I am the 4th in a line of 5 generations who have served in the military branches of the United States, I served in the Air Force as did my father and father-in-law, grandpa was army and my son is a Marine. Whoever came up with this retirement ceremony truly understands and is well steeped in the traditions and symbolism of the military. Very moving.
