turns out investing in a product called “Metazoo” may not have been a brilliant idea.

Been trying to sell for 6 months at 30% of market prices. This makes no difference to me now because it wasn't selling anyways....
