    The Logic integration is a beautiful thing. Not perfect, but leaps ahead of everyone else. I'm very happy to have it on my P4. Been playing with it for a week and it does the biz. Still need to play with it more, but buying the keyboard summer of last year was a very good thing. Thanks for putting some steroids into this beast, Nektar, and big ups to Tim and Nick for the demo!

      What isn’t perfect about it? What’s missing? Just about to buy a P6 to use with Cubase 5, reason and logic!!!

    • @velanche

      @@tronlady1 I haven’t had the P4 in three years. Native Instruments sent me a Komplete Kontrol keyboard to test with, and at the time my place and desk was too small for more than one keyboard, so a friend of mine has it. I’ve seen the other improvements that have been made; Nektarine wasn’t available before I’ve given it to him. I might have to sweet talk into getting it back cuz I’m curious. I do think that the system overall might be worth buying the keyboard, though.

    • @tronlady1

      I can answer my own question now cuz I bought one! The keybed is one of the worst I've EVER played. REALLY clacky and noisy. Makes a noise when pressed and when released!!! The rubber faders and encoders are sticky which I've looked up and IS actually a THING!!! It's buggin me! Functionality wise haven't really tried it properly yet but it seems really good. Gna be a learning curve I think? Daren't try Nektarine as it's taking me years to get rid of fucking Automap on my PC!!!! Wishing I'd have got a CC121 BUT can't use that with Reason or Logic Pro....

    As people note here, the P4 is a bit geeky, but you also don't need to use all its features all the time. I think when you'e got a project open, you find the stuff you need and can pretty much ignore the rest...you may not be using all the great features, but it's still a great experience. And for me at least, there's a lot less back and forth fiddling between keys and computer.
    With a little homework and thought, I find my P4 way more useful than my Novation had been, and without all the AU wrapper stuff. This walkthrough is very informative, and thanks again Nick and Tim.

    Interesting thing - guy (Tim Chandler) who designed this cool keyboard and other stuff previously works with M-audio (which is belong to AVID now) and this keyboard supposed to be with M-audio brand (as I know) but shortly he left M-audio and joined Nectar. So… this keyboard doesn’t really support AVID stuff (I mean it’s work but not for 100%). Most interesting stuff is that BACKGROUND in this video for 100% AVID colors for some reason. :)

    This is a fabulous upgrade to the software. I took a punt 18 months ago on a P6 without the deep integration in Logic (and it was good). I'm glad I did because this is now everything I need in one keyboard. The deep integration is streets ahead of any competition. Everything at your fingertips. And each time you hope it will do something for you - it does! Would be nice to have some tutorial videos but I'd rather you kept producing great kit and great software.

    The integration for the cheaper Impact controllers isn't quite as extensive or powerful but it certainly work's just about as well most of the time. I'd like to see some update for the Panorama P1 to enable a sortof linked mode with another connected Impact controller so you can get all the screen features etc and maybe share the fader and knob pool between the two when linked in the software. I think that would be useful.

    This or Komplete Kontrol for use with soft-synths and Logic?
    Kontrol won’t work with Logic’s stuff, right?
    I don’t know, but I can’t imagine using the controller to do much of anything other then some light synthesis. I use Uhe Diva and Zebra2 more than anything, often use Retro Synth and Alchemy in Logic.
    Not really a fan of NI’s synths other than Monark, which I already have.
    Just know that Uhe synths are NKS compatible. Nektar also lists Uhe Diva, Zebra, TAL UNOLX, TAL Bassline, Synthmaster, Sylenth....pretty much the stuff I use.
    Just asking because the Kontrol screens look a bit more advanced than Nektar’s.

  • @The_Doc_Rocks
    @The_Doc_Rocks 9 років тому

    The big question for me is - will the P4 integrate with Omnisphere 2.1? If not already, will you be able to come up with a template to get it to do that sometime soon? Omni has so many parameters, but if the P4 could control the main ones that most people use, without necessarily getting into the super deep editing, then that would be a HUGE plus. I'm currently using a Novation SL61-MkII but there is no integration for Omnisphere - I can't even get the Mod Wheel to work with it..!
    Other synths that would benefit from P4 integration and control are the Rob Papen ones (Predator, Blue2, etc), XFer Serum, and of course, Kontakt 5.

    • @Skijumptoes
      @Skijumptoes 9 років тому

      You have to set up a mapping profile in omnisphere so that the plugin host (logic etc.) can 'see' the parameters, I used to use it with an sl mk2 fine.
      And rob papen predator works really well with the p4/p6 in my experience! :)

    • @The_Doc_Rocks
      @The_Doc_Rocks 9 років тому

      +Skijumptoes Thanks for taking the trouble to reply - much appreciated :)
      I've not really got into setting up mapping profiles in Omnisphere, so that may well be something of an adventure.
      But the more I look at videos and tests of the Nektar Panorama (the P6 would the one I'd go for), the more I'm liking it - mainly because it doesn't go through Automap.
      I'm tempted, even without direct control of Omnisphere...

    • @Skijumptoes
      @Skijumptoes 9 років тому

      Dr_Rock (Pete) I'm a huge fan of Novation, but this controller wipes the floor with my previous controller (SL Mk2). It just feels very straight forward and you have room to use the controls - plus the drum pads actually work! :)
      Keys were a big concern for me, and the first hour with it i wasn't sure (The SL Mk2 has a nice keybed tho), now i love the feel of it. i'm also loving the motorised fader as the 'go to' for track volumes and automation for vocals etc.
      My only concern is how long the panorama will be supported with Logic/Whatever DAW you use - because just the El Cap update to OS X has meant Nektar have to respond with a new driver. But then this is true for any kind of hardware which has elements of integration.
      I think those kind of concerns exist from the overall feelings i had with Automap etc. i.e. if the controller or automap stops being supported at some point - it kills all projects that have plugins wrapped and integrated into that technology. Every time i loaded up a wrapped plugin it would enter my mind - and really became a bit of an obstacle when trying to write something musical and not have to think about technical aspects.
      However, with the Nektar range it's a totally clean unobtrusive implementation - and it actually works! For most instrument plugins you can use wholly use the controller for sound design like a hardware synth. but mainly i've found that i'm using it to control key elements of 8-12 parameters per instrument/fx.
      What this means is you just get on and use it, and that is priceless! I always felt like i wasn't being a musician with the Novation, and that my time was part engineer, part IT support. :)
      Right now the only negatives for me is it occasionally doesn't get detected in OS X and i have to remove it from the audio/midi device list and then switch back on - not a big issue.
      And also the dynamic mappings (where the controls available change based on plugin modes) seen on Cubase etc. is not, and probably will never be supported in Logic due to how the Logic environment is set up - again not a big issue since this latest update.
      If you got any questions ask away, because i found it hard to get the answers when i was thinking of swapping over from automap. I couldn't even find a local shop so i could try the keybed!!!

      +Skijumptoes Thanks again for those thoughts - much appreciated :) I did upgrade one old iMac to El Capitan to see what it was like, but it broke several of my plugins (especially Izotope ones), as well as doing some other weird stuff due to their new security features called SIP. So I downgraded right back to Yosemite from a SuperDuper clone that I did right before the upgrade. Back to a situation where everything works again. But while I was there, I didn't see or find anything in El Cap that grabbed me as being a reason to upgrade, so I think I may stick at Yosemite for the foreseeable future.
      The only thing now is finding a P6 here in Australia for a reasonable price - our dollar has taken a beating against the US dollar and the UK pound, so our prices are all about 50% or more higher. But I think I'm convinced enough to do it. Thanks for the help. And for sure, if Nektar were to come out with a mapping profile for Omnisphere, given Omni's huge popularity, that would be icing on the cake :)

    Guess I've been out of the loop, alchemy disappeared didn't it last year, take it logic bought it up? Since the X/Y pads were such an integrated part of the alchemy synth (even great on iPad), you would have expected the P4 to have a couple of dedicated pads, and not rely on the macro dials, surely?

    • @enossifiedossified3145
      @enossifiedossified3145 3 роки тому

      The Patch +/- buttons allow up/down scrolling through the patch list starting from the current loaded patch. That works with ALL instruments and audio effects as well as channel strips, by the way, as long as they are in focus on the computer screen. You can also open the library (Y) for either a device or channel strip and the +/- buttons will then move in order through the displayed list.
      For category browsing in Alchemy, you need to use the mouse/trackpad. Since that video was shot, the F-key support was removed by Apple from MacOS, so the patch browsing feature no longer works nor do keystroke macros. (thanks, Apple!)

    • @damianketchersid
      @damianketchersid 9 років тому +3

      +pete g Yes i agree the Nektar Panorama is a very complex DAW controller, but that is what makes it so attractive. Logic Pro X is a very complex DAW, it is nice to have a DAW controller that will dive as deep into your DAW as your everyday producer would. I find it so time consuming to move my mouse around from each and every parameter, closing plugins, inserting new plug ins, adding sends/bus's, automation, just to mute or solo or change the track volume, creating a new synth patch and to even use keyboard shortcuts trying to compose a new track it takes away from the creativity. Making music should be enjoyable and i think thats just what Nektar has done they've completed the void between me and my DAW.

    • @kixxalot

      My thoughts exactly. To me the point of automatic integration with a controller would be more instant playability. But these controllers still seem to have a billion hidden features: "hold this button and tap here while you wiggle that slider to access the blah blah". I'm sure the creators are very very clever programmers, but perhaps they are not so in touch with ordane human beings.

    I am lost at around 11mins where tim explains the advantage of the P series over other wrapper based controllers. Isn’t nektarine a kind of wrapper? Even though he disses it here, isn’t that exactly what nektar have done or is nektarine better than say....akai’s VIP AND novations AUTOMAP????

    • @enossifiedossified3145
      @enossifiedossified3145 3 роки тому +1

      Nektarine is only used for third party plugins and is NOT a wrapper. All the stuff you see used in the video is in the Nektar firmware and controls the internals of Logic.
      If you are using Logic Nektarine is NOT needed. Because of the particulars of the Logic API, there is another way to map third party plugins (see at 0:45 in video), but Nektarine can be used if you like. It is required in other DAWs (details on Nektar's website for each DAW).
      One good reason to use it with Logic is that it runs VSTs inside Nektarine inside Logic, which is otherwise AU only. This opens up possibilities of using VST-only plugins in Logic!!! The Panorama P or T series already have all the Logic internal devices premapped in firmware...this is also true for other DAWs they support lke Reason, Cubase, Studio One, Bitwig, etc., all the native plugins run outside of Nektarine.
      Nektarine is similar to Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol's plugin control in concept, but not as deep (yet). Automap is a wrapper system for each plugin, but Nektarine, like KK, is a plugin that hosts plugins inside itself. That allows multitimbral setups, for one thing...you can layer multiple plugins as a single instance on a single track. It also provides a sound browsing interface like KK. The T series can browse from the keyboard (it has a dedicated button for this), with the P series you have to browse using the mouse because it's design is older and lacks the needed button. This is no different than KK when used without an NI controller...browsing must be done on the comnputer screen.
      All plugin parameters are automapped inside Nektarine, but you can edit the mapping to be to your taste. Instead of requiring NKS compatible plugins like KK, Nektar has a long list of supported popular plugins (u-he, Arturia, etc.) that are ready to go once you donwload mapping files from their website. Unsupported plugins are just like non-NKS plugins in KK...you have to do the mappings yourself. Nektar provides full factory patch bank lists for many popular plugins in the mappings. You only need to add new patches you've created to the browser...select the new patch on the plugin, then click on an import icon in the Nektarine GUI.
      When you are controlling plugins in Nektarine from the keyboard, it uses a menu navigation system where you drill down as far as you like into plugins that have literally thousands of parameters...like Synthmaster, Ominsphere, etc. It's not super useful for programming because of the diving but it's very useful for automation. Drill down to the parameter you are after and start twisting the knobs.
      It works both for instruments and audio effects, whether used as inserts or on aux busses.
      Hopr this helps.

      +Quinn Ingrassia Reason, Cubase, Nuendo, Bitwig Studio and Reaper all feature deep integration to the level seen in this video.
      MainStage integration is also complete, but works slightly differently, due to the nature of MainStage as a live performance app.
      FL Studio also has bi-directional integration with Panorama built in, but not quite as deep as DAWs listed above.
      There are uni-directional presets for Ableton and Pro Tools and Panorama supports any software as a generic MIDI/QWERTY macro assignable controller.
