I looked this subject up and you were the first video that I found. From the little that I read, you are doing it 110% correctly. I didn't need to watch any other video. I didn't think that they made cork-handled rods but it seems they are gaining popularity. They do feel great in the hand. The family has 3 now so I'm going to condition them to make them last as long as possible. Another thing, your camera work is great. It is appreciated.
I really appreciate the comment and thanks for watching!
Tremendous respect for someone that takes care of their equipment. You are one of the most organized and one whom just really takes care of their stuff. Your boat , fishing equipment, is always in tip top looking shape, and you set a great example of professionalism in that category. Just want you to know that is not overlooked and thanks for all the great videos!
+arciefan Really appreciate this comment. Thank you for watchin!!
I bought some of the U40 and I have to say this stuff is amazing so easy to put on. I used a toothbrush to put it on and it worked perfectly. I would recommend getting this stuff
I know it is 5 years old but thanks for the video, watched it last week and my sealer just came in the mail today!!! Thanks
My pleasure buddy! 👊
Just got a jar of this stuff in. I am going to apply it to all my cork rods. Great video.
ITS A PLEASURE TO SEE SOMEONE TAKE SUCH PRIDE IN SOMETHING SO TRIVIAL NOT BORING AT ALL THANKS FOR THE TIP AND KEEP UP THE GREAT VIDS
+Versatile Outdoors Thank you!!
Used this on several new rods recently. I found that if you use a very fine bristle 1" varnish brush, you can be accurate enough to not have to tape off any non-cork areas.
Jim, it looks like that cork sealer is just the ticket! I have a 12 year-old cheaper rod. When I received it, it had a clear plastic covering the cork for shipping. I never bothered to take the plastic off. The handles look like new. The guides are falling apart, but the handles are great. LOL! Sometimes it pays to be lazy! Good show my friend!
+Juanelo1946 Hey Juanelo, I know guys that keep the plastic on as well...I thought about it, but that's just not how I roll, haha!! Thanks for watchin buddy!!
love the way you do things not many people are picky about there stuff like that I definatley am
+Brandon Dockery Thanks bud, I'm definitely picky!!
Old video I know but still relevant as of 2020. Will be doing this myself. Good video
Appreciate you watching!
I ordered some. Coming in today along with the Okuma EVX. Going to put this on my Celilo.
Very cool!
Not at all boring I just bought some new rods and those are my babies so taking care of them is very important to me. I don't change shoes when I use them but what it likes ain't much lol!
Awesome tip! I would have never thought of something like that. It's also a good non fishing weekend project. Thanks for sharing.
+Adrian Escobar Definitely, thanks for watchin!!
I have a question since you guys are doing cork handle my cork handle came off my fishing pole what is the best thing to use to put it back on
Great idea and the corks look great after the treatment. I will get that stuff and do mines before the season start. 🦊
This video is awesome the foam brush is $$$$$ for applying U40. Just did my new Megabass Orochi 2018 lineup with the stuff and they look so good!!!! Keep up the good work and tight lines!!!

Nice product and great video man I can't wait to try it out.
+BassGeek Thanks bud!
It has been a few years now. Have you found that the sealer makes a noticeable difference in the longevity of the handle?
It was more satisfying than boring 👍🏼👍🏼
Appreciate you! 👊
Couldn't find this at Bass Pro. So I just used some Old English wood cleaner and protector. Looks decent, may not have the longevity of this...idk.
glad you made this video I just got some cork seal!
+Joey F Thanks for watchin!!
+TackleJunky81 always brother love your videos
Do they need any sanding after the sealer is applied? How long does the seal last?
I have never sanded or re sealed them.
thanks brotha I'm definitely buying that soon always have great tips and a sweet setup around you thanks again make another one soon please lol
+Wesley Adams Thanks for watchin Wesley!!
I bought some of this stuff. It says water based poly. I do a lot of woodworking. It looks a lot like Minwax's polycrilic. Milky and clear on drying. In fact it looks exactly like it and it's also water based. It's about $17 a gallon. This stuff is about $10 a shot glass. Hmmm....
Yeah like ronson lighter fluid is Naptha for a way marked up price..
This is an interesting comment, I do woodworking too but I'd be hesitant to but something designed for wood as a top coat/sealent on cork. Even tho they may be similar in that their both polycrylic water based there is a good chance the rest of the ingredients in the cork sealer formula can be designed specifically for cork so it doesn't dry hard such as the kind created for wood. Most of the technical full list of chemicals in these kind of finishes are hard to see/get unless your some kind of chemist. Just my 2 cents, most of my knowledge on wood finishes come from Bob Flexner's Wood Finishing and personal experience...However, it's not to say they could be the same and just marketed different to make some extra cash..The marketing industry loves to confuse and misinform for the sake of more profit
Do you do anything to maintain EVA handles other than replace them if/when needed. How about maintenance on the blank.
the best cork seal is fish slime ! and it's easy to apply !
Ya just catch a fish and smack it on all sides of the cork. Or rub your hands all over both sides of the fish and then jerk your rod off with your slimey hands. Who cares if the fish dies?! Plenty more where they came from.
Proceeds to cover rod in gaftop boogers
What is a proper cork filler ? Thanks for the video!!
I've never used a filler, so I can't say. Thanks for watching, bud!
how often you repaint the cork seal?
I'm a woodworker, I would have started from the reel seat to the butt, any reason you started in the middle of the cork? also I noticed the jar said water based, would a lacquer or urethane based product be better?,fighting off the elements be it fresh or salt?
Whats your opinion on using Nail hardener vs the cork seal ...? Ive heard differing opinions ...
I've never used nail hardener, so I can't say, but I'm still using U40 to this day...sealed a dozen rods last week.
@@TackleJunky81 ty … is Eva vs cork really impactful on baitcasters? And have you heard of ARK rods ?
@efishnseetv2082 I used to prefer cork as it just felt better in hand to me, but after using eva for so many years I'm happy with it as well. Personal preference really. I've heard of ARK, but never used them.
@@TackleJunky81 ok noted! Ya UA-camr Tyler Berger did a vid claiming that ARK’s Tharp series rods are the best on the market… (139$ rod) lmk what you think?
@@Efishnseetv I haven't used them.
You did a awesome job
Thank you!
lol...you crack me up bro, taping off the little blue rings and stuff. I only laugh because I'm just as anal about all my stuff too. like I tell people yes I may have OCD but honestly I like it because all my gear is always in perfect order and it makes it so much easier to keep track of what you need to replace etc....plus by using this cork seal it give you a good excuse to to mess with all your rods and so on. Just like upgrading hooks and rings on crankbaits to me it's actually relaxing. great video buddy! Screamin Drags 🎣~JC
Agreed! lol Thanks for watching Jaime!
It's not OCD sir it's CDO. OCD in alphabetical order!
Going to by some rods soon and want to protect them for sure. Now does the cork sealant make the cork slippery? Also many full length grips can you get out of one container of sealant? Thanks, love the channel btw
Tyler Pinkley Doesn't make them slippery at all and I've done probably 20 or so rods and still have well over a half of bottle.
The sponge thing was called Mr clean magic eraser for anyone wondering.
Thank you. What is the consequences if you put too much cork seal on it? Just curious :p
Great video were can you get that
Great tips bud! Now, what is the reason why you didn't seal the end of your rod handle? Is the end of the rod handle made of some kind of rubber or plastic that could react to the sealant?
Feels like rubber so I didn't seal it.
Does this change the texture or feel of the cork?
I like that man, really helps bring out the natural beauty of the cork... What are the Rods that have the full length of cork?
+Keifer's Reel Planet Bass Thank you! All Dobyn's rods in this video.
Great Video!
very nice! I need to try that.
+Peter Haskin Thanks Peter!!
Are the ends not made of a cork material also? Or are they a foam cap? Is this normal? Awesome video as always
+Team Frankenmerc Not sure what the end material is. Thanks for watchin!!
Awesome vid!
+ZYTHUM13 Thank you!!

Nice video 👍
thanks for the reply. I'm a Lil scare that I put too much of a thin coat. how would I know that I apply it correctly?
You can try to apply more and the cork is either going to absorb it or not.
Great vid, thx for the tip👍🏻
+Myla Acuna no problem Myla.
nice video thanks for the advice
+Michael Braico No problem Michael
Thanks bro
My pleasure! 👊
The "she's a beaut Clark" had me dying 😂
Where do you find the cork sealer?
cool vid man!! mite have to try that
+Bass Stryker Outdoors thanks for watchin Greg!!
Are these all dobyns rods?
Yes.
It would be nice if higher end rods like Dobbins already came sealed I have a few Dobbins and love them im not saying I would like them more but it would be cool if it was already done
i need a crankin stick for under 140 any advice? i can always spend a bit more but really would like to stay in that range
+BCI Fishing Shimano Compre is like 109, I had one a few years back...great rod. Bass pro cranking rods are nice as well. If you want to spend a tad more look at the Shimano Crucial.
thank ya sir! only down side to the crucial IMO is the full grip. thanks though. and im still blown away by how many selfish, oblivious people watch your videos like some people dont understand you have kids and a wife and a job. i was offended by it. even tho im a 14 year old who has no bills or anything to worry about. just wanted to let you know that! Thanks!
much appreciated man!!
What do you use to clean the cork going forward after having applied the U-40 seal?
Another UA-camr just said to use a Water dampened cloth wet cloth.
Its work for eva foam handle?
No, just cork.
how about boiled linseed oil? Same stuff used to seal walnut gun stocks?
+mojo jojo not sure on that one.
Not boring to me!
Appreciate you watching! 👊
how does it feel with the cork seal after the application?
+Kevin Vue it enhances the feel, still feels like cork just a higher quality
+TackleJunky81 nice I bought another brand of cork sealant and it worked just fine. just feels more tacky for me. but it does work.
where can I that cork sealer? Is it available on the hardware store or in a tackle shop?
Tackle Warehouse!
I may be childish but I laughed when he said just stick the tip in
Anyone else find it oddly relaxing watching him do this?
+John England haha!!
Uh ha haaa!!!
I see me a couple other UA-cam videos do this. I'm definitely going to attack some of my new rods. Recently acquired 4 brand-new rods that have cork handles. Yes I'm oldschool and i like the look and feel of cork myself. I'd like to keep them looking good too, so I'll be looking for some of that U-40 if I have to order it I'll order it. I'd ike to see if I can find it here locally and pick it up.
I wonder if that will work on my glx it has 2 tone cork
+Jose Martinez I'd imagine it would, though it may darken it more
great video thks
+Jeremy Mathis Thanks Jeremy!!
do you seal the cork handles on the 13 fishing reels
I have not...but they appear to be sealed.
great video jim! at first I thought the title said how to STEAL your cork handle lol :P
Would you say there a noticeable difference between the champion and champion xp
+KnB Fishing The only difference between the old Champ and the New XP are Fuji guides and the butt section of the cork is longer on the split grip.
How long does it take to dry?
+Nick Johnson Hey Nick, I did a couple of batches of 10 and by the time that I was done with the last one the first one was dry...but to be honest I really didn't mess with them until after a full day.
thats a magic eraser lol
Are you no longer using PTL?
+WI bass angler I'm not on staff with them any more, but the craw D' will always be one of my favorites though.
Where can you purchase this?
+Cuyler Kochin Tackle Warehouse, $5
Good video.....just sub'd to the channel!! would you recommend a fine grit sandpaper to clean the cork first before you seal it if your handles are really dirty?
I use baby wipes or a magic eraser.
is there a way to dye cork black?
Sharpie
I just bought some cork seal.
is this liquid poly?
Yup
going against the grain doesn't turn out off?
Nope
You sure it’s alright to use a foam brush ? Doesn’t it say use a bristle brush on the bottle?
Mike Givens I didn't have any issues with the foam brush.
I applied it on my NRX loomis rod seems like it made the top cork a little yellow kind of weird lol
you should do an update video
try out frog tape seals a lot better
Before cork seal came out, man syrup was used And it worked as well than this thing.
whats that?
Oh yah dat man syrup is goot stuff yus apply a little at a time one rod to de uddr
So it's basically just varnish for cork
+Herkus Rudzinskas it's probably similar
I have a question, just did all my 10 extreme hp and everyone of them feel and look like it was originally. maybe because of the different cork champion has? can I reapply another coats
The color and texture didn't change much when I did my HP's. Definitely a different grade cork, but they are sealed and wont absorb a second coat. The cork on my rods does't even look used, the sealer is working out well.
Mr. Clean Magic Eraser
Remember to always keep your cork clean. Bahahhahaha, I thought it was funny
"Just the tip." -TackleJunky81
That's what she said.
That's what she said @ 5:03
+Rhys31 ...I was so going to say that myself in the video, haha!!
Uncle Eddie
👊💪
beeswax is just as good if not better !
Daniel macdonald just mixed a beeswax and linseed oil mix.
Could Mineral Oil work ok?
I would hate to work on your house haha picky clients are the worst
I hated the darker look of the cork
Really?
Yep seems so, how else u ll know that to seal the rod cork u need to buy a cork seal and apply it?? Very usefull no??
Fork handles?? 😂😂😂
is the u40 making the cork darker permanent?
While its on, yes.
