About “Late Nesters”: It has been documented in modern birds today, across multiple species, the phenomena where pairs will nest and raise young late into the standard breeding season. Weather, food availability, and the timing of the seasons can force birds to nest earlier or later than usual, and even allow birds to have multiple clutches. While doing research on neotropical migratory songbirds (warblers, tanagers, orioles, flycatchers, thrushes, etc.), my principle investigator and I noticed a marked difference in the behavioral patterns of the birds we were studying. Springtime here came late, and so did the birds. Males established territories later into summer than usual (there were male warblers still singing and forming territories in July, a time when most if not all courtship displays should have ended and when the first chicks start to fledge). Young of several species were late to fledge as well, and we even found individual warblers re-nesting in mid-July. If these things happen in modern birds (which are dinosaurs), then it’s reasonable to postulate that this phenomena may have occurred in non-avian dinosaurs as well.
I almost like these “Making Of’s” even more than the actual shorts. That’s not to say that I don’t enjoy the films, I just love hearing you talk about the research and process of creating these works of art. Truly incredible work and I can’t wait to see the final two films! I only wish that you make more in the future!

This was easily the best episode so far, you did a great job man, an absolutely fantastic job. Dinosaur Park fm is easily my favorite formation so I was especially hyped for this episode and I am far more impressed by it than I thought I would be!
Such a beautiful representation of Late Cretaceous Canada! Always nice to see hadrosaurs prominently featured in something where they're *NOT* just cheap fodder to make the carnivores look cool!
i made a joke to myself watching the film where the female dies to the gorgotisomthing, and i thought to myself something on the lines of "ah looks like she has fallen victim to a scene of palioart"
One detail I liked was how after her encounter with the protagonist, the first thing the mother Gorgosaurus did was check that he didn't trample any of her eggs.
I actually liked the cat-like stretching of that dinosaur! I've seen horses (and there are videos of it on yputube!) Stretching in a similar position. Not as exagerated or elegant as a feline but close enough to what you portrayed :D i wouldnt be surprised if other hervibores do some stretching frpm time to time. Then again, I have no idea how dinosaurs's muscles and skeletons worked back then ^^U
A particularly awesome thing about your shorts is that they are vague enough to allow for individual interpretations. For example, the male Lambeosaurus's behaviour after losing his mate could be interpreted as grief and depression, or, if you prefer to think scientifically, it could simply be his instincts forcing him to keep trying. And this freedom you give results in these films being pleasant to a much broader audience, and that is one of the main reasons they are so strong.
I just can't even describe why I feel practically in tears this whole video. You TRULY inspire me. This is the exact kind of beautiful, respectful, artistic, thoughtful kind of depictions of dinosaurs that I am desperately starved for.

But I watch the animation first because I'm always trying to "guess" the purpose and intention of all the details I can perceive, so when the behind the scenes video gets upload, it's really satisfactory to see which details' purpose I guessed and which others had a completely different meaning.
As a palaeontologist I really really love this animated series - so many artists get discouraged from doing dinosaur stuff because pedantic people often nitpick and ruin people's enjoyment by pointing out innaccuracies but I really love that you say "yes it's innaccurate, but does it matter?" - you're here for the art, and the art is GORGEOUS Also, as a palaeontologist specialising in marine reptiles, I am VERY looking forward to the next one (I'm into Thalattosuchians tho so it's unlikely they'll make an appearance, less well known than Ichthyosaurs, Mosasaurs, etc.)

I always love watching these behind the scenes videos perhaps even more than watching then actual animations themselves! They're so informative and fun to watch all the time if I could watch them all the time that is. Cannot wait for our trip under the sea next time, I think that the mesozoic sea life is sometimes overlooked by the more well known land dwelling dinosaurs
Speaking as an artist, I can say with confidence that your backgrounds are amazing. The environments are so full of life and detail, it amazes me you can make such stellar backgrounds even though you don’t like drawing them. Drawing backgrounds/landscapes are a skill in itself, I’m an artist who’s been drawing for many years and I still struggle with drawing backgrounds. You should definitely be very proud of them, because even though backgrounds aren’t the focus point, they help breathe so much life into an environment for characters.
The difference between this film and the prior ones is actually what I love about this series: each film has something unique to it. So what if this maybe isn't as realistic... The parts I most cared for being realistic and feasible looking were, and the parts that maybe weren't just added to the atmosphere and feel of the film. And I think that's part of art... art doesn't just replicate reality, it also expresses emotions, moods, tones, the atmosphere, etc. as well.
"The work is almost always worth the effort, in the end." I think is the truest thing you can say about making any art. Its not always fun, its not even always interesting and can be downright frustrating, but sometimes pushing yourself a little can be so worth it. The use of the parasaurolophus call gave me little shivers, i've heard that audio a few times now and it never fails to make me come out in goosebumps. Theres just something eery and beautiful about hearing the call of an animal that lived so so long ago. I adore your sound design for the dinos, especially the ones you create from your own voice they are very imaginative.

Spectacular!! Yet another amazing self critique for some of the best animated paleoart out there! You may just be one guy with a youtube channel, but these videos and stories are really boundary pushing if you ask me. I can't think of any other dinosaur related media that's this beautifully stylized and strikingly unique, while also maintaining a firm grip on informed and realistic depictions of these animals. The sacrifices you make to ensure the stories aren't bogged down by scientific legitimacy are valid critiques to hold yourself accountable for, but paleoart is an opportunity to educate and enchant the uninitiated to better understand these amazing creatures, and this is by far the most enchanted I've ever felt watching something dinosaur related. These stories are mature, beautiful, thrilling, and as scientifically accurate as any paleoartist can dream to create. Well done!
Every episode is more beautiful and lovingly put together than the last and I can't help but wish for more than five of them. You've been one of my favorite animators for years, but you've really outdone yourself with this series. I'd watch a whole documentary put together in this style.

I’m loved this film, it made the little kid reading books about dinosaurs all day and getting upset when people would watch animal documentaries and paint predatory animals as the bad guy so happy. I also love this making of, I love every making of. The energy and information of them might just be my favorite thing of any new film haha
Amazing film. Tons of wonderful praise has deservedly been heaped upon this, all of which I agree with. If I was looking for one critique to share (and take this with a grain of salt because you've produced something far better in this than I ever have) It's with the sound design. I think you went a bit hard on the creaky leather sound you used when the dinosaurs move. It seems the smallest motion produces a fair amount of noise, and it makes the dinosaurs feel, perhaps, overly stiff and rigid. Like their skin isn't broken in. That's a small nit-pick and in no way is meant to diminish the accomplishment you've achieved in this beautiful film. To quote Frasier "What's the one thing better than an exquisite meal? An exquisite meal, with one tiny flaw we can pick at all night". Thank you so much for sharing these making of videos. It's so awesome to see and learn your process. It makes me want to get off my lazy ass and actually make something for myself. Thank you!
Another great video. This short was truly beautiful and the more surreal tone and love-story aspect was something really special, and learning about the creative process behind it was really interesting. The change of the more fantastical watercolour focus to the current style was also interesting to see, and I loved the surreal textures skies in each of the shots as well.
I enjoy this series so much and your dinosaur reconstructions are gorgeous! The art style is so fresh and touching, can’t wait to see the next episode!
I am absolutely falling in love with your dinosauria series after having fallen for autodale as well. I live in Alberta, and your dinosauria series (and the making of mentioning my home province) has stirred up memories of long forgotten school trips to dinosaur exhibits and elementary school projects about these magnificent creatures. Thank you for making these wonderful shorts, and for reminding me of those simpler, dinosaur toy filled days of old.

Over the past year or so, your making-of videos have been an absolutely incredible inspiration to me! There's something about hearing just how much passion and effort that you put into your projects that is utterly amazing. I'm an amateur writer, who's currently far from making anything like this, but your short films always encourage me to keep practicing and creating. As of November, I've finally started compiling a notebook of my own as a physical copy of my stories, greatly inspired by what you do. Though this comment will probably get buried, I just want to say thank you so, so much! You've shown me just how much is possible when someone puts their mind to it.

I'll be especially interested to see the water-based dinosaur film. I recall traveling to Möns Klint (i think that was the name) in Denmark which has the limestone cliffs and where lots of fossils were apparently found. They had a visitor center showing a film about local dinosaurs which contained some truly amazing water-dinosaurs. And they were beyond huge. I've seldom been that impressed at a visitor-center-film after. So I'm always thrilled to see water dinosaurs represented. I'll be waiting with bated breath.
I absolutely love the backgrounds, they were totally worth the effort! As you know, just because they're not the main focus doesn't mean they aren't subconsciously noticed by the viewer. They do a lot for the tone and overall look. I think the more detailed and colorful environments fit well with the spring/romance theme. And I love the watercolor effects, they create an almost storybook-like feel. Excellent work! I hope the next films aren't as challenging!
I think this is my favorite of all of your films, and my favorite Making Of as well. The animals are portrayed beautifully, my favorite dinosaur is in it (Parasaurolophus), and it has such a calm and outright mesmerizing atmosphere. Well done David! You deserve all the Kudos.
How am I just now realizing that each of the Dinosauria films have been sorta 4 seasons themed? Old Buck is autumn, Our Frozen Past is winter, and A More Ancient Spring is well, obviously spring. Guess the next one is my favorite season, summer! Looking forward to it as always!

These Making Of videos are truly gold. I mean... We can watch an incredible animation with an amazing and realistic story behind. And beside it we can also watch you talking about all of your research, incredible details of work that we can't imagine. What can be better than this ?
I think I posted it on the actual DInosauria series somewhere, but I absolutely adore the way your creatures look alive- even with the anatomically improbable stretches. I love the tail waggles during the calls, and the variety of modern species inspired courtship rituals- sniffing breaths, offering gifts, the like. I love the way that you bring the extinct denizens of our world alive in a way I don't think I've seen matched anywhere else. And, improbable as it is, I love this story- the lonliness, the watching of the rest of the herd pairing up, the venturing into the unknown. And I've also always loved the way you don't have true villains- all the way as far back as Sharp Teeth, you've shown that these are all just creatures trying to survive and thrive in their own way, and playing their part in the environment. There's something lovely and charming and almost magical about taking all the scientific accuracy and design choices of modern paleontology and trying to breathe life into it- of taking these creatures that we can only reconstruct from bones and imprints, and depicting them as things that are alive, that lived and loved and mated and bonded similar to creatures we see today, of imbuing goliaths that we could never see walk with familiarity, of putting them as actors in a story that we can find relatable. so thank you, is I think what i'm trying to say- thank you for fighting the uphill battle and not scrapping this story, and turning it into something that's absolutely gorgeous. It's absolutely delightful, and all of your videos seem to stick with me in a way I can't quite put my finger on.
I'm so glad you didn't scrap this film. It's actually my favorite one that you did. (Minus the finale of course) The simplicity of the animals just courting one another and finding partners is so serene. Even the predator as you've shown is doing the same thing. There's always a reason behind everything and we must remember that these are animals just doing their thing. And I love it for that reason.
It’s always so incredible to see all the work and research that goes into these films, and all the palaeontology ‘Easter eggs’ throughout (such as references to specific discoveries and specimens). You blow me away every time! And those sculptures always come out fantastically
I love it! I think people forget that Dinosaurs of all kinds were not just kill and be killed. They had families and had to find mates and everything inbetween. I loved this episode.
Certainly my favorite so far, not only cause I particularly love hadrosaurs, I also adore the mix of realistic scientifically accurate behavior and more fantastic human like behavior
The "Parasaurolophus Walker" (or as I always called them "Hammer Heads") are my all time FAVORITE dinosaurs... I always loved them as a kid, and to this day I still love them!!! THEY'RE JUST SOOOO CUTE!!!!
You rarely see aquatic dinosaurs get any sort of attention in my experience, so it's nice to know the next film will be featuring them. Plus these videos are always fun to watch and motivating. I'm honestly gonna be sad when thus series ends, I absolutely love dinosaurs and I love how beautiful and fun to watch the films are. The making of videos just make it even better because you can really see how much love is being put into the project
I freaking love these “behind the scene” videos so much, like just seeing the break-down creation process & all your stories fills me so much joy but idk why. Also whenever that Dino decided to fall over was great dose of humor. 🤣
You blend your backgrounds and your 3D models so well and I know that that is a _VERY_ difficult thing to do! All of your work is so visually stunning and appealing.

Spectacular!! Yet another amazing self critique for some of the best animated paleoart out there! You may just be one guy with a youtube channel, but these videos and stories are really boundary pushing if you ask me. I can't think of any other dinosaur related media that's this beautifully stylized and strikingly unique, while also maintaining a firm grip on informed and realistic depictions of these animals. The sacrifices you make to ensure the stories aren't bogged down by scientific legitimacy are valid critiques to hold yourself accountable for, but paleoart is an opportunity to educate and enchant the uninitiated to better understand these amazing creatures, and this is by far the most enchanted I've ever felt watching something dinosaur related.
These stories are mature, beautiful, thrilling, and as scientifically accurate as any paleoartist can dream to create. Well done!

Every episode is more beautiful and lovingly put together than the last and I can't help but wish for more than five of them. You've been one of my favorite animators for years, but you've really outdone yourself with this series. I'd watch a whole documentary put together in this style.
Ancient creatures have always fill me with wonder, they feel distant, mythological like dragons
And to see these creatures in motion it's... Awe inspiring
I live in Dorset right next to the beach, it great to see that my home is an inspiration to a series I love about ancient creatures I love.
I think the best thing about these behind the scenes episodes is the fact that we get to hear how much you love dinosaurs and art and animating, even with all the trouble it brings. Love your work!
I’m loved this film, it made the little kid reading books about dinosaurs all day and getting upset when people would watch animal documentaries and paint predatory animals as the bad guy so happy.
I also love this making of, I love every making of. The energy and information of them might just be my favorite thing of any new film haha
Amazing film. Tons of wonderful praise has deservedly been heaped upon this, all of which I agree with. If I was looking for one critique to share (and take this with a grain of salt because you've produced something far better in this than I ever have) It's with the sound design. I think you went a bit hard on the creaky leather sound you used when the dinosaurs move. It seems the smallest motion produces a fair amount of noise, and it makes the dinosaurs feel, perhaps, overly stiff and rigid. Like their skin isn't broken in.
That's a small nit-pick and in no way is meant to diminish the accomplishment you've achieved in this beautiful film. To quote Frasier "What's the one thing better than an exquisite meal? An exquisite meal, with one tiny flaw we can pick at all night".

Another great video. This short was truly beautiful and the more surreal tone and love-story aspect was something really special, and learning about the creative process behind it was really interesting. The change of the more fantastical watercolour focus to the current style was also interesting to see, and I loved the surreal textures skies in each of the shots as well.
Parasaurolophus is by far my favorite dinosaur, so it is so exciting to see them animated :)

I am absolutely falling in love with your dinosauria series after having fallen for autodale as well. I live in Alberta, and your dinosauria series (and the making of mentioning my home province) has stirred up memories of long forgotten school trips to dinosaur exhibits and elementary school projects about these magnificent creatures.

It's amazing with how well this short turned out, despite all the struggles you dealt with in making this. I also really appreciate the colors here for how vibrant they are, which is a good fit for the spring season.
Over the past year or so, your making-of videos have been an absolutely incredible inspiration to me! There's something about hearing just how much passion and effort that you put into your projects that is utterly amazing. I'm an amateur writer, who's currently far from making anything like this, but your short films always encourage me to keep practicing and creating. As of November, I've finally started compiling a notebook of my own as a physical copy of my stories, greatly inspired by what you do. Though this comment will probably get buried, I just want to say thank you so, so much! You've shown me just how much is possible when someone puts their mind to it.
Remembered the existence of this channel and the name of the channel perfectly even though it's been 11 months since I even had an idea about the channel and now I can watch the videos of my favorite short film creator again.

I'll be especially interested to see the water-based dinosaur film. I recall traveling to Möns Klint (i think that was the name) in Denmark which has the limestone cliffs and where lots of fossils were apparently found. They had a visitor center showing a film about local dinosaurs which contained some truly amazing water-dinosaurs. And they were beyond huge. I've seldom been that impressed at a visitor-center-film after. So I'm always thrilled to see water dinosaurs represented. I'll be waiting with bated breath.

I absolutely love the backgrounds, they were totally worth the effort! As you know, just because they're not the main focus doesn't mean they aren't subconsciously noticed by the viewer. They do a lot for the tone and overall look. I think the more detailed and colorful environments fit well with the spring/romance theme. And I love the watercolor effects, they create an almost storybook-like feel. Excellent work! I hope the next films aren't as challenging!
I think this is my favorite of all of your films, and my favorite Making Of as well. The animals are portrayed beautifully, my favorite dinosaur is in it (Parasaurolophus), and it has such a calm and outright mesmerizing atmosphere. Well done David! You deserve all the Kudos.
How am I just now realizing that each of the Dinosauria films have been sorta 4 seasons themed? Old Buck is autumn, Our Frozen Past is winter, and A More Ancient Spring is well, obviously spring. Guess the next one is my favorite season, summer! Looking forward to it as always!

I think I posted it on the actual DInosauria series somewhere, but I absolutely adore the way your creatures look alive- even with the anatomically improbable stretches. I love the tail waggles during the calls, and the variety of modern species inspired courtship rituals- sniffing breaths, offering gifts, the like. I love the way that you bring the extinct denizens of our world alive in a way I don't think I've seen matched anywhere else. And, improbable as it is, I love this story- the lonliness, the watching of the rest of the herd pairing up, the venturing into the unknown. And I've also always loved the way you don't have true villains- all the way as far back as Sharp Teeth, you've shown that these are all just creatures trying to survive and thrive in their own way, and playing their part in the environment.
There's something lovely and charming and almost magical about taking all the scientific accuracy and design choices of modern paleontology and trying to breathe life into it- of taking these creatures that we can only reconstruct from bones and imprints, and depicting them as things that are alive, that lived and loved and mated and bonded similar to creatures we see today, of imbuing goliaths that we could never see walk with familiarity, of putting them as actors in a story that we can find relatable.
so thank you, is I think what i'm trying to say- thank you for fighting the uphill battle and not scrapping this story, and turning it into something that's absolutely gorgeous. It's absolutely delightful, and all of your videos seem to stick with me in a way I can't quite put my finger on.
I'm so glad you didn't scrap this film. It's actually my favorite one that you did. (Minus the finale of course) The simplicity of the animals just courting one another and finding partners is so serene. Even the predator as you've shown is doing the same thing. There's always a reason behind everything and we must remember that these are animals just doing their thing. And I love it for that reason.
It’s always so incredible to see all the work and research that goes into these films, and all the palaeontology ‘Easter eggs’ throughout (such as references to specific discoveries and specimens). You blow me away every time! And those sculptures always come out fantastically
I love it! I think people forget that Dinosaurs of all kinds were not just kill and be killed. They had families and had to find mates and everything inbetween. I loved this episode.

The "Parasaurolophus Walker" (or as I always called them "Hammer Heads") are my all time FAVORITE dinosaurs... I always loved them as a kid, and to this day I still love them!!! THEY'RE JUST SOOOO CUTE!!!!
