Getting Started in Star Wars CCG - Part 1: How is the Best Way to Collect and Play this Game?
We've done a few introductions in the past, but this one is a fun little adventure. Tom, who reached out to me from the Star Trek community, is interested in collecting the game and wanted to do an overview of the sets and collecting for the game. He also wants to open up an entire pack fresh set!
So come along and learn about our favorite game and see some packs cracked open.

Deck Boxes, Storage and Transportation? What’s the Best Bang For Your Buck?
To complete your original trilogy non-foil collection there are 83 new cards found in episode 1 boosters. 30 from Tatooine Booster 14 from Coruscant Booster 39 from Reflections 3 Premiums
🔥🔥🔥
A fun tour through the history of the game. Those ESB 2 Player cards may be worth bindering if you're a major completionist like me due to the 1996 copyrights. As well as the Premiere 2P Moisture Farm and Electrobinoculars. I think they actually annoyed me more when getting the ANH and Hoth Revised sets since I to keep making sure sellers had 1998 dates.
Are you sure that the prices of the complete sets are that low? I remember seeing WB Dagobah go for $600 for example.
I think things have come down, quite significantly. There’s a video with a spreadsheet that tracks average prices for sets. Can find it here: ua-cam.com/video/xNHtANLDUt4/v-deo.htmlsi=qUdbVboRa5P21cmI
Nice 8) ☕
I started out just wanting to collect the cards I played with in my childhood. I was planning Premiere through Special Edition. When I completed that I figured Endor & DSII would really be a more appropriate “completion” point. But throughout my early collecting I ended up with a handful of Reflection I cards so I thought that they really were just foils of the sets I already had. Long story short… I have all but 3 of the English cards, just about every sealed pack and/or box Decipher ever released and I am trying to get all of the Sales Sheets. I still avoid the Japanese cards. I’m sure that domino will fall one day.
Same boat for me. Bought a $200 set of Reflections foils a few years ago just to have something again. Then decided I could fill out a binder with Enhanced stuff, mains, and such. Then found a couple collections at great prices...now I'm the ICSD foil from an English set with a binder full of extra mains and money cards.
Thank you for the videos! Could you make a dedicated Non-Aligned video at some point? NA has some banger cards, but everyone always thinks of the ‘official’ Factions first…
Sure, happy to do it. We’ve kind of got a long list but we will get to it!
But complete sets aren’t even enough if you want to play! How many cards do you need x2, c3 or more of? Just-collecting deprives you the best aspects of playing the game itself. Just be prepared for learning curve.
Play for free online with gemp. Or unless you’re entering in actual tournaments, just print off what you want and use proxies. There’s no reason to spend $50 on a Lord Vader unless you’re really into actual cards. I’ll also just note that so much of this is meta dependent. Are you playing with episode one stuff? With virtual cards? A deck that’s good for prem-ds2 is going to get smashed in a different format. If you want to build decks, I’d say to pick a format and get a play group all committed to playing in that format and build around it.
I also recommend expanding into Middle-Earth the CCG & Star Trek CCG, both of which have niche fan groups online.
It might be useful providing the service to print out virtual cards and other PDF's designed for people to DIY printouts at home, except provide a higher quality of service with cards produced nearly if not entirely as well as the professionals. I for one would pay for that, though I think adding some small or unobtrusive watermark or symbol would be needed to ensure it's not a forgery.
Congratulations. It looks great. 1, 2, 3, 4, 8 and 10. Impressive!
👏
Congrats on finishing your Two Towers foil collection. I just sold one on ebay to a fellow named Matt. I'll go through the rest of my foils to check if I have the last cards you need. If you could ever shout out my seller name that would be cool, thanks!
I just bought one of my missing foils off eBay! Could have been the same. If you do, feel free to let me know. Happy to give a shoutout to you and all the other folks that helped me get there!
Quite the achievement!
Some really nice cards here.
Huzzah! What an amazing collection!
Amazing Achievement! This is the set I’m furthest away from.
Thanks for the video dude. This is my affiliation. I have all of the Decipher era cards. Yet way behind on all the virtual cards. Gotta say I like number 4, blowing up Feddy outposts is my favorite.
SWCCG strikes me as having a lot of potential for pauper or peasant decks. There really are multiple power curves.

Great video! Romulans are one of my favorite affiliations. Love seeing the Drone Control Room and associated cards from the Straight and Steady set. I was one of the co-designers of that virtual expansion and it has a very special place in my heart.
gotta say I'm disappointed at the low number of cards on your list that exist in physical copies. I'm a bit of an oldschool purist on my dead card games. can't play nostalgic tabletop games with old friends using newly invented virtual cards. I do respect the continuing committee trying to keep the game alive in some form but it's not for me.
When playing STCCG, I'll gladly play both with and without the Continuing Committee cards, depending on the kind of game I want. The CC cards and ban list have put the game in a much better position than where it was post-All Good Things. If I were to do Decipher cards only, I'd probably play in the so-called Golden Age Format (Premiere - Rules of Acquisition). I also feel like the CC virtual cards flow very naturally from the Decipher 1E cards: same templating and card types and use of real images from the shows/movies and the mechanics are also refinements/progressions from Decipher designs.
Thanks for watching! Yep, perfectly fine you dont wanna play virtual. But I did reference 6 actual Decipher cards in my list. Some just paired with virtual too. Shows you there are fantastic cards from both Decipher and TrekCC. Fun little nugget, the TrekCC has been keeping the game "alive" longer than Decipher actually did. By almost double the amount of years. Crazy! Thanks for the comment!
@@derrickmarsh50 I understand why an online format is useful to reach a larger community and put events together, etc. however in my opinion a large part of the appeal of a ccg (TrekCC cards in any way collectable?) is making the best decks with what you have and getting creative to make it unique and yours. It seems to me that the online formats lose that, which in and of itself makes it in a way a completely different game. add to that new cards and rule rebalancing. I'm glad people are still finding aspects of it and maybe more accessible competitive play enjoyable. to me it's just too radical a departure. plus I just love pushing cardboard around on a table.
@@MrSupurdavecouple of things: the virtual cards are print and play and can be used in physical STCCG tournaments. Also, online play is crucial for STCCG given how much smaller the player base is compared to other out of print CCGs. Also, the CC runs retro online tournaments on Lackey that use only Decipher era cards. And I think there’s a lot of fun to be had with both the Modern STCCG format and retro formats.
@@StephenWSanders I understand it makes it much more accessible especially for competitive play. if you can just print off or otherwise use any number of any card ever conceived of in your deck builds though it fundamentally alters the game. Technically I don't think it's a ccg anymore. that being said if other people like playing it that way more power to them. it's certainly more economical.
I'm surprised that the continuing committee never constrained the number of duplicates in a deck to 4 like MtG.
I don’t think it’s really necessary for this game with unique icons being so prevalent and only being able to have one of each card out at once. You can run 10 Vaders but you can only have one down, for example.
Please upload these in at least 1080 if not 4K; the card text is just too small otherwise.
The deck list is in the video description if you want to load it into gemp and check it out. I hear you on 1080 or HD, unfortunately we are a budget channel and don’t have the premium versions of software like streamyard needed to do HD, creating limitations of doing higher quality stuff. Always appreciate the feedback.
Great game though the interface is a bit too unfriendly to new users, and since the game already has something of a learning curve, a more accessible UI would be desirable.
🍺
I am shocked that a Luke Skywalker, Jedi Knight is not on your list. Esp when they're being sold up to $800 and r ultra rare. I have several Premiere Vader cards. Never seen the foils and blank cards yet.
You can buy a Luke Skywalker Jedi knight right now on eBay for $175. Perhaps you were looking at a graded one. The Vader was a truly minty one because of quality issues and the heavy play it has seen.
I have a buddy who opened a MTG/Pokemon card shop right before Covid. I remember thinking when he opened that it was a super risky venture. He survived through Covid because the government delayed foreclosures until after the pandemic concluded. His shop is gone now. I can only imagine trying to open a shop selling old often dead CCGs vs a shop selling current CCGs. Its a hard market with a ton of competition. Anyway thanks for the video. You know what BoardMatt? You're the man! haha
Thanks, really appreciate you tuning into our conversations! On your note about retail… I feel bad for people trying to open brick and mortar shops as there’s just SO many costs and SO much uncertainty. The internet at least has less cost
Opening a brick & mortar has to make a profit of bringing people in and buying something. Not necessarily selling cards. Its weird venture 😂
Nice video 8)
Fun video. Great explanation. What would be an equally fun, thematic Dark Side deck to play against this?
I’ve been a serious collector since 2021 but haven’t played in 24+ years. I was thinking about building and playing premiere-hoth or maybe premiere-DSII with my son. I’d prefer to keep it low complexity. Ideally dueling decks focused more on a theme. Any ideas or resources to build these kind of decks?
You're doing the Lord's work.
I feel you about the commute, sir. Used to have to drive an hour to Wichita, KS to get to the big comic/card store. #GreatPlainsProblems Now in KC it’s a 5 minute drive Lol
SWCCG cards really are magical
We can all relate to so much of this 😂 Love it, thanks guys
I remember in the 90s how excited I was to blow my money I earned as a paper boy to buy a deck of star trek ccg. Watching star trek was a part of my childhood and nerding out getting to play this was so much fun. Good memories.
This was a lot of fun!
Only just watching this now, thanks. Wow grading costs in 2022 seem to be double or in the case of BGS, almost triple of what is is today ($42 with subgrades back then - now it is $18). They have come down a lot. I cant imagine the cumulative cost to get these things done back then.
Great video! The charts are nice for trends, but adding the current prices on those slides would also be super helpful for getting a sense of the card prices.
Good suggestion! I didn’t want to cram too much on there but maybe splitting into a couple is the way to do it. Thanks for tuning in!
🍺
Cool video! Been waiting for this one. Def learned alot. I bet Ability, Ability, Ability, would go well with this deck. Thanks for the lesson, guys.
Glad you enjoyed!
I'd love to see Andy discuss adjusting decks from previous videos for other retro formats. Like take the "Hunt Down And Destroy The Jedi" deck, which was a Premiere-SE deck, and tell us how (and why) he'd adjust it for Premiere-DS2 and/or Premiere-Ref2. As a NARP, I don't really know if changing formats would necessitate just a few cards being swapped out, or if I should completely rebuild my deck.
No v cards?
No v cards in this. It includes up to ref2.
@@boardmatt is that a format to exclude episode 1 stuff? or is it to keep say maintenance cards out of that format?
@@BattleHardenedGamesprem-ref2 is a really popular format because it has a lot of the things people love without the things that they hate, like the senate or podracing. The episode one stuff isn’t all bad, there’s just a few broken things and serious power creep that kind of ruin the experience. V cards do a lot to fix this but it’s just a lot more complicated in general.
@@boardmatt Cool, I dig it. I was always kinda turned off by V cards due to like you're saying more complexity, too much text etc.
@@boardmatt is Tatooine legal in that format or no?
Dark surgeon!!
🔪 🔪 🔪
I beat Alex on this but I did have two advantages: I knew I’d likely face it and thus tech’d against it, and luck.
Set 1 getting stronger and stronger!
My complete set 1 binder approves this message

👀
It's not truly random, but for my Eldraine cube, I put 3 cards of each color into each pack + artifacts. It ensures that everyone gets a good distribution of colors.
This is a nice idea. I tried shuffling it all up and it was kind of a mess.
