      well, to paraphrase Touchstone in Shakespeare's 'As you Like it' (and trying to sound less snobbish than he was - for context he's a court jester now living in the woods): "In respect that it is a romantic comedy, it is a decent film. But that in respect that it is an adaptation of a Jane Austen novel it is a very disappointing one indeed. In that this Anne Elliot is reminiscent of Fleabag I like it well. But in that Anne Elliot is Anne Elliot and Fleabag is Fleabag and the two characters are their own people from different eras that don't need to be combined with each other it is a very shabby and shallow understanding of the book.'
      Watch some of the earlier versions (2007, 1995, 1971), you might understand why people dislike it a bit more.
      Side note, have you seen Fleabag?
      Extra side note, if you're ever in a Shakespeare comedy mood, try 'As You Like It' from 2006 with Bryce Dallas Howard. There is absolutely no reason for it to be specifically set in Japan (though they explain at the start why so many non-Japanese people are in Japan) but then again the original play had no reason to be specifically set in France.

    What was so insulting about this movie is, not that it was such a bad adaptation, but that Hollywood thinks a quite reserved introvert woman cannot be a protagonist. If they turn all heroines into sassy girl boss manic pixie characters who will tell the stories of the shy introverts? Also, someone said that Dakota Johnson "looks like she knows what a cell phone is" and that about sums up this shitshow.

    Totally fair enjoying something with no previous context compared to not liking it with previous context. If someone changed your favourite parts of Twilight or something in an adaptation and you hated it, it wouldn't mean other people who had never known the source material/original couldn't love it for what it was. I hated this movie very much for certain aspects, but still found some parts enjoyable, and your reactions are ALWAYS enjoyable regardless! I can see how not knowing the story ahead of time made the film much more entertaining. It's a pity that this film didn't work for Jane Austen fans. Knowing how the story unfolds and feels while reading the book just takes all the tension, intrigue, and mystery out of this film.

    Also, I think it would be great to see you ladies react to either 1995 or 2007 Persuasion. Or both! I fall into the camp who thinks we still haven't gotten a quintessential Persuasion adaption, but I think the other 2 are solid enough and definitely worth a watch if you enjoyed the story!

  • @Ninjaair64

    The main reason this is such a horried adaptation, is the stigma that quiet reserved characters can't be protagonists, they have to be witty, confidant and outspoken. Which works for things like Emma or Mansfield park, but not Persuasion. I haven't even read the book and hated it regardless of the source material.

      I am sometimes known as quiet and reserved but I am also known as someone who doesn’t shut-up. There are more than 1 way to interpret quiet and reserved people just like there are more than 1 way to interpret and to imagine Persuasion. Or am I wrong and there is only 1 way to interpret and imagine Persuasion ? Please explain to me the correct way to interpret and to imagine Persuasion and Anne Elliot and Frederick Wentworth because it’s clear that I don’t know the proper way to interpret and to imagine Persuasion. I loved this film.

      Did you suggest MANSFIELD PARK has an OUTSPOKEN heroine? Are you nuts?! Have you READ that book? Fanny is just as quiet as Anne Elliot AND she's sickly like Anne De Bough!

    • @Ninjaair64
      @Ninjaair64 2 роки тому +1

      @@lovetolovefairytales I was referring to the narrative aspect of Mansfield park. Cause she is a writer so having her narrate to us would of made sense. But ya I see what you mean, she is similar to Ann. Meant more of Danton Abby.

    • @lovetolovefairytales
      @lovetolovefairytales 2 роки тому

      @@Ninjaair64 Fanny is NOT a writer. That was an idiotic addition to the 1999 movie. I'm not opposed to the idea of Fanny Price writing for pleasure, but the adaptation could have at least had her write something suited to her character type. She likes books like Cowper's poems or The Idler, and she seems to enjoy sermons and morality tales; so if they'd shown her writing in those styles that could have worked. But they decided to just make her Jane Austen instead. Fanny would never write feminist slanted history. They ruined her before they ruined Anne.

    • @lovetolovefairytales
      @lovetolovefairytales 2 роки тому +3

      @@logann-mackenziefroste563 there's a difference between the way a quiet person generally speaks/presents herself when on a roll (aka when she can't shut up) and the snarky mean spirited way Anne Elliot is shown in this movie.
      Personally I'm a quiet person (a Fanny Price or Anne Elliot type) who occasionally has outbursts that rival Marianne Dashwood at her most offended.
      BUT that is moot because you also need to consider the historical context. If a woman behaved as Anne does in this 2022 film in the Regency era, she'd get a reputation that would RUIN her. In the book, it's made clear that all the neighbors and people who know Anne deeply respect her and see her as a model woman of the time. She's looked up to. Ergo she did not go around acting like the long lost love child between Ella Enchanted and Bridget Jones.

    I kinda wish they just hadn’t claimed it was Persuasion! Its like if She’s the Man (which is a great movie) claimed it was a totally faithful adaptation of Shakespeare‘s Twelfth Night. They should’ve put this in a modern setting like they clearly wanted to and call it Schmooless or whatever.
    Also Dakota Johnson was such a BAD choice! Her accent sucks. She was reportedly rude and refused to let the hair department do their job.. I just.. _why???_

    Persuasion is my favourite Jane Austen novel so I was really looking forward to watching this adaptation, however before I got a chance to watch it I starting reading/hearing from other Jane Austen fans about just how terrible it was so I gave it a wide birth. One day whilst I was just chilling, trying to find something new to watch I remembered it and thought, heck I’ll give it a go. I think if I’d have watched it initially with my high expectations I probably would have hated it, but because I was aware of its not being a faithful adaptation and that it was more of a modern take, I actually didn’t mind it. I watched it and enjoyed it for what it was, and I’d probably watch it again tbh.
    Anyway, I really enjoyed your reaction, you girls made me laugh a number of times and it truly felt like I was watching it with my own friends! 😊

    First of all, the editing is A1. 👌🏾 I'm definitely not an Austen purist. I watched the other 2 adaptations to prep for this one, so I was familiar with the story. I didn't fall in love with the other movies like I did with the P&P adaptations, but I could tell I really like the story, and this is definitely a trash adaptation, but y'all know that already lol. My other issue is I really didn't enjoy it as a stand-alone movie either. I didn't start reading the book til after watching this movie, but just in general, I didn't like most of their attempts at modernizing the story. Some of the language was way too modern and jarring for a period piece. I like 4th wall breaks, but I hate the way they did it. Entirely too much telling, not showing. Some of the dialogue was way too cringey. A lot of the comedy didn't land with me. I did enjoy Mary for the most part tho lol. And Mr. Elliot was so charming! Overall, I was just underwhelmed. But it's still cool that y'all enjoyed it!

    I hate this movie and it's not about being a book purist but the fact that the main character has an entirely different personality, demeanor, and moral compass in the movie. That was not the Anne Elliott of the book. And that means that the writer missed the point of the book ENTIRELY because the book is about the character development that allows her to fight for the man she loves. It's ok if you never read the book and enjoyed the movie, just know two things: the book is unrecognizable in this movie and the writer of this movie is an 80 year old man that thinks young women actually speak like millennial cliches. There are legit issues with this movie, is not just Jane Austen fans complaining without reason, the writer I am sure did not read the fucking book.

      Most Austen purists LOVE the 2005 Pride and Prejudice... There was a brief fandom war because people were arguing over if it was better than the Colin Firth version and some of us didn't care for Keira as Elizabeth Bennet. But you'd be hard pressed to find a real Austen fan who wouldn't at least admit 2005 was gorgeous and at least kept the spirit of the novel. I think if Joe Wright hadn't been a wanker about empire waists and a few other details here and there 2005 wouldn't have been controversial at all.

      Don't get me wrong, in the Austen Fandom at large I sometimes get a little miffed because your average Austen fan expects your favorite book to be Pride and Prejudice or Sense and Sensibility (Emma, if you're daring), but they get real narrow eyed if you name Mansfield Park as your favorite. But I'd rather defend my right to love Fanny Price better than Lizzy Bennet a thousand times over than lose brain cells trying to explain to people who clearly can't see past Hollywood's agenda why the Anne Elliot of this Persuasion is insulting to Austen's work.

      I'm a Jane Austen fan and I love 2005 Pride and Prejudice and adore Emma 2020.Because both those movies did not change the story or spirit of the characters. Persuasion 2022 is absolute trash because they completely changed Anne Elliott an strong intelligent woman who was suffering from heart break and quite yearning all this years into a bumbling idiot who doesn't even seem upset that she lost the love of her life. This has been done so beautifully in 1995 and 2007 adaptation. To take the beautiful lines of Austen and turn it into a 3rd rate comedy is absolutely unforgivable.
