Following the rape of his daughter Dinah, and the violent response of his two sons, Shimon and Levi, Yaakov receives a wake-up call and instructs his entire household to “Rid yourselves of the alien gods in your midst, purify yourselves, and change your clothes." (Gen. 35:2) What were the foreign gods doing in their midst and what prompted Yaakov to call for their removal?
