  • A seal rescue to remember: we reached our goal of #100SealsForTime!
    In the month of May 2020, a team of committed activists from Ocean Conservation Namibia (OCN) got together and attempted to catch and disentangle 100 seals within one month from ocean rubbish and plastic pollution.
    This medium sized female Cape Fur Seal was a worthy candidate for our one hundredth seal rescue. Her head was covered in a piece of gill net - an illegal fishing method in most countries in the world, including Namibia. She was not able to eat fish anymore, the net covered her mouth and she would have starved to death without our interference.
    Naude and Antoine took about 15 minutes to slowly crawl towards the seal colony and then started a high speed chase. She slipped through Naude's fingers, but luckily Antoine had brought our seal catching net along.
    It took about 10 minutes and a lot of strategic thinking to cut through all strands of the gill net. It was a huge reward to see her swim off into the sunset, and we got to celebrate the completion of our campaign.
    Thank you all for watching and contributing to our work. We would not be able to do this without so much support for our fundraiser. WE MADE IT!
    Of course we won't rest. tomorrow we will go out again and catch the next animal in need, until our work is no longer needed. 🦭

      This is actually kind of an interesting concept. I wonder if hunters could be recruited and converted to doing this more often. This has a similar rush of emotions, from the initial tracking and locating your target to the hunt, movement, chase, and "capture". The biggest difference is that your quarry goes free at the end of it instead of ending up as dinner.
      Would be interesting if you could convince hunters to be hunter-savers.

    • @samuelrs5138
      @samuelrs5138 4 роки тому +19

      @@PodofGold In at least the US, most hunting done is actually a form of animal control of animals that have become over-populated pests. In my area it's deer. And where I live there's been a lot of fishing events that have popped up in recent years to help cull invasive species that plague our nearby rivers (asian carp). So there is some hunting/fishing out there that does the ecosystem good and I imagine there's nuisance animals like these everywhere.

      Good question. We have a few specialized Vets in our extended team, we often double check our actions with them and ask for advise. We will bring it up. At this stage, we mainly rely on the salt water to do the trick. We have seen many of our old rescues at the beach, they seem to be healing nicely, but we do not know if all of them make it.
      In the long run, we are hoping to start a proper seal rehab center.

      @jdire8765 4 роки тому +49

      In theory it sounds like a good idea but I think that it would wash off rather quickly in the ocean. You should develop one that adheres and could be cut into the specific shape of the wound. Something like a glue trap with the antibacterial medicine already integrated and designed to fall off in a day or two.

      Would most likely need specific medicines that are expensive and hard to come by, topical creams/ointments would probably wash off, some sort of injection would probably prove itself to be more benefecial, but my thought process was that these animals usually have tough immune systems and as the rescuer said, the salt water probably helps to heal too.

    Dylan's "woo hoo" when the seal reached the water says it all. That entanglement was seriously impeding this seal so thank goodness you got to her so quickly.
    I always thought the ships were Cargo ships but from Naude's comments I take it they are All commercial fishing vessels! That is outrageous.

    Imagine the immense relief of being able to breathe, move your head, see and eventually eat without all that crap wrapped around your neck and face. Man, poor seal, I'm not surprised it stayed calm while you were working on it.

    Congrats on 100 rescues. We really need to have a hard look at our stupidity of using the ocean as a dumping ground. You do a wonderful job saving these puppies. God bless.

    It breaks my heart to think that this is just a fraction of the seals worldwide that are entangled, as well as other animals. We have to take greater action like these wonderful people to make this world safe for all animals.

      I subscribed recently and have spent hours watching your videos, I think some of the more complex rescue videos could be published as an extended version. I know why many videos are published as short clips however during this global pandemic many of us have additional free time and your videos are so inspiring that I know I would enjoy watching longer versions.
