Excellent replacement of friction disk. Being a backyard mechanic, I thought I was the only one who had trouble reassembling the parts back together. It's always a pleasure to watch a real professional. 👍👍👍👍👍
Perfect timing! I have the same job to do on a White/MTD this weekend. Mine was definitely mice. They got the wheel rubber, and gnawed a little on every piece of plastic and rubber they could find. Ive never had that happen before. I guess its a good excuse to replace everything and know its all in good shape. I guess I also better contact HR, and set up a meeting with the barn cats. 😁
I really like your snowblower repair tutorials I live in a area where we get snow . You are like the only content creator that shows how to repair snowblowers and I appreciate it.
I admire you and thank You because You have a lot of orders and repairs and yet you find time and patience to share the recordings. Everyone realizes how much additional time and work it requires.
I was just wondering about how to do this. I got an old Craftsman snowblower who has survived decades but I always worry if it will last another winter. My gears have been slipping for years. Thanks for producing and sharing and saving me money with your lessons how to DIY and fix my own machine.
Well Done Dony and great photography. Glad the wheels came off easily. Not much maintenance going on with that one. A nice big old machine with little use. Likely the skid shoes should be lowered.
I've got a 45 year old Roper snowblower, it uses a turn buckle style adjuster for the drive. They say to adjust have snow blower on nose put a pennet on the drive disc and ajust till friction wheel just touches. Ahhh the good old simple days.
I have a 20-year-old Murray with the Tecumseh engine. I did a video on replacing that friction wheel. The replacement friction wheel wasn't actually much larger in diameter than the old one. However, I had tightened the cable adjustment as much as it would go, but it was still an issue for me. Replacing it wasn't too bad after I watched one of your videos, and it works perfectly fine now.
Thanks Donny!! I have a (25?) year old MTD tracked machine that I thought had the same problem last year. I bought a new disc, but as it turns out, the disc was fine, but the coiled spring pin connecting the chain and whatchamacallit gears snapped off. Thankfully a fastener shop here in Alaska had plenty, so I got it up and running in no time. Thanks, and another great video!
it's like one of those puzzles where everything has small tolerances and small parts falling all over the place if it tips the right way...even for seasoned mechanics, they can drive you crazy....so easy yet so difficult...I get it Don
awesome video DB73. I have the same set up on my Simplicity with a Briggs 1150 engine. After seeing you struggle a little, I know what I'm in for when I go to change mine out. I'll bookmark this video cause I know I'll need it.
Great video. Fortunately my machine has limited use and only three year old Ariens and doesn’t need to replace my friction disc, but I’ll use your video on how to replace it. Thank you Donyboy73 for another great and informative video. 🇨🇦💝🥰🙏. hopefully, you have dug yourself out from the huge snow storm (Nov. 2024)
Thx for sharing your experience lve watched your clips overs the years every time lm repairing a snowblower etc it saves me so much time and wasted money .
I have a similar machine and used your video from a few years ago to replace my 20 year old friction disk on my 8 HP Craftsman and the two belts about a month ago. I should have cleaned my hex shaft with cleaner. Didn’t recall doing that on your earlier video. Also replaced the Bolt/nut on the one wheel with a second linch pin. Seems to work just fine. Not sure if it’s that important to have a bolt on the one wheel.
Hi the last time I did this I put two elastic rubber bands over the washers in a figure 8 to hold both of them in place, then I tied a piece of thin string between the bushings on either end to hold them on the shaft, that way no matter what you do nothing will fall off, when it was in place I put one bolt in each bearing then I removed the string and bands and put the other two bolts back in.
Another great video!! Short and to the point, yet still contains any pitfalls or set backs that happen to you. This sets us up to anticipate those pitfalls to expect them and try to avoid or atleast deal with them. I'm using the "Thanks$" botton above to send another few $$ your way to say thanks for the knowledge you share. Plus you can put the $$ toward a lift table you need.😉💪 Peace out and God bless you and your family.😎✌🖖🙏🤝
Have been watching your videos for a while now but just subscribed to the channel. Now I can keep up with the new content and stay informed. I like watching other people work lol. Do you have an old vid of top ten tools you cant live without?
Donyboy video is right on the money but having done dozens of this repair I can assure it's still a major pain in the butt. This job will teach you how many thumbs you really have. 😂😂😂
Great video Don. What do you use to lube the drive chains? Would it be better to clean that aluminum drive Platinum before you put the friction disc assembly back together it seems like it would be easier to get it the whole Platinum that way?
By blower is so old I wore out the worm gear around the chute. I change the engine oil every season, has to be over 20 years old and works fine. The friction disc is still good and I’ve never changed it.
Did you tighten the two bottom bolts on the access panel/door? If not, I hope it's not too late! I don't own a snowblower, but I always enjoy watching your videos. Another great one, Don.
Biggest problem with this setup is if there are oil seals leaking from above. The oil ends up on the friction disk then you’re screwed. Replacing shaft seals is a big pain.😊
On my Ariens machine, the hex drive shaft is stub ended, that is, it is fastened on one end only. Simply remove the bottom cover, remove the bolts holding the disc, and slip off the end of the shaft and out of the housing. Takes about 5 minutes total. Never had any problems with the shaft being held on one end only. Its held in a ball bearing, exactly how I don't remember.
I have a similar MTD machine and it has the chains like the one you are working on. Are those chains adjustable as mine are loose and I see no adjustments to tighten them ? Thanks.
Long time watcher and happy student. Replaced a friction disc on an old Sears a couple of days ago, the job was a bit frustrating and comforted that I am not alone. I'm left wondering if 3D printing a sleeve using the rubbery TPU could cover a used disc in cases where you can't get parts, but taking it apart just isn't appealing right now.
Don Years back you mentioned a good replacement disc for ARIENS 3003, or 00300300. Am thinking it may been an Oregon. I believe you said better quality? My 1977 Ariens ST724 924032 finally needs one.
Donyboy73, I got a hex shaft with a stripped out sprocket and they don't seem to be readily available anymore. What do you do when you need a replacement? Weld on a new sprocket? Find a a used? Do you have a line on them from a parts store you use? Thanks!
1:29 I have a similar machine. My shear bolt keeps breaking. I think the hole is 'hammered' out. Can that be re-drilled in place to the next size up? Or do I need to pull the axle? Need help in the shop?
I quit using lithium grease because it hardens up and gives trouble. I use synthetic purple brake calliper grease. Waterproof, doesn’t migrate and stays soft
What if you have bad traction on low gears, but 3rd+ works just fine, I am guessing that is due to the adjustment you show at the end somehow? I mean if the disc is bad, it would be bad traction in all gears.
I think these discs fail more often when users change speeds with out disengaging the drive, The disc has chunks torn out of it when the blower is used this way.
come on now Donny ... you should have cleaned that friction plate before putting it back together ... and sand off the rust on the wheel axle before applying the anti seize paste ! and check the ole air pressure on the tires !
Well i did ordered so e parts from the place that you suggested Discount pro parts Man , first it is in US money $$$$$$ And shipping is very expensive but very expensive. !!!!!!!! For canada No more for me !
Don’t, luv the channel and your style explaining what you are doing. I have a request. Trying to decide whether I want to but a machine with ‘zero turn’ or ‘turn assist’. They usually have a lever below the hand grip to stop the shell on that side. I cannot find any videos as to whether these systems are worth it, how they work, and do they need and additional maintenance. That would be an interesting video for sure. Tim MA, USA
I’ve got both types. I think it’s not necessary as the one without it is just as easy to turn, and less likely to have a system failure. More weight, more parts, more things to keep adjusted properly. Just like heated grips, don’t really need them with proper gloves. 🇨🇦👍
Dony great job straight to the point one question are you ever going to get a lift table? You're not getting younger Dan from DD speed shop looks much happier since he got off the ground..... work harder not smarter
@@donyboy73Do It "BEFORE" You get old ! 😉 All that lifting, kneeling, crouching takes a toll on you and accelerates the AGE Process ! 😖 Believe me ... I Am NOT a fan of the process. 😠 Laying on a cold concrete floor in the winter to get underneath something can cripple ya fer days ! 😩

Glad you liked it!

You brought back some frustrating memories! I never look forward to getting the drive back into the housing. Nice step by step repair.
You and me both!
Well done very informative I always enjoy your vids
This is great. My Murray is 19 years old. The friction wheel looks good but I bought a new one and will be replacing it soon. Thankyou!
Great video. Thanks for the tip about the friction cable adjustment.
Replaced one on my 12 yr old mtd pro the end of last winter , ready for another 12 years : )

Yep it is that time of year and reinstallation is always time consuming compared to removal.
Thank you for your time, it is not as bad a job as I had heard and that disc is WAY smaller than I imagined
As usually, a very informative video!

Thanks for the video! You had me laughing right at the beginning tho, "Nothing to worry about, just watch out for FLAMES or sparks" Lol
Great information. Don’t remember you using a floor jack to prop it up. Why this time.
Another great video Don. I wonder why Murray engineers put the drive shaft bushing on the inside of the machine.

I changed discs that looked like that on my snapper rear engine riders over the years.
Great step by step video, but why wouldn't you have taken off the wheel axle to allow more room to install the new disc?
Great video thanks.
Great video Don. What do you use to lube the drive chains? Would it be better to clean that aluminum drive Platinum before you put the friction disc assembly back together it seems like it would be easier to get it the whole Platinum that way?

One question: When do you use oil instead of grease and vice versa?
I use grease on drive axle bushings and on friction disc shaft I use oil or lithium grease, it doesn't really matter
Don
Years back you mentioned a good replacement disc for ARIENS 3003, or 00300300. Am thinking it may been an Oregon. I believe you said better quality? My 1977 Ariens ST724 924032 finally needs one.

What is the mix ratio of your motor oil transmission oil ?
Usually 50/50... 🤷♂️
The good news for me. I've never used a snow blower and never will.
1:29 I have a similar machine. My shear bolt keeps breaking. I think the hole is 'hammered' out. Can that be re-drilled in place to the next size up? Or do I need to pull the axle?
Need help in the shop?
I notice there is a second (outer) hole in the axel for the right side wheel. When would that hole be used?
What is the mixture percentage of oil/transmission fluid?
50/50
I quit using lithium grease because it hardens up and gives trouble. I use synthetic purple brake calliper grease. Waterproof, doesn’t migrate and stays soft
Would it be rude to ask where you get most of your parts for older snow blowers? I have an older Yardman, and find it tough to locate good parts.
What if you have bad traction on low gears, but 3rd+ works just fine, I am guessing that is due to the adjustment you show at the end somehow? I mean if the disc is bad, it would be bad traction in all gears.
